Baby Duty (S7S)
Hera sighs, picking Jacen up from his crib. Kanan's old room has just been transformed into Jacen's. Now that the baby is over six months old, she and Kanan figured it was time. Their room has been getting too cramped and Jacen has been sleeping well through the night.
Hera worried Jacen would be affected by the room change, but she finds that she's the one struggling with it most. The thing that brings her the most comfort is knowing that Ezra and Zeb's and Sabine's rooms are close by in case something happens.
Jacen yawns then smiles up at his mother. It's crazy how fast he's grown. He's already doubled his birth weight. "Hi, baby." She greets as she smooths down his hair.
Jacen softly babbles in response, reaching out to her. He can't talk yet, but he's been testing out his skills. He practices most of the time with Sabine, who encourages him to make goofy noises to annoy Zeb.
"Your father and I have an important meeting today," Hera explains as she exits his room. "So we need to find you a babysitter."
Jacen coos, seeming to understand. Well, she knows he doesn't, but he is great at answering when a person would respond in a conversation.
She looks at him on her hip and almost runs into Kanan. "Oops. Sorry, love." She says, patting his shoulder to signal where she's at.
"I was just coming to find you so I could take him from you." He smiles as he opens his hands to her.
Hera leans Jacen to him, the child eagerly falling into Kanan's grasp. "You need to be there in fifteen minutes."
"Be where?"
"The meeting? Mon Motha is expecting both of us." Hera says as she adjusts her flight suit. She wipes Jacen's drool off her shoulder. "Find a babysitter for Jacen before our extra hands run off."
"Alright," Kanan agrees as Jacen lays his head onto his shoulder. "I'll meet you there in fifteen."
Hera slips the baby carrier onto Kanan's free shoulder, kisses his cheek, then departs.
He sighs and pats his son's back. "Who should we get to watch you, little runyip?"
Before Kanan has much time to think about it, one of their extra hands tries walking past him. "'Cuse me," Ezra says as he attempts to slide Kanan aside.
"Woah there, kid. Come back here." Kanan replies as he tugs on the back of Ezra's collar.
"Ugh. Whatever I did, I'm sorry."
Kanan furrows his eyebrows. "Is there something you want to confess?"
"No. I just wanted to get the yelling out now. I really want to check out the new base."
"You act like I yell at you constantly." Kanan scoffs. Ezra shrugs, neither agreeing nor disagreeing with that statement. He lets the silence speak for him. "Anyways, I wasn't going to scold you. I was going to assign you to baby duty."
Ezra groans. "Why?"
"Why not?" Kanan corrects with an encouraging smile. "He's adorable." He adds before bouncing Jacen in his arms. The baby opens his mouth and grins, making a noise with each bounce. "See? Hilarious."
"He is hilarious." Ezra smiles as he reaches out to have Jacen hold his finger. "But the last thing I want is to been seen carrying him around on base. I'm a Jedi, not a babysitter."
"Sorry. Gotta take it for the team this time."
"Why can't Sabine be on baby duty?"
"The carrier doesn't fit over my armor," Sabine replies as she places her helmet over her head. Before they can argue with her, she rushes past them and out of the Ghost.
"Okay. What about Zeb?" Ezra offers.
"Sorry, kid. The carrier doesn't fit on me either. It wasn't made for Lasats." Zeb shrugs as he tosses his bow rifle over his shoulder and exits the ship.
"You?" Ezra pleads.
"I would, but I have to enter in a meeting with Hera and the other generals. The last thing we need is Jacen crying mid-planning." Kanan explains with a soft frown. "Trust me, I'd rather watch Jacen than go to this meeting."
Ezra sighs, his shoulders dropping. He realizes he has no choice. He can't just abandon Spectre-7 while he goes to lunch. He's the only man for the job.
"Now front or back?" Kanan asks as he holds up the carrier.
"Front. If I'm going to be toting around the baby, I might as well see him." Ezra says as he opens his arms. Quickly and smoothly, Kanan helps strap the baby carrier onto Ezra's chest. Without any complaining, Jacen is slipped into the carrier and tightly locked in.
"Be good, Jacen. Ezra is kind enough to watch you on his break." Kanan instructs as he places his hand onto his son's face. He traces his face from top to bottom, the same way he always does when saying goodbye. Jacen coos, leaning into his touch.
Together the three of them leave the ship. A few comments are made about how adorable Jacen is, but it's not out of the ordinary. Jacen is the only baby on base currently so everyone is used to him getting a lot of attention.
As they get further into the base, Kanan and Ezra split. Kanan heads to the meeting room as Ezra goes to the mess hall with Jacen. This is where the real trouble begins. No one would dare tease Ezra with Kanan around. But now that he's gone, Ezra begins to receive some mild taunting.
"A Jedi babysitting? Didn't know that was in the description." Han smirks as he and Chewie walk past.
"Didn't know dropping shipments was in a smuggler's description." Ezra quickly fires back as he flips around to look at them.
Han stops and glares but Chewie loudly laughs as he nudges the grumpy man.
Ezra shrugs with a smile in response. "You started it." He says as Jacen begins to make bubbles with his spit.
Now that they've all stopped walking, Chewie takes this opportunity to greet Jacen. He gives a soft growl then ruffles the baby's hair. Surprisingly, Jacen doesn't cry. Instead, he giggles and grabs at the Wookie's fur.
Since Chewie is distracting the baby, Han walks over to Ezra. He leans in close and keeps his voice low. "How many people here know about my bounty?"
Ezra shakes his head as he adjusts the straps on the carrier to rest better on his shoulders. "I don't know. We landed about ten minutes ago."
Han scrunches his face. "Don't tell me you guys came in the Ghost."
Ezra laughs. "Of course we came in the Ghost. It's a lot safer than your excuse of a ship."
"The Falcon is faster than any other ship on this base, Bridger."
"Sure, Solo. Whatever helps you sleep at night." Ezra smirks as Jacen squeals in delight.
Han and Ezra both look down, watching Jacen try and reach for Chewie's hands. Han scowls as looks at his furry friend. "Don't get any ideas, Chewie. There won't be any babies riding in the Falcon. Ever."
Chewie groans and rolls his eyes. Ezra scoffs and adjusts Jacen so that he remains seated in the carrier. "I don't think you'll have to worry about anyone trusting you to watch a baby, Han."
Han seems taken back. "I could watch a baby. They don't do anything." He quickly argues as he gestures down to Jacen. "After all, they trust you. How hard could it be?" He smirks.
Jacen gurgles in response then reaches out to Han, touching him with his drool-covered hand. The man's eyes crinkle with disgust as he quickly wipes his hand on his pants.
"Yeah. Okay." Ezra replies as Jacen giggles at Chewie. He sighs and begins walking backward. "Well, I'm starved so I'm going to get something to eat. I'll catch up with you two later."
"Yeah." Han waves away, knowing that he'll see Ezra again. "Just don't bring the baby!" He shouts down the hallway as Ezra gets further away.
"Can't make you any promises!" Ezra smiles before marching forward to the mess hall. When he enters the mess hall, he sees it fuller than ever before. So many people have joined the rebellion, especially since they blew up the Death Star.
After Ezra receives his food, he stands and looks for someplace to sit. Sabine is sitting at a table closest to the door, giving him a soft wave. He makes his way through the crowd, eventually arriving at her table. He doesn't recognize most of the people sitting there, but he doesn't mind.
"How's babysitting?" She asks as she reaches out to hold Jacen's hand.
"Alright. Why don't you take him for a while?" Ezra fires back before digging into his food.
"I would, but I can't." She shrugs. "Not only does the carrier not fit, but Hera has assigned me to train the newest recruits on how to accurately shoot a blaster." She says as she gestures to the people sitting at the table.
Ezra quickly swallows then gives them a quick wave. "Hello."
"Hey." One girl replies. "Cute baby." She adds as she points to Ezra's chest.
"Oh, he's not mine." Ezra awkwardly stumbles as he looks down at Jacen. "I'm just watching him while his parents are in a meeting."
"I figured." She says before picking up her tray. She waves at Jacen then stands up from the table, finished with her meal.
"Meet me outside in two, Morwynn," Sabine says as the girl walks past her.
"Gotcha." She smiles before leaving.
Once she's out of earshot, Ezra leans forward to Sabine. "So, what's her reason for joining the rebellion?"
Sabine shrugs. "She mentioned having relatives on Alderaan. But, does anyone really need a reason for joining us anymore?"
Ezra chuckles and shakes his head. "No, I suppose not."
Sabine lets out a loud sigh, tossing her head back. "Ugh, I don't want to get back to work." She complains. "But, duty calls. I'll see you two later." She smiles as she stands up from her seat. She reaches out to Jacen, who eagerly takes her finger. "Give him some trouble. He needs it."
Ezra dramatically rolls his eyes before loudly dragging out, "Goodbye, Sabine!"
She laughs, getting the hint. "Goodbye, Ezra." She waves before walking off.
Ezra continues to eat his meal, his stomach already feeling better. Just as he's about to finish his meal, Jacen begins to whine. Ezra looks down, checking out the child. "Hey, what's wrong, kid?"
"Maybe he's hungry." A voice speaks up. Before Ezra can fire back a response, he watches Luke set down his tray beside him.
"Hey, Luke." Ezra quickly replies with a smile. Figuring Luke might be right, he slips Jacen out of the carrier and lets him sit on one of his legs. "Want some pear?" He asks the baby before offering him a small chunk.
Jacen eagerly eats the pear out of Ezra's hand, a smile already appearing on his face.
Ezra hums in delight. "Yummy, right?" He grins before giving Jacen some more.
"Gross!" Luke laughs as he watches the scene. "You just let the kid eat out of your hand?"
"He's thrown up on me multiple times." Ezra chuckles back. "I'll take drool."
Luke shrugs. "One way to look at it, I guess." He agrees before eating his own food. "So," he says between bites. "Since you're watching the baby, are we still training after lunch?"
"Shoot." Ezra groans before wiping his hands on a napkin. "Sorry, I completely forgot."
"It's cool. We can lightsaber spar tomorrow if it works better."
"No, I promised Hera I'd work on my flight runs with her," Ezra says as he shakes his head. He sighs as he bounces Jacen on his leg. "We can still spar. I'll just keep Jacen strapped to my chest."
Luke scrunches his face. "Are you sure? I would hate for anything to happen to him."
"He'll be alright." Ezra waves away. "Plus, it'll be good practice for me anyway. Maybe I'll be with the kid if we end up in another firefight on base. I'll be ready to defend with him then."
Luke raises his hands. "Whatever you say. But if he gets hurt, you have to tell Hera and Kanan."
"Tell Hera and Kanan what?"
Ezra and Luke both turn around with smiles wide on their faces. "Leia!" They loudly cheer, getting a glare from her.
"Shouldn't you be in a meeting?" Ezra asks as he rubs the back of his neck.
"It just finished." She says as she crosses her arms over her chest. "I was coming in here to grab some food when I saw you two. I figured you would be up to no good, which I'm assuming I'm right about."
"What?" Luke scoffs as he waves her off. "We were just talking about training. Nothing to worry about, Your Highness."
"Right," Leia says as she rolls her eyes. She smiles then reaches out to Jacen. "I hope they aren't poisoning you with their stupidity."
"Hey!" Luke and Ezra frown.
Leia shrugs. "Well, it's true." She smirks before walking off.
Once Luke finishes his food, the two of them head off to find Kanan. Thankfully, it doesn't take long to find him. They spot him talking with Zeb and Kallus, who greet them immediately. "Bridger. Skywalker." Kallus nods.
"Hey, Kallus." Ezra waves back.
"So, how was Jacen?" Kanan asks as he reaches forward to take Jacen out of the carrier.
"Wasn't too bad, actually," Ezra says as he helps Kanan removes the child. Jacen happily squeals as he is taken into Kanan's grasp, excited to be with his father again. "We saw a few friends and even ate some pears at lunch."
"Oh? How did he take to pears?" Kanan asks Ezra. Jacen babbles in his arms, reaching out to play with Zeb and Kallus.
"He liked them," Ezra says, taking the carrier off of his chest. "We were going to take him to train with us, but your meeting ended so we thought we'd return him."
"Wait, wait. Train with him?" Zeb asks as he turns to face Ezra.
"Yeah. I was going to keep Jacen strapped to my chest and spar with him." Ezra says as he gestures towards Luke. He then moves his arms, acting like he's using a lightsaber.
"With your lightsabers?" Zeb growls.
"Well, yeah, Zeb." Ezra scoffs. He and the Lasat lean in close, narrowing their eyes at each other. "I couldn't just leave him alone."
"Well, of course. But you can't just swing a lightsaber around him! You'll get him killed!"
"That's enough," Kanan says as he steps between the two.
They both sigh and drop their shoulders. "Sorry." They immediately apologize to each other. Even though they get along well most days, they still fight occasionally. That's what happens when you share a room for years.
"Kanan!" Hera suddenly calls out. "You're needed in the briefing room."
"Not it!" Ezra shouts in response, grabbing Luke so that they can run away.
"I can't take the baby." Zeb scoffs as the baby carrier is thrown into his arms.
"Well, someone has to watch Jacen," Kanan says. "That only leaves you and Kallus." He smiles before handing the baby off the blond man and walking away.
"Oh, great." Kallus awkwardly smiles. "Hello." He weakly waves, getting Jacen to coo in his arms.
"This will be interesting." Zeb laughs as Jacen cuddles close to Kallus.
~~~~~~~~~~~
I like to imagine that Jacen just gets tossed around. That kid is the most social baby ever. He knows nothing about stranger danger. Everyone on base has watched over him at one point or another.
