Chapter 26: Wit
Olivia rested her back against the walls of her cell. She looked at the wall. It had already been a day, and she couldn't even process everything that had happened...except for Marcy.
She had loved Marcy like a daughter or niece, or however Marcy saw her as. They were family. Olivia would be telling a fat lie if she said she didn't enjoy her and Yunan's antics.
Yunan...she hoped she was ok. She remembered how worried sick she was when Marcy and Yunan came back from a mission on a warship.
"MARCY!! WHAT HAPPENED?!" Olivia exclaimed, rushing over to Marcy and looking over her.
Marcy was in a pirate captain's outfit, giggling before wincing. "My arm just got broken, I'm okay! Promise!"
"BROKEN!?" Olivia exclaimed before whipping around to Yunan, narrowing her eyes.
Yunan gulped. "I may have, uhh, got a little excited about the fighting. I wasn't aware she would join me..."
Olivia sighed and bandaged Marcy's arm, and then looked over Yunan. "You are going to get yourself killed one day, general."
Yunan chuckled. "Death's knocked on my door, I shove it off! For I am General Yunan! Scourge of The Sand Wars! Defeater of Ragnar The Wretched! And the youngest newt ever to achieve the rank of general in the Great Newtopian Army!" She said with pride.
Marcy smiled a bit at that. "Lady Olivia does have a point though! I was worried about you!"
"We both are." Olivia said, bandaging both Yunan's arm and tail.
"Hmmm...I guess I'll take that into consideration from now on." Yunan said.
Olivia smiled fondly at the memory before she remembered how Marcy was killed...by the scourge of Amphibia. The Night...it really was alive. But how? He was killed.
Andrias said he and his ancestors kept it alive...but how did no one know? How did no one figure it out?
But then? She heard fighting. She whipped around to the door of her cell before she gasped.
A Dark Frobot was kicked into the wall and then stabbed...by Yunan. But she was in strange armor. And her blades were now a glowing orange. Yunan looked like she had just escaped something. Even a glowing orange eye was on her chestplate.
Yunan then whipped around to Olivia. "Lady Olivia!"
Olivia smiled. "General! What happened?!"
Yunan slashed Olivia free, with her blades now able to cut through metal with ease. She deactivated them and took Olivia's hand. "The Night ordered for me to be turned to his soldier. He's already turned the other soldiers..."
Olivia's eyes widened. "W...What? This fast?"
"The Night is quick with what he does." Yunan said before looking out the window.
Olivia did the same...and her eyes widened in horror. She didn't want to believe it, but she was looking right at it.
Somehow, in the span of a DAY...the fresh water and grass of Newtopia had turned into sand and rotten ground. Machines were being built. Somehow, The Night and Andrias had turned Newtopia into a wasteland of machines in the span of a single day.
Olivia felt tears prick at her eyes before she looked away. "H...How...oh...what has happened to home...?"
Yunan's eyes went wide and she knelt down, holding Olivia close. "I...I'm so sorry, I...I wasn't aware you would react this way."
"I-I was assigned to protect this place's nature...not watch it burn." Olivia whispered, suddenly hugging Yunan. "...he took Marcy from us...why must he take away Amphibia too?"
Yunan clutched her fist at the mention of Marcy. She and Marcy were friends, and it broke her heart whenever she was reminded that she was gone.
The two stood. Olivia wiped her eyes. "...there has to be SOMETHING we can do to stop this."
Yunan tried to think, but her brain helped her...with nothing. It was just a static noise.
Olivia, on the other hand, realized something. "The Night's mind seems to be contained inside of a robotic machine...maybe where it came from, we can find a way to shut it down."
Yunan smiled. "Brilliant! Let's get to it! But we must hurry. It's likely Andrias will get news of my escape."
They quickly took off, running or sneaking past a bunch of Dark Frobots. After making it towards the place The Core came from, they came across a hallway of Dark Frobots.
One of the Frobots began...speaking. In an incredibly deep and robotic voice. "So, did any of you hear about the giant robot being built in the basement?"
"Oh, I did." Another Frobot said. "I heard its breath smells like death."
A third Frobot spoke. "Where the hell did you hear that? We can't freaking smell."
The first one replied quickly. "Somebody didn't update their senses drive."
"Initiate laughter." They all said in unison. "HA. HA. HA. HA. HA. HA. HA. HA. HA. HA. HA. FUNNY."
Yunan and Olivia looked at each other before Yunan grabbed Olivia and then stabbed her blades against the ceiling, crawling right above the Dark Frobots.
One of the Frobots beeped. "Do you guys hear something?"
"Oh, yeah. It's almost like it's coming from above us." The second Frobot said. "Oh, damn. Real shame we can't raise our heads."
Yunan and Olivia quickly escaped before walking down into some kind of lair. Olivia heard breathing and turned to the corner.
Chained against the wall was some kind of creature made of...moss? Other creatures that looked like ghosts were floating around it. All of the creatures looked to be in some kind of...coma. They had the eyes of The Night.
Olivia walked closer. "The poor things..."
Yunan tilted her head. "What are they?"
"Likely prisoners from other worlds..." Olivia sighed. "Come along. We have to keep moving."
They did just that before coming across a room...with MARCY inside a glowing green tube. She was in armor of some kind, but not Wit's. Dark armor with a glowing orange eye on the chestplate like Yunan's. The eye of The Night.
Olivia's eyes widened when she heard a heart monitor...Marcy was alive.
She quickly opened the tube, and Marcy fell out, the mask falling off her face as she fell, but that's when mechanical arms sprouted from holes in her suit, stopping her from face planting onto the floor.
Marcy's eyes slowly opened and she groaned, holding her head. "...Sashy...? Anna-Banana...?"
Olivia quickly hugged Marcy, laughing as tears fell down. "Y-You're alive...! You're alive!!!"
Marcy became confused as she felt her body functions regain. She moved her arms and legs as she hugged back. "Lady Olivia...? What happened...?"
Yunan just joined the hug, a little relieved herself.
Marcy was trying to remember everything, but it was all a blur. Then, it all came back. Andrias. The vision about her being dragged into darkness. Her shoving Anne out of the way...and dying.
She began to breathe heavily. "I...I died...! W-Where's Anne?! Where's everyone?!"
Olivia's heart broke and she gently cupped Marcy's face. "Marcy, calm down...a lot has happened. It's been a day. Andrias and The Night have turned Newtopia into a wasteland. Anne and The Plantars are most likely back in your dimension."
"As for The Toad Queen and Captain Grime, we have no idea." Yunan said.
Marcy's eyes widened. "T-The Night IS alive...oh, god..."
Then? They heard mechanical whirring. Marcy's eyes went wide with horror before she was grabbed by an all too familar claw and lifted into the air. She SHRIEKED, struggling.
"MARCY!!!" Yunan screamed...before her eyes turned orange and she froze up.
Olivia's eyes widened. "General?! GENERAL?!"
"Leaving with my host already...?" The Core asked as he crawled in, placing Marcy on a machine of some kind. It looked like a throne. Cuffs suddenly went across her wrists and ankles, tying Marcy down.
Marcy gasped and quickly struggled, trying with all her might to escape. "NO, NO! LET ME GO!!!"
The Core just snapped its claws at Marcy as a threat to silence her before turning to Olivia. His eyes glowed before tying Lady Olivia up and lifting her into the air.
"I have to say, I'm disappointed." Andrias said, stepping in. "Oh, Olivia...you really had no idea what was going on, did you?"
"What are you talking about?!" Olivia cried.
The Core then dropped Olivia and loomed over Marcy, the center eye glowing brightly as he stared at Marcy.
Andrias put his hands behind his back. "About everything. Newtopia was LOYAL to our god, who you see before you. We served his every order, as I do now. And now, we've had to resort to using our medical technology to keep him sustained...but my lord was not satisfied."
Olivia turned to The Core, wanting to try and save Marcy, who herself was TERRIFIED of The Core. She stood, but Yunan forced her to her knees.
"When he was brought back to life, he knew that his power alone could not help him conquer the dimensions in our multiverse." Andrias said. "So, he desired intelligence. So, with every generation? He would absorb the mind of Amphibia's most brilliant, gaining access to their inner thoughts and desires...able to corrupt each and every one of them."
Marcy was horrified and kept trying to break out. "T-Then why do you need me?!?"
"My lord craves a host. A PROPER host. My body is far too old to sustain his minds." Andrias explained. "And he wanted the best. The smartest...the only one who could beat me in Flipwart. And the next REINCARNATION of Wit."
Olivia's eyes widened, and Marcy gasped.
The Core then spoke. "Heart, Wit, and Strength were not the first Three Stars...they were only the second. Long ago, during the very birth of YOUR universe...there existed three holy beings. Celestial beings. Andromeda of Heart, Luna of Wit, and Nova of Strength..."
He then raised his head, his orange eyes glowing brighter. And suddenly? Multiple orange eyes surrounded the room and began to project something. It showed blue, green, and pink beings. All three of them raised their hands, surrounding the universe in stars.
"With their might, they could bring light to any amount of darkness. With the help of other Celestials, they gave life to the universe. But Andromeda? She discovered that her and her friends had the ability to TRAVEL to different universes, in which they brought light too as well...but Luna? She had a theory. About the darkness they banished and how it seemed so peaceful."
It then showed the green being, Luna, mixing in a bunch of dark splotches from all across the universes they traveled. It showed her smiling sweetly before combining the darkness. She seemed to be excited, curious to see the being she created.
"My creator, Luna, thought I would be a creature of peace...what she didn't know? The darkness made me naturally inclined...to destroy. To gain as much power and destruction as possible." The Core spoke. "I could have changed...but I didn't want too."
It then showed many orange eyes form in the dark puddle. The dark puddle grew into a hideous monster before it grabbed Luna, and merged with her. Luna let out a bloodcurdling scream, orange energy replacing her green light. She screamed and screamed as horns grew on her head. The screams then stopped...and she began laughing. She opened her eyes, all 10 of them green. An 11th eye grew on her chest.
"The other two fought their friend, but were defeated by my power. They had never come across a being of such darkness like myself." The Core told them. "What I never thought of was that they could fight back inside my mind...they EJECTED from my body, fighting my darkness with their horrible light."
It then showed Andromeda, Luna, and Nova all fighting against The Night. Colorful energy causing them to travel from universe to universe. They did nothing but fighting each time before finally, the original Three Stars blasted The Night into a swamp like universe before teleporting away.
"After our battle created the night sky, I was banished to here...Amphibia." The Core said. "I conquered this miserable dimension with ease...until THEY came. My creator and her friends...but they had been reincarnated into Heart, Wit, and Strength...or rather...Alice, Cecilia, and Katherine."
It then showed Heart, Wit, and Strength gaining their powers and battling The Night. It then showed The Night killing Wit before finally being stabbed and killed by Heart.
"I vowed to Heart I would return...and I did..."
It then showed the king of Newtopia at the time ordering his soldiers to bring the body into a lab. The lab then rebuilt The Night's body into The Core. And as time passed, it grew more and more eyes until it reached 9, with The Night's original eye being at the center and the biggest.
"And now...they have been reincarnated again...into YOU." The Core snarled. "Anne Boonchuy, Marcy Wu, and Sasha Waybright..."
Marcy's eyes were wide with horror. A past version of herself...MADE this monster. And she was still processing that she was not only the reincarnation of a hero, but also a goddess.
Andrias smirked. "And now, Marcy...? YOU will be The Core's new host."
Marcy's eyes widened before the mechanical arms from her armor attached to the machine, activating another function. That's when a helmet with axolotl horns began to lower down. Marcy struggled and struggled, but it was too late.
The helmet lowered onto her head...and she let out the loudest, bloodcurdling, and agonizing scream she could muster. Marcy screamed this horrifying sound into the air...before it stopped.
The Core's eyes shut off suddenly and his robotic body fell onto the ground.
Yunan gasped, shaking her head in horror.
Andrias chuckled. "The time has come for The Core to lead us to our destiny. But...I'll let HER speak for HERSELF..."
Marcy's body began to move, her bones lightly cracking. She shot her arm out of its restraints, and then her other arm followed. She moved both of her legs at once, freeing them. She then fell off her throne and onto her hands and knees. She breathed heavily before suddenly vomiting black and orange sludge.
But as the seconds passed, it stopped. As The Core rested in Marcy's body, it sickness and unwellness slowly disappeared.
Then...Darcy looked at Olivia and grinned the widest grin she could, her teeth turning into fangs as she opened all 10 of her orange eyes, with the final and newest being GREEN. Her fingers slowly turned into sharp claws. "BYE-BYE, MAR-MAR..."
