Starkit
I woke up stretching and looked around the nursery. I was five moons old and I couldn't wait to be a warrior.
Sandstorm was gone, most probably to the dirt place, and I decided to explore the camp while I could.
Brownkit was still asleep and I didn't want to wake him. He was only two moons old and hadn't grown in confidence yet. He'd stick close to me or his mum Sunlight and was very nervous.
I tiptoed past Sunlight and Brownkit as I went towards the entrance of the nursery.
There was a sound of yawning and I looked back and saw Sunlight moving but thankfully only wrapped her tail around Brownkit.
I looked out and heard yowling and saw Sandstorm arguing with Skystar in the middle of the camp.
"But I don't want her! She's not right!" She hissed.
The other cats had stopped what they were doing and was watching what was happening.
"She's my choice, Sandstorm, and I know you only want what's best, but I'm leader, just because you were mates and helped Firestar when he was leader doesn't mean-" Skystar said calmly to my mum.
"You leave him out of this! He at least listened to us when we told him our choices and-" Sandstorm snarled angrily lashing her tail.
"And maybe if she was Firestar's heir I would choose my deputy, but she's not." Skystar said grabbing a robin and walking back to his den.
Sandstorm stormed back to the den.
"Mum?" I asked timidly.
"Inside Starkit." Sandstorm said crossly.
I went back inside and sat down and didn't complain when mum began to wash my fur, it always seemed to calm her down.
"What's the matter Sandstorm?" Sunlight asked blinking her green eyes.
"It doesn't matter, I'm sorry for waking you up Sunlight." Sandstorm said.
"It does matter, you don't normally come in here angry like that, and I was getting up anyway." Sunlight said looking concerned.
"Skystar won't change his mind. He wants someone completely different to who I want. He even brought up Firestar." Sandstorm sighed.
"He knows you mated with a different Tom?" Sunlight asked obviously referring to Firestar.
"I told him the day I knew I was having Starkit, you should of seen his expression, he was so sad. He thought he'd lost me, that he didn't care for me as much as he should of. Took him ages to convince him that he did."
"Who is Starkit's father? If you don't mind me asking?" Sunlight asked.
I listened intently, it would be my first time hearing who my father was.
"Darkstorm. The second only kit he had." Sandstorm said.
"How long before he was killed?"
"The same day."
There was silence as the two cats remembered him.
"Starkit, can you get some fresh kill for me?" Sandstorm asked me.
"Sure" I got up and went out into the camp. The cats were mingling normally and were sharing tongues together and all signs of conflict just a few minutes ago seemed to of disappeared.
I was on my way to the fresh kill when I noticed Dapplefur was struggling to drag a juicy vole to the place she wanted it.
"Dapplefur, do you need any help?" I asked padding over.
"Yes please Starkit," Dapplefur smiled.
"Where do you want it?"
"Just by the Apple tree there." Dapplefur answered.
I helped her drag it over and made sure she was ok when she sat down out of breath.
"I should be going to the Elder's den soon." Dapplefur chuckled.
"You do look tired." I said.
"I feel it."
She began to wash her blue and gray pelt and looked at me with smokey gray eyes. "What you doing out the nursery anyway?"
"Getting some fresh kill for Sandstorm." I replied.
"Better get on with your task, I don't want to keep you for too long." Dapplefur told me.
"Are you sure your ok now?" I asked.
"I'm sure, now go." Dapplefur told me sternly.
I grabbed a couple mice and headed back to the nursery. Sandstorm asked me why I took so long but the rest of the day was normal and boring.
