Chapter One

Lee made an exasperated sound. "Ollie, where are you going?"

He didn't look up from the device in his hand. "I'm picking up a weird energy signature off to the east. I want to check it out."

Lee looked at Mal. "Want me to go with him?"

"Nah, let him check it out. The planet is uninhabited. I'm sure he'll be fine." He turned with a sigh. "It seems that Van has wandered off. Guess I better figure out where he's gone and make certain he's okay, unlike your brother, Van can't quite kick anyone's ass yet."

Lee watched her brother as he wandered away. "Yeah, but sir last time he went off on his own the Alliance brainwashed him."

"He'll be fine, Kain. Oliver established that there is no one on the planet or in orbit."

She grumbled. "Right, with his fancy upgrades to his multi-sensor."

"Stop worrying that every time he's out of your sight something bad is going to happen."

"Brainwashed, Ancient database downloaded into his brain, need I say more, sir?"

Mal rolled his eyes. "Do you want me to go into every time you got into trouble, even with someone watching you?"

"Uh, no."

"Good. Stay here and keep an eye on the Gate, radio if you see any sign of trouble."

"Yes, sir."

Mal moved off to find Van.

Oliver stopped and turned a slow circle. He frowned at the display. The energy signature was off to the west now as if it had moved. As he stared at the display it drifted back in his direction a bit. "Weird." The energy signature stopped moving. He moved through a small stand of trees and came to a sudden stop. "Whoa." He stared at a small cloud that hung in the air several feet in front of him. It was the size of a balloon hovering six feet above the ground. It was emitting a low buzzing sound and pulsing with bolts of electricity within its little cloud-like body. In a heap on the ground nearby was some sort of animal. It didn't appear as if the beast was alive and he wondered if the electric cloud had been about to have a snack.

He took a quick step back when it moved closer to him. "Right, hey there. I'm not going to hurt you, I'm just an explorer."

The bolts of energy increased in intensity.

"Whoa, hey, come on we're all good. There's no need to get ... well whatever you're getting." Slowly he reached for the button on his radio to call the others. Before his hand could get close to the radio the little cloud rushed forward and enveloped him. He swatted at it but there was no way to beat it off. It wasn't solid and he couldn't get any purchase. He gave up trying to dislodge the creature and reached for his radio again, he took a breath and the cloud rushed into his mouth.

For a moment he remained perfectly still staring blankly at the trees, then he blinked, shook his head, turned, and headed back to the Gate.

"Did you find your weird energy thing?" Lee asked him as he approached the Gate.

"Nope, nothing. I guess it was just some anomaly." He shrugged.

"Colonel, Oliver is back. Negative on the energy signature he was tracking. If you and Van are done we can go."

"Copy that, we're already on our way back. Van had a little accident, we're going to have to have a medical team in the Gate room."

"Is he all right?"

"He's fine, just fell into a stream."

"A very cold stream," Van added.

"We should be there in a few minutes," Mal told her.

"Copy that, sir." She grinned at Oliver. "Guess you win this round, you didn't find anything but at least you didn't fall into a stream."

"Uh, right."

Lee arched a brow at him. "You okay?"

"Yeah, fine."

"I thought you'd be all over Van for falling in the water. Especially after he got on you for falling out of that tree on the mission to P9T-061 when you were looking for whatever nerd thing you were searching for."

"Maybe I'm the bigger man," Oliver answered.

"Right, says the guy who laughed his ass off when Marget Williams poured glue in my hair in the third grade."

"Hey, it was the third grade. I'm not a kid anymore."

She snorted. "Here comes the Colonel and Van, dial the Gate."

"Why me?"

"Because I'm older and I said so."

Oliver grunted and began dialing the Gate, by the time it connected Mal and Van had made it to where Lee stood.

"Aww, you look like a drowned puppy," she told Van.

"Not ffffunny," he told her while shivering.

"Let's go before you turn into an ice cube." She took his arm and helped him through the Gate.

Dr. Grayson and his team were waiting when they came through the Gate. "Let's get you to the infirmary and get you warm," Delaney told Van.

"Warm would be awesome right now," Van answered.

Mal sighed. "Well, that trip was a bust. There was nothing worth writing home about."

"Or traveling halfway across the galaxy for," Lee added.

"Let's go see the General and let her know we found a great big load of nada."

Lee found Oliver sitting in the commissary. "Hey, that is a lot of food." She gestured to the tray that sat in front of him on the table.

Oliver stared down at the tray in silence for several minutes before he shook his head. "For some reason, I'm really hungry. I woke up and was starving."

She laughed and took a seat across the table. "You did crawl into bed in one of the VIP rooms and crash hard. I guess you were so disappointed about not finding your energy signature thing on P3Y-621 yesterday you needed a nap."

His head snapped up and he frowned at her. "What are you talking about? We never went to P3Y-621."

"Yes, we did. You wandered off in search of some weird energy signature but when you came back to the Gate you said you didn't find anything."

"No, that didn't happen. The mission was ..." He stopped speaking, frowned, and stared down at the tray of food. "The mission was ..." He looked at her. "Why can't I remember anything from yesterday?"

"Van fell into the stream, remember?"

"No, I don't!" he shrieked. "I can't remember anything!"

"Right, I think we need to get you to the infirmary. Let's go."

"I don't want to go to the infirmary."

"Ollie, something is wrong. You lost an entire day, you don't think that warrants a check-up?"

"I ... I don't ..." His eyes rolled back and he slumped forward.

Lee winched. "Right into the mashed potatoes." She turned and went to where a phone was mounted on the wall and dialed the infirmary. "Dr. Grayson, I need you in the commissary, Oliver passed out. Yes. No, we were talking and he can't remember anything that happened yesterday. Thank you." She hung up and went back to her brother. Very carefully, she extracted him from his mashed potatoes, cleaned his face, and waited for the doctor to arrive.

"His pulse is steady but he hasn't regained consciousness," Lee told Delaney when he made it to the commissary.

"Let's get him on the stretcher and get him to the infirmary," he told the medical team.

Lee moved back out of the way and watched as they placed her brother on the stretcher and left with him. She released a sigh and went to find the Colonel and Van. She stuck her head into the gym. "Hey, Van?" She watched as he bobbed to one side and then executed a quick jab that hit home. Ogden's head snapped back and she emitted a startled cry.

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry!" Van exclaimed.

Halley prodded her nose with a grin. "Don't apologize, you executed that jab perfectly. It's boxing, Evander, you're supposed to hit your opponent."

"I guess, I still feel bad though."

She gave him a playful punch in the shoulder. "Don't, I'm fine."

"All right." He seemed to suddenly remember that Lee was standing in the doorway. "Sorry, what's up?"

"Sorry to interrupt but Oliver collapsed, they're taking him to the infirmary."

"Collapsed? Why?"

"I suppose that is something the doctor will figure out."

He pulled off his gloves. "Halley, sorry, can we finish later?"

"Of course." She looked at Lee. "I hope your brother is all right."

"Thank you." Lee waited for Van and they hurried off. "Do you know where the Colonel is?"

"No, but he said something yesterday when we got back about going home for a bit. He still has bullet holes to spackle."

She giggled. "His poor house, I almost feel bad about suggesting we take John there."

"Better his place than my apartment," Van answered.

"True." She pulled out her phone and sent Mal a quick text to let him know what was happening.

"Do you think Oliver will be all right?"

She shrugged as she shoved her phone back into her pocket. "I have no idea. I don't even know what's wrong with him."

"What happened?" Van asked.

"We were in the commissary talking and he couldn't remember anything that happened yesterday. He became upset about not being able to remember, so I suggested we go to the infirmary to get him checked out and he became more upset. He protested a trip to the infirmary then his eyes rolled back and he fell face-first into his mashed potatoes."

"That's weird."

"Yup, even for this job."
