Chapter 1 - Comets And Nightmares
Crimson was running through the fire. Long shadows loomed over her as she yelled for her parents. Rossetta, still only 14 was looking terrified as she looked around her. All the hard work from the scientists was being burned. How could the experiment have gone so wrong? All it was supposed to do was create a spark. Not a fire! Suddenly the First Intelligence was there and commanding soldiers to put out the fire. But it was too late. Crimson didn't even have to see to know. Her parents were dead. Rossetta and her were the only ones left of the Mira line. Soon they would be dead too. Then the Mira line would be gone. Forever. She stared at her parents' body with a sickening feeling. There was no way that she could go on living like this. She was only 18. She couldn't do that. She barely earned anything, mostly because the First Intelligence said she was too young. It is true, he had said with a cold smile, You have talent. You could lead, rule, even. After all, you have no parents, and the Count has no children. Crimson's heart wretched. She couldn't bear to even think about it. She looked up at Rossetta for comfort, hoping for a smile, one that was familiar. All of a sudden, Rossetta collapsed. Crimson gasped and hurried to her side, but Rossetta's skin was cold. 'No! Wake up, Rosie! Wake up!' Out of nowhere, Cypher Mira's body- her mother's body suddenly rose. Something was wrong. Her skin was ghastly white. Too pale. Her eyes were slightly red. She looked Crimson right in the eye and murmured, "Could have saved us. Should have saved us." and then fell back to the floor. Crimson started to back out of the burning lab room-
"Crimson! Crimson! Wake up! Stop shaking! You're kicking me!" Crimson woke with a start.
"Wha-wha-what? What happened? Fire!?" Rossetta stared back at Crimson in shock. She shook her head,
"N-no. Of course not! You were shaking. And sweating. So I tried to get you to wake up, but then you started kicking me. And then it was weird. You were like trying to walk, but you were laying down. You must've had a bad dream." Rossetta was patting Crimson on the shoulder, but when she said 'fire', it must have triggered memories of their parent's deaths.
Crimson turned bright red. She was the older sibling. She was not supposed to have nightmares anymore. She should be the one comforting other people, not Rossetta.
"Look, whatever just happened, never happened. Ok?" She looked Rossetta in the eye. Rossetta nodded slightly, but she also looked frightened - of her? No. That wasn't possible. Rossetta never was scared of her. They were the best sisters. Sisters forever. As far as they were concerned, there were three types of sisters, they had read enough stories to know. The types that hated each other forever, the type that hated each other every 5 seconds, but then made of quickly, and the type that never fought, and practically always knew what each other were thinking. Fortunately, the Mira sisters were in the latter group.
Today was the day after Crimson's birthday. Usually, on this day they would take an off day and go have fun with each other, but now, they were having the best time ever. Although, Crimson wasn't sure she could call it all fun. It was a matter of life or death... in the long run. But still, had they stayed, they would've spent the rest of their days working for the Count, probably even dying on Star 5C, but now... they had all the time in the world to go wherever they wanted. No one could control them anymore, not even the Count. She smiled at Rossetta,
"C'mon! This'll be fun. I've had Lostar scanning for other forms of life while we slept, this might be our first chance to meet people outside of Star 5C!" Rossetta's worried faced disappeared as she grinned. They ran over to the radar hologram and watched as the blinking line was starting to move. Rossetta drew her breath while Crimson gave one of her triumphant grins. "See! It's found something. It's going to route us towards there and we can just do whatever we want." But Rossetta's face had gone called. Crimson frowned as they walked to their bags together, "What?" Rossetta shook the frown off her face and smiled again.
"It's nothing. I just thought I saw a Crash Stone." Crimson stared in disbelief. A Crash Stone sighting hadn't happened in over a decade! Her sister couldn't be getting cold feet - could she? No, it was probably nothing, just like Rossetta said. She nodded confidently and continued to walk on. They spent the rest of the evening just like all the other ones on Star 5C. So far, being a Lostone was boring.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, the whole ship rocked back and forth. Crimson, sitting on a table jumped up and stumbled. Even worse, Rossetta, asleep on their made-up bed, rolled across the ship room's floor. Quickly both shook themselves from their half-asleep state and started to run for each other. Crimson started to call for Rossetta, she had heard a crash and thump and feared for the worse. Running through the large ship's corridors they suddenly ran into each other. The alarm was beeping like crazy now, and they were going far too fast. Rossetta turned to look at the other side of Crimson and screamed. The window behind her big sister was shattered and chunks of rock were flying through, Crimson, unfortunately, caught one right in the leg and stumbled, before falling on the ground. Rossetta quickly grabbed her and ran, Crimson limping behind. "Go! I'll close the backup's shield. I need to see what's going on." But Rossetta wasn't fooled. She ran to her sister and helped her up, before running to the Control Room. Everything was a mess. More than half of the alerts were going off, and the ones that weren't? Well, there weren't many of those. She panicked and quickly hit one of the buttons, causing a silvery metallic voice to float through the air.
"Please hold on. Ship stabilizers are being activated. In the meantime, find something to hold onto for the crash." Rossetta stared at her sister, terrified. Her sister looked back helplessly, before saying -
"You pressed the self crash on nearest planet button. It was for emergencies - if someone was chasing us, or, if we were going to crash anyways, which I dare say is the case right now." Rossetta panicked and grabbed onto her sister.
"What!? Oh god... We're going to crash?!!?!?" Crimson looked awkwardly at her sister. Rossetta hardly ever got into a highly distressed state. She cleared her throat and Rossetta stopped squealing.
"That's the whole point. It makes us crash safer. And it lets us know where we're gonna crash. And it let's us know when. It pretty much is like a really safe way to crash. Trust, that was the one part of the whole ship I was completely sure worked. I'm a Crasher after all. I have experience." Rossetta looked at Crimson sheepishly.
"Well I have experience too. And trust me, that was not a good one." Crimson laughed and grabbed Rossetta with one hand, the railing with another. The computer beeped and started talking in it's smooth voice again,
"Please prepare for impact. Crash starting in 3 2 1..." Rossetta looked at Crimson with a fearful nod.
"I trust you. And I don't really trust this ship but I trust you so we're gonna be fine right?" Crimson nodded back confidently, but her eyes were also full of fear.
"I mean, I never imagined this would happen... but there's a first time for everything. We're gonna be fi- AHHHHHHH" They were plummeting down at high speed now, and the girls were being thrown around inside the Control room. Quickly, Crimson reached for Rossetta, grabbed her sleeve, and pulled her towards the small railing that Crimson was holding onto. The computer spoke again,
"Crashing in three, two on-" But it never finished it's sentence, although the message was quite clear, obviously from the boom and shakes as half of the walls started to collapse in. Rossetta started to scream, but when she looked over at Crimson, she was perfectly calm. Rossetta stopped and looked at her older sister. What was wrong with her?! Didn't she know they were about to die?! Only when she stopped screaming did Crimson look at her,
Uknown Planet 9078 Octenfis 13
"I told you we'd be fine. The whole 'walls compressing thing' is for our protection. Then there's less space to roll across the floor." She grinned again. The whole ship was still. Rossetta sighed a breath of relief, she had been worried, obviously. How was she supposed to know that the ship was supposed to contract the walls in on itself? She shuddered. Well, the important thing was that they were alive. Crimson noticed something was wrong. Rossetta was shivering severely. She gasped as she looked up, the ceiling had broken in on some places. Must've been the work of the Crash Stone. Rossetta noticed Crimson staring at the sky and looked up too. Suddenly, lights were in the sky. As if in a trance, they walked out of the spaceship together, still staring at the moving green-blue lights hanging in the sky. It looked as if someone had decided to put shimmering silk in the sky. Out of nowhere, a little girl cleared her throat behind them. Both Nordervists gasped as they whirled around. The girl was short. Different. A new species thought Crimson.
"Hi. I'm Brigitta, welcome to the City Of The Northern Lights."
