CHAPTER FIFTY FIVE—
the hypocrite in a gi.
"I don't understand." Sadie gave a nervous laugh as she stood infront of Johnny, Daniel, Sam, and Chozen. "You chose me?"
"Chozen did." Daniel confirmed. "He wants you to fight at the competition."
"But, i'm not the best fighter. I'm really not." she gave him a look. "Sam is better then I am."
"Better competition fighter, yes. Better Cobra Kai fighting? You." he poked her in the chest with a nod of his head. "Much potential. Much."
"You know he's right." Sam smiled at her. "You have more drive, more love for it. I'm gonna do it for what happened at the All Valleu, and it'll cloud my judgement. Not you."
"What do you say, Fangs?" Johnny smiled as he shoved her head. "You wanna be my best fighter again?"
"Again?" she gasped. "When did it stop?"
"Never." he promised.
"Come on." Daniel smiled at her. "Time to train and prepare you."
"Good luck." Sam offered her a smile as Sadie followed.
"You gotta come with." she waved her girlfriend to follow. "Who am I gonna practice on?"
Sam sighed but followed with a smile.
"Hey." Eli stood next to Sadie as they entered the Cobra Kai dojo. "How do you feel?"
"Like they made a mistake." she adjusted her gi. "Sam is so much better then I am."
"If Chozen picked you, I'd trust his judgement." he told her with a minor eyebrow raise. "Who knows, maybe we'll both win."
Sadie turn with a half grin. "What? For old times sake?"
"I mean, how many times did we win in this dojo?" he rose his eyebrows and looked around. "Old times sake."
Sadie smiled, nodding her head as they separated. Sam came to her side next. "You look nervous."
"It's been a while since i've fought Tory." Sadie said honestly. "She's-"
Sadie wanted to say, deep down, that she still cared about her.
"-really strong." she glanced at Sam.
"So are you." she promised with a nod of her head. "What do you always tell me about doubting myself?"
"Are you using my words against me?" Sadie gave her a smirk.
"Hey." Sam rose her hands in surrender. "I'm just quoting you."
It made Sadie laugh loudly. "Like i'm an inspirational quote off some old ladies Facebook page?"
"Those are the best." Sam defended the matter as they both laughed.
"Thank you, Sensei Silver for offering to host these matches in your dojo on such short notice." one of the judges looked toward Cobra Kais side.
"Offering or demanding?" Daniel scoffed.
"Well we do have actual tournament regulation mats here, so it really was the only option." Silver said back with nothing but passive aggression.
"We'll begin with the boys fight." the judge confirmed. "We have invited a local referee to ensure impartiality. First to three points wins. Time to begin."
Miyagi-Fang cheered for Eli as he walked to the mat.
"Eli Moskowitz and Kenny Payne, please take the mat." the judge encouraged the pair of boys as they both did so, bowing to the ref while their sides cheered for them.
"Fight!"
Kenny yelled as he immediately kicked to Eli, fast in his feet as he swung around and tried to hit him. Eli blocked him a few times before Kenny's feet smashed into his side. "Point! 1-0, Payne."
"Robby." Sadie whispered to him to get his attention. "Get over here."
Robby was 100% certain she was about to smack the shit out of him, leaving him shocked when that was not the matter she went with. "You trained this kid, didn't you?"
"Yeah, but not like this." he told her honestly. "He's deep in Cobra Kai, I really don't know what to do."
Sadie gave him a look. "Eli was too. It was really bad, you know?"
Robby nodded. "How do I do?"
"There isn't anything you can do." Sadie told him honestly. "You care from a distance. Kenny has to want to change and want to see the damage Cobra Kai is doing. It's hard, knowing you have that sort of fearful power. It's hard to let go, it's not as easy as it was for you. Kenny will come around eventually, like the rest of us."
Robby let her words sink in. "Thanks."
Kenny kicked to him again, but Eli kicked him in return. They each blocked each other but were at the same pace this time. Eli kicked off the ground and kicked Kenny in the face.
"Yes!" Johnny cheered.
"Out of bounds." the ref shook his head. "No point."
"What? What, are you serious?" Eli asked him in complete disbelief.
"Come on, ref. That's horseshit. He made contact in bounds!" Johnny defends his student.
"Are you kidding me?" Sadie yelled at him.
"No point. Back on the line." the ref went on, making the boys back up again.
"Fight!"
Kenny kicked at Eli, getting both blocked before he swung to him. Eli blocked every one, swinging his legs around as Kenny's elbow came down and hit him in the back of the leg. He cried out and hit the mat. Sadie winced as Robby did the same. "Yeah, I never taught him that."
"I believe you." Sadie winced, Sam knew it wasnt the time to be happy, but she really was listening to them get along.
"Illegal strike. That's a warning." the ref told Kenny.
"Warning? He should be disqualified." Daniel spoke in disbelief.
"It's fine, he just caught me off guard." he shook his head as he stood up.
"Are you sure, Eli?" Daniel nodded.
He hesitated. "No more Eli. It's time to uncage the Hawk."
"Gimme some skin!" Sadie held her hand out, Eli smacking his palm with hers before joined the mat.
"Fight!"
Hawk went to block his punch but Kenny hit him right in the chest, making every single person in that dojo cringed, feeling his pain. "Point. 2-0. Payne."
"Hawk!" Miguel yelled in fear as he laid on the ground, whispering and gasping for air. Sam grabbed Sadie's hand in panic when Eli wasnt moved, laying there as if he was dead. Sadie tried to go forward, but the senseis did before her as Sam held her back.
"Hawk." Johnny crouched down. "What's wrong?"
"I can't...can't- can't breath." he managed to get out, clutching his heart.
"Can you continue?" the ref looked down at him.
"You have a medic or something!" Sadie yelled at Silver from across the mat.
"That's a forfeit." the ref confirmed, lifting Kenny's arm. "Winner, Payne."
"Can you breath?" the medic felt on Eli, letting him come down with a nod. "I think he's okay. Just got the wind knocked out of him."
"Looks like you got a new name!" Kenny mocked toward Eli. "Faux-Hawk."
"Jesus christ." nerves struck Sadie bad. Between what just happened, and her talk with Robby, too much was going on. Sadie's heart rate was going through the roof as she immediately made a B-line to the bathroom. It was so unlike her, she could always handle bad situations. But, for some weird reason, something about seeing Kenny really hit her hard. She grasped into the sink and waited for a breath to come.
"Sadie?" Sam opened up the door. "What's the matter?"
"I can't do it." as if it couldn't get worse, she started to cry. She was fucking crying, and it pissed her for. "What the fuck is wrong with me?"
Sam locked the door and walked forward. She was just as confused as Sadie was, worrying this was a depression episode. But, they never came on so suddenly. They built up, they both knew so. Sam didn't touch her, she could tell Sadie needed space as she yanked her gi off and stood in a tank top. "I can't do it."
"Sadie." Sam walked closer to stand next to her. "What-was it Eli? Did that scare you?"
"It wasn't Eli." she rubbed her eyes. "It's Kenny."
Sam was really confused then, because Kenny Payne was never someone Sadie feared or even considered much of a competition. "Kenny?"
"Just looking at him." she cried into the sink. "I can't believe I was like that, Sam!"
Her voice echoed off the walls. Sam gapped. "You aren't like him. You changed, you wanted to. You can't-"
"No." she cut her off. Here it goes. "I haven't changed."
"Yeah, you have." Sam corrected.
"It was me." Sadie admitted as she looked at her. "The video of Kyler. That was me."
Sam was confused. "I don't-"
Then it hit her. The viral live stream of someone kicking Kylers ass out of no where. "That was you under the mask?"
"I'm a hypocrite." Sadie laughed through her tears. "No one else can act like em, but it's okay when I do it. I genuinely believe that, Sam. I'm constantly convincing myself that I have an excuse to act like that. Like Kenny, and Tory, and Kyler. I act like i'm still in fucking Cobra Kai and tell myself it's okay!"
"Sadie." Sam stared at her. She wanted to be mad, but she couldn't when Sadie knew what her problem was, that she could sit here and admit it. "You can say whatever you want, but you don't act like you're still in Cobra Kai. No, there's not an excuse for being against their ways but still doing them yourself, but you are nothing like then. Nothing."
Sam cupped her face. "You're so passionate about things. You get angry and upset and act out in ways, but it's not for no reason. It doesn't make it okay, but you don't hurt people just to see them hurt. You hurt people that deserve it deep down. You are nothing like a Cobra Kai."
Her gaze shifted down but allowed herself to calm down in Sams hold. "I'm never gonna be able to shut that part of me off."
"I know." Sam nodded. "You don't have to, you just need to learn to control it. You went from Cobra Kai to Eagle Fang, you've never learned control. I'm not saying you need to be a full Miyagi-Do, but if you let Mr.Miyagis ways in, you can find that balance and control. Look at Eli."
Sadie shut her eyes. "Okay."
Sam smiled, Sadies eyes opened. "I still can't do this. I don't want to go out there and fight unless I can represent Miyagi-Do as well. I owe you guys that. I don't wanna do it, I don't trust myself not to look like a hypocrite out there. I want to be able to show Kenny and everyone else something better."
Sam stared as Sadie nodded. "I want you to do it, Sam."
She let it sink in with a couple blinks. "It that's what you really want?"
Sadie leaned in and hugged her, Sam rubbed her back before they joined hands and walked out to inform everyone what was going on. The team was smart enough not to ask, and the sensis chose to understand. Sadie gave Chozen a guilty look. "I'm sorry, Sensei. I just don't think i'm ready."
"Why I chose you." he pointed at her with a nod. "Because you can admit it, and will put others first."
"We begin our girls fight." the ref spoke, getting all of their attention. "Samantha LaRusso and Tory Nichols, please take the mat."
Tory was nowhere in sight.
The judge looked to Cobra Kai. "Tory Nichols?"
After spreading out to look for her, she was not here.
Sensei Silver approached the judges, informing them of something while the new sensei sent Devon on the mat. Sadie was really glad Sam took this on for her, she knew she wouldn't be able to fight Devon.
"Face me. Bow. Face each other. Bow." the ref nodded to the girls. "Ready? Fight!"
Devon swung first, her fist headed toward Sam as the LaRusso girl backed away, blocking her hits and kicks. She kicked, Devon blocked it before Sam spun around and kicked her in the ribs.
"No point. That's shoulder. No point." the ref spoke.
"Fucking liar." Sadie mumbled under her breath with a glare.
"Keep fighting!"
Sam grunted as she kicked hard toward Devon, blocking each kick before Devon kicked Sam in the arm. "Point. 1-0, Lee."
"There was no contact!" Daniel tossed his hands up.
Sam called a times and ran to her side of the mat, running to her Dad.
"Sam!" Sadie got her attention. "Take your own advice, lady!"
Sam took Sadie's advice, the girls getting back on the mat.
"Fight!"
Sam blocked each of Devon's punches, ducking down to spin on the floor and knock her feet out from under her, punching her in the chest. They all cheered as she was granted the point, the ref clearly wasn't able to cheat them out of that.
"Fight!"
Devon tried to kick fast, too fast as Sam dodged her and was able to kick her in the chest. Sadie silently cheered, but it was clear she was her biggest fan.
"Fight!"
Devon and Sam got close for this one, both doing very well as they blocked each other. Sam dropped to the ground and rolled over her shoulder, kicking at her as the two stood up again. Sam caught her leg, shoving it away before blocking every single punch she threw her way. Sam jumped up, kicking her one final time.
"Woo!" Sadie clapped loudly.
The ref looked to Silver with an exhale. "Point. Winner, LaRusso!"
Sam ran to her immediately as Sadie squeezed her tightly. "You're my hero, LaRusso."
"Well, we haven't won the whole thing yet." Sam laughed and pulled back.
"Doesn't matter." Sadie promised, cupping her face and pulling her into a passionate kiss.
The judges had a decision in minutes. "We have reached an agreement. As expected, we were impressed with the skills, precision and discipline of the new Sekai Taikai qualifier....Cobra Kai."
Sadie frowned as her shoulders fell, The judges looked at their combined dojo next. "As for our other dojo, we admired your unusual mix of styles and underdog spirit...and we think you could be quite an addition to the competition. Therefore, we've decided that your dojo has also qualified."
While everyone began to celebrate, Sadie was destined to do what her heart knew she needed to. It was time to retire the mask, and it was time to let Mr.Miyagi in.
