Chapter 28: Cloaker
"Where have you been?" Mrs. Boonchuy asked, wiping away her daughter's tears and her own. "W-We thought you ran away...! D-Did you...? Is it something we did? S-Something I did?"
Anne sniffled and hugged her mother a bit tighter, shaking her head. "N...No...I didn't wanna leave..."
"Then...where were you?" Mr. Boonchuy asked, taking out twigs and leaves from Anne's hair.
Anne wiped her eyes, remembering that one moment where Marcy shoved her out of the way. She closed her tearful eyes. Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy quickly got the impression that she didn't wanna talk about it right now.
While they did want to know, they were just happy their daughter was safe and back in their arms.
That's when Anne's cat, Domino, walked over and onto Anne's lap. Anne sniffled and ran her fingers through the cat's fur. "H-Hey, my sweet baby...I-I missed you..."
Mrs. Boonchuy smiled a bit. "He missed you too, Anne...we b-both did..."
Anne nodded, her armor still feeling incredibly heavy. "I...okay, I...there's some people I w-want you to meet. They'll explain everything...b-because I...I can't...can't..." She hugged herself, shivering. "T-They watched over m-me while I was g-gone..."
Mrs. and Mr. Boonchuy seemed a bit suspicious, but they shrugged it off. Mr. Boonchuy then looked at his daughter. "Then, where are they?"
Anne then stood up and walked to the door. She opened it and then made some kind of noise. A signal.
And that's when The Plantars hopped out. Hop Pop looked at the Boonchuys and laughed nervously, waving. "Heyyyy, fellow adult! How do you-"
And that's when Mr. Boonchuy fainted. Mrs. Boonchuy, on the other hand, grabbed a rake. "Tāy mnus̄ʹy̒ t̀āng dāw tāy!"
"MOM, PUT DOWN THE RAKE, PUT DOWN THE RAKE-"
One long explanation fit for a fanfiction based off a popular TV show on Disney Channel later...
"And after we charged the Gems? Sasha suddenly came right in and took the box, saying The Night was alive! And that's when Andrias turned on us!" Sprig exclaimed.
Mr. Boonchuy's eyes were wide, while Mrs. Boonchuy was rubbing her head, as if she was trying to process all of this. Mr. Boonchuy then spoke up. "Wait, wait...so...Anne had crazy blue powers after being...transported to a world called Amphibiland-"
"Amphibia." Hop Pop corrected before chuckling. "Sorry."
Mr. Boonchuy nodded. "And she took the armor of a dead person and basically became a superhero?"
Anne blinked. "Huh...when ya put it like that, it sounds familiar."
Mrs. Boonchuy wanted to doubt all of this and demand a real explanation...but on the other hand, she was talking to walking, anthropomorphic frogs. She couldn't exactly...NOT believe them.
"Okay...then what happened?" Mrs. Boonchuy asked.
Anne's eyes widened a bit and she held Domino closer, while Sprig and Polly looked to the side. Hop Pop sighed. "W-Well...honestly, I don't know how to say this lightly..."
Mr. Boonchuy grew a little nervous.
"...Sasha started fighting Andrias, and as we were trying to use the Calamity Box to make a portal...The Night tried to attack Anne and..." Hop Pop took a deep breath. "Marcy pushed her out of the way...and...she's gone..."
Mrs. Boonchuy's eyes widened in pure HORROR, and Mr. Boonchuy was left frozen with shock.
Anne felt tears begin to stream down again and she began to cry again, remembering that vision they had. Why didn't she believe Sasha? She could've saved Marcy. She could've done...something. Something to stop Marcy from being pulled into the darkness. Something to stop her from dying.
Her eyes flickered blue before she finally began to cry. She was quickly embraced by both Mr. Boonchuy and Sprig. Anne only cried harder, hugging them both.
Mrs. Boonchuy, Polly, and Hop Pop all joined the hug later. Now Mr. and Mrs. Boonchuy KNEW they weren't lying.
The next day...
"You're sure you're okay with us staying?" Hop Pop asked, trying the best he could to help Mrs. Boonchuy around the kitchen, who herself was trying to make her daughter something to eat. Stress eating or comfort food wasn't exactly the greatest choice, but it was helpful as long as it wasn't overdone.
"You took in and looked after my daughter out of pure kindness." Mrs. Boonchuy said. "This is the least we could do."
Hop Pop smiled at that.
Mrs. Boonchuy then looked at him. "...Marcy's really gone...isn't she? What about Sasha?"
"We have no idea." Hop Pop sighed. "But...unless Marcy survived, I...I'm sorry."
Mrs. Boonchuy wiped tears from her own eyes. She always remembered Marcy and her family coming over all the time, especially when Anne was in Kindergarten. The silly things she'd do, and Anne's crush on her was obvious.
It was hard for her to accept the smart little girl with that adorable smile...died. Not just died, but was KILLED. What heartless monster would want to murder a child for no reason?
"Are you okay...?" Hop Pop asked. He knew all too well what it was like to lose a family member. He lost his child after all thanks to those Herons.
Mrs. Boonchuy took a deep breath and nodded. "Yes. Yes, I am." She then smiled a bit, but it was pained. "Y-You know...Marcy always helped Anne with her homework or puzzles or generally anything. She was such a sweet girl...and Sasha? She was a sweetheart. Before her parents divorced, she always made sure Anne and Marcy stayed out of trouble. I...I..." She took another deep breath. "They were family too...I pray Sasha is okay at least."
Hop Pop turned to see his grand kids with Mr. Boonchuy, with all of them comforting Anne. They were distracting themselves with how to fix Frobo, with Mr. Boonchuy saying they should have been able to find a mechanic.
He then turned back to Mrs. Boonchuy. "If Sasha is strong enough to become Queen of Toads, then I'm sure she's okay."
Mrs. Boonchuy sighed. "I hope you're right...and I'm sorry that you all have to be on lockdown. Humans aren't as...nice as you frogs were to Anne."
Hop Pop gulped. "Noted."
Cloaker transported in an alleyway. He looked around, seeing he was now on Earth. It reminded him greatly of the golden days of Amphibia, when it was a technological empire. But Earth was far less advanced.
He then went into his systems, recalling the energy signature of Heart AKA Anne Boonchuy. He then went invisible before climbing a building and then jumping...and then breaking a car.
"Oh, frog." Cloaker said before sneaking away.
He then kept following the signature before he came across the neighborhood. The signature was stronger than ever. Cloaker looked around before seeing the Boonchuy House. He smiled before crawling over to the porch. "Prepare to meet your doom, Anne Boonchuy! MUAHAHAHHAAHAH- AGH!" He exclaimed, being hit by the door opening.
It was Anne, who was munching on a cookie made by her mom. She was no longer in her armor. She was in a pink and white t-shirt with a campfire on it. She had a yellow hoodie wrapped around her waist, and blue shorts. Along with decent looking shoes that were white and purple. She then...smiled a bit. "Oh, I need a breeze, heh."
Cloaker growled silently before he closed the door.
"Huh?" Anne said before blinking. "I guess I closed the door." She said with a shrug before munching on the cookie again. "Mmmm, I love chocolate chip. Cookies are the solution to all the world's problems! Even depression."
'Well, that's a lie. And I can't technically feel depression.' Cloaker thought before going out of cloak mode and taking out his claws as he stood behind Anne.
Anne sighed. "Finally, nothing trying to kill me." She then blinked. "Did I just jinx myself- AGH!"
Cloaker grabbed her neck, lifting her in the air, his orange eyes glowing as he looked at her. "Hello, Anne Boonchuy. The King sends his regards!" He then went invisible, throwing Anne onto the front yard.
Anne cried out as she landed on the driveway. She quickly got back up, looking around. She instinctively reached for her sword before remembering? Andrias destroyed it. "CURSES!"
Cloaker reappeared and suddenly sliced her in the back, sending her to her knees. He hummed. "I remember The King talking so highly of you...guess he was wrong." He then turned his arm into a laser canon. "Say your prayers!"
Anne breathed heavily, turning around as she stared at the glowing orange canon. She just got back home, and now she was about to-
That's when suddenly? A rake was thrown at Cloaker. It didn't work, but Cloaker turned around. Only to be kicked in the face by Sprig. "AGH!"
Sprig then front flipped over Cloaker and used his tongue to swing right onto his back, where he punched him in the eye.
"AGHHH!! MY OPTIC!!! MY BEAUTIFUL ORANGE OPTIC!!!" Cloaker exclaimed before going invisible. He then grabbed Sprig and threw him off.
Sprig cried out, but landed on his feet before rushing to Anne. "ANNE! ARE YOU OKAY!?"
"I-I think-" Anne then cried out, being grabbed by Cloaker again.
Sprig quickly grabbed his slingshot, launching a glob of dirt at the robot.
The dirt hit Cloaker in the face, causing his cloaking to flicker. "Huh?!"
Sprig then ninja kicked Cloaker in the same broken eye before swinging using his tongue again, saving Anne a second time.
Cloaker quickly started firing orange lasers from his functioning eye, with Sprig and Anne just barely dodging each one. Cloaker then quickly turned his arms into canons, firing at the two.
Sprig gasped before hopping away with Anne, once again just barely dodging the even bigger blast.
Cloaker walked towards the two. "This was supposed to be a SIMPLE mission...but you are starting to annoy me." He said before shooting Sprig with a laser from his shoulder.
It actually HIT Sprig, sending him slamming against the wall. Sprig grunted, holding his chest as he got back up. That laser wasn't deadly it seemed.
Cloaker then grabbed Anne, finally ready to finish until he was hit across the face with...well, a sledgehammer.
Mrs. Boonchuy growled. "LET GO OF MY DAUGHTER!!!" She boomed before smashing the hammer into Cloaker's side.
Cloaker cried out, and tried to blast her, only to be hit by a drill from Mr. Boonchuy. He backed up, feeling vital parts of his weapons systems slowly go offline. Polly and Hop Pop came out, rushing to Sprig and Anne's side.
"Looks like this is where I take my leave." Cloaker said before he went invisible again, just barely catching a ride with a car.
