Chapter 2 | The Battle
She gripped onto my neck tight. I felt waterfalls pouring from my eyes.
"H-help." I choked.
Without warning, the guy aimed his fireball at the enemy. She finally let me go of me, dodging the attack the guy did. The brute ran away. "I'll make sure you two will be in hell!" The monster vowed.
"Shoot, it got away." The guy commented. Looking at the buildings and the loud sirens noises flying around the scared city. His fireball disappeared from his hand.
I was happy she let me go, but I still felt the pain in my throat. I coughed hard, my hands holding onto my neck, looking down at the grass below me. What just happend?
The guy walked toward me. Bending down to my level. "We need to get going." He said. The guy looked at me, I looked at him. A little displeased that he was wearing a mask and hoodie, I would like to see his face.
I was slowly getting my breathe back. "Are you alright?" The boy asked, I simply nodded. He tried to pick me up, but I crawled away. I was afraid he was going to hurt me. "Who.... are you? And what was that thing?" I finally asked.
The guy stayed in place, with his hands out. Knead on one leg. It took him awhile to snap back into reality.
He then smiled. "I'm Leon, your partner in crime." I jumped back. I forgot all about my breathe as he said that.
"Parenter in crime!?" I exclaimed.
Leon standed up, helping me up as well. My legs were still wobbly from the frightening moment. I held onto Leon's arms as he held onto mine. I noticed his hood feel off, his mask as well.
His untamed orange hair was pointy upward. But not too spiky. His blue eyes was gleaming against the blue light. But his clothes was still covered by the black cloth, though there was scratch marks on it.
"I have to explain later. Right now we have to stop that beast." He turned his head to the creature. That was back into it's larger gooey form. He put back on his hood and mask.
Leon started to pull on my arm. I almost tripped over, but caught my balance. I didn't want to do this. "No, stop! Let me go!!" I yelled, pulling my arm back hard. "Why do I have to do this?" I was trembling.
He could see the pain in my eyes, like a open window. "I'm sorry, I tend to rush into things. I'll explain as we head to the creature." Leon apologized. "Your part of a organization called the M.A.D., or you could call it Magic and Demons." Our hands intertwined.
"In the organization, you have magic in order to fight demons to protect the earth. We must deafet phantoms, which was the monster that attacked you. Also, we also get our own partners." Leon smiled at me. I slightly smiled back. My fears were still there, creeping behind me. But I kept my stand, trying to be strong.
"So, that monster is called a phantom, and we have to get rid of it?" He nodded. Leon started jogging, I followed. Still holding his hand.
"I'll make sure your safe, you won't be harmed." I felt a bit more confident. Leon started running faster, I followed close behind.
"Thank you, Leon. I'll try to help out as much as I can." I had to put a strong face. I was still scared deep down. But I didn't let me control me.
He pulled me forward and carried me bridal style. "Hang on tight!" I quickly held onto his shoulders, covering my face on his chest. I felt the hard wind against the back of my head. It ruffled my skit and blue shirt hard. I heard his feet hit bricks hard, then jumped up again.
I turned my head forward. We were jumping on roofs. I held on tighter, Leon noticed. "Are you scared?" He laughed a little. "That's kinda funny."
"I'm still trying to get used to this power thing you know!" I yelled. Leon chuckled.
"And you see the monster over there, the one we ran into?" I looked around. It didn't take me long to find it.
"Yeah, I see it."
"Don't touch it's aura. It will keep you frozen in its slime." Leon defined.
Leon landed to the ground with a thumb! He then let me down gently. We were near the monster itself. We could hear it's loud screeching.
Both of us covered our ears. It was shaking the ground by it's loudness. Though it finally stopped. I looked up at the night sky, then back down to Leon.
"Here, take this." He summoned a long black cloth, including a hoodie, and a mask. I grabbed it, examining the clothes he gave me. "What do I need this for?" I looked back up at him.
"This organization is a secret one. Normal civilians can't find out powers exist." I already knew why. So without question, I put it on.
"I'll distract the phantom, you make sure the civilians run away from here as far as possible." I nodded. I ran toward the scared people as Leon ran toward the dark ceature.
"Hey, monster!" He yelled. That definitely caught her attention. She turned around and swinged her slimy arm Leon's way. But he jumped into the air, summoning a medium sized fireball. He threw it briskly at the monster.
It hit the slime, creating a large hole through the creature. The spear slightly missed some sort of ball inside the gunk beast.
"Damn, almost had him." He whispered. He summoned another fireball and threw it at the orb, almost hit but didn't. The hole in the monster filled up it's hole quickly, Leon then landed safely on his feet. He continued to throw fireballs at the same place as before, jumping high in the air with every throw. They were close, but not close enough. Leon didn't give up, he continued on. Despite his heavy panting and his bones yelling for him to stop, he carried forward.
I was gently pushing ladies, men, and children the opposite direction of the fight in a straight, big line. I took off my mask so I wouldn't look too suspicious, yet people seemed to try to stay away. At least they're moving in a straight line. Some-- most civilians were running away. But it was hard to focus when I couldn't take my eyes off the two. "Wow." I whispered. "So this is what a fight with magic looks like." I didn't notice, but I was pushing too hard. And accidentally pushed a little girl to the ground.
The kid started to bawl. Her mother bended down to her level, she gently put her baby boy to the ground and picked up her daughter. I guess she couldn't carry two kids at once. She looked angry at me, I turned scared. "What are you doing to my child!?" She asked in a loud tone.
I jumped in fear. "I'm sorry miss, I-I didn't mean too!" I quickly explained. Frantically waving my hands back and fourth.
Little did we, or anyone know, that the little boy as slowly walking toward the phantom. "Monster cool!" The phantom looked down at the kid, ignoring Leon trying to attack her.
The mother finally looked away from me. She looked horrified. "Where's my baby boy!?" People started looking at us. I turned my head, both the mother and I was looking at the boy alarmed.
The monster fired a large slimeball from her mouth, aiming straight at the kid. Leon turned his head toward the baby, he couldn't move as fast in air. The mother was frozen in place.
"I won't let you hurt him!" I jumped in front of the boy, blocking the slime from doing any damage. I closed my eyes, thinking the goo would just gobble me up.
Unexpectedly, my necklace started to glimmer. I gasped, a black shield covered me and the child, it was see through surprisingly. I then fell on the ground, the slime was a feet away. Extremely close.
"Use your shield to reflect it back!" Leon yelled. It snapped me back to reality. I blinked a couple times, still trying to process everything. My legs and arms wobbled as I standed back on my feet. I grabbed onto the handle and hit the slimeball as hard as I could.
"What!?" I was surpised. My hit barely did anything! It did start moving the other way, but not going as fast as I thought. It was moving slower and slower. The shield disappeared into sparkles.
Leon jumped near the ball. His cape flying in the air. His hoodie ruffled, showing his gleaming blue eyes. "Nice job!" His blazed fireball was in hand. Leon was flying next to the ball, aiming at the monster. "Take this!" He hit the slimeball with the fireball. And he hit hard. The ball went much faster then before, it was engulfed in flames. A enraging fireball.
It went through the monster once more. But this time, there was another huge hole in the dark creature, and he shot the orb inside. The slime departed from each other, it then disappeared. All that was left was the orb it had. Leaving Ana laying on the ground, she didn't have any marks or bruises. But looked weak.
I was panting, what a rush. My hair was messy, but I didn't care. The mother ran toward her baby as I ran toward my friend. "Ana!" I cried. Running to her side. I forgot that I was still wearing my mask and hoodie. As much as a cape, not creepy at all. Leon was watching all the civilians, the monster was gone, along with the orb inside. The civilians were cheering, happy to still be alive.
"Maris-" She stopped her sentence with a terrified expression. She crawled away from me. "S-stay away!" Her arms trembled. I was about to pull down my mask and hoodie, but Leon placed his hand on my shoulder, shaking his head. Some people spotted us as well, they started running toward us.
I only sighed, standing up. "Be safe ma'am." I waved. Leon and I ran away, I didn't look back. I didn't want to leave Ana hurt. The citizens slowly started to surround Ana, asking her a lot of questions. Ana didn't seem to like it.
We hid behind a building, and took our capes, mask, and hoodies off. I was still slightly panting. "That was a wild ride." I said. I was relieved that we finally got to take the clothes off.
Leon on the other hand, looked overjoyed. "That's exactly why I love it! And you did a great job out there with that little boy." He complimented.
I smiled at him. "Thanks! Though I still can't believe I jumped in front of him." I was thinking of how much danger I put myself into, but everything turned out to be ok.
Leon giggled slightly. "Saving people from destruction can have a lot of good advantageous to it. Like reflexes for example." Then looked at my quartz necklace. "Also, your necklace, it seems to have powers." I jumped a little by the idea.
I wanted to change the subject, I needed room to think about what I'm doing. "Um, Leon. Can we talk about this later, I need a breather from all this." He looked up to my face. Then nodded.
"Lets chat later, um." Leon waited for me to respond.
"Marissa."
"Pretty name. See you later Marissa!" The clothes he was holding disappeared. The orange themed boy started to run away with a smile on his face. He waved goodbye as I waved back.
I then briskly turned around, and started running toward my friend. "Ana!" The girl looked tired. She was wearing a long sleeves black and white striped crop top with an emerald green mini skirt. Including a white bow which was holding in her coffee ponytail, and white ballerina shoes. Well, it was hard to even see her because there was a large crowd.
I couldn't reach her, I was too short. I called her name again, she finally looked my way. I was waving my hands in the air, as she tried to push throw the crowd of people. Citizens her watching her as she did, Ana threw her arms around me without saying a word. A hugged her back, but she was still burning up.
"Ana, your too weak. We have to take you home." I commented. I grabbed her arm and placed it over my shoulders. People still tried to follow.
"Hey, we still have questions for the lady!" One man yelled.
"Where has this beauty been our whole lives!?"
I looked back at the crowd of people angrily. "Hiding from your ugly asses!" I yelled back at them. I looked at Ana, whispering. "Such connards." Ana giggled from my comment.
(Connard in French means asshole.)
"Marissa, your speaking French again." I was a bit surprised she could talk. But I shook it off.
The rest of the walk was silent. No one spoke. Ana didn't speak a word, not a noise even. The moon still up, the stars floating above. Inhale, exhale.
I looked up. "It's a quiet night, and such a beautiful one." I whispered.
~~~~~~~~
I brought her to my house and gently sat the weak girl on my bed. She fell asleep. Lightly snoring.
I sat next to my friend on the bed. "What a day."
