Star Gazing At Loved Ones
Huffing, Luke refuses to give Ahsoka anything in his arms. He is a strong little boy and he can carry the supplies all by himself. He wants to show everyone that he is just like his father.
"Luke, why don't you give me your blanket?" Anakin says, holding an arm out to the boy.
Luke shakes his head. "No. I got it." He replies, struggling to keep everything from falling out of his arms.
Anakin lends down, a sly smile on his face. "Why don't you sneak it to me?" He quietly asks. He then glances to Padmé then back at the blond boy. "I want to show your mother how strong I am. She already knows that you're a good helper."
Padmé restrains from smiling, keeping her gaze to the top of the hill.
"Okay." Luke agrees, stopping to hand one of his blankets off to Anakin. "There you go." He says, watching Anakin tuck it under his arm.
"Thanks, little man," Anakin replies before ruffling his hair. Luke laughs, swatting him away.
"Lukie, be nice." Leia scolds, using her free hand to sternly point at him.
"He is, Leia." Ahsoka chuckles. She and the little girl are holding hands, swinging their arms with each step. Leia has been inseparable from the Togruta since she and Rex arrived on the planet earlier today. She's already declared that Ahsoka is sleeping in her bed tonight.
"Luke is sharing so that your father can feel like he's actually doing something to help." Obi-Wan teases as he rolls his eyes.
Anakin snaps his head back to look at him. "I am helping." He scoffs. "See!" He counters with a smirk, gesturing to the blanket.
"And where did you get that from, sir?" Rex pipes up, getting laughs from Obi-Wan and Ahsoka. "Because the last person I saw carrying that was Commander Skywalker."
Luke eagerly gasps, looking back at the clone. He turns around and jogs to walk beside Rex. "I like that nickname." He says. Rex smiles, watching the boy try to keep in step with him "Can you say it again?" He asks, making the crowd chuckle.
The four-year-olds have only become funnier over the years. Everyone expected that as they grew that they would lose their innocent humor, but it hasn't happened yet. Everything they ask and say is adorable to witness.
"Are we almost there?" Leia groans. "My legs are getting tired."
"Should I carry you?" Ahsoka asks. Leia grins, nodding her head. Using the Force, Ahsoka lifts the girl up to rest her on her shoulders. "How's this?"
"Perfect!" Leia cheers. "Majestic! Marvelous! Incredible!" She lists off.
"Your sister has a large vocabulary," Obi-Wan says, looking down at Luke.
The little boy waves him off. "She's always saying those things."
"You don't like those words?"
"Nah."
"Too big?"
Luke hums in agreement, nodding his head. Though the twins have many similarities, they also share plenty of differences. Leia speaks as clear as day, the words falling out of her mouth like she's been speaking her whole life. Every word seems to come easily to her. She hears a word once then begins using it in sentences without missing a beat.
Luke, on the other hand, struggles with larger words. He hasn't mastered the skill of clearly speaking yet. It's nothing to fret about, but it's obvious when you listen to him talk after interacting with Leia. He just needs more practice and time with his speech.
"That's alright, Command Skywalker," Rex says, getting the little boy's attention. "I don't even use half of the words your sister does."
Luke smiles at that. Knowing someone as cool as Rex doesn't say those big words makes him feel a lot better.
"We're here." Padmé sighs, setting down her picnic basket. "My favorite stargazing spot."
"Wow!" Leia awes as she grabs onto Ahsoka's montrals to lean forward. "Mom, I love it!"
"I'm glad to hear that, Leia." Padmé affectionately chuckles. Anakin unfolds the blanket and lays it onto the ground. It's easily large enough to fit the seven of them on it.
Luke sets his belongings onto the ground then dives onto the blanket. "This is so soft." He says, snuggling against it.
"You picked the perfect blanket, Luke." Padmé praises as she sits beside the wiggling little boy. He grins, happy that he made his mother proud.
"Hey, I brought it up the hill," Anakin says as he helps Obi-Wan set up the telescopes. Ahsoka walks over and joins them after she sets Leia onto the ground.
"Thank you for your sacrifice," Padmé says as Leia eagerly sits in front of her. "I'm sure it was very difficult to carry this all on your own.
"Glad you appreciate my work." He says before winking back at Luke. He gives the little boy a thumbs-up, making him giggle and hide his smile. It is their secret, after all.
"Can you fix my hair, Mom?" Leia asks, throwing the long locks over her shoulders.
"Of course. What do you want?" Padmé asks, running her fingers through the silky dark hair. "Alderaan buns? Naboo curls?"
"No," Leia says, shaking her head. "I want my hair to look like Snip's!"
Ahsoka doesn't respond, but her smile is quickly noticed by Obi-Wan and Anakin. They reframe from laughing, going back to setting up the telescopes for the twins. They don't need to ask her if she likes having their attention. Anyone would love to have those twins adoring them.
Luke eventually grows tired of watching Padmé twist and pull on his sister's hair. He hops up from the blanket and joins everyone else around the fancy pieces of equipment. "What are you doing?"
"Well, I'm trying to help your father set up the legs for this telescope, but he must have forgotten the locks back at the house," Obi-Wan replies before sending his signature glare at Anakin.
"I didn't forget them." He immediately replies, digging around in the grass. "They must have dropped out of the bags when we opened them."
"Well, that's just great. How are we going to find them now that it's getting dark?"
"I don't know, but another set of hands would help."
"I am not bending down in this wet grass to help you look for the pieces you lost."
"Then I guess we'll never finish this telescope, Obi-Wan."
"You'll find them. Just stop complaining and start looking."
"I am looking!"
"Then look faster!"
"Hey!" Ahsoka shouts, getting the men's attention. She waves the shimmering pieces in her hand, a smirk on her face.
"Did you steal them?" Anakin asks as he rises to his feet. He holds out his hand for them.
"No. You gave them to me to hold." Rex says as Ahsoka hands them off. Anakin tightens his hand around them then bends down to get back to work.
"Why didn't you say something?" He groans as he snaps the locks into place.
"It was more fun watching the two of you bicker, sir." Rex chuckles as Ahsoka joins him.
Now that one of the telescopes is set up, Luke eagerly hops up to try and look in the eyepiece. "What is that?" He asks between jumps.
Anakin grabs Luke's sides, holding him so that he can properly look through the telescope. "I don't know. You tell me what you're looking at."
He turns and looks at Anakin. "It's purple." He answers. He gives another glance into the telescope before adding, "And brown."
"Hm. I don't know that planet," Anakin says, setting Luke onto the ground. "Snips?" He asks, turning to look at Ahsoka.
She hums, walking over to the telescope. She looks into it then smiles. "That's Tatooine, Luke. You've been there before."
"Oh, yeah." He smiles. "We saw Aunt Beru."
"And Uncle Owen," Anakin adds. He and Padmé took the children to the desert planet a few months ago. Though they hadn't spoken with Beru and Owen since just before the Clone Wars, the couple happily invited the Skywalker family to stay with them for a few days.
Anakin had been hesitant to go. He didn't want to return to the planet his mother died on, but Padmé insisted. It was nice, despite his original reservations about it. The twins got to see his step-brother and Anakin got to show them their grandmother's grave.
It was a touching moment for everyone.
They promised to visit again soon, wanting to make happy memories to replace the bad ones.
"Look at me!" Leia shouts, getting their attention. "I look like 'Soka." She says with a twirl. Padmé sits back, admiring her work. She was able to pull the little's girl hair to have peaks similar to montrals. The rest of it is braided to come down over her shoulders.
"I love it." Ahsoka chuckles as the little girl runs to give her a hug.
Anakin suddenly snatches the little girl up, tossing her into his arms. "Come on, let's pick a star." He says, carrying her to the open telescope. Beside them, Obi-Wan and Rex are helping Luke look into the second one.
"I want to see that one," Leia says, pointing to the star high above them.
"You're a difficult girl." Padmé teases as she joins Anakin and Ahsoka at the telescope.
Ahsoka tips the telescope so that Leia can look at her chosen planet. Leia leans forward, pressing her eyes against the lens. "I can't see." She huffs.
"Only open one eye, dear," Padmé instructs.
Leia follows her advice then happily sighs. "It's blue. And green. And swirly white." She describes.
Anakin and Padmé look to Ahsoka who smiles and crosses her arms over her chest. "Leia chose Alderaan to look at."
Leia gasps as looks at Anakin. "That's where Uncle Bail is!"
"Yupp." Anakin laughs, nodding his head. "You're a smart girl."
For the rest of the evening, the twins rush back and forth between the telescopes, seeing and learning about new planets. Most of the time, Ahsoka and Obi-Wan can answer their curious questions. Sometimes, nobody knows.
As the night drags on, the group of them rests on the blanket. They lay on their backs, admiring the trillions of stars in the clear sky. Padmé opens her picnic basket, sharing the midnight snacks she packed.
"Happy-patties!" Luke cheers as they are passed around.
"Yummy!" Leia grins before digging in.
They quietly munch on their treats, scanning the sky above for shapes that they can make out. "Over there, those stars look like a person." Ahsoka points out. Everyone turns their heads, agreeing when they see it.
"They look like they're holding a lightsaber," Luke shouts before finishing chewing.
"Yeah, it does like a Jedi." Rex agrees with a smile.
"Those ones look like a shaak." Leia pipes up. The stars are clustered on one end then branch out. They can understand her view of the herbivore in the sky.
Once the twins have regained their energy, they're back to looking at the planets and stars. Leia somehow talks Obi-Wan into staying with her. She drags him from telescope to telescope once Ahsoka or Anakin changes the view.
Obi-Wan eventually grows tired and picks her up to just hold her and stare at the stars. He listens to her endless chatter. She talks about anything that comes to her little mind, asking millions of questions.
"Where's your wife?" Leia suddenly asks in Obi-Wan's arms. The question brings a chuckle out of the group of them. It's a harmless curiosity that everyone expected would be brought up someday.
"I'm a Jedi, sweetheart," Obi-Wan says as he tucks a lock of hair behind her ear. Her head tilts and her eyebrows furrow over her dark brown eyes. Even in this lighting, he can see the gears trying to turn in her head. "Jedi don't get married. We are not to have any attachments. That means no wife." He says, bopping her nose.
"There must be somebody." She groans as she sinks.
No one responds to that. Eyes look to Obi-Wan, waiting to see what he'll say.
He could ignore her. He could say there is nobody or there was never anyone.
But he doesn't.
"There was somebody, long before you were born." He quietly says. Leia sits up, her eyes widening.
"Was she pretty?" She airily asks as she brings her hands together.
Obi-Wan nods with a smile. "Yes, she was very pretty. She had blonde hair that she would twist flowers in. She looked like a lily monster." He playfully growls, making Leia laugh.
"Can I meet her someday?" Leia asks.
"No. She is no longer here." Obi-Wan softly replies. "During the Clone Wars, she passed away."
Leia awes, her face softening. She twists to look to the stars. "It's okay. She's up there now." She comforts, her small arm wrapping around his neck. She presses her cheek against his, feeling the roughness of his beard.
"Yes, she is." Obi-Wan agrees, the image warming his broken heart. "Which one do you think she is?" He asks as he squeezes her close.
Leia takes a moment, scanning the stars. "That one!" She exclaims. Everyone looks to where her finger is pointing.
Padmé, Anakin, and Rex turn to Ahsoka for an answer. She knows the star alignment better than anyone. She loved learning about the planets as a padawan and remembered them easily.
She steps forward, her face dropping. She reaches out to Obi-Wan, about to grab his shoulder. "That's--"
"I know." He cuts off, his voice cracking slightly.
Mandalore.
That's the planet Leia pointed to.
Everyone freezes. They don't know what to say or do. The silence is starting to get painful, but Leia doesn't seem to notice as she rests her head on Obi-Wan's.
"It's beautiful," She coos, giving the adults her reason behind picking the planet. Obi-Wan only nods his head, unable to speak. He can't find the right words.
And thankfully he doesn't have to.
Leia suddenly spins in his arms and cups his cheeks. She grins as she brings his face towards hers so she can gently rub her nose against his in an affectionate way that only the twins do.
He laughs, a few tears escaping his closed eyes. He holds the back of her head and places her forehead against his. Then he says the three words he only allows himself to ever say to the twins. "I love you."
"I love you too, Uncle Obi." She instantly replies. They stand there in that position for a moment before Leia buries against his chest.
Obi-Wan knows that was the Force working through Leia. How else could she have picked that very planet out of the trillions in the sky?
He refuses to believe it was a coincidence.
He keeps her in his arms for the rest of the night, quietly talking to her. The others leave them in peace, going back to entertaining themselves with stargazing.
Luke sighs and lays his head onto Padmè's lap. She leans over, brushing his blond hair from his blue eyes. "Which star is your favorite?"
Luke only smiles. "All of them!" He cheers, throwing his arms to the side. Rex and Ahsoka laugh, turning to look at the young boy.
"Are you going to become an astronomer when you grow up?" Padmé asks.
"I don't know." Luke shrugs. "Do they get to go the planets?"
"I would think so," Padmé says as she reaches off to the side. She quickly snaps her wrists, unfolding the extra blanket Luke insisted on bringing. She covers him with it, keeping him warm from the cooling night air.
He happily sighs and cuddles into the blanket. "Thank you, Mom." He says as he closes his eyes.
Anakin rolls over to them. "Mind sharing? I'm freezing." He shivers.
Luke opens his eyes to pout at his father. This blanket isn't really meant for two people, especially since his mother tucked him in so nicely. He wants to say no, but he's been brought up to share.
"Don't worry, Luke. I packed a spare for Dad." Padmé smiles, reaching behind Rex to grab another. She tosses it to Anakin, who eagerly unfolds it to wrap himself up. "I knew you'd forget to pack one."
"Thank you for thinking of me." He grins as he curls beside Luke. The little boy giggles, leaning into his touch.
"It's not even cold," Ahsoka says, stretching out. "I think it's actually a very lovely night."
"Are you ever cold?" Anakin asks, arching his eyebrow at her.
"Occasionally." She smiles. "But I prefer wearing my tanktops. They're much easier to work in."
"How so?"
She spins her arms. "No resisting fabrics. Especially without the oversized robes."
Rex gestures towards Obi-Wan, who has wrapped Leia in his robes to keep the two of them warm. "I'm sure General Kenobi isn't complaining about being cold right now with his oversized robes."
Anakin playfully rolls his eyes. "Don't say that too loud. I don't need him to harp on me for ditching my Jedi robes."
They look down at the little boy, expecting him to have some cute comment now that Jedi were brought up. But they see that his mouth is open wide and his eyes are closed shut. He has fallen asleep for the night.
"My sweet sleeper." Padmé coos before kissing the boy's forehead.
Obi-Wan comes wandering back over, Leia still wide awake in his arms. "Leia's cold and would like to return back the house for the night."
"Well, Luke's asleep. He won't complain about leaving." Padmé replies. She sits back, signaling to her husband to remove him from her lap. Anakin rises to his feet then scoops the little guy into his arms to carry him back to the house.
"Does Luke always fall asleep first?" Ahsoka asks as she begins helping to pick up.
"Yeah. It doesn't take much for him to fall asleep. Leia is the troublemaker." Padmé answers as she folds one of the blankets. "Takes her forever to even close her eyes. She has so much energy at night."
"It doesn't bother Luke when she's up?" Ahsoka asks.
"She's pretty quiet when she's awake in their room." Padmé smiles. "If she does wake him up, he just comes into our room to sleep. Gradually, Leia tuckers herself out. Once she's asleep though, it's hard to wake her."
"I believe that." Ahsoka chuckles, watching her tell Obi-Wan and Rex how to take down the telescopes. Anakin has already returned to the house. He claimed he left to put Luke to bed, but Ahsoka and Rex have a bet that it's just because he didn't want to do any more work.
Soon, everything is packed up and they returned to the Skywalker household. Leia falls asleep in Obi-Wan's arms on the way. When they finally make it inside the toasty house, Anakin is in the kitchen waiting for them.
"What took you guys so long?" He asks with a sly grin.
"Well, we lost two people to carry back stuff." Obi-Wan groans. He walks back to the twin's bedroom to place Leia into her bed for the night.
"Yeah, we could have used you out there," Ahsoka says, sitting across from him at the table.
"Well, if I went back out then who would have made the hot chocolate?" He asks as he unveils the steaming cups.
Ahsoka grins, eagerly grabbing a cup. "I take it back." She smiles, holding it tightly in her hands. She will never pass up the opportunity to have a cup of hot chocolate.
"There better be a cup of tea for Obi-Wan," Padmé says as she reaches for a cup.
"Of course. And I made it just the way he likes." Anakin brags as the old man joins the group of them at the table.
"Honey?" Obi-Wan asks, looking into the cup.
"Plenty." Anakin nods.
Obi-Wan only hums, sitting down beside Rex. He then takes a sip, slightly scrunching his face. "You always make it too sweet." He complains, getting a laugh out of the group.
Anakin glares. "You always have something to say about my tea."
"Learn to make it right and I won't have anything to say." Obi-Wan fires back with a grin.
Anakin waves him off with a smile as the others began another topic of discussion. They talk for hours, catching up on each other's lives. Though they miss the adorable shenanigans from the twins, it's nice to actually talk with the loved ones gathered together.

The twins are so much fun to write! They would be adorable little monsters, hehe.
