Chapter Eight: Sam: Soldiers
"This is what I have been meaning to show you."
She held up a vial of clear liquid, and then gave it to Major Carter. The Major took the vial and tilted it back and forth, her eyes planted on the liquid inside. "What is it?" She asked.
"It is the serum I have used to improve our people."
"You inject it into yourselves, I'm assuming?"
"Yes. It starts from the time they are a year old, and continues. They take the injections once a day."
"Its like tritonin." Sam muttered.
Dr. Slache looked confused. "Is it necessary?" Sam asked.
"No, not anymore. It is available to those who provide our defenses. No one else. The regulations are strict to become a soldier, so just anyone can't get a hold of it. We also give it to those with illness or deformities."
"Surely it could become addicting right?" Sam handed the vial back to Dr. Slache.
"That is why only doctors are allowed to administer it. No one could possibly overdose." Dr. Slache crossed her arms.
Sam thought about this for a moment. There has to be some side effect. This can't be totally safe, can it?
"So you're saying there is no side effects?" She asked.
"Nothing permanent. However, this took plenty of testing. And there are still few problems with the drug. It seems that a quarter of our population have had a reaction to the drug. I'm not sure why."
"That's odd. Do you mind if I was to take some of this back to the SGC with me? I just need enough to do a few tests."
Dr. Slache was hesitant. "How do we know we can trust each other, Major?" She asked. "How do I know I can trust you?"
She was right. Could they trust each other?
~
Sam wasn't sure why Dr. Slache seemed to act...a little strange, at times. Some days she acted like she trusted Sam, and some days, she was the opposite. Sam couldn't blame her though, SG-1 was the same way. Security ran tight lately, because of Gou'ald oppression, and no one was safe.
She met Teal'c outside. "What have you learned, Major Carter?" He asked.
"Dr. Slache showed me a vial of her drug. She apparently used it to make her people stronger. She also uses it on soldiers."
Teal raised an eyebrow. "Have you seen these soldiers, Major Carter?"
"No, not yet. She seems to be afraid of a security breech."
"The Gou'ald are parasites that seek to destroy all. She does not wish for them to learn this secret."
"If they got a hold of that serum, it's possible they could become more dangerous."
Sam spotted Jack and Daniel walking towards them. Daniel had three books in hand, his eyes beaming with curiosity. Jack looked as if he was pondering something.
"Sorry were late," Jack began, "Daniel was having too much fun."
Sam grinned. "What did you find?" She asked.
"Oh, a few dusty books. Nothing much. Although, it is interesting to note-"
"What did you find, Carter?"
"Dr. Slache has a serum that she inject into her soldiers. She says it gives them access to skills they possess. It makes them stronger, faster, and smarter than before. At least, that's what she told me."
Jack nodded. "Is there any chance of me getting any of that?" He asked.
"I'm still working on it, Sir."
"Daniel,"
"Yes Jack?"
"We've got an alliance to make."
