Chapter 4: Open Doors
I DO NO OWN SVTFOE, GRAVITY FALLS OR THE OWL HOUSE. ALL RIGHTS AND OWNERSHIP BELONG TO DISNEY.
There are going to be a few POV changes in this chapter, as I can't think of a way to tell the story with one persons point of view. Sorry if it gets confusing, I will try to keep shenanigans like that to a minimum in the future.
(Star's POV)
The sun shines across Gravesfield as I wake up, the cold autumn sunshine glaring through the window onto the bed in mine and Marco's room. I open my eyes and see Marco sitting up in the bed, looking at his phone. "Good morning," I say with my dreary morning voice.
"Good morning beautiful," Marco replies. He leans down and kisses my forehead before getting out of the bed and heading for the en suite bathroom. I sit up in bed and stretch my arms, still in awe of the perfect little town that exists just beyond the window, watching it slowly wakeup as the sun continues to rise.
"I've been texting the others," Marco calls out from the bathroom. "They said they'd meet us at breakfast in a bit, so I'm going to get ready." I hear the shower in the bathroom turn on and the shower door open and close. I get up out of the bed and head over towards the little desk come dressing table, complete with mirror. I sit at it and just observe the room, enjoying every aspect of it I can. The trip so far has gone perfectly, and even though this is only the second day I can't think of anything that could ruin it. I stretch out once again before opening the closet and picking out my clothes for the day. Marco comes out of the bathroom, a towel around his waist as he walks into the room, drying his hair. "I left the shower running for you," he says as he points to the bathroom. I nod as I head in and get ready for the day.
Marco and I, after finishing getting ready, leave our room and head down to the lobby. As always Dipper, Mabel and Zach are waiting for us. We join up with the group and head towards the breakfast area, enjoying a delicious meal, after which we head out the door of the bed and breakfast. "Ok, so we have our tour with Masha lined up at the Historical Society today, so we should head over there first. We don't want to keep her waiting." Marco puts the name of the building into his maps app, and after it pops up he takes off leading the way for the rest of us.
Its take a while for us to arrive at the building, not just due to us getting lost in this new town a few times but also because the building seemed a lot closer from the window in my room than it was. In reality it seemed closer because it is quite a large building. It is built like a form of old church, with a turret protruding from the back of the red brick body. Moss is growing over one side of the building, obscuring one of the multiple windows, comprised of many panes of glass and encompassed with wooden bay windows. All in all, the building is a bountiful example of the kind of architecture that makes this town feel so homely to be in. We walk up the door and head inside.
As we walk in, we see a pair of familiar faces. Behind the desk is Masha, wearing her classic G.H.S t-shirt, and on the other side is Vee, who is wearing some kind of work get up. As we walk in, Masha gives us another massive grin that I, of course, reciprocate instantly. "Hey guys," she says as we walk up to the desk. "You ready for your tour."
"Of course," I reply. I look over to Vee. "You didn't say you worked here too Vee," I say, gesturing to her clothes.
She waves her hands in front of herself and smiles. "No no no, I just got off of a shift. I don't work here, this is way more of Masha's area than mine." She turns back to Masha and gives her a kiss on the cheek. "I need to go meet up with Luz, so I'll see you tonight."
"Ok, I'll see you later." Masha gets up and gives Vee a hug before walking up to us. "Ok, if you'll follow me through the door we can get the tour started."
(Dipper's POV)
As Masha talks to the others, I can't keep my eyes off of Vee as she walks away. I still have the feeling I have seen her somewhere before. I watch her as she walks off, trying to convince my mind its going crazy, when suddenly something catches my eye. As Vee walks down the path, she walks past a large tree. As she comes back into view from behind it, her outfit has changed. It has gone from the work outfit she was wearing before to a more stylish jacket and t-shirt combo. My mystery brain starts working in overdrive, and suddenly this newfound brain power reminds me where I had seen her before. I grab my journal from my jacket pocket and open it up to a page of newspaper clippings that detail weird sightings around town, and there she is. A few of the clippings include pictures and her, plus a few others, seem to always appear somewhere in them, even as far back as 4 years ago. Either in the background or just off to the side, the same group are always there, and she is obviously part of it. As Masha leads the others through one of the doors, I nudge Zach and he hangs back.
"Dipper, what's up?"
"Look," I say, showing him the clippings. "I told her I recognised her. She is in each of these pictures. She has to know something about the weirdness in this town."
"Ok cool, so we know where she's from. What now?"
I close my journal and put it back into my jacket. "I'm going to see if she'll answer some questions."
"Ok, I'll come with you. This has just become very interesting."
We both head out the building as the rest of the group follow Masha. We walk in the direction we last saw Vee heading. She seems to have disappeared, but we keep walking with hopes we'll spot her. Suddenly, as we turn a corner on a normal sub-urban street, we see her walk into a clearing in the woods nearby. As Zach and I head towards the clearing we hear a voice speaking, but not clear enough to hear what they are saying. We head into the clearing just in time to see the door of a small wooden house close. As the door closes, a white light from behind it seems to fade, as if someone had turned off all the lights inside. I turn to Zach. "I assume she went in there."
"Congrats captain obvious. Now what?"
Dipper shrugs. "I guess we just knock."
I head up to the house and knock the door. Nothing. I knock again. Still nothing. I turn back to Zach and shrug again. He steps up to the door. "Vee, are you there?" Still no response.
I walk around the house, the curtains are all closed but there doesn't seem to any signs of life from behind them, no lights, no voice, nothing. I come back around to the front of the house to find Zach scratching his head. I walk back up to the house and reach for the door knob. Zach puts a hand out to stop me. "What are you doing, this looks like someone's house?"
"There doesn't seem to be anyone inside, which makes no sense. We saw the door move and we head voice from inside. Maybe the people in there are in trouble."
Zach moves his hand away. "Your reasoning is sound, but I still think this is a bad idea."
I reach for the door knob again, this time taking it in my grasp and attempting to turn it. To my surprise the door is unlocked. It swings open revealing the inside of the house, which is completely void of life. It doesn't even appear as if anyone has been inside for a long time. "This is too weird," I say, looking at Zach.
He looks back at me. "We need to tell the others."
I close the door and we both head back towards the Gravesfield Historical Society.
(Star's POV)
Masha leads Marco, Mabel and I out of a door and back towards the lobby. "And that concludes the tour."
"That was amazing," I say. "Thanks so much."
Masha takes a seat behind the desk once again. "Its no problem, though its a shame your two friends disappeared."
Suddenly, Dipper and Zach appear at the front door and head over towards us. ""Speak of the devil."
Dipper looks visibly excited, Zach more so confused. "You guys need to come with us right now, we found something amazing."
"Yeah its insane, and also a bit confusing."
I look at them both before turning back to Masha at the desk. "I guess we are heading off then, maybe we'll see you around."
Masha gives us a little wave. "You know where I'll be."
Dipper leads us towards a clearing in the woods around the town, all the while catching us up on what he had just seen. He explained about Vee magically changing clothes, her presence in the newspaper clippings and then her entering a house before disappearing. As we approach the clearing we see the house he was talking about. It does look as if no one had been inside in a while, just like Dipper described, but everything else about it seemed normal enough.
Dipper walks up the to door. "I'm telling you, we saw light and heard voices, yet no one is inside."
Zach backs up his claim, and even opens the door and goes inside the house to illustrate it.
Mabel crosses her arms. "You do realise how creepy you both sound right now, right? Following a girl back to her house? Basically breaking in? I would hide from you too if I were her."
Dipper put a hand up to try and retort. "Yes, but Mabel..."
"But nothing, you are going to close that door and come back with us towards town, Vee is probably somewhere around here scared half to death."
I walk up towards the doorway where Dipper and Zach are standing. "Yeah guys, I'm all for adventure but this is ridiculous."
I continue to walk up to the doorway as Zach leaves the house and Dipper closes the door. Suddenly, as the door closes, I feel something violently shaking in my pocket. I reach inside and pull out my wand, which continues to shake in my hand. I turn back to Mabel and Marco who are waiting in the clearing. "Marco, come here a second."
Marco starts to walk over. "Sure Star, what's up?"
"Do you feel that?"
Marco continues to walk over to me. "Feel what?" Suddenly, he stops. "Wait a second." He reaches into his pocket and pulls out his own wand, which is also shaking violently. "That's really weird."
Mabel follows up behind Marco. "Star, does that happen often?"
"This has never happened before."
Dipper turns to face us and gasps. "Guys, look at the door."
I turn around to see what he is talking about. A white light has appeared from behind the door, and a pattern has started to form on it, a swirl of white light from the edges that is heading towards the middle but has not reached it yet. Dipper turns back to Marco. "Come closer, this has something to do with your wands."
As Marco starts walking towards the door again, the light gets brighter and the patters grows in length, finally reaching the middle as he stands beside me. The rest of the gang come to join us as we stare at the door, in awe of what Dipper and Zach managed to find. Dipper looks over to me. "Go on, open it."
I reach for the doorknob and turn it. The door swings open, and a childlike voice from seemingly behind it rings out, saying "welcome to the boiling Isles. Watch your step."
I take Marco's hand and look to the others. They nod, seemingly knowing what I was about to say. I take a deep breath and step through the door. The light is blinding, but I feel my shoe touch down on grass as I step through. I head fully through the doorway, and feel Marco come in behind me. Suddenly, I feel something vine like wrap around my body and lift me from the floor. Marco lets go of my hand as we are pulled apart, and I can tell by the sounds the others are making they have been caught as well. My eyes have yet to adjust to the light I have walked through, so I can barely see, but in amongst the sounds of my friends struggling I hear a new voice, this one seemingly belonging to an older woman.
"See King, I told you someone was messing with the portal."
