Chapter 03: Tale of Solus

"During the first year of the Clone Wars, I was part of a mission to Mygeeto," Solus explained. "Because of what transpired, all records of it were removed, officially making it an event that never happened. As I said, I was still a Jedi named Tira, and I was too much of a trusting fool."

Years earlier...

The blocky shape of the cargo hauler dropped through the thick gray of the brooding storm clouds hanging low over the spires of Mygeeto. Lightning flickered within a few of the clouds, followed by a rumbling of distant thunder. Dust kicked up from the landing pad as the engines of the cargo ship blasted its surface during touchdown.

As workers, heavily guarded by the mechanical ranks of the droid armies occupying Mygeeto, began unloading crates of supplies, two figures slipped quietly out a side hatch and vanished unseen down a service ladder on the rear of the landing platform. Hidden under gray robes, hoods, and matching cloth wraps of their hands and faces, the two intruders looked nothing like the Jedi they were.

Once down the ladder, the pair ducked into a maintenance utility tunnel crammed with refueling pipes, power transfer conduits, and fire suppression systems. The taller of the two by nearly a foot turned to regard his shorter companion.

"Tira," the man said in a deep and robust voice. "I want you to remember we're here on a scouting mission only. We're not to engage the enemy if it can be avoided."

"I won't let you down, Master Hallis," Tira promised. Like her teacher, her voice was muffled by the wrappings covering her face, but nothing could keep the clouds of white vapor from filtering through the cloth and into the frigid air when she spoke.

Descending into the unused sections of the utility tunnel system, the two Jedi scouts navigated a labyrinth of passages. The small mapping devices strapped to their forearms were the only things keeping them from becoming hopelessly lost. Although their ultimate objective was to reach a relay station for the droid armies in order to learn their deployment across Mygeeto, the Jedi never reached their destination.

The floor under Tira collapsed when she put her weight on the deck plating, dropping her into the darkness of a concealed shaft. Using the Force, she was able to land safely if not comfortably. Looking around, her eyes widened in surprise over what she'd discovered.

"Master, you really need to see this for yourself," Tira yelled up the shaft to him.

"Stand aside," Hallis instructed. When she moved, Hallis dropped down to join her on the lower level. His greater years of experience and mastery of the Force allowed him to make the landing appear easy.

Positioned in front of the two Jedi was a massive computer system. Conduits and bundles of cable snaked out in all directions on the floor and walls. Shelves underneath the primary console interface were lined with red and black pyramids.

"Are those Sith holocrons?" Tira questioned while pointing at the palm sized pyramids filling the shelves.

"It would appear so," Hallis answered. He held out a hand toward the computer and its surroundings. "I can sense the Dark Side here, but it's old, like a faint echo. I don't think anyone has been here in many years."

"I wonder what it's all for," Tira pondered out loud.

Carefully eyeing the computer for traps or other defensive measures, Hallis switched on the machine. One of the holocrons had been inserted into a specially designed slot with its uppermost point locked into appropriately shaped port. As the computer powered up, the holocron was accessed, displaying the relevant information on the large data screen above the console.

"Master, are you reading this?" Tira whispered when she saw the information appear on screen.

"It would seem the Sith who used this terminal was working on a computer virus to turn all droids into weapons," Hallis replied. "The virus overrides their programming and turns them hostile to everyone except other droids."

"This room seems rather old and unused," Tira pointed out. "I don't think the Sith is coming back for it."

"Let's hope not," Hallis agreed. "We'll need to take this back to the Jedi Council and let them decide what to do with it."

"Why don't we use it?" Tira suggested. "If the battle droids turned on their masters, it would severely hamper the Separatists' ability to hold Mygeeto."

"A Sith wrote this program," Hallis countered. "There's no telling what other nasty things were encoded, or what the droids might do to the population after they're done with the Separatists. We'll take the holocrons back with us and destroy the computer. We can't have this falling into the wrong hands, and we still have work here to do."

Present day...

"We finished our scouting mission and escaped unseen with a supply of Sith holocrons," Solus related to Koy'itar.

"I take it the Jedi never used the virus program," Koy'itar assumed, idly flipping one of her green headtails over her shoulder.

"No," Solus confirmed. "They wanted nothing to do with something made by a Dark Side user. They ordered the holocrons destroyed and all records of our mission erased. The Council further wanted no mention to be made of what we'd found. The galaxy's reliance on droids could cause mass panic if people began to believe the droids could be compromised."

"Did you agree to this?" Koy'itar prompted.

"I did," Solus confirmed. "I told you I was a trusting fool back then. The Clone Wars continued month after bloody month with the casualty reports getting longer as time went on. Always, in the back of my mind, was the thought it could've been stopped if we'd used the virus. I trusted the Jedi Council and tried to fight on, but less than a year after our mission to Mygeeto, my master was killed by the Separatists."
