Chapter 07: Pursued
Sentis reached the controls for the hangar doors, but when he activated them, the doors still refused to open. Grimacing, he ran back to the ship and entered long enough to shout to Rey and Poe in the cockpit.
"The relays aren't working, spent too many years idle," Sentis told them. "I'll have to use the primaries. Don't wait for me."
Rey spun around in her seat but was only in time to see the hull close behind him as Sentis left.
"We're not going to leave him behind," Rey said. It was less of a question and more of a declarative statement, but uncertainty registered in her voice.
"Not if I can help it," Poe agreed.
Sentis rode the lift back to the surface and instantly witnessed the arrival of the first squad of stormtroopers. Clad in pristine white armor and marching in formation, they stood out amid the greens and browns of the forest. Knowing he'd be spotted the moment he left the hollow of the tree, Sentis ran, sprinting between tree trunks and trying to keep something solid between him and the soldiers. Blaster fire struck the trees around him, sparks erupting at every point of impact.
Flipping back a fake boulder the size of his chest, Sentis uncovered a set of levers. Taking the first one, he flipped it over from right to left. The ground shook as concussive charges were set off and blasted apart the trees covering the hangar doors. Before the last detonation had triggered, Sentis flipped the second lever. The quaking of the forest doubled in intensity as the mechanisms holding the hangar doors closed were destroyed. The doors, no longer restrained, pulled back to either side. Grass, topsoil, and fragments of trees spilled into the hangar, but not enough to hinder the liftoff of the ship inside.
Poe brought the craft up and out of the hole in the ground, but Sentis was unable to reach it as the stormtroopers quickly began concentrating their fire on the ship. Abandoning his position, he ran toward his house and Rey's speeder. Climbing aboard, he opened the throttle full and shot away from the area at top speed.
"We can't leave him," Rey insisted.
"He's already gone," Poe countered. "And if we don't get out of here ourselves, this ship is going to be turned back into scrap."
Without waiting for any further argument, Poe pushed the thrust controls forward to amplify power to the engines. The makeshift craft flew over the heads of the stormtroopers, causing some of them to duck, before ascending at a steep angle.
TIE fighters came screaming down from orbit to intercept them, green bolts of laser fire spitting out in a hailstorm of impacts.
Restricted scene summary –
The TIE fighter chase scene out of Jakku was nearly identical to the film version with the exceptions of the ship not being the Falcon and Poe being the pilot.
Poe flying the ship instead of Rey is important because he has more training and experience than she does. Cutting thrust in order to target while in free fall is a pretty awesome move, but I don't think Rey could've done it. In the movie, she nearly crashed the Falcon just taking off, and less than two minutes later, she was out-flying pilots who'd been fighting actual combat missions for years. That learning curve is so steep it's practically vertical.
Anyway, after the chase...
With nothing left to shoot at, Finn had no reason to stay in the gun turret and departed for the cockpit. He found BB-8 hanging suspended in the corridor, and the droid released the magnetic anchor and landed on the deck, reeling in the attached cable into an internal storage compartment. Entering the cockpit, Finn heard part of a conversation between Poe and Rey.
"I'm good, but I never would've flown through a crashed Star Destroyer," Poe said. "How did you know there'd be room to maneuver?"
"I've done a lot of salvaging in there over the years," Rey answered. "Scrap thieves make it too dangerous for most salvagers, so it's fairly intact if you want to risk it."
"You have good instincts," Poe congratulated. "Have you ever flown before?"
"Small ships, and not in combat," Rey told him, "Cargo haulers and the like. I never made orbit."
"Then, you'll enjoy this," Poe offered, turning the controls to make the ship swing around and give her a grand view of Jakku from space. She stared in open mouthed wonder. "When there's time, I'll see about giving you a few flying lessons."
"That would be great," Rey said, her eyes locked on the view.
The moment was interrupted by an alarm going off.
Restricted Scene Summary –
This is where the scene about Rey making desperate repairs to the ship in orbit would've gone, but it was still too close to the original to be printed here.
Kylo Ren receives information that the droid has escaped their forces on the ground. He doesn't chop up a computer console with his lightsaber because how can anyone take him seriously as a threat when he's acting like a temperamental five year old? Instead, he coldly puts a Force choke on the officer who delivered the news, telling the man he has failed. The officer manages to mention a girl helping the escaped prisoner and renegade stormtrooper. The officer's boots skid on the floor as he's dragged over to within an inch of Kylo before Ren calmly asks the man what else he knows.
