SCENE I: REY MEETS LUKE

Rey steps carefully up towards where Skywalker stands. This icon was only rumors and myths to her for so many years. This legend that had destroyed both Death Stars, saved the entire Galaxy, and brought back the order of the Jedi... is here before her. Impossible to find, they had said. But with the help of so many heroes, she found her way to him.

This moment hangs in the air as they both realize what this means. Luke sees something so familiar in her it's almost as if he is staring into a mirror, watching his young self; the man he was before he became anything, that lonely kid on Tatooine with only raw power in his veins.

Likewise, Rey sees something in him she doesn't understand yet. The Force connects them strongly but without much knowledge of how it works, Rey is unable to notice just how strong it is.

She is nervous, even frightened. She feels her palms warm anxiously as she approaches, unsure of what to say. But one thing is clear. His saber will return to its rightful owner.

Reaching into her satchel, she removes it carefully and holds it out for him.

His old eyes finally leave hers only to gaze at the object he hadn't seen since the moment he discovered Vader's relation to himself.

Instantly, without having to lift a finger, images flash before his mind. He remembers the fight with Vader, the moment his wrist was slashed, the burning pain that shocked his senses, watching the weapon of legends plummet down into an abyss... and the heartbreaking news that came after that; the news that changed his life forever.

He reaches out to carefully take it, not afraid of these memories now.

Rey removes her hands to watch him curiously as he observes the saber passed down from Vader himself... passed down from Anakin Skywalker, into the hands of Obi-wan Kenobi who carried it for years before handing it over to Anakin's child. Luke holds the relic tightly, astonished that it found its way back to him when he never thought he'd see it again. Questions go through this mind but the loudest thought is that of destiny; a destiny that stands before him now in the form of the only person able to find him. He knew this day would eventually come.

This was no accidental meeting.

His eyes that show wisdom and stories beyond what Rey can imagine, lift to look back into her own as she waits for him to speak. "...It's time isn't it?" he asks in a way that portrays authority and a divine understanding of the Force that Rey cannot begin to contemplate on her own.

Unable to think of a reply, Rey remains a bit awestruck, and unsure of what he means by this...

But she is sure that this statement means more than she knows.

Scene cuts to Rey and Luke Skywalker at another location, a scenic overlook as he continues to look over the saber back in his hands.

Rey stands behind him as he faces the ocean, watching him as he speaks.

"When I left the others I was heartbroken. I failed my students and my former masters. Tragedy struck me harder than ever before. Evil grew right under my nose and I was too foolish to see it... I didn't want to leave Leia or Han. But I had to go. If I was to make amends for my mistakes I knew I had to begin where it all began."

Rey then notices the stone platform he stands on. Engraved into it is the symbol of the Jedi order. This is it... this is where the first Jedi Temple is located.

"I had to wipe myself from existence and do what my master Ben Kenobi did. I was the last Jedi alive. I had to rediscover what that meant... Old Ben knew what his path was. And so do I. He didn't run. He waited for the right moment to act as I had to do." His robotic hand tightens around the weapon he holds and he looks into the distance, wind blowing his long grey hair. "The Force found him by sending me... and now it finds me by sending you."

Rey gets almost a shudder from his words, meaning in them that she takes deep into her soul.

He turns to face her. "Tell me... who are you?"

She shuts her lips that had been idly left open and takes this question a bit too plainly. "I'm Rey. The resistance sent me," she says as if she had rehearsed it. And of course her anxiety definitely made her rehearse this on the way. After all, she had no idea what to expect.

"...But who are you? Why would the Force send you to me?" he says more clearly, brows furrowed as he wonders what this means now. He takes a step forward. "What is special about you?" He speaks as if speaking to his young self, knowing the answers that would come from him back when he was only untapped energy just like her...

Rey stops to think on her answer but she speaks honestly. "I'm no one," she admits, never considering herself special in any way, even after the destruction of Starkiller Base and defeat of Kylo Ren.

He almost shakes his head. "Nobody is no one," he says truthfully.

She looks shyly at him. How does he know her so well already? Can she open up to him? Her eyes glance down as she thinks... and puts her never before spoken words together carefully. "Something inside me... that has always been there... is awake." She speaks quietly and looks at him at last, somehow knowing she can trust him even though they just met... "And I'm afraid," she adds, allowing herself to be vulnerable for once. She doesn't tell these things to another living soul. Finn wouldn't have answers, and she doesn't know Leia well enough to open up like this. And with the death of Leia's husband, Rey never felt it important to talk about herself to the general. But she has the chance to be honest now. "I don't know what it is. Or what to do with it," she admits. "...And I need help."

Luke considers what she said. He knows she's aware now and he knows what this encounter means. Looking down at the saber he asks himself: what would old Ben say? What would Master Yoda say?

His eyes come back to look at this lost soul. "You need a teacher..."

She returns his gaze, knowing he is the only one who can show her what to do. She can't describe it but... it's like she's found something she didn't know she needed and that's his guidance. Is that the real reason why she is meant to be here?

Rey's brows pull together slightly and she keeps a serious but also genuine and even pleading look. "Will you help me?"

He mirrors her expression only replacing the pleading look with one of contemplation. He can't deny that her being here now is fate. He hadn't felt the Force in anyone in the galaxy until recently and when her face began to appear in his dreams, he knew she would be the one to find him. And here she is now, asking for his counsel, and delivering an item of such significance... that to turn her away now would be to turn away from everything he has known of his duty in this galaxy.

This encounter is no coincidence. This is the moment everything changes.

Luke knows his answer and he approaches her, handing the saber back to her as she almost frowns a little and hesitantly takes it. "Follow me," he says to her and walks past her.

She turns and obeys after running her finger over the weapon and keeping it in her hand securely.

The two of them walk down the rocks that scatter in the green grass like steps, the salty cool breeze of the ocean catching their hair and clothing. Rey catches herself staring at the vast blue sees with a sense of peace, unable still, to be able to appreciate how beautiful that sight is, and how she's longed to see it all her life. Porgs nest by her feet when she walks by, glancing at them with a smile but that's when questions begin to fill her mind. She catches up with Luke who is far ahead of her, getting close enough for him to hear her. "So is this really the island that holds the first Jedi Temple?" she asks with interest, fascinated with its history.

"Known as the Ahch-To Jedi Temple. It was the first of many temples built throughout the galaxy, and one of the few that were not demolished by the Galactic Empire. The ancients would train and meditate here, bringing about the beginning of the Jedi for the first time."

Rey takes in every word he says, learning about all of this history for the first time. After all, it's not like she had any kind of education about the galaxy on Jakku. The most she ever heard were rumors thrown around Niima Outpost by other scavengers, traders, or traveling bounty hunters.

"Why here?"

"They thought of this place as a sanctuary. The idea of isolation is to stay away from the chaos and distractions of life. Out here with nothing but grass, rocks, and endless water, is where peace of the mind is easily achieved."

When she gazes out over the sea, that's the feeling she does get. And also the feeling of familiarity; as if she's seen this island and its view before in her dreams, and when she used to daydream about the ocean, what it could be like. That was always this island in her thoughts, the island that Kylo Ren found when he read her mind. How could that be?

He continues to lead her along a grassy cliffside until they both stop to see the ancient doorways carved from the stone, leading them into a large temple room that is the centerpoint of the formation. Rey notices that this temple isn't just one structure, a lot of different platforms and areas and caves on the island serving as a part of it.

She wonders to herself just how long ago it was all made, imagining the builders with stone and wood tools, living here like a colony until it was all finished...

That's when she realizes Luke is already walking into the structure and she quickens her pace to follow him.

Upon entry, her eyes scan over the stone walls, noticing writing carved into them and at the center of the room, a shallow circle pool of crystal clear water, the Jedi Order symbol easily visible beneath the liquid.

Her brows pull together just slightly when she realizes how little she knows. She hopes she won't be ridiculed for her next question. "What exactly... are the Jedi?" she says cautiously, never really asking that before.

"Peacekeepers. They worked for the Galactic Republic when it was around... That was before my time and before the Empire took over. The Jedi Order then was so diverse, they ranged from teachers, diplomats, and physicians, to negotiators and warriors," he says as he walks along the wall, reading and gazing over all that's displayed while Rey listens with interest. "They were composed of hundreds of different races over thousands of different worlds but they each carried the same moral values. They viewed purity of thought and detachment of emotions essential to enlightenment. Jedi philosophy emphasized self-improvement through knowledge and wisdom, adherence to slave morality, and selfless service through acts of charity, citizenship, and volunteerism."

"What about the dark side?" Rey asks with equal curiosity.

He looks at her and tries not to remember his father. "They believe in dominance; authority. And passion. They're led by greed and desire to control; a selfishness that disguises as the righteous persist of individual happiness. Their emotions fuel their power... and they let it control them."

"...Did Vader believe this?" She asks as if reading his thoughts.

His eyes cast down to the ground, a heaviness returning to his heart. "Yes," he nods.

"Will you... tell me about that day? On the Death Star...?" She sits down on the rim of the small pool. "What happened to him?"

As thoughts of that day return to him, Luke takes a deep breath and comes to sit down beside her. "It was... the second Death Star when Vader brought me before Darth Sidious in an attempt to turn me to his side. I fought my father but I refused to kill him. I wouldn't let my anger be my downfall like him. That's when Sidious had enough and attempted to shock me to death with Force lightning; something only the darkest Sith are capable of using. The agonizing pain I felt myself was nothing compared to what I felt in my father emotionally. He finally snapped, and threw his master into a chasm to die... He saved my life and ended the war. I always knew Anakin Skywalker was in there and I always felt that conflict in him. It was that moment that he returned and Darth Vader was no more."

"So you didn't kill him?"

His eyes drift down just a bit and he shakes his head slightly, memories flooding back to him. "I tried to save him. But the lightning had destroyed his life support and his heart was weak... He told me that I was right and asked for forgiveness of all the horrible things he'd done. He knew the Sith were evil... it was only a matter of time before he saw it clearly."

Rey is moved by this. She didn't think anyone so evil would be capable of salvation. And the rumors she heard about what happened that day don't do the whole story justice. Not at all.

"He died shortly after. But he died a Jedi... a Jedi that brought balance back to the galaxy at last," he finishes.

She hears pain laced through his words at his father's passing, though he hides it well. Perhaps that's a Force thing. She still isn't sure exactly what the Force is. But as she thinks on his story she looks down, realizing the state of things now. "It's a shame that balance didn't last..."

What he says next isn't what she expected, so much hope still in him. "Conflict will always arise in the galaxy. But so long as the Jedi are here... we will fight against it," he says in a sure tone, authority in his voice.

And when she looks at him, she knows she's looking into the face of the man who ended the Galactic Civil War; a hero; a Jedi; a legend.

"And that's where you come in," he says to her and stands to his feet. "Follow me to begin your first lesson."
