Chap. 83 - Dunes of Despair
For years, an overwhelming silence reigned over the desolate wastelands of the planet ofOrdinary. Once full of life and beautiful fertile lands, it was now nothing more than a devastated reminder of what it once was. Only the rumble of the wind shook the sandy plains, dragging with it microscopic grains that got inside the nostrils and lodged in the lungs, conditions that would be fatal for organics after a very long exposure.
But this time it was different. This time, the sound of sparks crackling and fire devouring what little food he had within his reach interrupted the monotonous panorama ofOrdinary. Now, a strange curtain of black smoke rose over the endless desert dunes and was blown to the confines of those barren lands by the constant wind. There, in the distance of the desert and in the center of everything... the remains of an Imperial class shuttlecentinel they broke in in the constant landscape of golden sands.
A constant calm made the hairs on the body stand up. The wind filtered through the cracks, causing eerie sounds interrupted only by the crackling of the fire, which danced violently before the beat of the wind. There was no trace of movement. No sign of life... Just... a constant emptiness. Until:
BAM BAM BAM
The rumble of metal shook the wastelands. The rear door of the ship, stuck and powerless, was dented from the inside by a superhuman force. Each blow left a new mark. A new deformation. Until a pronounced crack ripped through the metal from top to bottom.
Suddenly, metallic fingers emerged from within, like the legs of a tarantula escaping its burrow. Metallic fingers that gripped tightly onto the metal, making it creak and scream in pain. A firm grip like steel, which little by little began to tear the plates of the gate until it formed a crack large enough for a being two meters tall to pass through.
From inside thecentinel, humanoid figures wearing white armor stepped out into the scorching desert. The Punitive Guard droids were the first to leave to analyze the terrain, closely followed by Holdo, Boss, Fixer, Bly and Kurt, who remained in one piece thanks to the protection provided by the droids themselves. Behind them, the rest of the commandos came out, carrying Sev's body, Wag too, and the quiver that previously contained part of Icarus' consciousness.
Of the thirty commando droids that began this mission, only twenty managed to escape from the Fondor orbital station. And now, only seven managed to get out of the shuttle, including Alpha herself, who was carrying the dying Wag Too, and Delta, who despite having a shattered arm, was doing everything possible to remove the body of the Imperial security droid from the increasingly aggressive flames.
Fixer: - This is a disaster. -
Boss: - At least we're alive. Commander Bly. Were you able to identify where we jumped before we crashed? -
Bly: - Apparently we are inOrdinary...Or what's left of it. - He said ironically as he saw the desolate wasteland.
Boss: - We need high ground. Fixer. Are they in condition? -
Fixer: - Si, Boss. -
Boss: - Climb that dune and look at everything around us. Any reference point will be helpful. -
Fixer: - On the way. -
While several watched the clone commando leave, the sound of the meta being torn from its base caught the attention of those present. With his only functional hand, Delta ripped the chest plates off what remained of the Imperial droid, and before anyone could ask a question, he removed what looked like a chip from inside the droid.
Delta: - Lieutenant Kurt. - He caught the young man's attention. - On this storage device is the general's database. Only he will be able to decode it and know everything he was able to download from the Fondor station database. It is your maximum responsibility that it arrives safely in the hands of the general. Along with this. -
Kurt saw with amazement and fear the outstretched arm of the droid, which offered him not only the data storage device, but also the general's lightsaber. The man could feel the weight of responsibility on his shoulders. An overwhelming weight, accompanied by the looks of all those present who were still conscious.
That device contained all the information he had come for. Everything he had fought for for the last twelve hours. Everything... at his hands.
Despite his fears, Kurt took both items in an act of courage andguard in a safe place. Under no circumstances would he let anything happen to him. Thus he would have to intervene his physical integrity for it.
Fixer: - Boss. - His sudden voice cut the tension of the moment.
Boss: - What did you see? -
Fixer: - Nothing encouraging. We are surrounded by desert in all directions. He detected no signs of life in any direction. -
Boss: - How much time do we have left?for the night? -
Fixer: - Half rotation... Maybe less. There is a rock formation in the opposite direction of the twin suns. It's the only thing that stands out on the ground. -
Holdo: - We're in trouble. Can't we contact their allies? -
Bly: - The communication devices we have are not powerful enough. -
Holdo: - So...? Are we stuck here? - The idea was just chilling, even so:
Bly: - I don't know. I managed to transmit our coordinates to the Oasis before we crashed... But I can't guarantee that they would have received it. -
Holdo: - This gives me a bad feeling. -
Boss: - We can't count on help. For now we are on our own. We will head to the mountains. Any shelter will be welcome. Our supplies won't last long either... So we must hurry. -
Alpha: - My energy module has an independence of seven days. Delta of five given its failure. But the other units only have 4 days of batteries. -
Bly: - We're against the clock then. -
Boss: - Let's not waste time. On going. -
Walking on the soft sand is a titanic task, especially under the hot sun and the heat that the surface itself radiates on passersby. Fortunately, the clone commando armors had modules to help acclimatize the user, although this would not last forever, and it was best to save batteries as the situation worsened. Plus, it would be unfair to leave Holdo, Bly, and Kurt without this outlet. After all, stormtrooper armor did not have this advantage.
Wearing the imperial armor made no sense, so they did not hesitate to leave it behind, leaving only the black mesh that covered their bodies and any piece of cloth at their disposal to cover themselves from the sun.
Using some planks they tore from the ship itself, the remaining commando droids made two makeshift stretchers so they could carry Sev and Wag Too more easily, and thus not use up the entire battery of a single droid in the process.
Fortunately, the bright sun on Sev's face made him wake up. Somewhat dehydrated, but in good condition. Apparently the blow he received only left him with a momentary headache, but nothing serious. Something that could not be said of the Lurmen.
Wag Too showed no signs of waking up. In fact, he didn't even flinch every time one of the droids carrying the stretcher took a wrong step and it wobbled. Of those present, Fixer had the most knowledge of medicine, but he wasn't an expert or anything like that. Most of what he knew was first aid and healing minor injuries, so the condition of the lurmen was unknown to him.
In the first instance, its anatomy was different, even though it was humanoid. Fixer thought it might be something wrong with the way the inquisitor grabbed his head. Perhaps in the process a vertebra would have been damaged, which would be catastrophic and perhaps fatal damage in the medium term. Or perhaps his body was still trying to dissipate the trauma he went through... Truth be told... no one could know, but a makeshift metal frame around his neck could perhaps prevent further evils.
It took almost a day for the group to cross the blanket of dunes and unstable sand to reach what looked like a natural formation of plateaus.Antagonistically to the hugger Heat of the day, the night turned out to be quite cold, so they had to find shelter before the sun sank below the horizon again.
The droids were going out of their way to keep the organics safe, but it was costing them a lot of energy. Two of the units went out just a few hours after finding a cave that would serve as shelter for a while, and the remaining three did not have much time left either.
The second night was just as cold, but the small grotto between the rocks proved to be quite an effective shelter. So much so that some creatures on the planet thought about taking shelter in that place, but in the end they ended up being a good hot meal for the organics. They had to survive as best they could, and time was not on their side. But on the morning of the second day...
Sev: - Looks like we have company. - He said as he returned to the small shelter.
Fixer: - Let me guess... Imperials. -
Sev: - Ufff... You are a genius. -
Holdo: - Are you serious? Could they take it more seriously? -
Sev: - If we had done so we would have succumbed to madness a long time ago. -
Holdo: - Men... - He said with a somewhat annoyed tone.
Boss: - What is the situation? -His voice did impose seriousness on his men.
Sev: - An Imperial destroyer is located above the planet's orbit. The shuttles and troop transports have already begun the disembarkation. -
Kurt: - Is this a joke? There must be millions of Imperials there. -
Sev: - Well... That's if you don't count the walkers, fighters, bombers, vehicles, etcetera, etcetera... -
Boss: - For yourself... It's enough. -
Sev: - Yes, sir. -
Boss: - There's not much we can do. We cannot be detected. Avoid lights at night. Do not leave the shelter unless necessary. This is a battle we cannot win. -
That was a task easier said than done. For two whole days everyone remained hidden. The droids were disconnected until necessary, since in cases of emergency their participation in combat could be of vital importance. But no matter how much he hid... It wouldn't work.
Inside the Imperial destroyer command post:
Officer 1: - Mister. A probe has detected the insurgents among the caves of a natural system in the northwest of the planet. -
Howlhell: - Understood. Prepare everything for the attack. -
Officer 2: - Eh... sir... Shall we launch a massive attack against a few insurgents? -
Howlhell: - No... Prepare a shuttle and a company... I will take care of these... Personally. -
It was only a matter of time. Boss's group was unaware that the probe had detected them, but Sev was quickly drawn to the way the Imperial ships were descending. Surely they had already located them or had an idea of where they were, something that did not go unnoticed by the clone commando with all his experience.
In just twenty minutes, all available weapons were checked and calibrated. The droids powered up and armed themselves for battle. The conflict was going to be imminent, and although they had the advantage of terrain and cover, this did not take away from the fact that there were millions of Imperials in the sector. Although it was a strange relief to see only one company descend from the imperial transports. They didn't know what they were up to... but it sure wouldn't be anything good.
And while the battlefield was preparing for an impossible resistance, everyone ignored the eyes that, from a distance, observed everything that was happening with a mixture of anger and desire for revenge.
