Chapter 01: Retrieval
The Jedi Temple was heavily guarded, but it didn't present a problem for someone with determination and the right equipment, and the green skinned Twi'lek Koy'itar had both. She approached the building from the side because she knew the majority of security would be around the doors where access was direct, so no one would be watching the solid walls of the structure and her more indirect route.
Like all buildings on Coruscant, the Jedi Temple extended far below the area where the main entrances were located. The entire planet was covered in a single, immense city, and the foundations went down into the shadowy depths where one building joined another in a solid mass of overlapping support structures.
Gaining access in the lower levels was just as difficult as through the main entrances as guards were positioned at every junction between buildings. However, the higher up the building extended into the sky, the less security Koy'itar had to contend with as the Jedi felt secure in their overall defenses.
Koy'itar smiled as she parked her transport on a landing pad nearby and looked up at the lofty spire. Traffic was passing at its usually slow pace in the air lanes around the Temple and the other towers of the city, but her lower altitude caused them to pass her by unnoticed.
Her eyes, a more intense shade of green than her skin, looked over the impressive building for a moment. When she found nothing out of the ordinary, she removed the goggles from her forehead and settled them over her eyes, scanning the temple with enhanced optics for good measure.
When satisfied no one was prepared to oppose her immediately, she drew the ascension gun from the holster slung low on the curve of her hip and fired a harpoon with trailing cable toward an overhang. The harpoon dug into the stone with a soft thump no one would've been able to hear inside the building. Activating the recoil feature on her gun, Koy'itar was pulled off the ground and sent speeding up the side of the Jedi Temple. Her ride came to a stop where the harpoon held firm.
Digging into the small pouch on her right leg, she removed a magnetic tether and attached it to a vent cover and the wall it protruded from. Using a laser cutter she produced from a different pouch, she cut through the bolts securing the cover in place. The metal plate fell away when the last of the bolts were severed, but the magnetic tether caused it to swing down underneath like a pendulum.
Kicking off the wall, Koy'itar built up momentum until she was able to swing up and into the vent. Detaching the cable from the ascension gun, she left the harpoon where it was and crawled through the narrow confines of the vent shaft. Since vents of the type she currently edged her way through were designed for the moving of air and nothing else, they lacked the proper structure to support the weight of a person, even a person with the slender frame of Koy'itar. The shaft she'd chosen to use for her unorthodox entry into the Jedi Temple went through one of the power rooms and rested atop a generator's bulky exterior shielding. Acting as a crutch, the generator and its shielding gave the much needed support to the vent and allowed her to enter the Temple without breaking through and crashing to the floor.
Once beyond the power room, Koy'itar found the nearest vent cover and paused behind it. Switching to a thermal view on her goggles, she checked the outside hallway to be sure no one was near enough to see her leave the vent. Satisfied, Koy'itar used her laser cutter and removed the cover, gliding out into the hallway and setting the cover back in place in a single, fluid motion.
Walking down the corridor as if she had business there, she removed a datapad from a large pouch on the outside of her left leg. She pretended to be looking at the information on the pad, trying to give the impression of being on an important errand if anyone should take notice of her. Because security was so heavy at the entrances, it was expected to deal with all threats before they got inside. As a result, security within the Jedi Temple was almost nonexistent. The Jedi were trusted, as were the people they let in, so no real precautions had been put in place for intruders, allowing Koy'itar to progress unchallenged toward her destination.
Turning the corner, she arrived at a small office. Three tall shelves covered the walls and were filled with precarious stacks of holodisks threatening to spill over sideways if bumped. A desk was crammed in the corner with even more of the gleaming holodisks scattered across the smooth and glossy white surface.
Koy'itar ignored the desk and the shelves to either side of her, going straight ahead to the shelf directly opposite of the door she'd entered through. On the second level from the top, she began a search of the various holodisks, picking them up and checking the numbers and letters printed on their edges to see which one was the disk she was looking for. Twice, a stack threatened to fall over, but her quick reflexes allowed her to catch them.
Eventually, she found one labeled J983 – Maintenance and Storage Protocols. Nodding with satisfaction, Koy'itar hid the disk in one of her pockets and headed for the exit, her mission in the Jedi Temple complete.
When she neared the vent leading back outside, a trio of Jedi launched themselves from an upper balcony and landed in front and to either side of her. Clad in white and trimmed in gold, the Temple guards each carried a yellow bladed lightsaber currently active and humming loudly.
"You're not going anywhere, Thief," the lead guard said from behind his mask.
