Chapter 6: Lilybud
"And this is where you'll be staying." Hop Pop said, opening the door to the basement.
Anne looked down and hummed, holding a sleeping bag. There was moss, a few glowing mushrooms as lights, and it was empty. She sighed...this wasn't gonna be easy. But when she looked at The Plantars, they were at least giving her a place to stay.
Hop Pop chuckled nervously. "Sorry if it's not so homey, Anne. We don't get many surprise visitors."
Anne just smiled. "No, no! It's fine! Thank you...I-I'm kinda scared to be honest." She said as she set her sleeping bag across the floor, and the satchel with the music box and all her things in the backpack she had on when opening the box.
Hop Pop's eyes softened before he hopped over. "Scared?"
"I...I'm worried if I'll ever get home...but also find my friends. My BEST friends, Sasha and Marcy. They look a lot like me...and I pray to god they're ok." She said, feeling a few tears forming in her eyes.
Hop Pop patted her back. "We owe you, Anne. We can help you find your friends and get back home."
Anne smiled and wiped her tears before she hugged Hop Pop. "Thanks, Hop Pop."
Hop Pop chuckled. "Get some rest, Anne. Breakfast is early in the morning."
"...it's not bugs, is it?"
"It's a frog delicacy! How'd you know?"
Anne tried not to vomit so she wouldn't seem rude. "J-Just guessing."
The next morning, Anne woke up to someone hopping up and down on her chest. Her eyes snapped open and she reached for her sword, but then noticed it was just Sprig. She sighed in relief. "Sprig, what are you doing?! I was getting some sleep!"
"Well, I wanna wake my new roomie for breakfast!" Sprig said, having a cute smile on his face.
Anne looked into the frog's eyes for a moment...before sighing. "I can't stay mad at that face."
You'll say otherwise soon, Anne. The girl eventually got up, leaving her satchel and sword on her sleeping bag, walking upstairs. Hop Pop had served up three bowls of some kind. Anne tilted her head as she sat down...and then the color drained from her face.
Inside the bowl was mysterious green goo or water, with bugs of all kinds inside. Centipedes, crickets, and flies. Anne covered her mouth, unable to remain 'polite' before vomiting inside her own mouth.
"Whoa, rude much?" Polly asked.
Anne made a few indescribable noises before holding up a finger. "S-Sorry...I...think I lost my appetite."
Hop Pop sighed. "Well, this isn't one of my BEST dishes-"
"Swamp Soufle is your best-" Polly said before she was shushed by her grandfather.
"In the meantime, I guess I'll try and find ya something you can eat."
Anne hummed. "...you got a carrot or vegetables or fruit? Something?"
Hop Pop's eyes went sparkly before he squealed. "MY TIME HAS COME!" He screamed before zooming over to the farm outside.
Anne blinked. "...okay then." She said before sighing.
Sprig went over. "Hey, are you alright?"
"Yeah. Just sucks that I have to stay here for MONTHS. It was my birthday yesterday, my parents must be worried sick, and my friends are missing. And I'm also wearing a dead person's suit of armor...so, I'm a little stressed and homesick." She said, putting her hands on her chin.
Sprig hummed before he got an idea. "Welllll! While you're here, we could go...to the lake! That always cheers me up!"
"Aren't you grounded-" Polly said before she was shushed AGAIN by her brother.
Anne smiled a little. "Me and my friends DID always go to the beach. I like the way you think, frog child!"
Sprig then went up closer. "So, does this make us friends?!"
Anne couldn't help it. This frog was too cute. She then smiled. "Heck yeah!"
Sprig smiled wide before he began hopping. "WOO! I'M FRIENDS WITH A HUMAN!" He hopped.
'Dang, Heart really did have an impact on them.' Anne thought before suddenly? A bunch of vegetables were poured down over her and she practically drowned.
Hop Pop threw the bucket aside. "That'll be 50 coppers."
"Help..." Anne said, her voice muffled.
Later that day, Anne and Sprig snuck out over to the lake. With Sprig not telling Anne that he was grounded by his grandfather, but Anne already knew...since Hop Pop had said it out loud.
When they went over, Anne stabbed her sword into the dirt and then launched herself into the water, laughing. "Oh, the water's actually really nice!"
Sprig quickly joined her, splashing in after her and laughing.
For the rest of the time, they just played around in the water. Hitting each other with objects nearby, splashing each other, trying to tame a water beetle, or even just floating around.
Anne sighed. "This...this is nice. Thanks for this, Sprig."
Sprig laughed. "I told you! It's relaxing!"
"Wish I brought my phone." Anne hummed.
Sprig blinked. "What is a phone...?"
Anne's eyes went wide and she shot up, turning to Sprig slowly. "You...don't know what a phone is...?"
"No...?" Sprig said before his eyes went wide and he froze up.
"A phone's like one of my most prized possessions! Pretty much everyone in the human world has one! It takes pictures, lets you call people, and can even give you a-"
"S-SNAKE!!!" Sprig screamed.
Anne tilted her head. "Snake? I mean...you can order a snake." She then heard a slither and slowly turned around...only to scream.
Some kind of giant sea serpent roared, showing their large fangs before lunging at Anne. Sprig quickly pushed Anne out of the way, the water getting in the snake's eyes.
The snake hissed before grabbing Sprig with its tail, lifting it towards its jaws.
Sprig screamed, thrashing around as he tried to escape, even kicking one of the snake's teeth out. The snake roared, letting go of Sprig and causing him to fall into...Anne's arms.
Anne tried her best to wade through the water and onto the dirt, but she growled before throwing Sprig onto shore.
"ANNE!" Sprig cried before his eyes widened even further. "WATCH OUT!"
Anne whipped around, only for her neck to be grabbed by the snake's tail and she was lifted in the air, about to be eaten before a giant glob of dirt was launched into the snake's eye.
The snake roared before turning to Sprig, seeing that he was the one who lunged the glob of dirt at him. He began slithering around the water before making it to shore. He then suddenly SWALLOWED Sprig.
"S-SPRIG!!!!!" Anne shrieked, her eyes wide with pure HORROR...before something started to flow through her veins.
Multiple emotions flooded through her brain before they all connected to one. RAGE.
Anne's eyes and hair suddenly turned pure BLUE and she screamed at the top of her lungs in anger, breaking free of the snake's grip and hovering in the air.
The snake's eyes widened in horror before it was punched in the face, and then grabbed by the neck and smashed against the water by Anne.
Anne screamed before continuing to practically strangle the snake with her newfound strength. She then flew high into the air and punched the snake one last time...and that's when Sprig came flying out.
"I AM TRAUMATIZED- AHHHHH!" Sprig cried as he fell through the air.
Anne gasped and threw the snake, flying after Sprig and catching him, and then slowly floating down to shore and looking down at him. "Y-You ok, dude?" She asked, her voice echoing and hair flowing.
Sprig's jaw dropped. "A...Anne...your hair is-"
Then, the snake began to slither away, screeching in terror. Anne growled and gently set Sprig down before she grabbed her sword, and ZOOMED over to the snake.
She then appeared in front of its face and slashed it across the eye. The snake roared before sinking, but it could breathe underwater. It just had to act dead if it wanted to survive.
Anne breathed heavily before gripping her sword and floating back over to Sprig. She then sighed, trying to calm down as her hair and eyes went back to normal.
Sprig's jaw dropped to the ground before he rubbed his eyes. "T...That was something Heart did!!! YOU HAVE HER POWERS!!!!"
Anne then realized what she had just done. She had SUPERPOWERS.
So? She fainted.
