poe dameron | dameron's girls
double update time!!!!
i wrote part of this after kylo ren pulled me out of the crowd at galaxy's edge last week and tried to search through my head ... yes it is another imagine based in batuu
... and it is protective!poe time. 2.1k+ words.
"It's beautiful here," you said.
Poe shrugged one shoulder as he concealed his blaster. "It's fine."
"Fine?" you scoffed. "Poe, you must've traveled the whole world by now. Surely you know something beautiful when you see it."
He smirked and cupped your chin with one hand. "'Course I do. I married you, didn't I?"
"You're gross," you said, scrunching your nose. He leaned down and kissed you quickly on the lips. "But I love you for it."
"Mhm." He kissed you again. "Have your blaster?"
"Yup," you said.
"Papa!" the high-pitched squeal of your little girl echoed across the Millennium Falcon. You and Poe turned your heads to see her, grinning wide, arms outstretched, curls bouncing wildly around her shoulders. She launched herself at him. A Daddy's girl through and through.
He swooped her off her feet and encircled her with his arms. Planting a huge kiss on her cheek, he greeted her with a, "Good morning, baby."
"Papa, are we gonna spend all day together?"
"We sure are," he said. "Just me, you, and your Mama."
"And Auntie Rey." Rey stepped out of the Falcon, slipping the strap of her staff across her back. "It seems you keep forgetting about that part."
"Forgetting? Me? No way. No way. 'Course I remember." He grabbed your hand, intertwining your fingers with his.
You laughed quietly and Rey shook her head, a fake smile on her face. With every passing day, it became more impossible for the two of them to get along. Still, they cared for one another, as much as they fought. They cared about you. And they cared about Shera.
Shera, your daughter that took after her father so much that your heart stopped when you first saw her. She was undeniably his, and she was given his mother's name to carry her legacy. She had stolen the hearts of everyone on base, especially her Uncle Finn and Auntie Rey.
Today would be all about her. General Organa had given Rey a mission to survey Batuu. A Resistance spy, Vi, had recently discovered Batuu and chosen it as the newest home of the secret base. It was untouched by the First Order.
It was safe. A good place to grow. To heal after the battle of Crait.
With Rey going off on her quiet mission, you and Poe were given the day to just heal. The two of you hadn't had a day together in a long time, and Shera had even less time with her father.
Batuu had a marketplace and workshops to entertain your daughter. Besides, it was good to show her her new home ahead of time. She was slowly growing familiar with the surroundings of the Resistance and the realities of war, and Poe insisted that was most important.
"Come on, Papa. Let's go!"
"Alright, alright. Let's go. Uh, Rey --- we will meet up back here at noon?"
She nodded. "And if I need you---"
You held up your wrist. "I've got my comm-link."
She smiled. "Be safe, you three."
"We will." You gave her a wave and then you separated.
With Poe's hand in yours and your daughter hanging on tightly to his neck, you set off for a day full of adventure on a brand new planet. A beautiful planet.
The shops varied. Some sold toys, others sold pieces of Jedi history. Shera insisted on spending a fair share of time in front of a shelf full of wooden dolls. She squealed with glee when she saw a wooden doll of her favorite Resistance solider.
"Well, that's new," Poe murmured. He picked the wooden doll of a pilot and glanced at it.
"You've joined the rest of the heroes," you said.
"It can't be me."
"The tag says Captain Poe Dameron."
"Well," he said. He handed the doll to Shera. She hugged it close to her body. "If it is me, then they forgot my promotion."
"The nerve," you joked. You stared at your daughter adoringly. "We have to get it for her. You're her hero."
Poe kissed you on top of the head. He picked Shera up, placing her on his hip, and walked to the shopkeeper. As they exchanged credits, a sound captured your attention outside. You turned your head and furrowed your brows. It couldn't be---
But it was.
A line of stormtroopers. You counted twelve. They marched up the steps above the buildings, standing on the bridge overhead. They gripped blasters in their hands. Their modulated voices spoke over the murmurs of the crowd.
"We've spotted Resistance scum nearby. If you see anything, report it to the First Order immediately."
You gasped and stumbled back into the cover of the shop. Turning on your heels, you nearly toppled over a couple of children that giggled and ran past. You caught yourself and hurried to Poe.
His worried eyes met yours and he grabbed your arm. "What? What is it?"
"Stormtroopers," you whispered.
His eyes widened and he looked over your head. His heart jumped to his throat as he saw them weave their way through the crowd. He put down Shera and yanked the scarf away from around his neck. Lowering himself on his knees, he wrapped it around her head, hiding her hair and face.
"What do I do?"
"Take her back to the Falcon. If the First Order approaches, leave. Even if I am not there."
"Poe---"
"I have to find Rey," he said. He stood up and shrugged out of his jacket. He handed it to you.
"Poe, I am not leaving without you. I---"
"I'll come find you!" he hissed. He grabbed your shoulders and shook his head. His face was pained. "I'm sorry, baby, but we have to keep her safe."
"I know."
His eyes squeezed shut tightly as he kissed you on the forehead. His fingers trembled as he looked down at his daughter, who reached for him with grabby hands. "Shera, you listen to your Mama. No matter what."
"Don't go, Papa. I wanna come!"
"I have to find Auntie Rey. I'll come back for you and your mother. I promise." He kissed her. "I love you both. So much."
"We love you," you whispered. You picked your daughter up and pressed her face against the dip of your shoulder. You and Poe locked one final, pained glance. "Stay safe."
"I will. I promise --- I will find you two again."
But when he said it like that, it didn't sound like he was so sure. Your breath was stolen from your lungs as he turned and disappeared in the crowd. Away from you, away from Shera. In the midst of the First Order.
You swallowed your fear. "Hold on to me, baby. Mama is gonna get you home safely."
"I'm scared---"
"Shhh, it's okay." You looked down at how she gripped on tightly to the doll of Poe. You stepped into the sunshine. It was too bright and you couldn't see for a long moment. But when you could, the reflection of light against the stormtrooper armor was blinding and terrifying.
They were going from civilian to civilian, traveller to traveller. Questioning them on what they have seen and where their allegiance lies. You were terrified.
Handling the First Order was one thing. Handling them with your baby in your arms was another thing entirely.
The stormtroopers seemed to be multiplying. You ducked under an awning of colorful fabric that hung overhead a small set of stairs. You ran down them quickly and slipped between the walls of two buildings.
The Falcon wasn't too far away. But as you stepped out of the shadows of the alley, you saw his ship. Kylo Ren's. And in front of it was the Supreme Leader himself, staring down at a crowd of people that either stared at him with respect or fear.
"No," you whispered. Your daughter lifted her head and looked at him. She gripped you tighter. You pushed her head back down and turned.
"Wait right there!"
You didn't. You couldn't.
"Stop in the name of the Supreme Leader!"
You moved faster. You had never moved so fast in your life. What was in your arms was far more important than your own life.
But it didn't matter. A stun blast knocked you forward. You turned your body to keep from crushing Shera, who screamed as you fell. She grabbed your face. "Mama!"
You lifted your head and looked back. Two stormtroopers were running towards you. And behind them was Supreme Leader Kylo Ren.
Your limbs were jelly and all you could do was scream. "Run, Shera. Run! Mama will be right behind you. Go!"
She obeyed. With fear in her teary eyes, she sprinted forward without you, her little legs taking bounding steps forward to get her as far away as possible. She knew how dangerous these men were. She knew.
You forced yourself up and fell against the wall. You moved and with every step, you gained more footing. You rushed up the stairs and turned fast. They were right behind you.
"Stop, Resistance scum!"
In the thickness of the crowd, it was difficult to breathe. You shoved everyone out of your way. They screamed and argued and shoved back, but none of it mattered. The stormtroopers were at your heels and your little girl was out of your arms.
It didn't take long to spot her. Ducked behind a stack of shipping crates, she cowered from the First Order ships that flew overhead. They were bringing more of them.
You rushed by the crate and yanked your daughter up and into your arms. She screamed as you pressed her against you and turned right, darting into a second alleyway. You stole a glance behind you and saw that you had lost the stormtroopers.
You breathed out in relief and turned back. Moving your feet quickly and silently, you stepped out of the shadow and back into the sunshine---
Only to have Kylo Ren block you off mid-step. He ignited his lightsaber. As it hummed and crackled with life, sparking red against the walls, you gasped and staggered backwards. Shera screamed in your arms.
"How brave," he said. "But a hopeless attempt to escape. Commander Dameron's wife. I would recognize you anywhere. And this... this child of his."
He was backing you up to the other side of the alley. You wanted to run, but the pause of your heels spinning your body would give him a perfect opportunity to strike. You'd be killed and then he'd have your daughter. She couldn't protect herself.
"Spare her," you tried. "Kill me --- just spare her."
"Spare her? She will either be killed or placed as a valuable number in our stormtrooper program. The daughter of the one who destroyed Starkiller Base. Think they will let her last?"
He raised his lightsaber above his head. You screamed and turned your body, shielding your daughter with your body and gripping her tight. If this was the way it ended, you would protect her until the bitter end.
A scream of anger burst out of the figure that darted between you and Kylo Ren. You turned your head and saw Poe's back, curved against the pressure of Kylo Ren's lightsaber as he sank it across your husband's chest.
"No!" you roared in horror. You turned around, preparing to see Poe crumble at your feet.
Instead, you saw the blue sparks clash against the red. With the Skywalker lightsaber held tightly in his grasp, he shoved with all of his strength. "Get away from them!"
Kylo staggered backwards. Poe stood in front of you, seething with anger. He stalked forward, slowly raising the lightsaber to strike again --- only to toss the weapon over his head. It landed in the outstretched hand of Rey, who stood behind Kylo Ren, waiting.
He turned his head and she attacked fearlessly, angrily. You grabbed Poe's arm and he turned to look at you. He was so relieved as his hand met the back of your neck and he pulled you against him. You sobbed loudly.
"Poe---"
"You're alright," he said. He kissed the side of your head and looked over you and Shera quickly. "My girls. You're alright. Thank God you're alright."
"Papa," Shera cried.
"Come on. Back to the Falcon now."
Together now, the two of you ran hand-in-hand, your daughter in your arms, her pilot doll in her grasp. A fight broke out amongst the travellers as Resistance soldiers and stormtroopers battled against one another.
Your daughter stared at them all, eyes wide, world changing, held by the two Resistance heroes that would one day inspire her to fight for freedom. Just like her father and mother before her.
