Chapter 20: Heart's Temple

Eager to try it in one go, the gang headed off to the second temple. But now Marcy was sitting on Joe Sparrow, lacking her powers. Which she missed, since she had gotten them only a little while ago.

Anne was flying, using the Calamity Box's Green Gem to lead them to...the arctic.

Joe Sparrow landed, and Anne landed shortly after. The Plantars and Marcy geared up, but Anne's powers seemed to keep her warm.

Marcy hummed. "Okay, the temple should be...here!"

They looked and saw...a lonely gateway, protecting absolutely nothing. The gang blinked, even Frobo found a way. Anne then flew over, looking from side to side. She called out. "Temple?"

Nothing happened.

Anne patted the snow, but nothing happened. She sighed. "Guess we're outta luck..."

"Oh, don't talk like that!" Polly said. "It's probably here somewhere!"

Sprig waved his arms around. "Maybe it's invisible...!"

Frobo looked from side to side before shrugging and waving his arms around too.

Marcy laughed at Frobo, finding the robot adorable. His A.I. was definitely advanced...she couldn't help but wonder how Amphibia had the technology to build robots back then though. Especially with its current state.

But then? Anne perked her head. "...guys...someone's here."

And indeed, there was. Someone began walking through the snow, and the gang froze. Anne drew her sword, her hair and eyes glowing a bright blue.

Then? Out walked a newt of some kind. She wore a black cloak, and had long gray hair. Her skin was color of oil, with gold as her underbelly. She had red eyes, with one squinted. She carried some kind of staff, shaped like a hook.

Anne narrowed her eyes. "Who is it?!"

The newt looked at Anne...before smirking, and showing...she had only one arm, with her tail serving as the second arm. "...it's been a long time."

Anne blinked. "I've...literally never met you."

The newt suddenly laughed. "Right, I apologize, Anne. You remind me of someone." She said, walking over. She then observed the group and smiled. "I take it you are here to charge the Blue Gem?"

Anne's eyes widened. "How do you know about that? And how do you know my name?"

"I am Valeriana. I am the Guardian of The Second Temple." She said suddenly. "I am connected to the stone myself, so I know all its holders. Which is easy to remember considering there were only three holders of the Blue Gem's power..."

Marcy's eyes widened. "Guardian?"

Valeriana nodded before walking closer. "Yes. I was an old friend of Heart's."

"That would explain the age..." Sprig mumbled, but got a look from the newt and shrunk.

Valeriana then faced Anne and smiled. "You carry her powers, Anne Boonchuy. And you're very much like her."

Anne's hair and eyes glowed a bit brighter at that for some reason before she smiled. "I am...?"

"Kind. Brave. Compassionate. And willing to do the right thing." Valeriana suddenly laughed. "If I didn't see everything you had done, I would be testing you right now. See if you are worthy of what you've proved to be worthy of long ago."

Marcy couldn't help but smile, watching the two talk.

"But Sasha on the other hand...she will be tested if she ever shows." Valeriana said.

Anne's heart broke a bit, but she shook it off. "Yeah, yeah...so, where is the temple?"

Valeriana laughed. "Funny story, there is NO temple."

The gang's eyes widened.

"SAY WHAAAAT?" Hop Pop exclaimed. "But you're a Guardian of The Second TEMPLE!"

Valeriana sighed. "Yes, if you ask me, Strength got lazy with this one. There isn't a temple, but there is a place to charge the Blue Gem." She then turned. "Come, Anne."

The gang began walking, but Valeriana stopped them. "No. Only Anne."

Anne's eyes widened. "Huh?! But, what if they get attacked and I'm not here to protect them!? Marcy doesn't have her powers!"

"What about the robot?" Valeriana asked, using her staff to point at him.

Anne turned and sighed. "I mean, true...alright. But, please, let's be quick."

"Let's hope you can fight quick then." Valeriana said as she stepped closer and waved her staff around. And suddenly, the two teleported.

They were transported to some kind of tall tower, which they were on top of. It looked like an arena of some kind.

Valeriana then held out her hand. "The gem?"

Anne hesitantly took out the Blue Gem, but held back her hand. "...am I gonna have to fight Heart?"

Valeriana nodded. "It's at every temple. And be warned, she is stronger than your last battle. And like Marcy before you? You will have to fight her alone." She sighed. "I cannot help you, even though I want too. If I break in, the challenge will be stopped and we will be unable to charge the Blue Gem."

Anne then gulped. "I'm not gonna die, am I?"

"No! What kind of magical temple do you think we're dealing with?" Valeriana exclaimed. "You will just lose...and be humiliated. Which in some cases, is a fate worse than death."

Anne took a deep breath before giving Valeriana the Blue Gem, and taking out her sword.

Then, in the middle of the tower, a statue of Heart showed. Blue energy wisped from Anne's body and into the statue. Like Wit, the statue glowed a bright blue and then summoned a sword made from blue energy.

Heart drew her sword, her helmet's visor glowing bright.

Anne swung around her sword before walking around the arena, with Heart doing the same. They stared each other down before Heart lunged at Anne. Anne swung her sword, blocking a sword swing.

Heart swung her sword again, clashing with Anne's over and over again. Sparks flew, the glowing blue blades seeming to glow brighter with every clash.

Anne eventually flew high into the air, with Heart following. The two kept clashing, the sound of metal fighting metal filling the air. Anne eventually zoomed circles around Heart before Heart flew out of the circle and threw her sword like a boomerang.

Anne deflected it with her own sword, but Heart just summoned another sword and flew down, slamming down her sword, which Anne blocked.

Heart snarled a bit before breaking their clash and then punching Anne in the face before swinging her sword, sending out a blue energy burst.

It hit Anne, sending her crashing down onto the arena's floor. Heart zoomed back down, landing before her.

Anne flipped back to her feet and began slashing her sword rapidly, sending out a storm of blue energy. All of the blasts hit Heart, causing her to drop her sword again.

Heart stumbled, but Anne then slashed her across the chest before flying, spinning, and then kicked Heart in the chin and sending her flying onto her back. But she got back up.

Anne breathed heavily. "You don't give up, do you?"

Heart didn't answer, summoning two swords into her hands and drawing them.

Anne clutched her sword, her eyes and hair glowing brighter than ever before. She then stomped the ground, sending out a small shockwave of blue energy. She then sheathed her sword and began firing energy from her fists.

Heart was sent flying by the shockwave, and then hit by the energy. She stumbled, right on the edge of the arena.

Anne zoomed over, pointing her sword at Heart's neck. "Give up now?"

Seeming to forget it wasn't the real Heart, she looked into the statue's eyes. They seemed so...lifelike. Was it just the magic?

Heart eventually bowed, accepting her defeat as she turned back into a normal statue.

Anne nodded before turning to Valeriana, who was holding the charged Blue Gem. Valeriana held it out, and Anne took it.

"Good luck, Anne. It was nice meeting you." Valeriana smiled.

Anne couldn't help but smile back before she gasped and felt the same sharp pain, falling to her knees. She breathed heavily, the color draining from her eyes and hair and into the gem. She shook her head before blinking. "How do I get down?"

Valeriana laughed before waving her staff around, sending Anne back. She then narrowed her eyes. "...I hope you never realize that gem was never completely charged, Heart. Your reincarnation, I pray, isn't that clever."

She looked to the beautiful and starry sky. "...if The Night's saying was correct and he still lives? Then, you'll need all the power you can get."
