STARDUST challenge 4 (Stealer of a Story-Teller)
"Sit down, Ms. Larson," The police officer said as he led me into the one-way room. I sat down on the chair that was placed in front of the long table in the middle of the room. I then looked at the walls around me. I knew I couldn't see the people behind them... but I knew they could see me. I wonder, how many people are watching me right now?
The officer cleared his throat making me turn back to him. He then handcuffed my wrists to the table and then turned on a bright light that shone in my face. I squinted as the light blinded me.
"So... whenever you're ready," The officer said.
"Ready for what? I have nothing to say," I said as I stared at the handcuffs.
"Ms. Larson—"
"Enough with the niceties, call me May," I said as I twisted my wrist in the handcuffs. I grimaced as the cuffs started rubbing my wrist raw.
"Relax, stop struggling, just tell us what happened," The officer told me. I tried looking at him, but the light was there. I then stared at the table. "Whenever you're ready," He said again.
I sighed. I just silently stared at the table. I heard the officer shuffle. He tapped his fingers against the table. "Alright, alright..." I said as I sighed. "It all started when..."
2 weeks earlier...
I stood in line at the coffee shop. I checked the time on my small purple watch latched tightly around my wrist. "I'm gonna be late," I whispered as I looked ahead of me to see how many more people had to have their order taken. I huffed and stepped out of the line and walked out of the coffee shop.
RING!
I heard my phone buzz from the inside of my purse. I unzipped my purse and took out my phone. "Hello?" I asked.
"May! Where are you? You're gonna be late girl!" My friend Rachel yelled over the phone.
"I know, I know, I'm on my way," I said as I hung up and started running down the sidewalk, my knee-high boots making a soft click as they hit the ground. I turned the corner and—
I ran into a stranger. The guy just took a step back and walked around me. "Watch where you're going!" I yelled to him. He ignored me. I scoffed and continued running down the street. I showed up at an apartment building a few minutes later and ripped open the door.
"I'm here, I'm here!" I called as I saw Rachel, Harley, and Rihanna waiting for me.
"Took you long enough," Rachel said.
"Well, now that you're here we should go over the plans—"
"What plans?" The officer asked, cutting me off.
"The plans? Well, the plans for after college... of course, we are graduating soon," I said.
"I see... continue," The officer said, shuffling in his chair again.
"Alright, so of course we discussed our plans and such..." I said looking around the room everywhere except where the light was.
"Okay, what happened after that?"
"Um... well, I met that guy I ran into on the way home again..."
I walked out of the building after discussing the plans... I then began walking down the street. I then saw the same guy I ran into on my way to the abandoned building—
"What were you doing at an abandoned building?" The officer asked cutting me off once more.
I sighed and said, "Discussing plans."
"But why at an abandoned building?"
I twisted my thumb and looked at him and said, "It was my parent's old apartment... they died when I was young, so I go there all the time. It makes me feel happy."
"I'm sorry," The officer said, giving me his sympathy. I looked at my hands and hid behind my long hair... and smirked. I then took in a deep breath, acting as if I was pained.
"Anyways, so I'll skip to the part where I'm talking to the guy," I said.
"It's you again..." I said approaching the guy I ran into earlier. He was wearing a black hoodie. He turned around and looked at me.
"And it's you again..." He said as he looked at me.
"Yep," I said as I bought a cherry slurpy. "Actually, I feel like I've seen you a couple times."
"Is that right?" He asked while buying a blue slurpy.
"Yeah. Do you work around here?" I asked.
"Yeah, I'm an artist," The boy said.
"What kind of artist?" I asked.
"I get payed to do street art," He said. I blinked. I have seen a lot of professional art spray painted on walls around the city. I even see police officers enjoy them.
"That's sick," I said in awe of this boy's talent. "What's your name?"
"Aalto," He said.
"That name sounds familiar," I said.
"I'm named after a famous artist who lived a long time ago," The boy, Aalto, said.
"That's ironic," I said.
"What's your name?" Aalto asked.
"May," I said, taking a sip from my slurpy.
"May..." He whispered. "I like that." I rolled my eyes as I started walking toward the door of the small store. Aalto did the same. We both walked out of the store. "Listen... actually, wait, are you a good artist?" He asked.
"I'm an artist... kind of..." I said looking at him.
"Do you... want to spray paint around town later?" Aalto asked.
"Seriously?" I asked.
"Yeah," He said.
"Um..." I looked around and then at my phone... I'm supposed to meet up with Rachel and them tomorrow... but that can wait. "Sure," I said.
"Great! Meet me back here tomorrow!" Aalto called as he jogged down the sidewalk. I smiled and turned around and dialed Rachel's number on my phone.
"Hello?" Rachel asked over the phone.
"Hey, can we do the watch-ama-call-it tomorrow?" I asked.
"What? You want to postpone the—"
"Postpone what?" The officer asked cutting me off once more.
"We were going to write letters to the college of our choice and see if we can get accepted into them," I said confidently.
"I see. Please continue," He said.
"Thanks. Anyways... we'll go to the next day..."
I met up with Aalto behind the building. He was wearing his black hoodie and had a white mask on. He held another one in his hand and had bags of spray paint around him.
"Hey stranger," I called as I walked up to him. Aalto looked at me.
"You made it," He said, his voice slightly muffled underneath his mask.
"What's the mask for?"
"Keeps you from inhaling paint chemicals," He said.
"Ah," I said as Aalto stood in front of me and put the mask that was in his hand over my face. While he did so, I looked at his eyes, realizing how blue they were. They were like staring into an ocean...
"Ready?" Aalto asked.
"Heck yeah," I said.
"So that entire day was filled with me and Aalto getting to each other... I ended up postponing the... letters and such," I said trying to remember what I told the officer what me and Rachel's "plans" were.
"Did he give away any key evidence that gave away the crime he caused?"
"He said something about visiting a museum to look at art... apparently that was where he got his motivation, but I never said he caused a crime," I said.
"Hmm..." The officer said as he nodded and scribbled down notes. "Continue," he said.
"Well... everyday me and Aalto met up... we started dating actually... and then, um, everything was fine. We were happy— are happy," I said looking at the officer's hand on the desk, avoiding the light shining in my eyes.
The officer leaned forward so I could see his face. He then said, "I don't believe you."
I hid behind my hair, looking frightened, but really trying to hold back a laugh. I exhaled and looked at him. I then put a hand over my mouth, appearing vulnerable. Sad. The officer's face looked concerned as he leaned back. He gave me a second to "collect myself". I then looked at my hands.
"I promised him I wouldn't tell you..." I whispered.
"Who?"
"The officers..."
"Are you going to tell the police about this?" Aalto asked, his eyes wide.
"No," I whispered. "But know this, Aalto. I gave you your chance, and you used that chance to stab me in the back."
"But he did commit a crime," I said.
"What crime?"
"You know what crime," I said.
"I know, but I need the witness to say the crime to declare this official."
I dropped my face in my hands and whispered, "I'm sorry, Aalto." I then looked up and closed my eyes.
"Aalto stole a one million-dollar painting that was at the museum," I said. I exhaled as I dropped my face back in my hands. The officer nodded and scribbled down notes.
"Alright... thank you for clearing this entire situation up. You are free to go," The officer said as he turned off the light bright light and unlocked the handcuffs.
"Thank you," I whispered as I stood up in the chair and walked out of the one-way room. I then walked outside the police station and saw a certain boy in a black hoodie looking at me.
"Hey, Aalto," I said as I gave him a small kiss on the cheek. "Did you do what I asked?"
Oscar rolled his eyes and took off his hoodie revealing blond hair instead of brown. I started laughing. It actually looked good, I just wasn't used to it.
"Aalto? Is that the name you gave me?" Oscar asked.
"Yeah," I said as Oscar unlocked the car that was behind him. He opened the passenger door.
"After you," He said.
"Why, thank you," I said, laughing as I stepped inside the car.
"Masks off ladies," Oscar said. I smirked and looked behind me to find Rachel, Harley, and Rihanna. They ripped off what looked like a robber's mask... or what actually was a robber's mask.
"Did you get it?" I asked. Harley squealed excitedly while Rachel nodded proudly. Rihanna just sat there smiling. "Well, then Oscar, let's go."
We all sat in the car, cheering as we drove to "my parent's old apartment".
"You told them what?" Oscar asked while laughing.
"I told them your name was Aalto and that our secret layer was an old apartment complex that my dead parents used to live in... so I go there because it makes me feel happy," I said while laughing. Oscar and the girls laughed with me.
"And they believed you?" Harley asked, surprised.
"Of course, they did. This is May Larson we're talking about," Oscar said while putting an arm around me as he parked the car. We then got out of the car. Rachel and Harley opened the trunk to show a one million-dollar painting.
"Well, done team," I said as I added the painting into our collection. "How much money do we have now?"
"Officially... one billion dollars' worth of stuff," Oscar said.
"Oh my gosh!" I yelled. "Really?"
Oscar nodded. I immediately threw my arms around him and hugged him. Rachel, Harley, and Rihanna started laughing as they pulled back a rope, pulling a curtain back, revealing expensive art and jewels, and lists that go on and on and on...
"Years of stealing and we finally made it..." I whispered. "Well, done team."
