Chapter 09: Bits and Pieces
"Set coordinates for a jump to Nantoon then head for Takodana," Han told Chewie.
"I thought you wanted to go the Republic base in the Ileenium system," Rey mentioned to Poe.
"We can't go there directly," Han answered before Poe had a chance to respond. He spoke over his shoulder while powering up the hyperdrive. "I have a meeting I need to get to, and there's still one Star Destroyer in this system. If it sees us leave, they'll be able to calculate possible destinations based on our course. We need to leave the system and make a jump in a different direction from there.
"Oh," Rey said. "May I ask, was your ship supposed to come apart and explode like that?"
He didn't answer immediately as he was busy. Pulling back on a trio of levers simultaneously, he engaged the hyperdrive. The stars outside the cockpit window turned into long streaks of light as the ship accelerated to lightspeed and jumped into hyperspace.
"The First Order has been raiding shipping in this sector for some time," Han explained, turning his chair around to face her. "They've been avoiding a direct attack against our fleet, so the Republic wanted an alternate means to engage them. Chewie and I came up with this, but I'm more interested in what's so special about you."
Rey reached into the bag she carried and pulled out a portable holoprojector. The palm sized disk of metal hummed slightly as she toggled the activation switch with her thumb. Beams of translucent blue light streamed upward for a moment before adjusting their angle to form an image of Sentis above the device.
"Rey," the projection of Sentis began. "If you're playing this message, I've failed in some way and am not around to tell you these things personally. First off, our meeting on Jakku wasn't an accident. I wasn't just an old man you happened to befriend. I was asked by your father to watch over you, training and protecting you until the time was right. He never told me why or when your time would come. He could be frustratingly vague at times, but he was the best friend I'd ever known, so when he asked for a favor, I couldn't refuse him."
The image held up a small pyramid in his left hand.
"This should also be among the items I left for you," Sentis explained.
Rey paused the recording in order to dig through the bag and find the pyramid. Dark blue with elegant details in gleaming gold, the device felt alive with power as it sat in her hand. She didn't have the slightest clue what it might be, so she unpaused the recording.
"This is a Jedi holocron," Sentis's projection told her. "There are many types of holocrons, and this one requires a Force user to open it. I never had your father's gift, so I couldn't open it for you or give you the training in the Force you will undoubtedly require. Find someone skilled in the Force; they can help you. The holocron contains many things, but one in particular is a message from your father. He might explain things better than I have. It was my intention to tell you everything when we left Jakku, but when the First Order arrived, I knew I might not survive, so I'm making this recording instead. I hope I survive to see you again someday, and perhaps you can find it in your heart to forgive me for not telling you about your past sooner. I'm sorry, Rey. I'm so sorry."
The beams of light shifted out of position, dispersing the hologram before deactivating entirely.
Restricted Scene Summary – Here is where BB-8 shows the map and everyone discusses what happened to Luke. In the movie, Han explains that one of Luke's Jedi students turned against him and destroyed it all, but how would anyone know that? Ben Solo became Kylo Ren and went off to join the First Order and Snoke. Luke was the only survivor, and he left without saying a word, vanishing to who-knows-where. And, R2-D2 went into low power mode. That's everyone, and none of them are talking about what happened, so how does anyone else know?
It's possible with Leia's connection to the Force, they might have known something happened, but it wouldn't have given them a complete record. When Alderaan was destroyed by the Death Star, Obi-wan felt a disturbance in the Force. He feared something terrible had happened, but he didn't know what until they arrived at the debris field where the planet had formerly been.
In the changed version, they don't know what happened or even the true identity of Kylo.
The next scene is with Snoke, Hux, and Kylo discussing how the droid and its information slipped through their fingers.
In the movie, Hux wants to use the weapon to destroy the Republic. The First Order blows away the Hosnian system and apparently breaks the entire Republic with one hit. How does the destruction of a single star system eliminate a galaxy wide government? They couldn't have had all their ships, bases, and people in one system, so I inserted this line from Snoke.
"They've had decades to build since the fall of the Empire," Snoke countered. "They will not be so easily removed, even by a weapon of such power. Nevertheless, it will damage them significantly, weakening them for our full invasion. Go. Oversee preparations."
The chapter ends with the meeting with Maz, but why does everyone automatically recognize BB-8? He's not the only BB unit in the galaxy, but both Resistance and First Order spies instantly know this is the droid they're looking for.
I changed the scene from certain recognition to only a possibility worthy of being investigated, and I think it makes more sense. Here's the altered version -
Observant eyes took note of the visitors and the droid rolling along the floor. With fluid grace, one of the patrons slipped quietly and unnoticed out a side door where she wouldn't be seen taking a commlink from her belt.
"A Republic pilot and a BB droid are here," she reported in an alien dialect. "They're with Han Solo. They may be the ones being sought after. Inform the First Order."
