Chapter 16 | Bangin' Ice Cream
I jogged past people, the wind whipping my hair back from my face. I held the half water bottle in my hand. Mom gave me the idea to start running in the mornings, and so, it was what I decided to do.
I conclude my jog before regaining my breath. Sucking in heavy breaths of air. My ears picked up the sound of jogging coming closer, until the person stopped next to me. "Hey, Marissa." I rotate my head to spot Leon's older sister, Madison. "Out for a jog?"
I nod. "It's good exercise. I really need it." I took a sip of water. "Where are you heading off to?"
"To Lilith's. Every Saturday, we go to the same ice cream store to eat ice cream." She explains. It must have been something similar to tradition. Although I was a little confused, why she would hangout with Lilith. Even though she's been a bit rude. It deeply peeked my interest. "Want to join?"
Well speak of the devil. "Sure!"
Her house was only a couple blocks down. Madison knocks on the door. But instead of Lilith, it was her mother. "Oh, what brings you here, Maddy?" She questions.
"I came to meet up with Lilith. I'm guessing she's not here, huh." She chuckles. Placing a hand on her hip.
"She did say that she went to her, 'special place'. Wherever that might be." With those words, Madison's face lit up like a flash lit. Her mouth alters into a grin, as her eyes widen. "But it seems you know where that is." I cock an eyebrow. Special place? Now I'm really curious.
Madison rotates toward me. "C'mon, Marissa! Follow me!" She shouts. Abruptly Madison seized my wrist and drags me down the sidewalk. Due to this, I almost tripped. But I was able to regain some balance.
"How do you know where it is?"
"Her special place is practically- no, is her utopia." She explains. "She showed me when I was twenty-two."
"How old are you now?"
"I'm twenty-five. Also, you should never ask a lady her age. It's rude." I nod, scratching my head.
I then heard footsteps easily catching up to us. I turn my head to spot my friend jogging toward us. "Mind if I join?" Ana questions.
"Ana! I didn't expect to see you here."
"I was taking a stroll until I saw you two running. I'll take it that you don't mind." I laughed at her attitude.
...
We concluded our running in front of the Arc de Triomphe. It's a large building with four legs holding itself up. There's statues on the walls with four people and a fifth one with wings. Flying above the four. I never knew the history was the building, and I plan to never learn it.
Madison sprints toward the building, her arms out wide. "Lilith!" She exclaims, jumping toward the woman. But in a swift movement, Lilith takes a step to the side. Causing Madison to fall to the floor, face first.
Ana and I jog toward them. "Well, that happened." I comment.
Lilith crosses her arms, then examines us. But longer than required. Ana clears her throat. "I'm Anna, Ana for short. This is my friend, Marissa." I wave, but our eyes weren't meeting each other's. Lilith then looks down at her body, then sighs. Ana takes a step behind me. Probably feeling a little creeped out.
Madison stood back up and brushed the dirt off her clothes. She quickly changed the subject, pointing to the ice cream truck. "Look! There's the usual ice cream guy!" Madison seizes on Lilith's hand, Lilith's eyes widen as a bit of blood rushes to her cheek. Madison dashes toward the ice cream stand.
"There she goes again." I said. I begin strolling to them, but was stopped by Ana grabbing my wrist. I look back at her. "What's faux?"
Small tears came from her eyes, but I could tell they were fake tears. "I feel loved." She said. I chuckled. I saunter toward Madison and Lilith, Ana still holding on my wrist. Madison's body was droopy, her arms around her body. Lilith pats her back.
The ice cream guy bends on his stand. "Wait, your the YouTube singer, right?"
Madison perks her head right up. "Yup! Still over a million views on my first video!"
I cock an eyebrow. "Lilith, what does he mean?"
"It's... kinda how we meet." She pokes her cheeks. "Her video exploded, and I saw it." She was interrupted by Madison's grieving.
The ambience was very noticeable, due to her moping. Madison saunters away. "I'm going to head to the bathroom to continue moping."
"Madison," Lilith comments. She jogs after her, reaching for her hand. "Wait-" But before she could reach her, slime envelops her body. Lilith fell to the ground due to losing her balance. Our eyes widen as Madison takes on a different form. This time, her hair alters into a long pointy Mohawk. A black guitar appears wrapped around her, the design with purple slime on it. Her face was white while wearing a short black jacket.
Ana jogs toward Lilith and helps her up. "You need to get out of here." She was very reluctant, but stood up and ran the opposite way. The pick strum the chords, causing a rock n' roll sound to come off it. The waves entered the ears of citizens, and out of nowhere they start to bang their heads. Everyone evacuates the area.
My eyes widen. "She's like some rock star!"
The Phantom points toward me. "You bet, baby! I'm gonna to rock your world!" She begins to play in the instrument once again, the sound waves aiming for both Ana and I. I picked up the brunette and jumped high in the sky. Ana bundles her arms around my neck and held on closely.
Our eyes meet. Ana grins. "Go get 'em, Marissa." The simple comment made my confidence skyrocket. I landed to the ground, gently placing my friend to the ground.
I summon my shield, sauntering to the Phantom. "Whatever you do, don't make me look bad. Ana's watching me, and if I mess up she won't let me forget it."
"That depends, if your really bad at fighting. Then it'll be your fault!" She aims the sounds waves toward me. I sprint toward it and bounce right above it, coming straight toward the Phantom. I threw my shield to its head. It was too late before she could react, and was hit on the head. I swiftly came in and punched the Phantom on the nose. She releases the guitar and falls to the ground. I was barely able to catch myself. I landing on my hands and land on my butt.
Luckily, I alighted next to my shield. Ana uses her hands as a microphone. "Are you okay!?" I gave a thumbs up. Ana exhales a breath.
The Phantom quickly stands up, holding on her guitar. "I'll be going for you now!" She shouts, turning toward Ana. "Get ready for an encore!" Ana takes a couple steps back.
The weapon disappears. I clench my fist and hasten toward the monster. As the Phantom was about to send his attack, I elbow her neck. Stepping a foot in between the Phantom's legs. "Hands off!" The monster rotates herself and shoots the sound waves. Impacting me heavily. I stagger backwards and wince. Metal and rock music filling my mind. Before I knew it, I was banging my head hardcore.
Ana covers her mouth. The Phantom smiles. "I actually kinda liked her." She turns toward the brunette. "Now it's your turn!" Ana clenches her teeth and hands.
"I won't forgive you.... for hurting my friend!" She yells. The ground begins to shake. The Phantom looks down at the earth and loses her balance. Falling to the ground.
"Is this an earthquake!?" Ana holds out two fingers and sways them in a eight-formation. Pillars of rock comes up from the ground, surrounding the Phantom. The Phantom shivers, her eyes widening. Ana ambles toward the monster and examines her.
I gasped by the rocks. I couldn't see a thing, but I knew she was probably near the Phantom. "Grab the orb, and break it in half!" I screamed.
Ana reaches for the orb and breaks it. The slime crawls away from her body. The rock pillars went back into the ground. And I finally stopped headbanging. My neck was starting to hurt. Madison rubs her head, while I rubbed my neck. "Marissa!" Ana shouts, running and jumping toward me. My eyes widen as I fell to the ground. Ana bundles her arms around me tightly. She then looks me in the eyes, her hands on my shoulders. "Were you hurt? I'll take care of it immediately!" She claims.
I quickly shake my head. "No, no, Anna. It's fine." I smile at her. She was always caring, and made an adorable puppy face when worried for other people.
Madison stood up and jogs toward us. Scrutinizing the position we were in. "I didn't know you two were like that." Instantly blood rushes to my cheeks. Ana quickly stands up and helps me up.
"It's not like that." I quickly explain. "We're simply friends." Ana nods.
...
...
The four of us sat at the chair. Madison was devouring her vanilla ice cream. While Lilith had her strawberry ice cream. Due to Ana's small appetite, we shared from the same bowl of chocolate ice cream. Madison pumps the air. "This is the greatest!" She regards us. "I love hanging out with you guys." Ana and I smiled.
Lilith seizes her napkin. "Madison, stay still." She places her hand on Madison's shoulder, leaning closer to her face. Madison shift glances anywhere than Lilith's eyes. Lilith wipes the ice cream on her cheek. "There was ice cream on your cheek."
Ana blinks in realization. She stared at the adults, her petite lips pressing against each other. I tap her shoulder, which made her jump. "Ann, are you feelin' alright?"
She quickly nods. "Yeah! I'm just fine." Ana exhales a nervous chuckle.
