Chapter 10: Toad Terminator
Anne tossed and turned in her bed, clutching her blankets as she tried to keep her eyes shut. Normally, she'd have the vision of that gladiator again or...happy, lovely dreams. There was also this one REALLY weird dream involving Marcy, but we don't talk about that one.
"W...Who are you...?" Anne mumbled in her sleep, turning in her bed again, the side of her head against her pillow. The Plantars had actually gotten her a bed after she had spent so long in Amphibia...but it wasn't as comfortable as usual.
In her dream, she was in a completely orange void...staring face to face with someone. Anne was paralyzed at the sight of their horrifying face and reached for her sword, but it wasn't there. She looked up...her powers weren't working.
The person she was staring at was a black demon of some kind in armor, with two sets of horns. Two on each side of its head. It wore armor, with a glowing orange eye on its chest. And its black face had nearly 9 orange eyes...with a green gem on its forehead. The demon itself...looked incomplete. Its horns were either too big or too small, or even merged with each other. Like it needed one more thing to be finished.
Anne stepped back, but that's when she felt something oozing across her boots. She looked down and saw the orange void was practically gluing itself to her feet. Anne screamed, trying to move, but she was stuck. She kept trying to break free, but to no avail.
"WHO ARE YOU?!?" Anne shrieked at the demon, still trying to free herself. She was terrified, yet her powers weren't working.
The demon kept staring at her, its back now hunched like it was some kind of zombie.
Anne screamed, feeling her boots completely covered. The orange ooze was BURNING, like fires and the more it covered Anne's legs, she just screamed in both pain and fear. The ooze continued, oozing its way across her body.
The demon took a step forward before its eyes grew, as if it was signaling something.
The ooze suddenly stopped at the demon's command, and Anne was now completely stuck. She screamed again, feeling the burning feeling of this strange substance. "L-LET ME OUT!!! L-LET ME OUT, PLEASE!!!!"
The demon was silent...before it perked its head and turned around.
A person attacked him, completely pink with no facial features or physical features other than her hair, which matched the rest of her body. She wielded a sword. The person screamed, slashing at the demon, who just lifted its wrist to block the attack.
The person growled before thrusting the sword forward, but the demon swung its hand, shattering the sword before it could touch it.
The demon's eyes glowed bright before it threw its hand towards the person, wrapping its fingers tightly around the person's neck, watching her choke and scream.
Anne just watched in horror, still feeling the burning get hotter and hotter until she felt like she was on fire.
The demon heard both of their screams...and seemed thrilled before slowly turning its head to Anne, staring into her blue eyes with its orange ones as it strangled the girl in pink.
Anne woke up with a scream, shooting up in her bed with heavy breathing. Her hair and eyes were glowing a bright blue our of pure FEAR. She then realized she was in the Plantar's basement again, sweating bullets.
"J...Just a n-nightmare..." Anne whispered, trying to calm down. "J-Just a n-nightmare..."
She got up, still wearing her armor since she didn't have any other clothes. She should start working on that. But sleeping in her armor didn't seem to bother her.
HER armor...that seemed wrong. It belonged to a hero that fought a monster for 1,000 years with three others. It wasn't Anne's. It was probably the only reason Wartwood wasn't suspicious of her. Because of Heart's armor. They thought she was a hero. Which she could say she was considering how many times she had protected their town and gone on adventures with The Plantars.
But it still felt wrong to call this armor her own. But then again...it also felt wrong to take it off?
"Anne?" Sprig called, hopping down. "Are you ok? I heard screaming-" He then saw her blue hair and eyes and rushed over. "W-What's wrong?"
Anne took a deep breath. "N-Nightmare. Bad dream. I'll be alright." She said.
Sprig was clearly a little concerned, but he nodded. "If you say so. Come on, Hop Pop's made breakfast."
Anne smiled, her hair and eyes turning back to normal. "I could use some Beetle Soup." Her eyes then widened. "I'VE BEEN HERE TOO LONG."
Once they got upstairs however, Hop Pop and Polly were looking outside, with Hop Pop seeming a bit worried.
Anne tilted her head before looking out the window herself and gasping when she saw...toad warriors, marching around the valley, stopping from house to house. The frogs they talked too seemed terrified of them as they handed small pouches to the toads.
"Another tax collection." Hop Pop said. "But why this early...?"
Anne shook her head. "Wait, tax collectors? THOSE are tax collectors?"
"They're from Toad Tower!" Polly explained. "Very violent place. The Toad Queen sends toads down a few times every year to collect taxes."
"And I don't have much this year." Hop Pop sighed before the color drained from his face when he saw the toad warriors walking towards their door. He then turned to the kids. "G-Go to the living room, kids. I'll handle this."
Sprig and Polly's gaze softened and they headed into the living room, with Anne slowly following. She didn't feel very easy about these toads...she had a feeling a fight would be involved.
Hop Pop then heard the knock and grabbed a pouch filled with some coppers and he answered.
"I have the money-"
"We're not here just for the tax." The leading toad said. "We'd like to ask you a question."
Hop Pop tilted his head. "Okay...?"
"We've been led to believe you are keeping one of Heart's kind in this home." The toad told him. "The Toad Queen has declared her an impostor of Heart's legacy and she will now be visiting the Queen personally."
Hop Pop's eyes widened. "Whoa now! Anne has saved this-"
"Anne?" The toad asked before turning to his men. "This is the place. Find the human. And you do not need to worry about the tax."
The toads grabbed their spears and then marched into the house, shoving Hop Pop to the side.
"OOF!" Hop Pop cried before growling. "This is an invasion! Outta my ding dang house!"
Anne gasped and quickly stood, and that's when the toads pointed spears at her.
The leading toad walked over. "You are going to have to come with us."
Anne growled, her hair and eyes starting to glow as she hovered in the air and summoned her sword. "Heck no, bad guys!"
One of the toads turned to the others. "Bad guys? I thought we were the good guys."
"Have you SEEN how we dress?" The replying toad...replied.
The toads pointed their spears at Anne again, but Anne quickly slashed them all in half with her sword and then grabbed Sprig and Polly, flying them over to Hop Pop as she landed in front of them and then clutched her sword.
Anne then swung her sword at shields and spears alike, growling and screaming during the battle. She was doing whatever she could to not only defend herself, but The Plantars.
After 5 minutes of fighting, Anne heard screaming from The Plantars and gasped.
Two toad soldiers held spears to them, with the leading toad gripping a sword. "We won't hurt them, Heart Impostor! The Queen has REQUESTED you come with us. We were instructed not to hurt anyone, but thanks to you, we've had to disobey orders." He growled. "So I'll cut you a deal. You set down the sword and come with us...and The Plantars can come with you, no harm done to them."
Anne didn't even need to think and sheathed her sword, eventually being cuffed. "Huh?! HEY!"
"You DID attack us however." The leading toad said. "This is just a precaution." He said before walking outside, with the toads following.
Anne and The Plantars were also forced outside before being lead onto a wagon cart, all of them sitting down as it took off.
The villagers saw their hero and The Plantars being taken away and gasped. Even a little frog girl looked at Anne and clutched her mother's leg. "Heart...?" She asked.
Anne's heart broke at that before she just focused on the ride.
Sprig gulped, but tried to lighten things up. "M-Maybe The Queen just wants to meet you?"
"The toads called Anne a Heart Impostor...I don't think so." Polly said.
Anne's hair glowed again. "NOT HELPING!"
After an hour or so, they arrived at Toad Tower. The Plantars and Anne stepped out of the cart and were directed inside of the tower. Anne could see statues of all kinds being polished. The statues were of the same person...and her eyes widened.
It was the gladiator she had seen in her visions...the one wielding the warhammer! She read the nameplates...and saw the name 'Strength'.
"THAT's Strength?!" Anne cried.
Sprig shivered a bit. "She doesn't look like that much of a hero..."
The toads heard this and growled. "How dare you! Strength was OUR hero and protected us all from The Night and all kinds of monsters!"
Sprig squeaked. "I'll be quiet."
After more walking...they made it to the throne room. Anne started to walk towards the throne, with The Plantars being held back.
Anne now had a VERY good look at The Toad Queen, who was sitting in her pink, brown, and silver throne. She wore Strength's armor and carried her warhammer. In fact, she looked exactly like all the statues outside...was...this Strength? No. Strength was dead and she would have been a crusty old lady.
This person was young, or at least seemingly...wait...she had peach skin. Frogs weren't peach. Nor were they this tall.
The Toad Queen stood from her throne. Her eyes glowed a bright pink through her helmet as she SMASHED her hammer down onto the ground, and then let go of it, letting it rest there.
The shockwave caused Anne to shiver and fall to her knees.
The Toad Queen started to speed walk towards her, looking down at Anne...before reaching for her helmet.
Anne's eyes widened, but they widened even further when she saw The Toad Queen's true face... a peach skinned girl with blonde hair stuck up in a ponytail, and glowing pink eyes. She looked to be no older than 15.
"...Sasha?"
