The Last Wizard's Apprentice
Rey walked alone through a dark forest, she'd been sent here by Queen Leia to seek out Luke an old hermit living in the forest. He was said to be a powerful wizard, the very last, but Rey wasn't sure that she believed that. Wizards were nothing but myths, she thought.
Twilight had fallen over the forest and shadows danced across the path before her.
As she walked she felt a dark presence, she sensed something watching her. Her eyes scanned the shadows between the trees, suddenly her eyes landed on a brief flash of movement in the trees.
A large dark form appeared on the path before her. She screamed in surprise as she saw a dragon, she backed away quickly...to quickly. She stepped on the corner of her cloak and stumbled to the ground, continuing to back away from the creature as quickly as she could.
Finally regaining her composure, she came to her feet and drew her sword. She pointed the tip of her blade at the beast, glaring down the edge of the blade at him. "Don't come near me...monster!"
The dragon took a step towards her.
"Stay back, dragon."
"I have a name and it isn't dragon," a deep voice came from the throat of the dragon,
Rey was visibly surprised, she lowered her sword slightly. "Then what is it?"
"Kylo," he replied.
Rey sighed, and lowered her sword. "I'm sorry, Kylo, I over reacted. You only startled me."
"I have that affect," the beast replied.
"I'm Rey."
"It's nice to meet you Rey, but what is a girl doing alone in the forest? It isn't safe... there are dangerous beasts lurking in the shadows."
She was almost sure that she could see him smirking as he said the last words.
"I'm looking for the hermit, Luke, do you know where he is?"
"I do, but I must warn you...he is nothing but a bitter old man. He isn't worth seeking," the dragon replied.
"I have to find him," she answered.
"Why?"
She looked down. "I have a power within me...I can't control it,"
"I can teach you," the dragon spoke softly.
Rey looked at him doubtfully.
"Dragons are magical beings, I can teach you just as well as Luke can."
"Thank you for the offer, but I promised the queen that I would go to Luke...that I would trust no one else."
"Very well, I will guide you," Kylo replied. "It's a long walk and we will get there faster if we fly."
"Fly?"
The dragon nodded. "Do you trust me?"
The girl swallowed hard before nodding.
Kylo turned to the side slightly. "Climb on my back."
She took a deep breath before stepping forward. She reached out to touch the scales on his side. She moved her fingertips, his scales were softer than she'd expected. She climbed up onto his back, wrapping her arms around his neck.
Kylo stood on his hind legs and began to flap his wings until they were lifted up off of the ground.
Rey gasped in fear as they rose above the trees. She closed her eyes and found herself holding onto him a little tighter.
"Don't be afraid," Kylo whispered.
She opened her eyes to see the heavens dotted with starlight above them and the twilit trees below them.
"It's beautiful."
Kylo didn't reply, he only soared higher, taking her up into the starlight. He carried her up into until their was an ocean of fluffy white clouds below them, and a crystal clear sapphire sky above them, adorned with the tiny white diamonds... stars that glowed worlds away.
She reached down to touch the soft clouds below, before drawing her gaze to the stars, never had she seen anything so beautiful... never had she felt so wonderful.
They continued to fly through the night, and her eyes grew heavy. She leaned forward, laying on his long neck... as she held him close. As they flew through the night sky, she drifted off to sleep.

It was dawn when they reached the small cabin in the clearing. Kylo landed several meters away and Rey climbed down.
She turned and began to make her way towards the cottage, but noticed that the dragon hadn't followed her. She came to a halt and turned to look back at him. "Aren't you coming?"
He shook his head. "I don't belong here..."
"You're afraid," she said.
"I'm a dragon...not everyone can see beyond my scales as you can. He tried to kill me once."
"Kylo..."
"This is your quest...not mine."
Before she could reply, he flew away. She sighed and turned back towards the cottage.
As she reached the door, she knocked on it. There was no reply, so she knocked again.
She heard footsteps, then a grumpy old voice spoke. "Go away! I don't want any visitors...there's a reason I live in the middle of the forest alone."
"I need your help," she said.
"Go bother someone else," he replied through the door.
"Queen Leia sent me."
She heard a sigh from within, then he opened the door.
He looked at her. "Why did she send you?"
"I have powers, I can't control them."
He didn't respond.
"I need you to teach me...teach me to be a wizard."
"No."
"Maybe the dragon was right. You are just a bitter old man," she said.
He smirked. "No, I'm a wizard."
"Then teach me."
"I will...it is time. I am the last wizard and I must pass on what I know."
She smiled. "Thank you."

The next morning, Rey sat eating breakfast with Luke.
"There's something I must ask you, Luke." She took a sip of her coffee, trying to break the awkwardness of what she was about to say.
He nodded.
"The dragon..."
Luke sighed, putting his head in his hands. "It's a long story...one I'm ashamed to tell."
"Tell me...please."
Luke sighed. "He's not a dragon...he's my nephew."
"Kylo is your nephew?"
"Ben, his real name is Ben...he's only forgotten."
Rey gasped in surprise. "What happened?"
"He was my apprentice, there was accident during his training. I turned him into a dragon by mistake, I cannot undo it... I haven't been able to figure out how."
Rey was silent for a moment. "He said that you tried to kill him."
"It wasn't intentional, I didn't recognize him."
Rey nodded. "I'm going to save him...I'm going to bring him back."
"Rey...you can't, I'm the last wizard, I tried and I failed. You will try and you will fail."
"I'm not afraid of failure...and I won't stop trying until I succeed." She stood and went out the door without another word.

Rey wandered through the forest, until at last she felt that dark presence...those piercing eyes watching her. She turned to see Kylo standing behind her.
She lifted her arm, reaching her hand out towards him.
The dragon lowered his head, pressing his snout against her palm.
She placed her hands on either side of his face, pulling him closer and pressing her forehead against his.
"Ben..." she whispered, and she saw a change in his eyes, they appeared less animal-like and more human.
She closed her eyes, and following her instincts breathed a series of ancient words. As she finished the spell, a series of words she didn't know the meaning of or how she knew them, she placed a kiss on the soft scales of his face. She felt a wave of power erupt from him, pushing her back.
She stood and looked where the dragon had been, to see a young man with midnight black hair and pale skin laying in the grass.
She went over to him, removing her cloak and draping it over him.
After a moment, he regained consciousness and sat up. He held his hand out before him, surprised to see fingers instead of claws, soft skin instead of scales.
He turned his gaze towards her. "You saved me."
She smiled shyly, looking down at the grass.
He reached over, gently lifting her chin so that she would look at him.
Her eyes met his and she saw the same thing she'd seen in his dragon form... compassion.
He leaned closer to her, until at last their lips met.
Rey felt her heart lift and soar high into the night sky, she felt as if he was taking her flying all over again... only it felt even more wonderful than that. She wrapped her arms around him, pulling him closer.
