Chapter Two
The sun had risen on Balmorra and Jaric went out for more scavenging not before saying goodbye to his mother. He stopped by the market to see a friend of his who ran a food stand. When he got there, Jaric saw his friend beaten and his stand destroyed.
Jaric: Menos! What happened?
Menos: It was horrible! These bandits came in and demanded money for protection! When I refused, they beat me near to death and ruined my stand and all my products!
Seeing bandits taking advantage of the chaos that had come to Balmorra as a result of the Jedi's war with the Sith made his blood boil. Even more so was the fact that the victim was a nice old man who was always nice to Jaric and his mother.
Jaric: As if we didn't have enough to worry about! Did you see where they went?
Menos: There's no need to get yourself in a scrap on my behalf!
Jaric: But we can't just let these guys get away with this! It's not right!
Menos: Listen boy, your mother has enough to worry about without you chasing bandits and scoundrels on an old man's behalf. If anything happened to you, I would never forgive myself. Promise me you won't get into any trouble!
Jaric thought for a moment. Then Jaric flashed a smile to the old man.
Jaric: I promise.
That put a smile on the old man's face. As Jaric was prepared to leave, Menos stopped him.
Menos: Before you go, I saw your father stumble around here. He dropped some Republic Credits. Figured you might need this.
Menos said as he tossed Jaric the credits left behind by his drunk father. Jaric couldn't believe Menos's generosity as he put the credits in his pocket. His only reaction was a friendly smile that made Menos almost forget the beating he received. As Jaric walked around the market, he spotted a beautiful bird. The sight of the bird distracted, a mean looking Twi'lek bumped into him causing Jaric to tumble to the ground.
Jaric: I'm sorry sir!
The Twi'lek proceeded to lift the boy by his tattered shirt.
Twi'lek: Are you blind or something?! Watch where you're going you little brat!
Jaric remained silent, angering the Twi'lek.
Twi'lek: Who am I kidding?
The Twi'lek then released the boy. As Jaric caught his breath, the Twi'lek turned to him.
Twi'lek: You're lucky I got better places to be! Next time you'll end up worse than that old man!
Hearing those words enraged Jaric, though he wouldn't let it show. As the Twi'lek walked away, Jaric decided to tail him. Life as a scavenger had made him skilled in stealth as scavengers were shot on sight. He tailed the Twi'lek to an alleyway where he met an older human male.
Human Male: So what exactly did you find Mes'hoca?
Mes'hoca: An old man gave me grief, so I decided to lay a beat down on him. He had some credits on him. Not much though. You happy Garach?
Garach looked at the stolen loot with a sinister smile.
Garach: Good find! Very good find!
Jaric made his move as he threw a stone and hit Garach in the head causing him to drop the credits. He ran to it with an almost blinding speed and scooped up the stolen credits. As Garach regained some sense, he saw the young Jaric running away.
Garach: Mes'hoca! That brat has our loot! Let's get him!
The two bandits chased Jaric through the alley way. Jaric's surprising speed nearly helped him outrun his pursuers until he ran into a dead end. Garach grabbed Jaric by the neck.
Garach: Got you you little shit! Thought you could get away with our loot?!
Mes'hoca took a closer look at Jaric.
Mes'hoca: Hey Garach! I recognize this kid! I bumped into this brat not too long ago!
Jaric: Let me go you scumbags!
Jaric said this with fire and anger in his voice. Garach then proceed to throw Jaric against the wall.
Garach: Deal with him!
As Garach commanded this, Mes'hoca pulled out a vibroblade.
Mes'hoca: With pleasure!
Mes'hoca he placed the blade near Jaric's neck.
Mes'hoca: I let you off light last time. Now I'm gonna repay the favor!
Mes'hoca readied to kill the young boy. As everything seemed hopeless for Jaric, time seemed to stop as he closed his eyes. For a brief moment, he opened them to see a crimson lightsaber through Mes'hoca chest. Jaric could feel the heat from the lightsaber as Mes'hoca's lifeless body released Jaric. He then saw a tall, menacing hooded figure clad in black robe like armor as he proceeds to cut down Garach into ribbons. It was only Jaric and this menacing figure in that alleyway.
