Chapter 3

Esther sat down at the long couch chair that formed 3/4's of an O and had a table in the middle of it while the couch stood a few feet away from the room she was previously locked up in and escaped from. She pulled her hood up partially and touched the golden metal leaf on her halo headband remembering the day she had been given it.

"This metal is made of lithium to help limit your powers. It'll make your life easier to help you fit in with the normal children," Ephraim said to her four year old self as he handed her a beautiful headband.

"How do I wear it?" four year old Esther asked her father curiously.

Ephraim smiled a genuine smile and helped her out by placing it around her head like a halo and saying, "Like that. Now you are normal and it will hide you from the Empire. Just never take it off in front of anyone that you don't trust or else your true side will be revealed."

After his warning Esther made a promise to her father that she had never broken after that day. Even after she was betrayed by her friend and her parents were....

Quickly, Esther shook herself of that memory and pulled her hood back down over her face as a tear escaped her eye and was cascading down her cheek. She wiped it away and heard footsteps heading her way then stop near where she sat. "Hera wants to let you know that we are heading back to Lothal," the chief's voice said.

"Wait. Right now?! With Imperials chasing us?!?!" Esther said in a freaked out tone looking at him with bewildered eyes as if he had gone mad.

"Calm down kid. It's okay. Look, we lost the tie's when we jumped into hyperspace and the ghost can scramble its signature so they won't recognize us when we return," the man replied in a calm voice.

"Wow really? Never heard of somebody that owns a ship that is capable of doing that," Esther said to herself in awe.

"Well, then I guess you don't get around much kid," the man said in an amusing tone.

Esther rolled her eyes at that jibe and said "Of course not. It's not every day you see a Lothrat boarding a ship filled with rebels that can just enter into hyperspace to and from Lothal without getting caught by the Empire already."

The man just chuckled at that sentence and smiled. "Your a pretty good kid. Wonder why the Empire was chasing you."

"Probably because I mess with them sometimes to make them look stupid or its probably because I make their best bounty hunters look like fools when trying to catch their targets," Esther replied in an amusing tone with a smirk that the man wouldn't be able to see.

"Wait, you make the best bounty hunters look like fools? I don't believe it," Sabale said walking in on their conversation.

"Yah and I've never seen you without your helmet off, so I guess we're both with disappointments today," Esther replied to his comment sarcastically and with a bit of anger laced to it before she got up and headed towards another room that looked like a kitchen.

Kanan looked over at Sabale with a bit of a glare and a stern look combined together. (sighs) "Fine, I'll go apologize but you can't blame me for stating the obvious. I mean, that boy doesn't even look like he can take down a soldier," Sabale pointed out before heading to the same room the boy went into.

He opened the door and walked in only to find a young girl of his same age staring at him in shock. Esther was starting to get hot and sweaty underneath this scarf and hood, so she decided to let her face be free of the cool wind provided in this room long enough for her body temperature to cool down. She pulled down her hood, making her bright blue braided hair fall down to her waist and showing off her golden painted metal halo headband, with her thick black string showing at the back of her head obviously the only thing keeping it together, and pulled her scarf down from her face to show off her facial features traits of herself being a girl. Pulling back her short lock of hair behind her ear again, Esther looked at herself in her reflection before hearing the door open and feet take a few steps towards her before stopping. She turned to look and see Sabale staring at her in shock.

She shook herself out of her state of shock and began to panic before taking out her gun and training it on him. "Hey whoa. It's okay, I won't hurt you," Sabale said in a calming tone after getting out of his state of shock.

"Really? Why would you want me to put down my own weapon? So that way you can take advantage of me and hurt me!" Esther said in a tearful way as she remembered the last boy she trusted when only seven years old and he took away her parents from her.

"No, trust me. If I wanted to hurt you, I would've done it the moment I saw the real  you. Please just trust me on this one," Sabale said in a pleading, yet calm, tone as he slowly advanced on her with one step forward.

Esther kept her gun trained on him and flinched before take a step back away from him and began to shake. "The last time I trusted a male, I lost everything! And I was only seven!" she snarled at him in an angry, yet crying and tearful, tone.

"Listen, I know what you are going through. Trust me, I've lost everything and nearly died when I trusted someone only to have them betray me but you can't let that decision affect you now when your surrounded by those who have all been affected by the Empire as well as you. I'm guessing," Sabale explained while taking a small step forward.

For a moment, nothing happened between the two then Esther just lowered her gun before stating softly "It's not just one way I've been affected in trust."

Sabale looked at the young girl, confused at what she just said before letting her continue. "I've lost everything when I was three and then I lost everything again when I was seven."

When she said that sentence, Esther put her gun away and looked at Sabale with tears in her eyes before turning away from him and hugging herself. Sabale came closer to her and placed a gentle hand on the girls shoulder. When she flinched, he sighed and said "Can you tell me your name at least? If you do, then I'll take off my helmet to show you what I look like while not telling the rest of the crew of your true gender."

Esther looked back at Sabale with a look of distrust in her eyes before sighing. "Esther, stay here. I will sacrifice my life for you," her sister's voice sounded in her head.

"Esther, my name is Esther Bridger," Esther said reluctantly and almost quietly.

She felt Sabale take his hand off her shoulder and heard him take off his helmet with both hands. Esther turned to see a boy her age with tanned skin, soft brown eyes, short purple hair with orange tips like he dyed it that way, sharp cheekbones, thin lips, and a soft nose. He wore colorful Mandalorien armor that looked to be designed in many different ways with a colorful chest plate, colorful shoulder pads, purple elbow and knee pads, black gloves with paint splattered from the fingertips almost to the end of his elbows, and paint splattered boots. He was a bit taller than her and looked to be showing some muscles but not enough to take her down.

"Wow, you can be quite a looker. But listen, just please don't tell anyone about my true gender. If word got out on the streets of Lothal that there was a girl pretending to be a boy, then who knows what the Empire would do to me once they caught me," Esther said to him in a desperate tone turning to face Sabale fully.

"Don't worry. I won't say a thing but your disguise won't work for long and one day they will figure out your disguise Esther. So you have to be careful," Sabale said in a calm tone while gently holding both of her shoulders in a gentle gesture.

"If they haven't caught me now, then they won't be able to catch me in the near future," Esther replied in an amusing tone with a snort.

Sabale smirked and thought Dang, this girl's a fighter. She's pretty cool.

Esther smiled at him before quickly pulling her hold and scarf up to disguise herself just as the cheif came in. "Hey, everything okay?" Kanan asks Sabale since he hadn't heard from him in the past half an hour since he sent him in here to apologize to the boy.

"Yah, we're okay now sir. Just talking about what life is like on the streets for a lone kid," Esther replied for Sabale in a soft voice.

"Okay, well we just landed outside Tarkintown and me and Hera are heading out to do some business with our source. So why don't you invite our guest here to grab one of the crates we have below and pull his weight to help the people down there," Kanan said to Sabale before he left.

"Tarkintown? What's Tarkintown?" Esther asked Sabale as he began to walk out of the room before following him to the room where she had originally met most of the crew and changed her life forever.
