Chapter 3: Wartwood's Hero
The Plantars were a rather famous...okay, not really famous. I just wanna make them sound cool, y'know? They've been through some things.
Their family was more farmers...or at least, they currently were. They were all kinds of things during the old days. Warriors, scientists, and inventors. This current generation consisted of Hopediah Planter and his two grandchildren, Sprig and Polly.
Did I mention they were frogs?
Hop Pop hopped (get it?) off the cart and then turned to his grandson and granddaughter. "Alright, kids. I'm gonna get some things from the store. Watch over the cart!"
Sprig eagerly leapt on the top of the cart. "You got it, Hop Pop! I'LL DEFEND THIS CART WITH MY LIFE!!!"
Hop Pop chuckled and patted Sprig's head. "You'd surely let it die before you, Sprig. That's why I was talking to Polly."
Polly, despite being a tadpole, smirked smugly at Sprig.
Sprig's eyes widened. "WHAT?! B-But Polly's a baby!"
Polly just sat back in her water bucket, still smirking at the new power she was given.
"She's got more responsibility in her eyebrow than you do in your entire body!" Hop Pop said, crossing his arms.
Sprig scoffed. "Ridiculous! What makes you think that?"
Hop Pop narrowed his eyes. "...gee. Let me think. The time you spilled a Grubhog's acid on dinner?"
"That was-"
"The time you crashed into my room with a cow-worm?"
"But-"
"And when you attracted a bunch of fireflies by leaving the lights on!" Hop Pop finished.
Sprig sighed. "Okay. So, yesterday was a bad day..."
Hop Pop nodded before turning to Polly. "Watch over the cart AND your brother."
"You got it!" Polly said, saluting with her arm...since she didn't really have a hand.
Hop Pop then headed into the store, greeting the employees inside. Sprig sighed, sulking into the cart as he gave a small glare to his little sister, who just cackled to herself.
But that's when the town crazy person (we're thinking of a better title) came running in, breathing heavily. "M...MANTIS! MANTISSS!!!"
The villagers quickly began to freak out, hiding behind their houses or houses that didn't belong to them. Polly went deeper into her bucket, while Sprig just eagerly stared at the forest Wally had come from.
But instead...was a mantis raptorial leg. Not the mantis itself.
Mayor Toadstool sighed in relief. "Calm down, everyone! It's just a leg! Wally's nuts again!"
The villagers gave One Eyed Wally a glare before walking out, continuing their normal lives...until three Red Mantis' came out, roaring and hissing.
All of Wartwood began to scream, running off in terror as the Mantis' began to roam and walk around, slicing and roaring, looking for their next meal.
Sprig quickly grabbed his slingshot, hopping out of the cart and grabbing a nearby rock and launching it at one of the mantis'.
The mantis rubbed the back of its head before turning and growling.
Sprig blinked. "Thinking out loud...maybe that was a bad idea."
"MANTIS FORMATION!" Polly screeched.
Sprig turned as the mantis began to walk towards him. "WHAT WAS IT?!?!"
"RUN LIKE A COWARD!!!" Polly shrieked.
Sprig gave a thumbs up before running around and leading the mantis into the forest, screaming at the top of his lungs.
The mantis turned to its fellow insects and gestured to the forest, as if telling them they should focus all of their attention on the pink frog.
The two mantis' looked at each other before shrugging and nodding, all three of them chasing after Sprig and leaving Wartwood.
Sprig kept running and running through the forest, using his tongue to swing around the trees like some kind of spider based superhero. But, no matter what he did, he couldn't get away.
He started to run, leap, and swing away faster. But then? He met a dead end in a cave. He screamed, whipping around to the Mantis'.
The mantis that he shot with a rock smirked and began crawling forward...until its face washed with pure horror.
The other mantis' quickly backed up, not caring about their fellow mantis for a second.
Then, right in front of Sprig, a Mantis leg fell from the sky.
Sprig blinked. "...What the frog?"
Then? A girl in golden and blue armor hopped down. She had a knight's helmet, covering her face and a glowing blue sword.
Sprig recognized her right away and gasped. "OH MY FROG, THIS IS HAPPENING."
The knight turned to Sprig, silent before turning to the mantis and lightly lifting her sword towards them.
The other two Mantis turned and ran away, but the first charged, despite being terrifed, swinging one of its legs towards the knight.
The knight swung her sword, slicing off the leg and watching the green like liquid splatter from it and onto her sword.
The mantis screeched, but shot out another leg, only for it to be sliced off as well.
The knight then hopped into the air, thrusting her sword into the mantis' stomach. The mantis screeched and screeched before falling onto the ground, dying seconds later.
Sprig's jaw dropped...before he began squealing. "HEART!!! IT'S REALLY YOU!!! I...I THOUGHT YOU DIED!!!"
The knight lifted her head and spoke...in a voice that definitely didn't belong to an older woman. "Huh? Who's Heart?" She then gasped. "Wait! Another person! Hang on, I can hardly see with all the moss on the inside of this thing." She said before taking off her helmet...to reveal a light brown skinned woman, with chocolate colored hair.
Sprig's eyes widened for a moment. "Whoa..."
The girl, Anne (remember her?) quickly screamed and hopped back, dropping her sword. "OH MY GOD, YOU'RE A TALKING FROG!!!"
Sprig shook his head, snapping out of his trance. "Hey! That's a little rude."
Anne then regained her composure. "Oh. Sorry. I thought you were gonna eat me."
"Ew! No! We don't eat living things...around daytime." Sprig said before looking at her. "Besides! You just saved my life! You're...you're like her! A hero! A rather ugly looking hero!"
Anne narrowed her eyes. "Okay...the ugly part hurt, but the hero bit fixed it!" She then walked over. "You ok?"
Sprig nodded. "Yeah! Who are you? You're definitely not Heart."
"Oh! I'm Anne! Anne Boonchuy!"
"Sprig Plantar!" He said, lifting out his hand for a handshake.
Anne shook it, but her golden and blue gauntlet was covered in slime afterwards. She wiped it off with a small chuckle before reaching into her satchel and looking at the music box. "Guess that explains the frog on it..."
Sprig tilted his head. "Hey, what is that?"
"Huh? Oh. Nothing." Anne said as she put the box back in her satchel. "So...you have clothes...and know how to speak English...do you have a town or something? I've been eating bugs for the past hour or so."
Sprig nodded. "Yeah! But put on the helmet!"
Anne blinked before shrugging and putting on the helmet. "Disguise?" She said as she and Sprig began walking out of the forest.
Sprig chuckled. "Not exactly. I want them to feel the same disappointment I did!"
"Okay, you are just being rude today and we've just met." Anne said.
They kept walking before Hop Pop and Polly leapt over, with Hop Pop hugging his grandson. "Oh, thank frog!"
Sprig laughed. "See? I told you I was responsible! I saved the town!"
"And nearly got yourself killed, boy!" Hop Pop said. "I don't know if I should be proud or smack ya! But right now I'm just in relief-" His eyes then widened when he saw who followed shortly after.
Anne walked out, her armor lightly clanking as she stepped into the light, her golden shine returning.
Every frog in Wartwood stared, wide eyed before they began cheering.
"HEART HAS RETURNED!!!"
"SHE HAS RETURNED FROM THE DEAD!!!"
"I AM SO CONFUSED!!! EVERYONE BE HAPPY!!!"
Anne looked at everyone celebrating and running over to her. "Wha- I- WHO'S HEART?!?"
Sprig then gestured to a statue in the middle of town...the statue was of a knight, wielding a sword and shield. The statue was rather old and made of stone, but it looked like it had been cleaned every single day.
Anne's eyes widened and she looked at the statue and then her armor. "...OHHHH, I GET IT."
