Chapter Two
Delaney stepped back. "You seem perfectly fine. I don't see anything that indicates any harm was done."
"See, Van, I told you I was fine. Can we go now?"
"Now hold on, I said I didn't see anything that doesn't mean I'm releasing you. I'd like to keep you here for observation overnight."
Oliver hopped down from the exam table. "I'm fine, Doctor. If for any reason I suddenly don't feel fine then Van can haul me back here and you can fuss over me. All right?"
"I'd rather you remained here, Dr. Kain."
"I appreciate the worry, Doc, but I'm good." He strode from the room.
"If there is even the slightest sign that something might be wrong, get him back here immediately," Delaney told Van.
Van nodded and ran after Oliver. "Hey, wait up! Where are you going?"
"To the commissary, I want to grab something to eat before we head back. I didn't get to eat before we left, I might as well have something now. Is that all right with you, Mama Bear?"
"Hey, that isn't fair! I was trying to make absolutely certain you were okay. Lee would kill me if I didn't."
"Great, you can continue to make certain I'm okay while I eat some Jell-O," he told Van as they made their way through the line at the commissary.
They took seats across from one another at a table and began eating. There were several minutes of silence before Van spoke.
"Are you certain you feel all right?" he asked Oliver.
"Van, stop it. I'm perfectly benedectus."
Van froze with his fork midway to his mouth. "What did you say?"
Oliver sighed. "I said that I'm perfectly benedectus."
Very slowly, Van set his fork down. "I'm assuming that you are attempting to tell me that you're fine."
"Stop messing around, Van, of course, that's what I said."
"Um, no you told me you were perfectly benedectus."
"I did not," Oliver protested.
"You did. That's Ancient, it means well of health."
"I know what it means but I didn't say it!"
"You did," Van insisted. "I think we should go back to the infirmary."
"There is no reason for me to go back there! There is nothing cruvus!"
"Right, we are going to the infirmary." Van rose. "Let's go, Oliver, or I'll have the General get Lee here."
With a grumble, Oliver rose and followed Van back to the infirmary.
"Back so soon?" Delaney asked.
"He's randomly speaking Ancient without conscious thought about it."
Delaney frowned. "How is that possible?"
"I do speak Ancient," Oliver replied. "Fluently, I might add."
"Yes, you do, but you've never randomly used it to speak in normal conversation before!" Van insisted. "You're doing it without thought." He looked at Delaney. "He was attempting to tell me he was fine but instead he told me he was benedectus, which, loosely translated, means he's well."
"I think we should do an MRI," Delaney told him.
"I don't need an MRI, I am not sick!"
"Would you rather do it willingly, Dr. Kain, or should I fetch General Carter so she can make it an order?"
Oliver sent Van a glare. "This is your fault, couldn't leave well enough alone, could you?"
"You're my friend so no I can't. Just get checked out and if Dr. Grayon says you're fine then I'll shut up."
"Whatever, let's get this over with then."
"We'll be back in a bit."
Van took a seat. After a few minutes, he jumped up and began pacing. He wished Mal and Lee were here, he wasn't good with things like this. He wasn't an action sort of guy, he didn't handle situations like this well. He began humming Dr. Feelgood by Mötley Crüe, stopped, and shook his head. "Not a great choice." He decided that if General Carter wanted to split them up for smaller missions again he would protest it. He'd rather have Lee and Mal here.
"Dr. Walsh?"
He turned. "Yes?"
Delaney sighed. "It would appear we have a problem."
"A problem? What kind of problem?"
Delaney turned and pulled up the scan on a nearby computer. "This here on the left is the base scan of Dr. Kain's brain that I did when he joined SG-1 and here on the right is the scan I just did. His brain activity has increased quite a bit. You can see he's accessing almost all parts of his brain at once. Something similar happened to General O'Neill when he had the Ancient database downloaded into his brain."
"Wait, I remember that mission report. He built a device that allowed the Gate to draw enough power to dial the Asgard homeworld so they could remove the Ancient knowledge from his brain or he would have died." He felt a deep flood of panic burst forth. "The Asgard are gone! What are we going to do?"
"I don't have an answer to that. Oliver will reach a point where he will most likely no longer be able to communicate with us or understand us just as General O'Neill did," Delaney told him. "If he gets to that point he will most likely die. Our brains aren't advanced enough to handle all of the information the Ancients could."
"We need to find a way to remove all of that stuff from his brain before he dies!" Van screeched.
"Evander, I'm sorry but we simply can't remove it. Without the help of the Asgard, I'm afraid Dr. Kain won't survive. I'm going to go and speak with General Carter and fill her in on what's going on. In the meantime, I suggest you stick close to Dr. Kain because he's going to need someone with him who can speak Ancient."
Van nodded and scurried from the room. Now would be an excellent time for Mal and Lee to get back.
Sam stepped into the control room. "Who is it?"
"We're receiving Colonel Hughes' IDC."
"Open a channel." The Sergeant nodded to her. "Colonel Hughes, what's your status?"
"Everything here is looking good. Visna was happy to see us. His people have rebuilt after the visit the Alliance paid them and so far the killer squirrels have kept their distance."
"That's good to hear. If you've wrapped things up I suggest you return as soon as possible," Sam told him.
"Visna and his people have invited us to stay the night for a celebration to cement our friendship further."
"I'm afraid you'll have to forgo the party, Colonel, we need you here. There has been a recent development I'm sure you and Captain Kain will want to hear about."
"Ma'am?"
"Dr. Kain and Dr. Walsh encountered an Ancient device on P1N-305 and Dr. Kain has encountered some difficulties that Dr. Grayson is unable to remedy."
"What does that mean?" Lee asked. "Is my brother okay?"
"For the moment, yes," Sam replied
"For the moment, what in the hell is that supposed to mean?" Lee screeched.
"I suggest the two of you get back here so everything can be explained to you, SGC out."
"Fine," Lee grumbled. A second later Lee and Mal stepped from the Gate. They hurried from the Gate room up to the control room. "General?"
"Follow me." Sam strode from the room with Mal and Lee trailing her. "Oliver is currently with Evander in his office because he's lost the ability to communicate in anything but Ancient."
"This sounds familiar," Mal said.
"It should. A similar thing happened to Jack, General O'Neill. We believe the device Oliver encountered was an earlier version of an Ancient database. We aren't sure how it's linked to the laboratory yet since they were studying ascension. I'd like to send a couple of other men to the planet but they specifically requested Dr. Walsh be the one to study the laboratory." She stopped outside the door to Van's office. "Oliver can still understand but he can only speak Ancient. If things play out in the same way they did with Jack he will eventually lose all ability to understand us."
Lee hurried past her into the room, threw her arms around her brother, and hugged him tightly. "See what happens when I'm not here to take care of you!"
He shoved her away and tapped out a message on the tablet that sat in front of him and held it up for her to read.
"I can take care of myself perfectly fine, if you had been there you probably would have blown the place up," she read out loud. "Hey, that isn't fair!"
"You accidentally turn on the self-destruct in an Ancient outpost and no one ever lets you forget it!" Van told her cheerfully.
"You are not funny."
He shrugged and dipped his head toward Oliver. "We are currently attempting to figure out a way to remove the Ancient knowledge from your brother's brain. Without the Asgard to assist we're coming up empty on ideas."
Lee looked between them. "Why don't we ask the Furlings for help? I mean if we can even get in contact with them since they told us to piss off."
"That is an excellent idea. Why didn't we think of that? We can Gate back to the Furling planet where we met Tater Tot, maybe they'll send him to warn us off again!" Van ran for the door. "I need to talk to General Carter!" he shouted as he disappeared out the door.
"Great, let's hope she gives us permission to go back to the planet," Lee said.
Oliver carefully typed out another message and held the tablet up so she cole read it.
"If she doesn't I think we're out of options and I'm toasted."
She grinned at him. "And not happily toasted either."
He rolled his eyes and shook his head.
