Chapter Three

Jack pocketed his phone. "That was Hammond, we need to move."

"What, why?" Van asked.

"Maybourne is combing the area and someone told him they'd spotted us here. Which wouldn't have happened if someone hadn't gone outside," he replied and sent Lee a glare.

"What? We were out of ice!"

"Next time, stay inside. Come on people, let's move it."

Lee groaned and rolled off of the bed. "Is Maybourne ever going to give up?"

"Not as long as he's still breathing," Jack muttered. "He has the tenacity of a bloodhound."

"Can we go someplace five-star this time?" Oliver looked hopeful.

Jack grumbled, "This isn't a vacation."

Daniel raised his hand slightly to gain Jack's attention. "I know someplace we can go. It's about half an hour from here and I doubt Maybourne will think to look there."

Jack tossed him the keys. "Great, you drive."

"I call the position of the gun wielder," Teal'c said as they headed for the SUV.

"Shotgun, Teal'c, it's called shotgun," Jack told him. They piled into the vehicle, Van made certain to crawl into the back with Lee so she and Oliver weren't sitting together. "Okay, Daniel, get us out of here before Maybourne and his crew find us."

"Going." Daniel pulled out of the parking lot.

"Anyone want to fill the prisoners in on where we're going?" Lee called from the back.

"It's called The Cliff House," Daniel told her. "And you're not prisoners."

"She is," Jack told him. "It's her fault we have to move."

Oliver twisted around to look at Lee. "Thank you, I think I was getting some sort of bacterial infection from that place."

Jack slapped him upside the head. "You were not."

"No offense, Colonel, but are you a doctor?" Oliver eyed him.

"I'm not and neither are you, science boy."

"No, but at least I understand bacteria. I am a scientist."

"Don't argue with him, sir, it's a waste of time," Lee told him.

"And yet you do it anyway," Mal said. "Continuously."

Oliver began to list the types of bacteria he was certain had been occupying the motel room.

"If you don't shut up I swear I will throw you from this vehicle." Jack sent him a glare.

"And I will assist him in the effort," Teal'c added.

"Hey, that's not fair, I was simply attempting to educate everyone!"

"On a subject no one but you cares about." Lee gave his head a shove.

"Everyone be quiet!" Jack shouted.

The car's interior fell silent. Jack turned suddenly to glare at Lee. "Mock me again and you'll join your brother when I toss him from the car."

"I wasn't doing anything!" she protested.

"I'm sure you were," Mal told her.

She folded her arms over her chest and sank in her seat. "You're all very mean."

Everyone lapsed into silence for the rest of the drive. Daniel pulled from the road into the parking lot and Lee let out a small gasp.

"It's beautiful!"

"Are you sure about this, Daniel? I don't think the Air Force is going to spring for this place." Jack eyed the Victorian style mansion.

"I'll pay for it if it will make you feel better. I've always wanted to visit here. This seemed like a good excuse."

"Why on Earth would you want to stay here?" Jack asked.

Daniel made a small sound. "It's history, Jack. The Cliff House has been around for over a hundred years! It's survived a flood, fire, and sitting empty for sixteen years! Look at it, it's beautiful!"

Jack grumbled but didn't make any other comment.

"It's been around for that long?" Lee asked. "It looks Victorian but it also seems pretty new."

"It's gone through a lot of rounds of renovations over the years," Daniel told her.

"Can we get checked in so I can take a shower?" Oliver called out. "Or several showers."

Jack rolled his eyes and looked at Mal. "How in the hell do you manage to not kill any of them?"

Mal grinned. "I'm not sure." He dipped his head toward Daniel. "I could ask you the same thing."

Jack cleared his throat. "Yes, I suppose you could."

Daniel parked, disappeared inside and returned with room keys. "Here we go, follow me!"

Lee ran to catch up to him and fell into step beside him. "Is this place haunted?"

He shrugged. "It's said to be."

"Cool."

He chuckled. "You don't strike me as the ghost hunting type."

"Hey, you never know what's out there. I mean look at us, we step through a wormhole and end up across the galaxy. I think it's safe to say the existence of spirits is plausible."

"Yes, it is." He grinned at her.

"Ghosts do not exist." Jack shook his head and dropped back to walk beside Mal. "Where do you stand on this ghost thing?"

Mal shrugged. "Anything is possible I suppose but I'm not holding my breath."

Jack chuckled.

Lee turned to walk backward. "At least I don't have to go outside for ice!"

"You don't go anywhere for ice. If you leave the room, someone could see you."

She pointed at Jack. "The same goes for you, sir."

"I find myself grumbling a lot more since you arrived," Jack replied.

Mal chuckled. "I do a lot more grumbling and muttering to myself that I ever did before this job."

Daniel led the way to their rooms and everyone got settled in.

Lee sighed. "Being the only woman kinda sucks. Why can't I have my own room? I have spent most of my life stuck with Oliver, I do not want to share a room with him."

Oliver snorted. "You'll share because no one trusts you on your own. You'd probably empty the minibar."

"You know, I take serious offense to you painting me like a thief, Ollie. I am an upstanding citizen and a member of the United States Air Force."

Mal dropped into a chair. "How is it you have such a sparkling record when you never listen to me?"

"I listen, I don't always follow orders." She sighed and sat across from him at the small table set near the window of the room. "I've never remained anywhere very long. My entire being has been focused on moving up in rank. If there was an opportunity I took it, consequently I never really settled into anyplace."

"And never got to know your commanding officers enough to annoy them?"

She laughed. "Yup, that about covers it. Besides, you came in here with your whole, if I give an order you must follow it speech. I felt the need to get you to loosen up."

Oliver passed them on his way to the bathroom. "Don't listen to her, she's always been the push the limits type."

"Yes, but I've always prided myself on knowing when to push the envelope and when to let it remain where it's supposed to be."

Mal smiled. "You've succeeded in getting me to loosen up, at least a little, but I'm still your commanding officer."

"I know that, Colonel. When it comes down to it, I'm not going to completely ignore you, I do listen."

"But you don't always follow."

"No, I don't." She shrugged.

He chuckled and shook his head.

Daniel stuck his head into the room. "Sam called, the solar flare happened precisely when the note said it would, so we're a go for the one tomorrow."

"Provided we can get back to the Stargate without running into Maybourne," Mal replied.

"Yes, providing that. Get some rest, we'll come up with a plan to get you back to the Gate." He stepped back and shut the door.

Mal stood and stretched. "I guess I'll go and see what Van is doing in our room."

"My guess would be attempting to figure out how to ghost proof the room." Lee grinned.

He laughed. "Probably a good guess. Night."

"Night, Colonel." Lee turned down the covers on the bed. This whole time travel thing was plain weird. Here they were existing in a time and place where she and her brother were currently three-years-old. It was strange to think the version of her that existed in this time was nothing but a toddler, especially when she looked into the mirror and saw a grown woman. She shook her head. "Time travel gives me a migraine." If she didn't think it would screw things up royally, she'd go and find Mal's father and drag him to the doctor. He deserved to have his father around. "No, what he deserves is not getting stuck with Elias for a brother," she muttered. As badly as she wanted to fix things for him, she couldn't. Both Van and Oliver had given her a seriously long speech on not changing things because of the butterfly effect or some such nonsense. She had paid very little attention. She understood why they couldn't change things, she'd seen Back to the Future, she wasn't a complete idiot. Knowing the whys didn't make it suck any less.
