Chapter 08: Dangerous Cargo

Author's Note: I couldn't figure out why Han would be transporting rathtars. The tentacle monsters cause massacres, so the only reason to deliver them alive would be for their killing powers to be used. The buyer wants a massacre causing monster. Why would Han Solo, hero of the Alliance, be involved in such an endeavor? I don't think he would be, so I removed the rathtars completely and gave Han a different mission.

I noticed a slight plot hole when the two gangs came onboard. They'd tracked Han's cargo ship from another star system, but how could they have gotten to Han first? What happened to Kylo Ren's ship? The Star Destroyer had been above the planet, even landed stormtroopers and launched TIE fighters to attack the surface, but when the Falcon reached orbit, the Star Destroyer was gone. Strange.

Eliminating the gangs and monsters, and putting the First Order back in orbit where they should be, the new version, after their ship is scooped up by the larger vessel and they're boarded, goes like this...

Poe, Finn, and BB-8 waited in the dark while Rey dug into the ship's components in an attempt to unleash the poisonous gas. The wrench Rey had been using slipped off the valve she was trying to loosen, and it clanked loudly against a metal support strut. Everyone held their breath, hoping they hadn't been heard. Suddenly, the covering plate of the maintenance pit was lifted up, blinding the group with the abrupt increase in light.

A white-haired man in a loose vest over a white shirt stood at the edge of the pit, looking down at the huddled group, blaster in hand. Waiting behind him with a bowcaster was the tall and imposing form of a Wookiee. Covered in long hair the color of brown tree bark, the Wookiee looked ready to fire should anyone threaten the man he stood behind.

"Poe Dameron?" a man asked in apparent surprise. He holstered the blaster he had previously been pointing in their direction. "What in blazes are you doing on this ship? I'd heard you'd been captured."

"General Solo," Poe said. "It's good to see you again."

"I'm not a General anymore," Solo corrected. "Haven't been a General for years. Call me Han."

"Alright, Han," Poe accepted. He gestured toward Finn and Rey. "I was captured by the First Order. Finn helped me escape. Rey and a friend of hers put together this ship and offered us a ride."

"Where's the friend?" Han asked.

"He didn't make it," Poe answered.

"He's still alive," Rey insisted. "We need to go back for him."

"The First Order will still be in the area," Finn countered.

"Hold on," Han interrupted. "Does the First Order know you're on this ship?"

"We did have to shoot our way out," Poe admitted.

"Then they'll be looking for you," Han concluded. "We've got to get out of here. Come on, Chewie."

Han ran down the tail ramp and back into his own vessel with the Wookiee following behind him.

Poe waved to the others, encouraging them to follow. Finn heaved BB-8 up and out of the pit, clamoring out immediately afterwards. The three people and droid hurried to catch up with Han and Chewie, but the pair had managed to gain such a lead, they were forced to rely on BB-8's sensors in order to know which way to go in the maze of corridors and identical passages.

"Just in time," Han told them as they entered the bridge. "There's a transmission coming through."

"Rey, are you reading me?" the voice of Sentis said through the forward console.

"Sentis!" Rey answered happily. "Are you alright?"

"For the moment," he told her. "I managed to get to a transmitter, but the First Order is still all over the place."

"We'll swing by and pick you up," Rey offered. "What's your location?"

"Never mind about me," Sentis dismissed. "They're not looking for an old man. They're looking for their prisoner and the deserter who helped him escape. If they learn about you, they'll be after you too. Get as far from Jakku as you can."

"Why would they be after me?" Rey asked.

"I left a small bag on the ship," Sentis told her. "There are a couple of items in there that should explain things better than I have time for now. Whatever happens, don't let the First Order find them; your life may depend upon it. I have to go, gotta keep moving. Take care."

The transmission abruptly ended.

"Who are you?" Han asked, looking directly at Rey.

"Nobody," she answered.

"The First Order never changed its targeting priorities for a nobody," Han reminded. "If they think you're important, then you are."

"I'm telling you, I don't know," Rey insisted forcibly.

"Go get those items he mentioned," Han told her. "We're breaking orbit. Hopefully, we'll be in hyperspace before the First Order comes looking."

The large cargo ship trembled as a series of turbo laser shots slammed into the hull.

"So much for that idea," Han grumbled.

Taking the controls, he increased power to the engines and tried to outpace the larger capital ship.

Chewie growled something in his native language.

"Right," Han agreed. "Drop cargo pod four. Now."

Chewie pushed a button on the console, and the last cargo module on the tail of the ship detached. Independent jets mounted on the pod fired and removed any lingering inertia, making the pod slow to a stop in space.

When the pursuing Star Destroyer passed near the cargo pod, Han pressed a button and detonated the charge inside. The resulting explosion of ionic power blanketed the massive warship in disruptive energy. Its systems flickered and shut off, and it started to turn off course as it was completely out of control.

Han steered away from the temporarily disabled enemy cruiser, but the blaster impacts continued. Chewie said something only Han could understand.

"Where did the other one come from?" Han demanded. "Never mind, prepare to drop the cargo."

Han swiveled his chair around to face his new passengers. "If there's anything on that ship of yours you want to take, you had best get it now. That Star Destroyer's going to start pulling us in with a tractor beam at any time, and we're abandoning ship."

Rey sprinted back toward the craft she and Sentis had spent so long building. She tore through the storage compartments until she found a satchel tagged with her name. Taking the bag and whatever other items she thought important and worth carrying, Rey finished and exited the vessel to find Han waiting for her.

"This way," he instructed, taking off down a side passage.

Rey followed him to a secondary hangar bay where a flat saucer of a vessel was waiting.

"Is that the Millennium Falcon?" Rey asked. "I've heard about it."

"No time for a tour," Han responded before heading up the loading ramp.

By the time they reached the cockpit, Chewie, Poe, Finn, and BB-8 had already arrived having taken a shorter journey from the bridge of the cargo hauler.

"Ready?" Han asked.

Chewie said something gruff, and Han nodded his approval. Firing up the engines, Han opened the bay doors by remote and flew his smaller ship out of his larger one. Looking toward Chewie, he gave the order, "Do it."

Pressing a remote control with one claw, Chewie activated a number of systems on the cargo hauler. Every module split apart from the main ship in smaller sections. Each chunk of the ship fired its own jet propellants, angling toward the Star Destroyer. In a resemblance of a hailstorm, the disassembled cargo vessel slammed into the pursuing capital ship and detonated on impact. The damage done was catastrophic. The cargo ship was obliterated, but the Star Destroyer was crippled with a massive hole in its central hull and smaller ones in the control tower. Internal fires burned brightly until what was left of the atmosphere vented into space, leaving most of the ship powerless and dead.
