Chapter 24 | adult life

There was something Luka had noticed about Adrien since they'd been together. Now that he was out of his toxic environment and able to start healing, drop that perfect model boy mask, some of his core traits that he'd pushed away were starting to become more obvious.

Adrien craved structure. There could be many reasons for it, and in truth it was probably a mix of varying reasons. It could be his probable autism that liked predictability, it could be the comfort of having control over his own life, it could be the fact he was so used to living on a schedule that not having one made him anxious. But one thing was for sure, Adrien needed to know when, why and how certain things happened. Otherwise he'd just get anxious about all the possibilities and spiral. So when the accidental but not unwelcome proposal happened, Luka could tell he was getting a bit anxious over the whole thing. They'd already decided not to worry about an actual wedding until AFTER he was done with university and Adrien was done with his book. That way they'd actually have time to plan the damn thing. But that wasn't all there was to stress over.

Getting married was a big deal, it was a legally binding contract as well as an emotional one and generally considered a big step in life. And what was after that? Well, they didn't know. The whole thing was a happy accident from the very beginning. So over the past few weeks, between his classes, Luka had been doing some research and a lot of thinking. If Adrien wanted structure and comfort in knowing what lay ahead, he'd give it to him.

First thing he had to address was obvious. Italy or Paris. They both currently lived in Italy, but Luka's whole family was back in Paris. Adrien didn't want to go back to the city that gave him so much trauma, and in truth Luka didn't mind staying in Italy, he liked it here. He'd just have to factor in regular trips back to Paris to see his family in the future. Especially given his sister was literally having a kid, there was no way Luka wasn't going to be in his niece or nephew's life. So he'd decided staying in Italy was the plan on that front, with regular trips to Paris for family occasions.

Next, living arrangements. Currently they lived separately, and likely would stay that way while Luka was in university since it was an easier commute from his apartment to campus. But post graduation and post wedding? The obvious choice was moving in together. The catch was Nathalie. She and Adrien really relied on each other, not just as family but as caretakers. They'd both been left disabled by their time under Gabriel's roof. Nathalie from the broken miraculous and Adrien from the trauma. Actually, it was likely Adrien already WAS partly disabled from birth, he'd always had issues with his legs. But the combination of it being left untreated for so long, and the fact trauma can affect the body as well as the mind, only made his condition worse. He and Nathalie literally needed each other to live, they took care of each other because they couldn't do it alone. Adrien ran the errands when Nathalie was having a stuck in bed all day flare up, and she'd take him to doctors appointments when he couldn't make the long walk. Most married men probably wouldn't want their mother in law living with him, but this situation was different. Not only did Luka like Nathalie anyway, she and Adrien literally needed each other. Luka didn't mind her being a third wheel in the household, she'd give them their space anyway.

Perhaps they could move to one of those houses that are two in the same property? Connected by a door but separated by thick walls. The boys could have one side, Nathalie the other. And they could still be close while also having privacy. Or maybe apartments right next to each other, or a house with a granny flat?

There was options, that was the point there.

And of course, there was the career aspect. Luka knew he was going to end up in the music field, he was getting that degree for a reason. His end goal was to work making custom instruments. Adrien could definitely make it as a writer, even if this was his first and only book, the revenue from its sales would be a good amount. The only good thing about the Agreste name was the family fortune, so Adrien and Nathalie were basically set for life already. But medical care was expensive and they were both disabled. If they needed the extra money, a steady income would be a great help.

So Luka had all the potential options thought out, and presented them all to Adrien for his opinions. Adrien was left sitting across from him at the dining table looking at all the notes rather stunned. He always knew Luka was one to consider others needs, but gods DAMN the man was thorough. He'd even gone looking into disability aid and its relations to marriage in Italy. And he'd bought Adrien his favourite bubble tea on the way too.

"You... really thought all this out huh?" Adrien muttered.

"You seemed anxious" Luka simply replied.

"Well... yeah a bit. But damn, you've considered things I didn't even think to consider"

"You've always liked predictability and structure, and if I'm going to marry you I want you to be comfortable in that marriage"

Adrien put the notes down, reaching over the table to hug his fiancé and plant a kiss on his cheek.

"What did I do to deserve you?" He smiled.

"You existed" Luka replied, returning the hug and cheek kiss.

"I know it's still far in the future, and we can figure out all the details as they come, but knowing our options... it makes thing so much easier to handle"

The moment those words left Adrien's mouth, he paused to process them and cringed slightly.

"That was the most adult thing I've ever said" he laughed.

"You're in your 20s hun, we are adults now" Luka snickered.

"Yeah but I still feel like a dumb teenager most of the time. Maybe my frontal lobe is finally starting to fully develop..."

Maybe the structure side or being an adult wasn't that bad. It felt good knowing what to expect, sure some surprise and spontaneity every so often was fun, but to someone like Adrien, knowing where to go and what do expect was a lot less stressful than sitting around waiting for the next potential disaster. He could actually live now, not just survive.
