Chapter 9 | A Not-So-Good Friendship
Wednesday.
A week passed, my phone was in my pants. Strolling down the hallway. I brush off my white shirt from dust. Many dissimilar teenagers amble down the hallway. I then heard swift footsteps toward my direction, making me turn to the cause of it. Unexpected, there was a hand on my shoulder. "I need your help." Leon ask seriously.
I blink. "Huh?"
"Because I don't understand math at all, I'm also barely passing with a seventy-two. I really, really, really, need help."
I scratch my head. "I'm no good either." I admit. "But Ana's good at it. She's in advance math, so she's really smart. We can study in the empty room with her."
His eyebrow slanted inward. He places his hand on his hips. "Fine. But only because I need the help."
I raise a eyebrow. "Do you not like Ana?"
Leon shakes his head. "No- I mean yeah I do like her! She's a great..... friend." He begins laughing. "Let's head to the place." His arms and leg move robotically as he moves past me.
"It's not lunch time yet." I state plainly.
Leon turns around slowly. "I knew that."
.....
.....
All three of us sat in a chair in the quiet room. The air felt a bit tense, some sweat falls from my forehead. I wanted to lighten the mood. "Why is it tense in here?" Their eyes widen.
"It's nothing. Now, what do you need help with?" Ana questions.
"Just on Algebra." I turn my head to my partner. "Is it the same for you?" He nods. Ana and Leon glare at each other when they had the opportunity. We open our notebook to our notes. I stared at my messy notes. Looking at Ana's, her's are organized and nicely written. I let out a breath.
Ana places a hand on my shoulder near Leon, then points to her jottings. "Here, you can copy off my notes." She peers at my notes. "Yours are so messy I can't even read them."
I clench my fist. "My hand writing isn't the best and you know that!" Ana chuckles.
Leon felt a headache. He places a hand on my hip, Ana immediately notices and grits her teeth. I place my hand in front of my stomach. "Would you mind explaining it to me?" Leon questions.
While she explained it, I couldn't understand a thing. But when teaching me, it felt easy. The room felt tense the whole time. I was able to learn more about algebra; though, but I could barely pay attention.
Later that day...
His face was hiding in his arms. Quiet snores could be heared from him. Some classmates look at him then chuckle and snicker. I poke his arm with my pencil. "Leon, wake up." I whisper. The teacher strolls toward him and stood in front of his desk. Crossing her arms and tapping her foot. Leon slowly raises his head, his droopy eyes meeting the teacher's.
"Um..... hello." Leon said awkwardly.
"Don't sleep in class, Mr. Leon." Ms. Cassie threatens.
"Sorry madam, I won't do it again." I couldn't help but chuckle a little.
.....
.....
It was the same the next day. Tense filled the room with a unsettling sentiment. Once again, Ana's hand was on my shoulder as Leon's hand was on my hip.
Leon leans toward my brown-haired friend. "Mind explaining this to me?"
Of course," Ana briskly answers. "The idiot needs help." She snaps.
Leon growls quietly. "Of course I talk like a idiot. How else would you understand me?" I clench my fist.
"At least this idiot is smarter then you. Friend stealer."
"Friend stealer!? I didn't steal anything." He claims.
I stood up. "Stop fighting you two! It makes me angry!" Their eyes widen as they inspect me. "Why are you two fighting anyways? You two seemed to be in good terms." Ana looks down before standing up and tramping out of the room. Slamming the door behind her. Leon crosses his arms and turns around.
I gaze at Leon. "What was that about?"
"Your little friend was just being rude." He stares at the ground. I pull a chair next to him before sitting next to my partner.
"I don't enjoy talking about emotions, because it isn't my strong point." I explain. "But I'll give the best feedback I can." Leon lets out a breath.
"Your not leaving until you get a answer, right?" I nod. He rubs his neck, rotating his body toward me. "Fine."
.....
.....
"I'm heading to the park. I'll be back later." I mumble. The phone was to my ear, Khaki was on the phone.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. Bye." I quickly hanged up afterward. Strolling down the sidewalk, my stomach was twisted.
Not too long after, I was sitting on a bench. Watching young kids play on the park. I begin gripping on my jeans, my heart felt trapped. Unable to escape. My nose felt tingly as my eyes began to sting. "Is this... my fault?" I thought. Placing a hand over my shirt.
"Marissa?" I look over to see the orange haired boy. I quickly look away as I wipe my eyes. Standing up from the bench.
"Yes?" Leon jogs toward me and studies me. I look up at him with a small smile, fiddling with my fingers behind my back.
Leon rubs his arms, his eyes avoiding eye contact. "I'm sorry, for what yu had to witness." He places a hand on my shoulder. Staring straight at me with a confident smile. "I'm sure if we talk Ana through this, everything will be okay." That was something I needed to hear. The grip over heart lossens as my uneasiness weakened.
The wind blows as we sensed another presences behind me. Leon's hand drops from my shoulder. We both turned our head to spot the brown haired girl. "Anna?"
Ana looks up at Leon. Her face was screaming of uncertainty. "I'm sorry..." her head lowers. "But," her head shoots up. "You must choose. Me or Leon." She sticks out her hand. I slowly stood up as I rest my shaking hand on my shirt.
Staring at her hand, my hand reaches for her as I grab it. Ana smiles. Leon's eyes widen when I grabbed his hand as well. "I choose..." I survey my friend. "Both of you." Ana's eyes widen as her grip loosens.
Leon let's go as he saunters toward Ana. Sticking out a hand. "Let's make up. Sound good?" Ana took some steps back.
"I-I... I just need to process this." He lowers his hand.
"Please, take your time." Ana sniffs. A small smile appearing on her petite lip.
"Thank you." My heart felt relased of the misery.
.....
.....
Khaki sat on the bed, his head laid on his hands. Lillian enters the room. "Honey, is something wrong?" She ask caringly.
"I'm just, scared for our daughter." Lillian strolls to him and sits next to her husband. Rubbing his back. "She's growing up so fast. It feels like yesterday when I was cuddling her in my arms." His arm wrap around his stomach. Lillian encases him in her small arms.
.....
"Another prey." Ravana whispers. Sitting in her chair, staring out at the large window. Her hand sways elegantly as purple slime appears. It falls to the ground as it crawls briskly to the victim. So fast it couldn't be seen by the naked eye.
She stood up, her face became blank. The woman raised her head. "Yes?"
Another man enter the room. "Ravana." He said. "You don't seem to happy."
Ravana strolls past him. Her heels making loud noises. "I'm just fine." She places her hand on the doorknob, "Now if you excuse me, I'll be eating dinner." The door shutting echos through the room. The man stares out the circle window. Clenching his fist.
.....
Slime crawls on the ground and onto Khaki's leg. Lillian notices and jumps away from him. "Khaki...?" The slime swallowed his whole body. Lillian yells. "Khaki! What happened to you!?" Khaki slowly stood up. His eyes glowed dark blue, but mostly of fear. "Snap out of it!"
The Phantom glared at her before strolling past her. "Your not the one I need." Lillian reaches and grabs his hand, slowly slime coats over her body and freezes her. The Phantom exits the house before running away.
.....
I jog toward Ana and bundle my arms around her body. Ana did the same. Her body was shaking a little. My heart beats leisurely. Embracing each other warmth. Leon place a hand on his hip as he smiles.
Screams suddenly shot into our ear. Ana and I pull away as the three of us turn toward the playground. Children were running as the Phantom approaches us. He laughs. "How I love the sound of screaming children." Leon and Marissa glares at the monster.
I stood in front of Ana, holding out my arm. "Run, Ana. He may harm you." Ana lowers my arm.
"I'm not sure about you two, but I'm protecting the kids!" The Phantom shot us a dirty look, as he transforms into his humongous form. Slowly, his arm raises; slime dripping from the bottom. Leon sprints out of the way.
I pushed Ana out of the way. Bother of us barely missed the attack. Ana stood back up and stood in front of me. "I won't let you hurt her!" The nearby arm rises as the other one swings toward her.
The next thing I knew, Ana and I were being carried by Leon. But his face was hidden by the hoodie and mask, while his body was concealed with his cloak. I wrap my arms around his neck before studying Ana. Her eyes her wide as her chin dropped. I hoped she didn't realize he was Leon.
Leon alights on ground with ease and gently places Ana to the flooring. She felt dizzy, falling on the earth. Leon's head rotates to me and smiles, my position changed to a bridal style. "Let's finish that Phantom." I nod. Leon begins dashing toward the Phantom, holding me tight enough.
Once we got close, Leon lets me down. Pulling out of the attire and handing it to me. "Ready?" I place these clothes over my body.
"Ready." Both of us sprint toward the monster. The Phantom shoots slime from his hands, We then lunge out of the way. Causing us to separate. One of the slimes was heading toward Leon. I used my hands as a microphone. "Leon! Catch!" Summoning my shield from thin air, I threw it toward him.
Leon catches it and blocks the attack. The Phantom shrinks into humanoid size. "What a bunch of delinquents you are. That's not how you treat your elders!" My heart raced fast, despite that the battle only started. But my breath was calm. The Phantom hastens toward me; instinctively I pivot myself to the side. Causing the Phantom to trip over.
"Marissa!" He shouts, throwing the shield back at me. My eyes grew widen as I grabbed the handle, confused as of why he would give it back. Looking back up, the Phantom was shooting slime at the weapon. I snapped back to reality and lowered my legs to keep balance. Leon's hands flared of flames as he jumps toward the monster.
My partner aims his attacks to the orb on his hip. But the Phantom evades out of the way. Leon then stands on his hands and swiftly revolves his legs; which were covered in blaze. The black cloak dances in the wind. Four kicks impacting his face, causing him to fall on his face. The shield disappears as I bolt to him and grab the orb. With a little bit a strength, the orb breaks in two. Slime crawls off Khaki's body as the orb vanishes. Khaki fell to the ground, holding his unsteady head.
Leon strips off the overwear as I did the same. I jog toward Leon's side and handed him the clothes. Leon placed the clothes on his hand and disappears. I approach my father and bend to his level. Placing a hand on his shoulder. "Are you okay?" Khaki gazed at me.
"Marissa...." He blinks a couple times. "Where... how?"
Leon strolls next to me. "You were up sleepwalking and came here. Me, Marissa, and Ana were hanging out." I blinked multiple times by the lie. It scared me how well he could deceit. Khaki stood up and brushed off his clothes.
"Ah, I tend to do that." Leon scratched the back of his head. Khaki regards me, smiling. "I should head back home. Lillian's probably worried about me." He begins jogging past us, and toward the exit. "See ya!"
"Bye!" I shout, waving back. Leon looks down at me.
"That's your father?" I nod. "He's a pretty cool guy." We then heard footsteps behind us. Turning out heads, we spotted a girl with brown ponytail, black and white stripped shirt, and a emerald colored skirt.
"Hey Ana!" I wave. She waves back with a smile before approaching us.
"Hi guys." She greets tiredly. "I'm going to head home, for someone I feel a little dizzy. I'll see you two tomorrow." Leon waves.
"See ya." Ana exit the place as well. Looking around, no one was here except us. Only the crickets made noise. Leon and I decided to head back home, as their was nothing left to do.
