(XI) Underground Massacre
"Kilo and I moved south of Mos Eisley, to a mountain range that stretched for several kilometers above the sea of dunes. I thought finding the abandoned mines would be a problem, but to our luck, the old rusty rails were still perceptible over the desert sand.
Finally, we found the network of abandoned mines. Determining the correct one was not very difficult, since there were two pirates guarding the entrance. We position ourselves at the height of the cliffs to observe and determine how many would face us.
At that time I was only wearing the neoprene mesh over my body plus the tunic, I felt somewhat "naked" compared to the weight of the armor I wore daily. On the other hand, my only available weapons were the lightsaber and an E-5 blaster, awkward but useful. Kisu also carried an E-5, but being a protocol droid, I preferred that he stay away from combat.
I approached hiding behind the plateaus and I positioned myself on the entrance of the mine. I hadn't noticed, but the projection of my shadow on the sand alerted one of the guards. When he leaned out to look up, I was already falling from above wielding the lightsaber. With a single movement I cut him in two, and killed the other before he could raise his weapon or raise the alarm. To my luck, no one noticed inside the cave.
To tell you the truth, wielding a lightsaber I thought was going to be more complicated, but it wasn't much different than the stun batons in training."
In the recording, Rage turns around and seems to be talking to someone else.
"What? It's true. I didn't have the technique or skills of a Jedi. But I could wield the saber. Anyway, I will continue.
I slowly made my way into the mine trying to make as little noise as possible. And soon I found them. Inside, there were some makeshift cells were dozens of children and many more people stayed. The conditions were deplorable and the bad smell was unbearable. The bodies of those who couldn't survive were decomposing right next to the living. And many were stunted, as if they had not eaten in a long time.
While I was looking at the insane scene, one of the pirates came to the place and saw me. Before he could react, I pulled out my blaster and fired at him. The noise echoed throughout the place, and the rest of the pirates knew it was there.
In less than a few seconds, the rest of the pirates arrived at the place. They started shooting at me from deep in a long tunnel, and I had to hide behind a metal box. I couldn't stick my head out, so I had to find another solution.
I looked up and shot the light bulb that was illuminating the area where I was, and the electrical system shorted out. The pirates kept firing blindly down the corridor, but I decided to withdraw.
Pirate Chief: - That bastard is escaping. Follow him. I want his head on my desk. -
The voice seemed to be that of the band leader. The rest continued to believe that I had fled the mine. But they made a terrible mistake.
Approaching a turn, I came out suddenly carrying the lightsaber. I knew the impact that seeing a lightsaber at such close range could cause, plus I was at an advantage, since they couldn't use their blasters properly.
One by one. I started killing them all without mercy. I remember feeling a deep hatred towards them at the time. The inhumane conditions with which they treated their prisoners made my blood boil, and made me want to kill them all. And that I did. When the crushed bodies of all the pirates lay at my feet, I heard him one more time.
Pirate Boss: - Guys. Have you finished with that bastard yet? -
At that moment I came out from behind the wall and saw him. Standing a few meters from me. The light emitted from the saber illuminated his terrified face. He froze with fear, though he was sweating cold and his hands were shaking. He tried to point his blaster at me, but I sliced him in two at the waist before he could blink.
With all the pirates dead I was able to calm down a bit. Around me the walls, the ceiling and the floor were illuminated with a peculiar red light, it should be the emergency system. Or so I thought.
When I raised up the lightsaber it had lost its characteristic green color, and was glowing a deep scarlet. I looked at it strangely, shocked. I remember that even my hand was shaking a little. But I didn't want to think about that moment.
I cut through the makeshift cell bars and released the prisoners, but instead they stuck to the back of their cell and kept as far away from me as possible. They were terrified by my presence. The light of my saber was the only lighting in the place except for the few rays of sun that came from the entrance.
Despite feeling a bit annoyed by their lack of appreciation, I understood how they must have felt. I was afraid of myself too. With what eyes would they be looking at me at that moment? Back then. I didn't understand the fear that the figure of a Sith could create in others.
Knowing that I would not be able to talk to them, I withdrew to the bottom of the mine. With any luck, the pirates would have saved something valuable that would be of use to me. And I was right.
Among the dozens of boxes I found, I was able to recover some credits, some decent food, and a few explosives. There were also a few guns, but they weren't any better than the E-5 I had, so I just left them behind.
When I finally got back, the cells were empty, and I assumed everyone had managed to escape. I felt great relief in my chest at that moment, but when I left the mines, I was met with an unexpected surprise."
