Chapter 13: An Explenation

(Star's POV)
I feel a fast wind blow past my face and the loud noise of engines around me. I open my eyes and see Marco leaning over me. I'm lying on the deck of Amity's airship, propped up against some sandbags that would have usually been used as ballast. I look around, trying to get a baring of my surroundings. The last thing I remember is Daegel disappearing, and now I am on the airship. Amity is at the helm and Luz is pouring over a map, seemingly planning our heading. I blink my eyes a few times, trying to adjust from the darkness of the cave to the full brightness of the sun in my face. As I do, Marco notices and calls out to the others. "Guys, Star's awake."
Luz rolls up the map and puts it on a small table and Amity summons an abomination to take control of the helm. I try to push myself up with my elbows as they make their way over to me. "Hold on Star, relax for a second." Marco helps me to a sitting position. I still feel weak, my strength having been sapped by what I just experienced, but slowly I am regaining my senses. All three of them are now kneeling and checking on me. "How do you feel Star?"
I push myself further into my seated position, balancing myself on the sandbags. "I've felt better. How did we get to the airship?"
"Luz scared off the creature and you passed out, so I picked you up and we hot footed it out of the cave."
Luz leans closer to me. "That thing, Daegel, it seemed to know you Star. It wanted you over everyone else. You need to explain to us what is going on."
I sigh, unwilling to recall that fateful day. "It wasn't that long ago." I tell Luz and Amity the story of our fight in Jump City, about how Daegel possessed my mum in an attempt to take over the planet, how he would have killed millions if we weren't there to stop him. "And then, once Avery forced him out," I swallow slightly, a tear welling up in my eye. Marco places a comforting hand on my shoulder and I take a deep breath. "After Avery forced him out of my mum, he took me as a hostage, holding some kind of alien gun to me as he attempted to make an escape, and when it didn't work he pulled the trigger. If it hadn't have been for Marco receiving his wand at that moment, I would have been dead." Marco wipes my eye and hugs me tightly.
Amity stands up. "I'm really sorry that you went through that, that's awful to hear. The point now remains however that this thing, Daegel... as you called it, is not only now on the Boiling Isles but has a piece of Belos to do titan knows what with."
Luz stands up and looks over to Amity. "We can worry about that later. Right now, we need to make sure that Star is safe."
Amity sighs. "You're right. You're right. I'm going to call ahead and tell them we need to speed up on those plans we had, make sure everything is ready for when we get back." Amity walks into the cabin and closes the door behind her, pulling a scroll from her pocket as she does.
Marco stands up so he is eye level with Luz. "What I can't understand is why it is here. The gun it was holding backfired, it should have been vaporised completely." Marco wipes his brow. "And even if it wasn't, how could it have found its way to the Demon Realm, to the Boiling Isles."
I pull myself to my feet. "It doesn't matter how or why. What matters is that Daegel is in fact here." I look Marco in the eyes. "We can do this, just like we did last time, together."
Luz smiles over Marco's shoulder, but Marco himself doesn't look convinced. For a split second he looks unsure, but it passes quickly and he puts on a brave face. "Of course Star."
Amity steps back out of the cabin. "I just spoke to hunter, apparently he had some help today and was able to finish earlier than expected. He said he is going to meet us when we land at the manor."
Luz sighs in relief. "Finally, one piece of good news today. How long until we land?"
"We've been going max speed for most of the journey, we should arrive in a few minutes. I'm going to take the helm and prepare us for the approach." Amity dispels the abomination that was steering the ship and takes the wheel herself, pulling down a pair of goggles she was wearing on her head and looking outwards into the horizon.
The last few minutes of the flight were filled with quiet, one bred of unease and worry. Marco tried his best to comfort me, keeping me close as we both stared silently towards the horizon, but regardless of what I said earlier, without our magic we don't stand a chance of defeating Daegel when he eventually returns. I know it and he knows it, but no one wants to be the one to say it out loud. Luz and Amity talk while Amity mans the helm, the conversation hushed with occasional glances towards me. Surely they too are also discussing this inevitability.
The airship approaches the manor and we ready ourselves to land. The landing gear extends and we make ground fall on the lawn. The landing ramp extends and Marco and I start to make our way towards it, but Luz stands in our way. "Can you guys just wait here for just a second, Amity and I have something to do before you get off."
We both nod, and Luz and Amity exit the airship. We look over the railings and watch them walk towards the gate, where a man our age is waiting. I assume that is the Hunter they were talking about earlier. To our surprise, standing next to Hunter is Mabel. The two of them are each holding something covered by a cloth. They pass them over to Luz and Amity respectively before climbing onto Hunter's palisman and flying off, Mabel giving me Marco a big toothy smile and a wave as she goes. Luz and Amity look up to the two of us and beckon us down from the airship towards them. We clamber down the ramp as they hold the packages out towards us, Luz smiling ear to ear. "We always planned on giving you these, just a little later, since we didn't expect you to grasp glyphs so quickly. However, due to this new circumstance that has arisen, we feel it best that we present them to you now so that you can learn to truly defend yourself. Luckily, thanks to the help of your friend Mabel, Hunter was able to finish these well ahead of schedule." Luz and Amity pull the cloth off of the packages, revealing two large butterfly sculptures resting on their hands, one of them all the colours of the rainbow and the other various shades of blue. "Star, Marco, these are your palismen."
My eyes widen as I look at the palismen resting in Luz and Amity's hands. I have no idea what to say, my words getting caught in my throat. I glance quickly over to Marco and he seems the same, his eyes fixed on his palisman. Amity chuckles slightly. "Well go on, pick them up."
Marco and I reach out to pick up our palismen, me grabbing the rainbow one and Marco getting the blue one. As we pick them up, the butterflies start to glow slightly and animate, fluttering around the two of us before settling on our shoulders, letting out adorable little clicks and chirps. My words finally find their way from my brain to my mouth. "These are amazing." It's all I can manage to say, I am taken aback by not only the palisman but also the generosity of Luz and Amity for giving them too us.
Luz pulls out her own palisman, a snake like creature that flies up to Luz's face and nuzzles against it. "Your palisman is a friend for life, but also a powerful tool. If you reach out your hand, it will understand and materialise as a staff for you to wield."
Marco and I do as instructed, holding out our hands. The butterflies flutter over to them, starting to change form even before they land. As they land on our hands, they finish their transformation, resting in our palms as the staffs we are used to seeing. All four of us stare at these staffs as if they are the most beautiful thing we have ever seen. I grip my palisman and wave it in the air, expecting something to happen, but nothing does. I look over to Luz. "You need to draw a spell circle."
Marco and I point our palismen upwards, drawing a circle in the air. A streak of light follows the tips of the palismen as they move through the sky. As the circles are completed, a shot of fire bursts forward from Marco's and a flurry of snow flies out from mine. Luz and Amity are smiling at us, but as I look over towards Marco his attention is somewhere else. His gaze is fastened firmly on the pocket of my jacket. "Star, your pocket seems to be glowing."
I follow his gaze down and sure enough my pocket is glowing. I look back over to Marco and notice this time that one of the pockets on his jacket is glowing also. "So is yours."
We both reach into our pockets and pull out our wands, which due to the high octane nature of recent events, we had forgotten were even on our person. We both hold our wands in our other hands, them glowing in a very similar manner to how they did when they came into contact with the portal door for the first time. "Star, look at your palisman," Marco suddenly exclaims. I look down towards my new palisman and see that it has transformed back from its staff into the butterfly form. Marco's has done the same, and both of them have flown over to our wands and landed on them. The four of us watch with held breath as the butterflies begin to glow the same brilliant colours the wands are glowing. The forms of the wands and the butterflies are obscured by the light, but even so we can see the general shapes of the butterflies beginning to change, and I can feel the wand in my hand begin to shrink in size. I look over to Luz. "What is happening?"
"I don't know, this has never happened before."
We both look back to the glowing amalgamation as suddenly the light bursts in a shower of sparkles. Both mine and Marco's wands have disappeared, and in their place sit our palismen, but they don't look as they did. Both of the butterflies have taken on the attributes of our wands, mine has developed a star like pattern on its wings, the edges of which have become rounded and more similar to the wings my wand once had. Marco's butterfly has become more crystiline in its design, its body becoming more jagged and shiny. Its wings, while mostly unchanged, now sport a crystle like pattern. I look from my palisman to Marco, then to Luz, and then back to my palisman again. "I think our palismen just combined with our wands."
Luz, Amity and I are still staring at our palisman as Marco holds out his hand and produces his staff. The staff looks different than before, the material it appears to be made from now having changed from wood to the same unknown material that our wands were made from. The head of the staff, that was the butterfly before, is now the crystal that topped Marco's wand. He looks over his staff, observing every inch. The crystal on the top is pulsing slightly with a dull blue glow. "I can feel the energy coming off of this. It feels a lot more powerful than it did before." Marco raises the staff and spins it quickly in his hand. He then reaches down and grabs one of the pieces of cloth that had been thrown on the floor, rolling it into a ball and throwing it over the top of Luz and Amity before pointing his staff at it as it flies away. "Explode." The cloth suddenly explodes into a hundred peices, the scraps of cloth flying in all different directions before settling on the floor. Marco's eyes widen as he turns back to me. "Star,I think these things let us use our magic."
I gasp, blinking a few times in disbelife. I don't say anything. I open my palm as my palisman in its new form flies onto it and my staff appears before me. My new staff is made of the same material as Marco's, the butterfy on the top now replaced by the orb with a star embeded in it that topped my original wand.
Marco holds out a hand in front of Luz and Amity. "You guys might want to take a step back."
The three of them take a few steps backward as I spin my staff in my hands. "SCOURGE OF THE RAINBOW DRAGON!" I yell as I slam the base of the staff into the ground. Suddenly, a massive rainbow dragon, larger than the manor house nearbye, flies out of the ground. It flies into the air and expels a mighty roar and a burst of rainbow coloured flame before diving back into the ground and disapearing. I turn towards the group. Luz and Amity are staring in awe, Marco is just smiling. He leans over to Amity. "You're lucky you didn't chose her to duel against."
Amity looks back to Marco. "Aint that the truth."
Marco looks across the Luz. "You guys are able to fly using these right?"
Luz takes a second to respond, but eventually snaps back to reality. "Yeah you can use your palisman to fly."
"How?"
Luz takes out her palisman and tosses it out infront of her, causing it to float in the air. She then sits on it. "It's kind of like riding a horse. You get on and lean in the direction you want to go."
Marco takes his palisman out and does the same, tossing it in front of him causing it to float. However, instead of sitting on it like Luz did he instead attempts to stand and balance on it. After placing his feet on the staff Marco wobbles for a bit, having to put his foot to the floor a few times before finaly being able to hold his balance. "It's kind of like riding a skateboard." After a few minutes of trial and error, Marco had learnt to control the staff in the air pretty well, much to the surprise of all of us on the ground.
Luz cups her hands to her mouth so Marco all the way in the air can hear her. "That's a pretty advanced flying technique, it's impresive you picked it up so quickly."
I turn to look at Luz. "So do you know what just happened, because I am very confused."
Luz shakes her head. "No idea. This is the first time I've seen other types on magic, let alone what your wands did to your palisman."
"I have an idea but it is just a theory," Amity says jumping into the conversation. "Maybe when, for whatever reason, your wands and palisman fused it changed the basic structure of your magic."
My eyes glaze over. "Excuse me?"
"What im trying to say is that titans passivly subdue other types of magic, which is why you couldn't use your wands before. But maybe, when they fused with the palisman, they changed your magic from whatever it was into titan magic. That would explain why you can use it now."
Luz scratches her chin, deep in thought. "I guess that would make sense. Althought again it is just a theory."
I pick up my staff and look it over. The orb at the top unfurls back into the butterfly and the staff itself dissapears, the butterfuly flying and landing on my shoulder. "So what do we call these things then. They arent fully a palisman, but they are more than just a wand now."
"I think you should decide." Luz glances at Amity and they both nod. "It was your wands that allowed this to happen. It makes sense for you to pick the name.
I think for a second, trying to find something to call them. "I think I'll call them Mewniun Palismen. Still recognisable as a Boiling Isles palisman but with a little bit of Mewni flare."
Luz and Amity look at me and then at eachother before turning back to me again. "I like it," they both say in unison.
Marco finaly flies down from his position high above us, where he had been during this conversation. "Star these things are great. We can use our old magic again and we can use them as transport." He take a breath. "No we have these, we need to go back to the cave and take out Daegel."
My eyes widen. Luz and Amity look equally as shocked at his statement. "Back to the cave? Marco I only just baely made it out of there alive I don't want to go back just yet."
Marco's face hardens. "What? We need to go back. Daegel is just going to get stronger. We need to take him out now or we will all suffer."
Luz steps forward. "I agree with Star. You werent there Marco, he exudes an imense power. Even at my full strength I don't think I could have taken him out and I'm lucky that he didnt realise that."
Amity joins in. "Luz is right Marco. Star isn't ready. We arent ready. We don't know what you getting your magic back is going to do in the long run or even if it'll last at all. If you take a moment to think I'm sure you'll agree with us."
Marco starts to look frantic, shaking his head. "I can't believe you, do you even hear yourselves. As long as Daegel is around Star is in danger, and if we let it continue it's only going to get worse. Daegel already nearly took Star from me twice now, and I will not let that happen again. Now you are either with me or not but I am going back to that cave."
None of us move. "I see how it is." Marco turns his palisman around and begins to fly off.
"Marco!" I shout after him. I begin to chace him as he speeds away but Luz stops me.
"He is doing this because he thinks its the only way to keep you safe. You are way to close to this problem for him to listen. Amity, you go after him, see if you can calm him down."
Amity nods before mounting her palisman and speeding off after Marco. I look down to the floor and Luz puts an arm around my shoulders. "She'll get him back." Luz leads me out of the gate and down a path towards the forest. "I have an idea of how all of us can destress, and I can teach you all about how to use titan magic in the meantime."
I wipe my eyes and look forward. "Ok, sounds good," I say as we walk into the forrest.
