Prolouge: The One He Trusts
The young man gets off the bus on the first day or Spring, uncertain if he made the right choice coming to Stardew Valley, knowing only he had no choice. He tries to reassure his fears, "It's what William said to do. He has a plan."
As he gets off the bus he ponders what his first move, remembering how the sirens blared as he fled that wretched town. However the rural nature of this place gives the young man little hope for the locals.
"Trade one redneck Hell for another?" The voice in his head chuckles, the hallucination standing next to him with crimson eyes and a black jacket identical to that of the young man, the only difference that the young man has is a slightly less underweight appearance, even with his ribs visible, no muscle or fat on his malnourished body as his brown eyes meet the eyes of a women with red hair.
"Hello," she greets with a kind smile, "Are you Richard West?"
"She's one of them," the hallucination taunts.
Richard nods, "You Robin?"
Robin, the middle-aged kind soul smiles, "Yup! You must be the kid William wrote about! Man he's talked a lot about you! Happy late 20th birthday!"
Richard almost corrects her, "I'm actually sixteen," before remembering he has to pretend to be older. If he gets caught now he's strait to prison.
"Hello young man!" A jolly voice greets, the warm soul in a green shirt greeting Richard with a firm hand shake, "I'm Lewis. Mayor of this town. It's nice to see a new face."
Richard pulls away and replies, "Yeah pleasure to meet you. Now look I don't wanna talk much I gotta get working. Got bills to pay, plants to... plant. I mean I gotta get things up and running you know?"
Robin nods, "Your farm is to the left. I can upgrade it because between you and me it's kinda old and-"
"I prefer cozy," Richard smiles, "I'll talk to y'all tomorrow. I can't wait to meet everyone."
Richard waves goodbye and enters the overgrown farm.
"Should we tell him about... the problems in the night?" Lewis asks.
"We will tomorrow," Robin replies, "He's not gonna be up that late."
Richard instantly begins clearing the farm and planting the parsnips given to him by Lewis.
"Yeah there's impure people here," the voice reminds.
"Shut up Purity," Richard glares tilling the soil, "Just shut up for one day!"
"Yeah last time I shut up that went well," the split facet of the teen's psyche chuckles, "How do you think we ended up in this mess? We have the mask, and we-"
"Aren't doing anything," Richard glares, "Now I'm going to work. Shut up."
Purity sighs and falls silent, the fake being sitting in the peripheral of Richard's sight until the sun begins to set. Richard wipes sweat from his brow and enters the home, deciding to watch the news before bed.
The new anchor speaks, "The attacks from the vigilante Purity have ceased. Purity has not been spotted for several days and many believe he was killed in his most recent crime, an attack on-"
Richard turns the T.V. off, and takes a white hockey mask from his pocket. He mutters to himself, "Protect the kids. This world must be pure."
With that he decides to go to sleep...
The next day he heads into town after watering his crops, arguing with Purity as he walks down the street, quietly, "Purity we have to try."
"This is a backwoods Hell!" Purity exclaims, "You need to purify this place! It's-"
Richard bumps into a young girl who reads as she walks with red hair.
"Oh I'm so sorry!" He exclaims helping her up, "I'm Richard. Are you OK?"
"Yeah I'm alright," the young girl replies, "My name is Penny. Are you the new farmer?"
Richard nods, "Yeah. It's nice to meet you. May I ask you something?"
Penny nods.
"Have you heard the shit about this vigilante guy?" Richard inquires, "It's crazy! He's attacking abusive parents left and right!"
"Yeah he's..." Penny sighs, "I... why are you asking about this?"
"He was on the news last night," Richard replies.
"And he's us!" Purity laughs.
"Didn't he..." Penny sighs, "Hurt someone? Like, really bad?"
"He broke some bones of some..." Richard chooses his words carefully, "Bad people, but, I would argue he's a necessary evil. Think about it. He's protecting kids isn't it?"
"Oh I totally agree," Penny sighs, "I just... wish he didn't resort to violence. I wish I could meet him. Show him how to help people in a better way."
Penny brushes it off and continues, "I have to go teach the kids. You seem to like kids, wanna come along? Help me? Vincent and Jas can be trouble."
Richard shakes his head, "I would love to but..."
"She sounds like she's pure," Purity whispers, "But is she truly?"
Richard turns away, "Some other time. There's many I haven't met."
Penny nods in understanding, "Sounds great."
From there Richard introduced himself to everyone and began to grow melons until the egg festival where as he bought strawberry seeds he heard a voice chuckle, "I added something 'special' to the punch."
"OK we have a target," Purity sighs.
Richard turns to see Penny glaring at her mother, whom he has yet to formerly meet and hears them argue, "Mom there are children here!"
"Hey it's OK I-" Pam begins to explain but Richard is already hearing voices, and his vision darkens. He sees only Pam. He doesn't hear her. He sees only someone who is impure.
"Purify," the voices demand.
"Richard?" Penny asks, "Richard are you OK?"
He's snapped out of his hatred.
"You understand," he whispers, "You understand don't you? That kids need to be protected from... that."
Penny only nods, the agreement in their hatred formed without words.
"I trust you completely," Richard explains with a deranged smile that Penny isn't sure to take as sincere, unnerving, or deranged, so she takes it as all of the above. She can see in Richard's eyes, Richard trusts her now. Why not before? This she doesn't understand. That's what makes her uneasy. In those eyes she sees broken trust. Damaged trust. What happened? She does not know, but she is frozen in her own mind trying to guess as Richard discreetly walks over, Penny the only one seeing him, and pretends to accidentally fall, spilling the punch.
"Oh sorry," he apologizes as everyone turns to him, "I'm OK. My bad. I tripped."
Penny looks at him, concerned now as she notices him gripping something in his jacket pocket as he passes by Pam. Something heavy, blunt.
"You should lay down," Harvey explains, "It could be dehydration, get some water and head home."
"Thanks," Richard replies. He begins to leave, and stops to whisper to Penny, "If anyone in this town is a threat to Jas or Vincent, tell me. I will keep them safe."
"Richard," she asks, quietly, "What do you mean?"
"I will not let the two get hurt," Richard explains, "You understand."
Penny does understand, but something about his words feel off. He feels... unsound. Unstable. She can tell that something is wrong.
"Do you need help?" She asks.
"Just tell me who I can't trust," Richard replies.
"I've never thought to check," Penny admits, "But you can trust me. Why did you come to Stardew Valley."
"I'll tell you some other time," Richard replies, "Have a great day Penny."
Richard walks off and returns to his farm. This story has merely begun. As questions are raised. Richard is Purity, but what does he mean by purify? Well...
"It must be done," the voices explain.
Richard nods putting on the hockey mask outside the saloon late in the night. A voice modifier changing his words to mechanical, scratchy, twisted threats. Pam exists and is confronted by the young vigilante.
"Pam," Richard glares, "I am Purity. You are impure."
"Woah woah easy!" Pam explains, "Hey! Hey! Is this about the punch? Easy dude. I can explain!"
"I'll give you one chance," Richard glares.
"Your mistake," the voices sigh.
"I was gonna keep an eye on it!" Pam explains, "I wasn't gonna let the kids near it! I'm a drinker yeah but I know right from wrong."
"Very well my apologies," Richard sighs, "But you hurt a kid, I'll come for you. I'll purify you, and if you tell anyone you saw me, I'll find you. Purity wasn't here."
Pam nods in understanding and runs away. Richard sighs and flees into the forest, mask on, thinking no one has seen him but...
"Oh imma get some good money for these photos," Haley smirks from the bushes, "Purity eh? This is a scoop. A scoop I'm sure can catch the eyes of the photography feild. I can't wait for these to be developed in Fall..."
