Chapter 16 | life goes on
It seemed like both the couffiane twins had some news to share, because once Adrien had told Luka about the call he picked up last night, Luka was quick to open his laptop and video chat his sister.
Still in bed mind you- Adrien's bed.
And it seems both twins had their honorary blondes with them too.
"Shut the fuck up- Adrien?! Holy shit hi!" Roses had said almost the moment the call connected.
"Hi" he laughed in reply "long time no see"
"Luka you never told me you'd found Adrien again"
"I thought Juels would have told you!" Luka said.
Jueleka shrugged.
"Forgot. A lot going on, but still- hi! Damn you look different, since when was your hair wavy?" She said.
"Since forever but modelling made me kill it with products" Adrien complained.
The girls definitely looked different. Not in any dramatic way, they were will the same old Rose and Jueleka just older and seemingly healthier. Adrien recalled finding out Rose had some chronic issues back in school, she seemed healthier now. Her hair grown out a bit longer, her skin more tinted with life and her eyes much brighter. Juleka looked healthier too, mentally that is. Still as gothic as ever, but she was smiling, spoke clearer, more full of life. It was nice to see, the two had definitely been going through it behind the scenes back in school.
"Dude there's so much to catch up on" Jueleka said.
"Ugh I know, I feel like there's a million details I keep forgetting to mention every time we talk" Luka replied.
"Ok before I say my thing, I NEED to know what Adrien has been doing. All I heard from useless at telling me things Luka here was that you live close by now"
Luka feigned offence, scoffing playfully.
"I am not useless- ok yeah I am, I forget things" he snickered.
"Fuck I mean, how do I even explain everything? Very long story short- left Paris because yay trauma... for a year or so I was basically just a full time carer for Nathalie while she went though the thick of her illness. She's ok by the way, much much better. Then we moved cities to be closer to the clinic for treatment... kind of just moped around for a while to be honest, had no idea where to go from there..." Adrien explained.
The girls gave him a sympathetic nod, they had a feeling Adrien would have been going through the mental trenches for a while after the whole hawkmoth thing.
"Then I run into Luka at his work, we pick up where we left off. I'm a writer now, well- will be when I finish the first draft-" Adrien continued.
"Send me the draft I'll beta read, I need to see this" Jueleka said.
"Me too! You always got the BEST grades in creative writing, I need to know" Rose added.
That's three separate beta readers he's got here now, his boyfriend, his boyfriends sister and his boyfriends sisters girlfriend. And to be honest Nathalie will probably want to read it to, so make that four beta readers. This book is going to be absolutely flawless with that many eyes on it to catch typos or plot holes.
"Sure, no chance of any mistakes with this many beta readers" Adrien snickered.
"We'll go through that book with a fine toothed comb, don't you worry" Luka chuckled.
That was mostly all Adrien had to update on, aside from the whole father dying thing. But that was all over the news anyway, the girls probably already knew.
"And then you know... my dad gets beat up in prison..." Adrien shrugged.
"Oh my god yeah, I saw that on the news. Literally almost dropped my phone" Jueleka replied.
"Honestly I'm kind of... numb about it. Not looking forward to journalists hounding me for a statement though, ugh. Luka was there literally the morning the news dropped so I'll be fine... I have someone to lean on"
Adrien gave Luka a smile, and instinctively Luka wrapped an arm around him and kissed his cheek. Immediately, both girls gasped.
"LUKA YOU NEVER TOLD ME-" Jueleka exclaimed.
"Oh yeah-" Luka replied.
Adrien just laughed, how did he forget information like that? Adrien had told him that he COULD tell his family but to have them keep it on the down low for now. Otherwise the media would absolutely go nuts with the Gabriel death story AND knowing Adrien has a BOYFRIEND.
"WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN?!" She added.
"Uh... a few months ago" Luka replied.
"MONT- LUKA COUFFIANE-"
He snickered, wasn't the first time he'd got a reaction like this.
"You can tell mum and dad, just have them keep it hush for now. Don't need media up our asses when the Gabriel shit is already happening"
"Can I be brutally honest here?" Rose cut in.
Attention turned to her, and her mischievous grin.
"I always knew you two were into each other" she said.
"Wh- how?" Luka asked.
"Vibes"
He gave her a confused look for a moment, but then he thought about it a bit... and he realised yeah, she was right.
"Well..." he muttered.
"To be honest- yeah. The closet was glass I was just very oblivious as a teenager..." Adrien snickered.
"We're you ever! Marinette was practically drooling over you and here you are looking in literally every other direction. Then again, if you ended up liking boys anyway no wonder you never put two and two together" Juleka laughed.
Actually now she mentioned that... yeah that's probably why he was so oblivious to girls liking him. He was always more into men, even if he did like a FEW girls here and there. It was mostly boys. And in all seriousness, his mummy issues definitely didn't help. He tended to get attached to strong women, not even necessarily in a romantic way, just this craving to have a stronger girl to rely on. But as Nathalie became a mother figure to him, those issues started to heal.
"How is she by the way? Haven't heard from her in a while" Luka asked.
"Oh my god dude, she just CANNOT get out of love triangles. You should see the mess that is her, Zoe and Kagami. They all so clearly like each other but gay people can't ever flirt normally, always gotta be some weird shit like a love triangle" Rose laughed.
Luka sighed and chuckled. Of course. Never easy with Marinette and love. He'd know, he dated her and that didn't go well.
"Typical" he said.
"I know right. But speaking of relationships, there's actually something we need to tell you" Jueleka began.
Luka gave her a squint, he had a feeling he knew where this was going. He knew his twin, he knew how long she'd been with Rose too...
"Don't give me that squint-" she laughed.
"We're twins, I know you. I'm right aren't I?" Luka said.
Adrien gave them an amused look, that twin telepathy never failed to amuse him. The girls gave each other an exited smile and just as Luka suspected, there was a ring on his sisters finger shown to the camera.
"I KNEW IT! FINALLY!" Luka smiled.
"WE'RE GETTING MARRIED BITCHES!!" Jueleka exclaimed.
Watching the twins getting exited for each other was always so wholesome...
Before the boys could get any words of congratulations out, there was something else the girls had to say. Rose spoke up.
"ANNNDDD! The wedding won't be for a while because something came up- we were looking into it for a while but we got the chance recently and we were quick to take it before someone else could snatch our spot" She began.
Now Luka was a little confused, he expected them to get engaged soon enough, they'd been together since the very start of high-school after all.
"You ever heard of a bone marrow baby?" Jueleka said.
For a moment Luka had to process, remembering what that meant. And when he remembered reading an article Juleka had sent him a while go, about how bone marrow can be used to have kids without a father was becoming a more readily available option for mothers, it clicked.
"Juleka shut up-" he began.
She just smiled, holding up an ultrasound to the camera.
"SHUT THE FUCK UP- YOU'RE JOKING!"
"Nope, looks like the twin gene skipped me though, only one in there... that we can see" Juleka said.
Cue hyped brother, soon to be an uncle.
Adrien was stunned for a moment there. He could have sworn they were only graduating school a few weeks ago but here they are engaged and expecting a child. While he was obviously very happy for them, and it was adorable seeing how hyped Luka was for his sister, it made Adrien wonder... had everyone else moved on?
Here he was, almost 23. No job, no education past high school, barely any family left. Sure, his legacy as an Agreste meant he'd never have to work another day in his life, his fathers fortune all for him and Nathalie. But that wasn't the point, a job or university wasn't the point. A person can make it without either in varying ways.
His first proper relationship had only just started. He still felt like a dumb teenager sometimes, despite knowing he was an adult now.
Everyone around him, had grown up into functional adults. While he felt he'd grown into nothing but a tall child.
