IX - A Shocking Rey-velation
Grace's 1st POV (@forcebenders, @tcwscenes)
"Hello there!"
Grace peered up. Her eyes were met with blinding light and searing heat. She was lying down in sand, a large shadow loomed over her like she was in a cave, looking out of a small hole in the ceiling, straight into the sun. Her focus came back, and above her in the bright light she saw a girl wrapped in tannish garbs. The girl pushed the walls around her and the cave she was in seemed to fall apart with ease. Grace was a little concerned. But after slowly getting to her feet she realized that she hadn't been in a cave, but had been trapped under multiple large pieces of scrap metal. Grace stepped outside, and the girl remained perched on the few upright pieces of metal, about 10 feet in the air.
Grace studied the girl's face and gasped.
"Rey? Rey!"
The girl hopped down to where Grace was standing with a puzzled look on her face.
"You know me?" she asked.
"Know you? Yeah...you...you aren't real though...I..." Grace stuttered and looked about her, confused as ever. She and Rey stood atop a massive sand dune, overlooking a plethora of ship wreckages, ranging from Mon Cala cruisers and Star Destroyers to X-wings and many variants of TIE fighters. And just above them was a tilted Star Destroyer (or the back half of one, anyway) piercing the ground like a sharp dagger. Unfortunately, the position of the sun did not allow for them to receive shade from the mountainous starship.
Grace pinched herself. And then again. A few more times. More than enough times. And one more time after that.
"Are you alright, friend?" Rey asked. "You haven't caught a sand flea infection, have you?"
Grace looked straight into Rey's eyes, "This is real isn't it? I'm actually here..."
"Well, of course you're here. Now, I don't know what you were doing under all those scraps, however."
"Yeah," Grace said slowly, "me neither." She ran her hands through her hair.
"You weren't hired by Unkar or anything like that were you? That would explain how you know me. He likes to dispose of his temporary employees in creative ways so that would also explain where I found you."
"What? No. No, nothing like that...I've just..." Grace had no idea what was going on, but she knew this was real. The blazing sun made sure she knew that. But maybe she had to play along, go with the surroundings she was placed in. Maybe I shouldn't tell Rey how I know her. How on Earth would that make me look any saner?
"I've just heard about you from other scavengers," Grace replied. "I'm one too! Not from around here though."
"Well," Rey lit up, "around here is the best place on the planet to make a living off of scavenging so you must be just brilliant at it!"
Grace smiled awkwardly. "Yeah, you could say that."
"You must be awful thirsty, ah...what's your name?"
Grace hesitated, part of her wanting to come up with a cool Star Wars name, but she couldn't think fast enough and just blurted out: "Grace!"
"Grace," Rey repeated, smiling. "Here," the scavenger handed her a water canteen, "take as much as you like, it's full!"
Expecting to be absolutely parched, Grace downed more water than she could take, before realizing she was quenched almost instantly. You'd think I'd be more thirsty than that...but I guess I haven't been here that long, have I?
Rey didn't notice though, as she was gazing off into the horizon, her hair and desert garments waving back and forth slightly as a short gust of air blew past.
"What is it?" Grace asked, a little concerned.
"I'm not sure," Rey said. "But I think something's coming..."
