Chap. 8 - Lost in the Mountains
Icarus: - Are you sure? I do not calculate that it is how to go to the city and return. My path will probably take me from one war to another. - The lurmen made a mocking face.
Wag Too: - I'm not intimidated. I've been in wars before. As I said, years ago I fought alongside my comrades, clones and jedi against a separatist battalion. - Then his face changed to a somewhat serious and melancholic expression. - Besides, I've been trapped in this rock for so long that I think I've lost my reason for being. I don't know if I should stay or go. Looking for something I don't know what it is... So... If your destiny has a just cause, I won't be afraid to go by your side. - The lurmen looked at the droid showing a sincere smile, something that Icarus took a long time to process. - Also, someone has to keep their circuits in good order. Ha ha. -
In a couple of hours, the droid and the lurmen collected everything they were supposed to need for a long journey. Both Icarus and Wag Too agreed that the Trandoshan pirates who attacked them a few weeks they must have some kind of shelter or lair. A place to hide and rest, and with luck, he sure had a ship at his disposal. There was even the possibility that they belonged to a larger criminal group, in which case they had to act with caution, because they did not want to be involved in a battle that would end their path even before it began.
Wag Too didn't have any knowledge about it, he just knew that the Trandoshans used to use two landspeeders to reach the city from the north entrance. They usually used to scavenge for scrap and parts just like the lurmen, but he always tried to stay aloof from trouble. The meeting with them last time was a blunder on his part. Yet while Wag Too despondently counted his misfortune, Icarus seemed to be computing something else.
Wag Too: - Is something wrong? -
Icarus: - You said that the Trandoshans used to come to the city in landspeeders. However, I have no visual record of any landspeeders when we checked that area of the city more than ten days ago. -
Wag Too: - Maybe someone else took them... It's very likely that other scrappers like me also live around... I mean... The capital city of Mygeeto is huge... They could well spend years going through the ruins and never find anyone else. -
Icarus: - That's correct, but I think what you're saying about landspeeders is unlikely. -
Wag Too: - What do you mean? -
Icarus: - A landspeeder on a ruined planet is too valuable an asset to simply leave it in one place in the hope that no one will take it... The Trandoshans may not be the most intelligent species of all, but they know very well the hazards of being a bounty hunter or pirate. If I had to choose a logical option, I would say that it is 86% probable that at least two of them took care of the landspeeders. -
Wag Too: - Good. That's not a very difficult conclusion but...where do you want to come with all this? -
Icarus: - If I'm right, that's proof enough to know that they have a leader and even a structured organization. -
Wag Too: - Wait... Wait. Are you drawing those conclusions just because of that? -
Ícaro: - As I said... 86%. Taking into account all the registers that I have of the Trandoshans in my data memory. -
Wag Too: - Good. It's not nice to hear, but at least we know it won't be coming in and taking what they would have kept in their shelter. If we only had an idea of don... -
Icarus: - Twelve kilometers to the northeast. - The lurmen looked at him incredulously.
Wag Too: - What? -
Icarus: - The refuge of the Trandoshans. It is twelve kilometers to the northeast. - Wag Too simply looked at him, thinking that it was impossible for him to reach that conclusion so easily. -
Wag Too: - How? -
Icarus: - I have a record of the topography of the land before the massive attack. If the geology remains intact, to the northeast there is a small limestone mountain system, with the properties optimal for cave formation (...) - In less than five minutes, Icarus gave the Lurmen a detailed geology lesson, causing him a severe headache with all the information he was trying to process. - (...) and being reptiles. They are most likely hiding there. -
Wag Too: - And do you think they are there just by assumption? - He said, only being able to understand the first and last part of the droid's explanation.
Ícaro: - I don't think... I calculate. I don't make assumptions either... I just enter data and analyze it in the current situation. So that's our best chance. -
Wag Too had no way of accepting the droid's prosecution, but he also had no way of refuting it. Although it is true that the lurmen explored many areas around the capital city in all those years, and even remembered the mountainous system he was referring to, he never dared to enter for fear of getting lost or that the night would take him unawares. But at this point, it looked like Icarus had a solid footing, so they just started their long walk to the northeast of the city.
Both Icarus and Wag TooThey had a common concern. If the droid's idea was true, many pirates could be hiding in that place and neither of them was exactly a soldier.
The lurmen carried with him his trusty Ambano Phasic-Pulse Blaster which he used to hunt down small prey. A little big for the little being, but he made up for it with a big precision. On the other hand, the projectiles that Wag Too used were of his own creation; a version he cobbled together with found scrap, much less lethal than the disintegration caused by the original rifle ammunition, but strong enough to kill his target if hit in the correct place.
On the other hand, Icarus was carrying two blasters whose models he didn't even recognize. He had taken them from the Trandoshans he defeated, but the lack of ammunition was going to be a problem if the fighting dragged on too long. But what worried him the most was the malfunction of his optical sensors. By having one that didn't work, another with some defect that he couldn't describe, and only one in good condition, he computed the many possibilities in which his aim could be affected. Ultimately, he knew he could use Ki-Adi-Mundi's saber hidden in a compartment on his forearm, but that would only be like a desperate measure, as he had no knowledge of lightsaber combat other than wielding it as if it were a riot baton.
It took them almost four Earth hours to reach the southeastern part of the mountain system, but something was not right. Not even Icarus was able to compute the effects that the massive attack on the planet had provoked. The mountain system, as it stood in the headquarters computer records, had changed. With just a glance he was able to identify new plateaus, valleys and even slopes, which are not supposed to be in place. Limestone is not particularly "resistant", so a massive attack could have caused many underground caverns to collapse, leading to a restructuring of the relief. From that point on, Icarus knew that the map he had retrieved from the records would be of no use to them.
Wag Too: - Well... And now towards where? - He asked when he saw the immensity of the region and the hundreds of possible routes to choose.
Icarus: - I don't know. -
Wag Too: - Good. It's time for an expert to handle it. - He said with a certain mocking tone.
The life of the lurmen was "rudimentary" in many ways. Despite the advanced technologies that littered the galaxy, their species was relatively young and adhered to the ancient ways. As old as time itself. Hunting was a daily chore of Wag Too's life, and he was experienced enough to pick up the trail of his prey with ease. Very useful skill in such a situation.
Wag Too: - In that sense. - He exclaimed confidently pointing with his hand to one of the paths that zigzagged between the mountains.
Following the instinct of Wag Too, the peculiar duo entered the routes and screams of the steep mountains. The terrain was difficult to access, and unlike the light Lurmen, Icarus had great difficulty making his way over the rugged terrain without being blocked by vegetation or entangled in his metal plates.
Wag Too: - Don't stay behind. - He spoke to him from the top of a tree while looking for the way to go.
Ícaro: - I have more problems than usual. Are you sure this is the right path? -
Wag Too: - Yeah. - He said with a confident tone.
Icarus: - How do you know? -
Wag Too: - Because I know. -
The lurmen jumped from the tree to a smaller one. Slipping through the vines, he began to advance through the treetops until he was out of the droid's line of sight. Icarus simply wasn't able to compute such strange behavior.Break away at that point it was too dangerous. "What is that idiot thinking?" computed for itself.
Icarus tried to follow Wag Too, but the further he went, the vegetation grew thicker and thicker. To the point that the bushes completely blocked his way. Beginning to experience the "irritation", Icarus pulled his lightsaber from the compartment and brandished it to clear any vegetation in his path. So much was his concentration that he barely noticed that he cut several trees in his path, realizing it only when they were gone shuddered against the floor.
Several minutes after following the straight line, Icarus was able to reach the ledge of a ravine with a wonderful view of a huge valley covered by a thick layer of trees. And lying on the cliff, was Wag Too.
Ícaro: - Can I know what are...? -
Wag Too: - Shhhh. - He gestured forcefully, ordering the droid to shut up.
Icarus put the lightsaber away once more and lay down on the ground. He crept gently over the grass until he finally reached where the lurmen was.
Icarus: - You found it. Amazing work. - He whispered to his partner.
From the ledge, both were able to see a huge, almost circular hole in the ground several meters in diameter. It looked like a natural formation, made by the force of nature without the intervention of heavy machinery.
Wag Too: - But we have a problem. -
Icarus: - Yes. I can see. -
Both the lurmen and the droid were able to see at least a dozen Trandoshans at the entrance to the cavern. The pirates seemed unaware of their presence. Instead, they played gambling cards or fought among themselves while getting drunk on any kind of cheap liquor, ignorant of the situation in the galaxy. And to one side of the entrance, a large Kestrel Nova model ship.
