Apprentice Duties
Getting up I walked to the fresh kill pile and pulled out an thrush and absent mindedly ate it while thinking about the dream I had.
"You've seen it. Now stop it" that black Tom had said.
How? And when was it going to happen? Soon I had a feeling.
"Prey for your thoughts?" A voice said behind me.
Startled I looked behind me and smiled. "Yes Firepaw."
"Smallscar says you can see Dapplefur now if you want." Firepaw said.
"Brilliant. Thank you Firepaw." I padded quickly over towards the medicine den.
"What about your thrush?" Firepaw called to me.
"Have it, I don't want it." I called back.
Padding away with my head in the clouds I didn't realize that there was another cat in front of me queued for Smallscar.
"Watch it!" I heard a hiss as I bumped into a cat.
"Sorry Whitefrost." I apologized to him.
"What are you doing in a rush anyway? Your not ill." Whitefrost asked angrily.
"I came to see Dapplefur." I said more quietly.
"Well go see her later, Smallscar is busy right now." Whitefrost told me.
I looked down and nodded and went to walk away.
"Starpaw, wait. Whitefrost, don't tell an apprentice off for wanting to make sure their mentor is ok." Smallscar scolded Whitefrost.
"Sorry Smallscar." Whitefrost apologised.
Smallscar smiled and flicked her tail for us to follow.
"Dapplefur is at the back there." She pointed and went a different way with Whitefrost.
I spotted Dapplefur at the back and sat next to her. She was asleep but the flickers of pain on her face showed how much the magnitude of scars were ailing her badly.
"Isn't there anything you can give her for the pain? She looks in agony." I asked Smallscar when she came behind me after looking at Whitefrost.
"I can't give her any poppy seeds because she's asleep." Smallscar said. "However I could give her some more Goldenrod, hold on a sec."
A few minutes later Smallscar came back. "I seem to be very low on Goldenrod, I was ment to go and get some more when I went to meet the other medicine cats tomorrow night but I need some more now."
"Can I go and get some for you?" I piped up. I had nothing to do and I wanted to help Dapplefur get better.
"Do you know what it looks like?" Smallscar asked me.
I shook my head. "I haven't been out in the territory before either." I admitted.
"Ok, Goldenrod looks like a tall plant with yellow flowers coming up in spikes around the plant. It also has pointy leaves." Smallscar explained. "If your going out without much experience, choose a cat that's not busy to accompany you to protect you."
I nodded and walked out of the den. Who to choose?
"How's Dapplefur?" Firepaw asked me when I got back to him.
"She's asleep right now and she's still in a lot of pain. Smallscar's running out of Goldenrod so she's asked me to get an cat to accompany me that's not too busy." I told him.
"How about I go? I know the territory and of course, know how to fight. Whitefrost won't mind, he's recovering from that large scar he's got." Firepaw explained.
"That old scratch," I snorted. "Alright then. You better tell Whitefrost then."
Firepaw bounded off his black paws contrasting with his orange fur.
"Alright he says make sure to bring lots of herbs back with us" Firepaw said when he came back.
"Great! let's go" I grinned and followed the worn down tracks of the snow by the entrance.
Firepaw lead me out into the heart of the territory. "I, wanted to show you something before we get the herbs."
"Alright then...." I frowned but followed him.
"I found this when I first became an apprentice but haven't told or shown this to anyone."
I gasped at this site. There was a little puddle at the moment but underneath was different coloured rocks, they shimmered in the water and changed it from its normal colour. "It's beautiful." I said looking closer.
Bending down I accidently fell in and there was a flash of white
I gasped and swam out and shook the cold water from my fur.
looking around I found myself in a totally different place. Not the mountains that the Tribe of the Running Water lived in, though the mountains where they lived was in the background but in a large clearing. Large tall grass stopped me from seeing much but when I found a rock I saw how breathtakingly huge it was, and beautiful. I got a sense of calmness about it and I wished I was actually there.
"You've got to bring the Clans here." A voice said. it was the black Tom again.
"What do you mean?" I asked him.
"You've got to bring the Clans here." The tom said again.
"Who are you? Why are you telling me? How am I going to be able to do this?" I asked him.
"My name is Swirlstar, and I'm from Starclan, I am telling you as it is your duty to the Clans to do this.
A shining kitty star points and guides the way,
Snow wing will fall together protecting,
A new life will be foretold if they complete their destiny,
But death will follow if they don't." The Tom rumbled to me loudly and everything faded away.
"Starpaw! Starpaw! Starpaw!" I heard shouting as my hearing came back.
"Firepaw?" I asked confused laying on the floor.
"Stay still, Smallscar's coming." He said worriedly to me.
"W...why?" I frowned heaving myself up into a sitting position.
"Don't you remember? You went to look at the water but fell in, you didn't swim or anything and I had to fish you out, I thought you were dead at one point." Firepaw said.
Of course, everything came rushing back to me, The tom, Swirlstar, the prophecy, wait... the prophecy. Why had he chosen me?
As I stared blankly as I remembered what had gone on, Firepaw nuzzled my neck, making sure I was ok.
"Smallscar!" Firepaw said scrambling up. "Is she ok?"
Smallscar looked at me. "Yes she's fine. But she'll stay with me for a while to make sure." Smiling she lead me back to camp. Cats in the camp whispered and looked at me but I didn't hear. I was too busy trying to understand the prophecy that Swirlstar had gave me.
"What is it Starpaw?" Smallscar said as soon as we were in her den with Skystar. "I know that place well, I sometimes speak to Starclan there when many cats are ill instead of going to the Moonstone.
"I met a Tom. His name was Swirlstar and he gave me a prophecy." I told them.
Skystar and Smallscar looked at each other for a second.
"What was it?" They asked at the same time.
I felt uneasy telling them it, but I didn't know why so I closed my eyes and recited the prophecy from memory. "A shining kitty star points the way, Snow wing will fall protecting, A new life will be foretold if they complete their destiny, but death will follow if they don't."
Skystar got up and paced around. "Kittystar? Snowwing? I've never heard of those cats before? They must be from a different clan. They must be Riverclan, Leopardstar said there would be a new change." Skystar suddenly froze. Willing round to face Smallscar. "They're going to attack us soon! We shall see about that!" Skystar hissed and stalked out her den.
Me and Smallscar looked at each other in bewilderment.
"Come on out, I shall call the clan together and launch an attack patrol on those Riverclan cats." Skystar said with her head in the den.
"Wait, Skystar! Think about this!" Smallscar got up quickly and padded to Skystar.
I followed quickly behind wanting to hear what Smallscar had to say.
"Riverclan hasn't given us any clear signs that they want to battle us. For all we know, it could be Shadow or Windclan. At least wait till we get a clear sign that it's them." Smallscar said quickly.
Skystar looked at Smallscar for a few heart beats, then sighed looking down. "Your right, what was I thinking? I don't want an unnecessary battle on our clan."
Smallscar bowed her head. "You wanted to protect our clan, a noble act of leadership, but was a tad rash."
Skystar nodded. "Starpaw, let me know if you dream of anything again."
I nodded and left with Smallscar.
"You probably won't, just a one-time thing because of going in that pool." Smallscar tried to reassure me.
"I've had a dream before the, pool incident." I told her.
Smallscar's eyes grew wide for a second and then determined.
"You need to tell me this as soon as you can. Come, let's talk in my den, where no cat can disturb us."
"Smallscar!" A demanding voice yelled across the camp.
"Change of plan, go to my den and stay there. Be with Dapplefur if you want, just stay there till I get back." Smallscar instructed.
I nodded and made my way quickly to Smallscar's den. I tried to make my way unnoticed but it failed because a cat came and stopped to talk with me.
"Starpaw, what were you doing in Skystar's den?" Firepaw asked worriedly.
"Nothing to worry about, with Dapplefur injured for the foreseeable future, I need a new mentor, Smallscar and Skystar were talking about my new mentor." I shrugged and then looked worriedly towards Smallscar's den.
Firepaw looked at me with sympathy. "And that's where your going now. I'll see you later. Whitefrost wants me to hunting for the clan. No rest for the poor apprentice." Firepaw groaned.
"See you later then." I smiled laughing. "Make sure you get a rabbit!" I teased and walked into the Medicine den.
Whitefrost was still in the den when I came in but he looked like he was asleep so I left him alone.
Dapplefur was wheezing quite badly but was awake which was a improvement from the last time I'd seen her.
"Star.... Starpaw. I hear.... you tried to meet..... Starclan... today." Dapplefur struggled to speak as she smiled at me.
I lay down beside her. "Yeah, terns out that accidentally falling into a Medicine Cat's pool isn't such a good idea." I chuckled and began to wash one of her legs that was a bit dirty.
Dappledfur moved the leg however and placed it over one of my front paws. "Starpaw....you have been.........The best..... cat I've ever......... had the..... privilege of training and.... knowing....... continue your path.... and make me...... proud." Dapplepaw finished and laid her head on the nest again.
"Dapplefur?" I said worriedly.
Dapplefur breathed out and her paw on mine slacked.
"Dapplefur!" I said with more concern getting up.
I shook her put she didn't move or breathed and with a cry I realised that my mentor was dead.
"Dapplefur! No! You can't leave me!" I cried and buried my head in her neck smelling her comforting scent.
"Mom?" I heard a hesitant voice then sobbing and Whitefrost's scent filled my nose as well.
We both mourned until Smallscar and Prettyleaf came back and announced to the Clan that Dappledfur was dead.
Firepelt and Prettyleaf carefully placed Dappledfur in the center of the Clan and we all bowed our heads while Skystar spoke.
"Dapplefur was a brilliant cat who was nearing her last moon in being a warrior and joining the elders of the clan. She was one of the oldest and had many kits, Whitefrost, Oneleg, Prettyleaf and Firepelt. We will now hold a vigil for her tonight as the sun sets and we shall bury her tomorrow at Sunhigh, any cat who was close to her in any way may share tongues to her one last time. May Starclan light her way." Skystar finished and bounded down to say goodbye closely followed by Firepelt and other cats.
I let the other cats say goodbye and when they'd gone me Skystar, Smallscar and Dappledfur's kits shared tongues.
When the sun bad set Smallscar went back to her den and Skystar when to hers. I stayed the whole night though.
When the Moon was lowering its self down the adults began speaking of where Dapplefur would be buried.
I politely aloud her kin to chose where she was to lay last and helped bury her.
Smallscar waited for me to return to the camp and gave us some fresh kill and then a couple poppy seeds and took me to her den where I sank into a slumber.
