(XXIII) False Leads

"We watched the checkpoint for about an hour, trying to figure out the best way to get Kilo inside the control tower so he could search for the files. The clones had a timed patrol circuit. And that's where we found our chance.

Every ten minutes, the clones would change their positions, and in one of the rotations, one of the clones would park behind a wall in the industrial zone. Far enough away that he was out of sight of the other two. The only problem was that to enter the industrial sector we had to have identification... and that would be impossible to get it. But still, there were other ways to cross.

A little further from the checkpoint was a grate large enough for me to cross. It was made up of wide metal bars, but they weren't rivals for the power of my saber laser. When I checked that there was no one in the vicinity, I courted the bars and crossed to the other side without making a sound. Kilo stayed near the observation tower, waiting for my signal, and not close enough to attract the attention of the guards.

Once ready, I waited for the guards to do their rotations, and when the clone approached where I was. I hit his head hard enough to knock him unconscious.

It's funny, but those generation 1 headsets were incredibly uncomfortable. Their plates were too close to our heads and any blow was felt strongly. Of course, it could stop a weak blaster, but a blunt blow was definitive.

Before the clone fell to the ground, I grabbed it under the armpits, but without realizing it I dropped the metal tube that I hit it with and it collided with a container causing a loud noise. Which alerted the guards on the other side.

Clone 1: - Hey. Max. What was that noise? - I hurriedly thought of an answer to give him.

Rage: - He was a worker. He let some metal pieces fall. -

Clone 2: - It must be the old Spencer. He always stumbles over and over again. -

Rage: - He was. - I followed their conversation while I put on the other clone's armor.

I was talking to the other clones like I was one of them. In the end...all we had the same voice. I tried to humor them until finally the time for the round ended and I had to go the other way, but I had a better idea.

Clone 2: - Hey. Max. Why are you standing there? - He told me when he saw that I did not move from my place.

Rage: - Oh. Sorry. I was distracted. -

Clone 2: - Well. Leave laziness and go for... -

Before he finished speaking, I used the blaster DC-15S in stun mode and shot the other clone. And once out of combat. I put it inside one of the garbage cans next to clone Max. I also shot a stunner for good measure. Finally, I went the other way.

Clone 1: - Max. What are you doing? Are you 3 min late? -

Rage: - Excuse me, Sergeant. I was helping Spencer pick up things. - I told him to try to hide it after seeing his rank painted on his chest... but what I did was screw up.

Clone 1: - Sergeant? Since when do you call me sergeant? - It was clear that I had already made a mistake... and to make matters worse:

????: - Another busy afternoon, huh Sergeant? - The other clone and I turned around and saw a human who spoke to the sergeant.

Clone 1: - Spencer? But if a few moments ago you left pieces of metal fall at the other side. -

Spencer: - What are you talking about? My turn starts now. -

At that point things couldn't get any worse. My cover had plummeted, and it was only a matter of time before they discovered me, so before the sergeant could react I shot him with the stunned blaster. The old Spencer was shocked, but I had no choice but to stun him too, or it would be the end of everything. I hurried to hide the two men inside the tower before someone discovered me. Fortunately the road was not very busy, and once it was clear, I signaled to Kilo to come over.

Kilo connected to the network and started looking for the files while I checked the vitals of the old man and the clone. Fortunately they were stable and would wake up in a couple of hours. Until finally:

Kilo: - I found it. -

Rage: - Do you have the file? -

Kilo: - Yes. I'm figuring it out.

Rage: - There is no time for that. Download the full file and deciphers in another terminal. We can't stay here any longer. -

Kilo finished downloading the file and retreated towards the city while I returned to the dumpster where I left the other clones. When I crossed the door, I found myself face to face with a worker, who looked at me impressed when he saw the hurry I was in.

Rage: - Go ahead. - I told him after clearing my throat.

The worker hurried off towards the city and I took the opportunity to remove my armor and put my tunic back on and return to Kilo.

I still feel a little sorry for what I did to my brothers. But with luck they would wake up in a few hours with no consequence other than a little headache. But the truth I didn't have many options.

When I was finally able to meet Kilo, we headed to one of those places What was it called? Ah.In an Internet cafe, and with a terminal free, Kilo was able to decipher the data.

Kilo: - Correct digital file. The entry of Kaminoana Hina is confirmed several rotations ago. Apparently, she took advantage of Law 14 of Combat Traumas and retired from the army. -

Rage: - That Hina is smarter than she seems. Very well. Can you locate her? -

Kilo: - Yes. He withdrew to apartment 541 of the RT-34 block of sector 6. The residential area next to the largest commercial sector of Coruscant. -

Rage: - Great... more problems. -

Kilo: - Wait... there's something else. -

Anger: - What's going on? -

Kilo: - According to these records... Hina hasn't returned to her apartment in more than four nights... and there is no record of any other possible location. -"
