Chapter Eight: The Unknown
The Gauntlet shot through the atmosphere of this new planet, flames licking the glass window, representative of the excitement running through the pair of pilots. After several seconds, the fires dissipated, revealing the lush landmass ahead of them. The sky was emerald green, with a trio of red stars lighting the daytime. Down on the ground, thick jungles of green and purple plants entangled the land. This place looked like it hadn't seen civilised life in a very long time, if ever. It was completely wild. Sabine and Ahsoka were lost for words, neither of them in their vast travels had ever seen anything of the sort.
"Have you ever?" Sabine started, trailing off in silence. Ahsoka could not bring herself to answer, both of them were in awe. But, as they sat there, lost in a trance at the view in front of them, dark machinations worked against them. A sudden, artificial blue light bathed the Gauntlet, causing the dashboard to spark and the overhead lights in the cockpit to deactivate.
"What's that? What's happening?" Sabine asked, panic beginning to rise.
"Something's scanning us...I've lost all controls..." Ahsoka answered, focused on trying to force the ship back into action. Along with the strange blue light came an ominous deep hum, foreshadowing the evil to come. The dashboard continued to spark, as small lashes of electricity burst out. Ahsoka wrestled the flightsticks, a glare on her face as the blue light suddenly disappeared, leaving as quickly as it had arrived.
"We've lost power...diverting auxiliary power to the engines" Ahsoka said out loud, flicking several switches above her. The engines at the rear of the ship began to shoot into life, orange lights appearing within them, but it was too little, too late.
With a flicker of her eyes, Sabine came to, groaning as her head pulsed in pain. At this point, she was wishing that she'd kept her helmet on as she ran a hand through her hair, wincing a little. A glance upwards revealed that she'd been thrown several metres from the crash, presumably smashing through the front window of the cockpit and landing nearby. With heavy breaths, she attempted to coax her aching muscles into action, slowly pulling herself up. She turned back towards the crash site, the Gauntlet was in a state, and it looked like an abandoned shipwreck. But suddenly, a look of panic appeared on Sabine's face as she remembered Ahsoka and quickly looked around for her. A few seconds of searching yielded success, and she found her friend still sat in the pilot's seat, a belt having prevented her from being thrown from the crash. The Mandalorian limped towards her friend, slowly clambering through the smashed window and cursing in Mando'a as broken glass spiked through her hand. She moved over to the pilot's seat and tore away the tattered belt, moving two fingers to the togruta's neck to check for a pulse. Ahsoka was alive, that was some good news at least. Seconds later, the togruta slowly opened her eyes and coughed, leaning forwards. Sabine quickly moved to support her, and Ahsoka nodded gratefully.
"What...happened?" Ahsoka asked, clearly having difficulty remembering the last few moments.
"To be honest with you" Sabine started, glancing out at the wilds around them for the first time "I'm still trying to figure that out myself".
After several minutes of rest, the pair found the strength to stand and clambered out of the wreck of the Gauntlet. Sabine moved forwards and scooped her helmet up from the ground outside, brushing it down and tutting. Ahsoka, meanwhile, was more concerned with the ship, eyeing it up and down with a grimace. She shook her head, still wondering what had gone wrong. She remembered some sort of light, as they entered the planet's atmosphere, and then...blackness. Sabine moved to her side, now wearing her helmet, and sighed at the sight of the Gauntlet.
"What do we do now?" she asked in an uncertain voice.
"Look over there" Ahsoka responded, pointing in the opposite direction. Sabine followed her gasp and frowned, rising over the treetops was a plume of grey smoke, it couldn't be far away. The two looked back at one another.
"Could be civilisation, worth a look" Ahsoka stated.
"But what about the ship?" Sabine asked, uncomfortable with just leaving it there.
"There's nothing we can do about it right now, if we find a way to fix it we can return. Right now, our only option is to push forwards" her friend answered, striding towards the smoke plume with a newfound vigour. Sabine took one last pitiful look at the Gauntlet before sighing and following the togruta into the unknown.
As the pair strolled through the thick undergrowth, Ahsoka couldn't help but be reminded of a planet that she'd served on in the Clone Wars, Felucia. Both planets had such unique flora and a huge canvas of colours, the togruta smiled briefly, Sabine must have been loving the vast array of different colours around her. The Mandalorian was indeed captivated by everything she laid her eyes on, everywhere she looked was all so...new. But her mind couldn't help but think to the darker side of this place, what dangers were hiding just out of sight? The trouble with somewhere completely new was that familiarity was safe, and so everything that they saw could be dangerous for all they knew. Ahsoka did not seem phased though, Sabine guessed that her friend had witnessed many planets like this during her exile with the rise of the Empire.
"We appear to be getting close, get ready, we don't know what we're going to find" Ahsoka said, breaking the silence and causing Sabine to nod in agreement. The Mandalorian's hands reached towards her holsters and she kept a firm grip on the end of her blasters as they moved forwards.
Soon, the trees started to thin and opened out into a small clearing. At the centre of the clearing stood what appeared to be a campfire of sorts, with different branches of vibrantly coloured plants piled on top of each other to support the flames. A white bedroll, yellowed with age, was laid next to the fire and yet the place seemed abandoned. This camp had obviously been established recently, but that left a very clear question, where was the camper? Ahsoka knelt down next to the fire and held her palm above the flames, closing her eyes in concentration.
"These flames have not burnt long, a couple of hours at most, so who made them?" she commented, glancing upwards to see Sabine stood a few metres ahead. The togruta walked towards her, wondering what had her friend so captivated, and gasped as she joined her. The camp had been made atop a cliff edge, and the view from this vantage point revealed this planet in its full beauty. Huge purple and cyan mushrooms covered the ground in a blanket of colour, and a scarlet red sun sat in the emerald green sky. Strange bird-like creatures glided through the clouds, squawking and filling the air with their calls. And in the distance, far below then, the pair spotted large plains of grass upon which huge unknown creatures grazed peacefully. Everywhere they looked was a new enigma, but soon they saw something that they could understand. Looking back to their left, they both simultaneously spotted a set of footprints leaving the campfire. Judging by the ground, these prints were recent, and the pair shared a glance before immediately moving to follow the trail.
The pair snuck through thick red ferns, frowning to try to keep on the correct course, there were no clear paths here. Ahsoka led the way, and would bat away a nearby branch every few seconds, charting a course through the unknown. The minutes passed and Sabine began to grow impatient, they were getting nowhere and there was no sign to suggest that Ezra had been here. Yes, the footprint could have been his, but when were things ever that easy? As all of the different possibilities began to fill her mind, Ahsoka raised a single hand, causing them both to stop. She had spotted something ahead. Sabine poked her head out from behind her friend and raised her eyelids in surprise behind her helmet. They moved forwards, into another small clearing with trees all around them, and crouched down to examine the curiosity before them. Collapsed on the ground, in a pile of sparking dead metal, was a Clone Wars era B-1 battle droid. Sabine removed her helmet and placed it down next to her, wanting to examine the droid with her own two eyes. She then looked up at Ahsoka.
"First the droideka on Pillio and now this?" she commented in a suspicious tone.
"I have travelled the galaxy for many years now and trekked across most charted worlds, and do you know what I have never come across? A coincidence..." Ahsoka responded, also suspicious of this droid's reason for being here. The pair turned their attention back to the droid, and Sabine noticed something strange, she had assumed that the droid had been attacked by some form of local wildlife and that was the reason for its current state. But new evidence disproved that theory, specifically a blaster burn right in the centre of the droid's head. Sabine ran her finger along the burn and retracted quickly with a hiss, it was still hot.
"This was recent, very recent" she commented, and they both continued to frown in suspicion. Questions filled their minds. Who here had access to a blaster and disliked droids? In fact, scratch that, why were there people and droids here in the first place?
A rustle from the bushes ahead gathered the pair's attention, and they each instinctively reached for their weapons. The rustling movement began to spread, and quite soon every red fern in the trees surrounding them was shaking violently. Something was coming. Sabine drew her blasters and aimed all around her, unsure where to fire. Ahsoka ignited her white lightsabers and drew a defensive stance, taking a breath to prepare for what was to come. Suddenly, a single B-1 battle droid stepped out of the undergrowth, its E-5 blaster pointed firmly at them. Another droid soon followed it. And another. And another, until a plethora of battle droids filled the clearing, surrounding the pair completely. The officer, noticeable by his different weaponry and yellow markings, walked towards them and pointed a finger at them.
"You are under arrest, for the Confederacy of Independent Systems" it said in a monotone voice. Sabine and Ahsoka shared a look and gulped, before turning to the army of battle droids. It was time to make a scrapheap.
