Jimin
It was time.
After weeks of preparation, Jimin was about to go to Bannoc-IV to locate the Legacy. Shinya Voss had decrypted the transponder and found the exact spot the Legacy was in. Initial reports showed it had stayed intact, but the systems were offline. All except emergency power, which couldn't fly the ship, but it meant it had enough power to transfer credits from the GalBank vault to his pocket.
Shinya, Del, Hoseok, Jazz, and Jimin were in Del's office while Y/n prepared the ship and inspected the gear the Fleet had installed. Shinya hunched over the holographic table that had an image of the Legacy's statistics and core components. Jimin had studied a makeshift map of the ship that gave him a rough idea of where to go so he wouldn't be running blind; however, unlike Hoseok, he didn't have a photographic memory.
"Here," Del said as he placed a thick, rectangular data core in front of Jimin. "Take that and plug it into the vault control center, that will transfer all the credits into the account. Once you get inside, you'll need to find a keycard that'll grant you access to the vault. Look for a dead security guard, all of them should have access to it."
"Any security I should worry about?"
"Yes," Shinya said as he zoomed in on the Legacy's stats. "It says here they had both robots and a security team guarding the Legacy. To reach the vault, you may have to restart some of the emergency power. That means those security robots will activate and fire when they see you."
"So I should wear my suit."
Shinya rolled his eyes. "Obviously."
"Don't give me attitude, Del told me you like me, no point pretending you don't."
Shinya slowly turned to glare at Del. "You told him?!"
Del grinned. "Anyway. Jimin, once you dock with the Legacy, you should go in hauling whatever weapons you got. Expect heavy resistance from those bots. GalBank uses the best of the best, so if you can avoid them completely, that may be for the best. They aren't simple VAS units, they're military-grade tanks. Those bitches were used in the Colony War."
Well, Jimin's powers would come in handy.
"Got it. I should get going, then. I'll see you on the other side, Del."
"Hey, what about me?" Hoseok asked with an offended scowl.
Jimin winked. "I'll see you in my dreams, pretty boy."
Without another word, he walked off and went to his ship, which now had the ComSpike and Conduction Grid attached. Y/n was in the cockpit running final tests when he approached.
"Everything looks good, even the Grid. I think we got this. You want to send a message to our friends?" she asked, strapping into her seat.
He did the same. "Yeah, I'll record and send now."
That was what he did. Y/n plugged in the coordinates and undocked from the Key while Jimin sent his message to Yoongi. It was in code on the off chance the pirates had installed any hidden mics or cameras to discover if he was a traitor. He spoke like he was speaking to Constellation instead of the UC, and when he was done, he sent the message and prepared to go to Bannoc-IV.
"Coordinates loaded and I have a read on the Legacy's location. We'll jump only five hundred meters away from the Legacy. Are you ready?" Y/n asked, and her voice was calming. Though she wasn't stroking his hair or letting him drool on her chest like she did when they slept together, her words were just as calming as those events. So, he nodded.
"Ready."
Y/n flipped several switches, and soon enough, space began to melt in front of his very eyes as the light and color of the grav drive embraced him. The ship rattled and shouted out until the jump commenced. Jimin shut his eyes and bit his tongue, his hands squeezing the arm rests and his legs pressed against the co-pilot's seat. The rattle stopped shortly after it began, but it was replaced by occasional rumbles that shook the entire body of his precious ship.
"Jimin, we made it. In one piece."
Jimin snapped his eyes open and saw a field of a murky orangish-red color. The foggy field was so thick he couldn't see any stars. Lightning strikes that made no sounds due to the vacuum of space struck the hull, and the Conduction Grid absorbed each bolt to convert it into energy. Still, the intensity of the EM field harmed their shields. They had plenty of time to get out before the shields broke, but not forever. Jimin had to be fast.
Y/n flew them through the field. There was no debris like asteroids or destroyed ships, which was a good sign. The Legacy was up ahead. Though Jimin couldn't see it, the radar pinged and displayed how close they were. 500 meters, just as Y/n had said.
Jimin gazed at the flashing orange and red light that awaited him in the void of space. The fog of the EM field dominated everything, including Bannoc-IV. Jimin had no visual of it. Considering it was a Gas Giant the size of a sun, not being able to see it was concerning to say the least. The most he could see were the milky white rings that stretched out wider than anything Jimin had seen.
"It's up here. Good news: it's a small ship. Bad news: we don't have much time, even for small ships," Y/n said as she groaned. The strain of holding his ship steady had to wear on her, and he didn't envy her position. Flying through a dangerous EM field didn't appeal to him. Granted, flying in general didn't appeal to him, but still.
"I'll be fast, I promise."
That was the truth. It was a miracle they had survived the jump, but if he dilly dallied while on the Legacy, his ship could tear apart. Or worse: the Legacy could tear apart.
While he was on it.
Jimin brushed the thought off and waited for Y/n to locate the Legacy. It was small to the point where it wasn't much larger than Jimin's ship. As she docked, the rumbling dissipated and the lightning strikes weren't as intense. It was as if the Legacy was their new shield, taking all the hits so Jimin's still unnamed ship could live. He'd have to make a name for it at some point.
Y/n got up and helped Jimin to the back. He geared up, and she handed him his helmet. However, before he could take it, he hesitated and observed her. Her hands shuddered around the helmet, but it was almost unnoticeable. As if she was attempting to hide it. She never met his eyes or uttered words of encouragement. Her lower lip quivered like it'd break if she opened it.
He took the helmet and dropped it on the ground. That caused her to whip her head up. Their gazes locked on one another, and she averted hers when the contact was made.
"Look at me," he whispered, but she didn't agree. He skimmed his index finger by her chin and guided her head up so they could lock eyes once more. He pressed his forehead against hers and let out a soft breath. "I'm coming back. You know that. You know I'll make it."
A sniffle left her nose. "I know."
He rubbed his hand against her cheek and refused to look at anything other than her.
"Stay here and get ready for takeoff. Monitor the systems. If anything changes, tell me and I'll come back right away, okay?"
"Okay," she muttered with a crack in her tone.
She was a Universal, and the truth was, he didn't know her boundaries. He didn't want to risk disrespecting her or her religion, but then again, they had shared a bed multiple times by that point. He wanted nothing more than to kiss her, hug her, and tell her he'd be back, but the more he stalled, the longer it'd take to return.
So, he settled for a middle ground. He kissed her forehead and held himself there for a greedy second. When he parted from her skin, much to his amazement, there was no shock on her face.
"When you get back," she said, softly, "you better give me the real thing."
His eyes bulged, but before he could process her words, she opened the hatch and motioned for him to go. He wasn't sure if he was more distracted or less. Still, for her sake, he picked up the helmet, put it on, grabbed his AA-99, and entered the Legacy. Jimin stole one last glance at her, and she gave him a gentle smile as the door shut.
He had to make it through. He had to make it back. If he did, he owed her a proper kiss.
With that in mind, Jimin stepped forward and observed the Legacy. Sparks flew from the ceiling, and the entire tight corridor was covered in a creamy red emergency light. The actual lights were gone, and there was a deactivated robot slumped against the wall. It had the same base model as a VAS unit, only it was far bulkier and equipped with machine guns on both its arms. It also had a flat, circular head as opposed to a boxy one. VASCO had eyes while these military-grade robots didn't. It made them appear more like hunting machines than cuddly companions.
Jimin made a mental note to avoid them. Then, he continued his trek through the Legacy at a controlled pace. Not too fast, not too slow. He took the time to peek around the hallways and realized they were all the same: gray walls with deactivated robots and broken lights. Some wall panels were torn out, but he spotted no dead security guards or any sign of human life.
The map replayed itself in Jimin's mind, and he recalled he needed to turn down five hallways to reach the entrance to the vault. That was what he did. When he stepped inside the new room that wasn't a cramped hallway, the first thing that stood out was the white light. It contrasted the rest of the transport, but he knew it wasn't a sign of life. It just meant GalBank valued their vault more than anything else.
Jimin noticed the new room was square and had a high ceiling. There were no robots, but there were two dead security guards and two empty bottles of beer. Jimin stepped up and searched the guards. They wore Freestar armor, and Jimin hated searching his own faction; however, it paid off seeing as he snatched the keycard he needed to enter the vault.
The vault door was massive and took up half of the wall. It was a thick metal door that shined in the brightness. The vault controls were dead ahead, and Jimin pressed the keycard against the scanner. The door hissed, and steam blew out of the hinges. It creaked and creaked. Then, Jimin yelped and jumped out of the way. The door cracked and fell forward, landing with a 'thud' on the ground. If Jimin hadn't moved, he would've been crushed to death.
He pressed on his long-distance comm. "Checking in. I got to the vault and opened it. Did it almost crush me? Yeah, maybe. Am I alive? Also yeah. The robots are all deactivated. I'm almost there, Y/n."
"Good," her voice said. It was filled with static thanks to the harsh conditions of their environment. "Keep me updated. If you don't check in every five minutes, I'm coming after you."
"Yes ma'am."
He shut off the comm and went inside the vault. However, it wasn't that simple. The "vault" was actually an entrance to the rest of the ship. He still had to journey through the reactor and engine room, then he'd make it to the actual vault. And in that vault, he had to go up two flights of steps and find the transfer room that overlooked all the data cores that stored the credits.
Jimin quickened his pace and ventured into the next area, which was an intersection between the reactor and the security room. Obviously, he chose to enter the reactor. But there was one issue: the robots were on.
Jimin panicked and jumped into cover just as the two robots scanned and made clicking sounds. With a deep breath, Jimin thought of the Void Form symbol. Once his hand sparked up, he closed it, and invisibility blessed his figure. He snuck his way through the reactor and noticed it was in critical condition. It was the main power source, hence why the robots were only on in that sector. If anything happened to it, it'd cause the ship to explode. No pressure or anything.
The two robots turned their heads toward him, and Jimin stiffened. That was when Jimin made the wonderful realization that he was actually the dumbest person in human history.
They had scanners. Invisible or not, they could detect his bodily functions.
"Intruder alert," one of the robots said in a monotone voice.
It raised its machine gun at him, and in the blink of an eye, Jimin thought of the particle beam. The stream of light fired out and melted through the first robot and burned the arm of the second. The second hopped back and made a 'clunk' sound with its hefty legs. Jimin popped out of invisibility and sprinted to the other end of the space.
The reactor room was cramped with a low ceiling and cyan lighting that emitted from the reactor. It was a massive horizontal cylinder jutting out of the wall with protective black beams around it. The door to the next section was in the corner, so Jimin jumped through it and shut it behind him. He was already dizzy from using two powers back-to-back. He groaned and rubbed his head before taking out his AA-99 and crouching.
Jimin waited and waited... then, the robot pounded through the entrance, and Jimin shot it down before it could so much as raise its minigun. The explosive rounds tore through the armor of the beast, and it went crashing down while saying, "Error." The robot died in front of Jimin. That was one less threat to worry about.
But holy shit. So much for a silencer, those bullets were loud as fuck. What was the point of even having one? It muffled the sound by maybe two percent at best. Why did people use those things?
Jimin shook it off and got up to go to the next area. The engine room came into his view, and there were ten sleeping robots. Jimin gulped. The engine room was gigantic and had two floors separated by a metal staircase. The gray walls were coated in emergency light, and the robots were alive but powered down. Unlike the ones in the hallways, these robots stood on their two feet with their heads slumped. Their power lights were on orange, which meant standby, if Jimin remembered correctly. If he got too close, they'd activate.
With a huff, Jimin hugged the corners and shimmied his way to the other side of the vicinity. His long-distance comm clicked as if Y/n was attempting to communicate with him, but he forced it off as to not alert the robots. He watched and waited to see if they would activate, but they didn't. A dry breath left his tongue, and he finished his journey. He made it to the door to the vault and slipped inside.
That gave him the chance to turn on his comm. "Y/n, I'm fine, just got in a tough spot for a moment there. I'm in the vault now. I'll keep you updated."
"Got it. Sorry, I just..."
"No, it's okay. I'd be doing the same if the roles were reversed," Jimin said with a chuckle. "Don't worry about me too much, princess. I don't want you to get any frown lines."
"Hey! I-"
Jimin shut the comm off before she could continue. It was adorable how flustered and defensive she could get. With her cute voice in mind, he walked through the vault. It was the darkest part of the Legacy. It should have fascinated him to be surrounded by so many credits, but he was indifferent toward it.
The ceiling was at least twenty Jungkooks tall. As for the rest of the environment, it was filled with data cores containing potentially billions of credits. Each core was a rectangle like the one Jimin had in his pack. They all had a navy blue energy line to indicate they were online and working. All of them were operational, which meant all Jimin had to do was make it to the transfer room that was on the second floor.
The vault had little light and opted to let the blue energy lines make up for it. The cores were stacked on top of one another and went so high they almost touched the ceiling. The width of the vault was as large as the ceiling. There had to be at least thirty rows of credits, and Jimin knew that meant whoever got their hands on it would become the richest person in the Settled Systems.
Jimin strolled toward the back and noticed there were deactivated turrets and robots. Much to his amazement, there weren't many robots. Instead, there were dead human guards. They were decomposed enough to be skeletons, and Jimin grunted and gagged as he stepped over them and vacated to the corner, where the heavy security door was. It was half-open, so Jimin forced it down and panted from the exertion. Inside was a staircase leading up one story. One of two flights of stairs. Nice.
A turret was mounted at the top, but it was deactivated as expected. Jimin climbed and entered the next region, which was yet another staircase. Two of two. Progress.
Finally, after what felt like a century, Jimin made it to the transfer room. It was lit up like the vault door with white light and a bunch of computers that were offline. The power restart system was on the left and right sides of the room, and it was two red levers that needed to be pulled to bring the power back online.
Jimin came closer and saw a dead body plopped next to one of the chairs. It was a skeleton with a faded leather jacket and pants that were torn to shreds. He knelt and rummaged through the remains to find a transfer key. He found it, but he also found a slate. It was an audio recording. Jimin held it close. Although he had little time, he had to admit he was curious. So, he pressed play.
And the voice of Jasper Kryx came.
"Son of a bitch!" Jasper said over the recording. "Nothing! Complete waste of time! I've tried everything I can possibly think of, and I end up right where I started. And here I thought I was so clever. Thought I had it all figured out. First, fix my ship and get the prototype shielding back online. Second, shunt the power from the 'CredTank array' back to the system to drain the credits. Then third, haul ass back to my ship before the EM field rips apart the Legacy. Three easy steps, right? Only problem is, I'm stuck at step one. Every system on my ship is dead, and there's nothing aboard this ship to use for repairs."
The audio went quiet as Kryx took in several deep, painful breaths. It sounded as though he had been injured.
"I can't believe I came all this way just to end up stuck here like the poor bastards who ran this ship. No food, no water... that's it. The Legacy is over."
Like his last sentence, the audio ended, and Jimin dropped the slate as he made the realization: in front of him was Jasper Kryx. It was strange, really. Jasper Kryx had been built up to be some legend, yet he died just as easily as anyone else.
He was the man who had started the Fleet's curse on the galaxy, and also the one who had went to the Legacy, the same Legacy Jimin stood in. Only he wasn't going to fail. Unlike Kryx, his ship hadn't been damaged by the EM field. Unlike Kryx, he had been debriefed on the mission in more detail and had brought someone with him to help.
Kryx was a ghost story, and as Jimin towered over the remains of the pirate who had caused so much chaos, he found himself desiring to spit on the body. Kryx was breakable. That meant the entire Fleet was too. Kryx had three steps, yet he had failed all of them. He had been weak.
Jimin had easier steps to follow. He only needed steps two and three. Starting with step two, the power. The power transfers were on the left and right side, so he hurried and turned the Legacy back on. The lights flicked on, and he knew that meant many of the security measures would come back online. It didn't matter too much. He had a feeling the second he downloaded the credits, the systems would overload and blow anyway, so the turrets and robots would get destroyed.
He approached the main monitor that had a slot for the data core he brought with him. He took it out of his pack and shoved it in, then used the transfer key Kryx had to activate the transfer process. He watched as the credits drained from the Legacy and entered the core. A laugh left his throat. He did it. He got to the vault, destroyed two robots, and found Jasper Kryx.
The pettiness in him couldn't be stopped: he kicked Kryx and made fun of him for creating the pirates but dying due to his greed. Jasper Kryx didn't fight back. The skeleton slumped over and didn't protest as Jimin drained the credits from the Legacy.
Finally, something had gone right. Jimin had a feeling that wouldn't last, but he celebrated for the time being.
Within a minute, the credits entered the data core. He freed it from the slot and inserted it back in his pack. As soon as he did, sirens went off, and the emergency lights flicked back on. Right when he went to press on his long-distance comm, an explosion rung out and destroyed the cores that had once held the credits, which Jimin had predicted would happen. What he didn't predict was that smoke would fill the entire ship at a rapid rate, and he had a feeling it was poisonous. His suit's filters could only do so much to help.
He pressed on his comm. "Y/n! The ship's falling apart, but I got the creds! I'm on my way back!"
"Hurry, Jimin! I can't keep us docked for long, it's unstable!"
He didn't disagree. That time, he left the comm open. He broke the window overlooking the vault and jumped down. It wasn't a long fall, but his legs stung after it. He groaned and wobbled to his feet, then he realized a turret pointed right at him. The symbol came to his mind without him needing to consciously do it, and he fired a particle beam to annihilate the turret from existence.
Jimin coughed and wheezed from the smoke entering his lungs. His filters weren't doing enough to keep it out, and his scanners said it was carbon monoxide. Too much of it could kill him. So not only was his ship and Y/n in danger, but he was in danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.
How wonderful.
His legs carried him out of the vault. More wet, staggering coughs ripped themselves out of his brittle throat; it was like an oxymoron to itself. At the same time, his lungs twisted and turned inside him. His gut did jumping jacks and made him wish to vomit. Jimin did his best to contain it, but he couldn't help the bile that burned him as it rose.
With as much strength as he could muster, he went to the engine room and found the robots had activated. His AA-99 whipped free of its holster, and he fired away while also thinking of the particle beam symbol. When his hand lit up, he fired and melted through a robot. He did a combat roll to get behind a wall as minigun bullets whizzed by him. Grunts and yelps parted from his parched lips, and he hyperventilated at the stress.
"Jimin? What's going on? Are you hurt?" Y/n's frantic voice asked in his helmet.
Oh yeah, he forgot he left the comm open. He groaned in response and thought of the symbol again despite how much it hurt his brain. He peeked the corner and shot the particle beam, and it smashed into another robot. He had killed five, but there were five left, all firing at him.
His lips began bleeding from how hard he bit them. Then, he shot more rounds of his AA-99, but it clicked empty a moment later. He didn't have time to reload, so he opted to use his powers once more. He waited until two of them lined up, then he fired and got both of them with one particle beam.
Jimin ducked behind cover. There was one robot left that hadn't been shot by either his rifle or beam. Reloading would cost him several valuable seconds, but his mind was overwhelmed. His veins nibbled at him and screeched their disdain for his movements; however, one more beam would do it. The particle beam was his most effective weapon that wasn't as risky as leaving cover to shoot. All he had to do was point his hand.
So that was what he did.
The symbol came to him, and he hated how his legs wobbled and his wrist ached. He screamed as he shot one last beam, destroying the robot, but also him with it. Jimin crashed. His body shut down and he fell with a 'clunk!' to the metal ground. Despite the hefty spacesuit, it felt cold. Too cold. His eyesight wavered, and Y/n's shouts filled his ears, yet they were distant.
A soft smile blessed his face. Once again, Park Jimin had failed. He was far too weak to stand, and he knew no motivation from Y/n could do it. He clawed at the floor as if that'd help. It didn't. Weakness overshadowed every ounce of strength he thought he had. Not even the thoughts of his lonely mother could get him to stand. But...
"Jimin..."
A voice he couldn't distinguish bounced around his brain. His mind fuzzed up as he attempted to identify who it was, but he couldn't. The voice was neither male or female. It held a holiness he couldn't comprehend. It was as if an angel was speaking to him, and his bones reignited with a fire he had never felt before.
Sharp shrieks shattered his eardrums, and only after he got to his knees did he realize they came from him. The mysterious voice whispered sweet nothings until he found more and more courage. More and more passion. More and more strength.
"Get up, Park Jimin," the voice said, much clearer than before. It took the form of several voices, male, female, something in between—everything. It was an amalgamation of the universe, and Jimin couldn't help but obey. "Your story isn't over yet."
The voice left as fast as it had appeared, and Jimin got up. Gasps tore free from his mouth. His skin formed goosebumps he thought would never disappear. However, he had no time to question the holy scene he had just witnessed. Whoever that voice was, it had saved him. It had gotten him to rise.
"I'm-" Jimin paused to cough. "-fine."
He wasn't. Blood wrenched its way out of his mouth and cloaked his helmet, but he knew he had to move. He continued through the engine room and made it back to the reactor, where the two dead robots were. More smoke crowded his helmet to the point where he could barely see. He had to rely on memory, and he did. It was as if he could hear Hoseok guiding him using his photographic memory.
Jimin made it through the reactor, then the vault door, then the hallways. All of it built up until he was outside the hatch, and Y/n yanked him in and shut it behind him. His helmet came off, and blood sprang free. His ship's floor got covered with it, and Y/n shouted at the sight.
"Get us out of here!" Jimin said instead, not caring how much blood came out of his mouth. "Go! Before we both die!"
Y/n obeyed despite her hesitation. Jimin remained in the bay to cough up liquid and question what the fuck was wrong with him. He hoisted himself into one of the jump seats and strapped in, but every moment was excruciating. Agony became his lifeline as pain replaced his limbs. Every inch of skin stabbed at him and made him feel as though his body was turning in and out, and it all originated from his lungs, which rumbled more and more with every creak his ship made.
They departed the Legacy, and although he couldn't hear an explosion, he could feel the vibration of it. The Legacy had exploded. Jimin had barely gotten off in time if it weren't for the mysterious voice. If it were one second later, he'd be dead. But why? Why was a higher power so adamant on defending him? Beyond that, Jimin still couldn't comprehend why him. Why was he the chosen one? He didn't want power; no, one man with all the power was far from pleasant. He'd rather chop off his right hand than become an all-powerful being.
Jimin had lost himself before. His entire childhood had been lost to the Colony War and the crime he had fallen to, but with Constellation, he had a new life. A new purpose. He couldn't risk losing that due to a lust for power. What if the higher beings changed him and made him do their bidding? What if he wasn't the chosen one but rather a pawn in an elaborate, cosmic-level game of chess?
He didn't get a chance to think about it. As soon as they jumped to what Jimin assumed was the neighboring system, Y/n came sprinting back to him. She unbuckled him and helped him to the infirmary. When he plopped down in the infirmary's rock-hard bed, she strapped the auto-med pack around his arm, and it scanned his vitals. His heartbeat was low, and upon looking in the mirror hanging off the ceiling, Jimin noticed how pale he was. His chin and lips were surrounded by a gooey crimson fluid that felt unbearably hot as it dripped down his tingling flesh.
Y/n watched the hologram that reported his condition. The infirmary was far too bright, just like any hospital was. The white light strained his vision, and he squinted to give himself a reprieve from the ache his figure felt. Although he couldn't see her, he could feel her face fall.
"No, no," she whispered, and he heard her typing. "That can't be right."
"What? What is it?"
She didn't answer for a long beat. "You have severe lung damage. We need to get you back to New Atlantis, I'll have Reliant take a look at you-"
He opened his eyes and grabbed her elbow before she could move. She stiffened and met his gaze. Blood threatened to spill out his open mouth, but he held it back and cleared his throat.
"Not until it's done."
"Are you out of your mind?!" she asked in a wail, jerking her elbow away from him. "Jimin, you could die. Let UC SysDef handle this! You did your job, now let them do theirs."
"No." He shushed her before she could protest. "Y/n, they're going to kill Hoseok and Delgado. I can't let that happen. I need to get to the Key."
"Jimin, no," she said with an urgency he had never heard from her before. Her hands went to his cheeks, and his heaves became agonizing. "You don't need to do everything yourself."
"I'm not, but you know Hoseok and Del won't go down without a fight. I need to be there, I need to try. Maybe they'll listen to me, or at least I can help. Anything if it means saving them."
"They're pirates, Jimin. You're more important."
"I know they're pirates, but they're my friends! They care about me!" He placed his hands over hers and didn't care how much he sobbed. "Please, Y/n. Take us to Kryx. We can't leave SysDef, and I can't leave Hoseok and Del. Please."
Y/n backed away from him and dropped her shaking hands. Eye contact wasn't made, but he knew she wasn't angry at him. Several stray strands of her locks fell in her face. He wished he had the energy to swipe them away and reassure her that he'd be fine, that he'd give her the kiss he had promised her, yet before he could, she nodded.
"Okay."
