Chap. 78 - Claustrophobia
Boss: - And you are...? - He asked doubtfully when he saw how that strange imperial security droid extended his hand in greeting.
Holdo: - Commander, this is General Icarus. He is in charge of this operation. -
Sev: - It must be a joke. - He couldn't contain himself when he heard this. - A droid in command? Now I've seen it all. -
Icarus: - I understand your confusion. But I assure you that my team is more than capable of carrying out this task. -
Fixes: - A security droid, a Gong droid and a sycophant. I find it hard to believe. No offense. -
Kurt: - Hey. I don't know what the problem is, but... -
The impetuous young man really had little patience. One that shook vigorously at the war veteran's comment, but his puppy squeaks were overshadowed when the clone himself gave him a murderous look. Kurt may have had experience in war and dirty tricks. But here, in front of those who stood before him, he was just an inexperienced rookie.
Icarus: - I understand your concerns. But for this mission we must integrate as much as we can. Do you already have the location of the target? -
The one who seemed to be the leader of the clones did not look very convinced. And it was not surprising, because as a clone that he was, trusting a droid was not something he viewed favorably. But as a soldier he was, he had a mission to fulfill.
Boss: - Very good. This is what we know. -
According to the words of the clone command, the files of this new weapon were highly kept in the maximum security shipyards of the space station. A restricted area with great security and different access codes for different areas. A place where the Empire gathered its best engineers for the development of weapons and military technology. If infiltrating such a place was complicated, reaching your destination would be quite a challenge.
Thanks to the information that Fixes was able to hack, they had at their disposal a map of the area, including several key points such as research and development areas. Although there were areas so encrypted that not even the clone commando with his knowledge could access it. Areas that Icarus did not take long to reveal after a few minutes of hacking. He was an expert after all. And the imperial systems were not very secure to say the least. At least not in this era where it was thought that there would be no major opponents to resist their cause.
And so, after several minutes of planning and discussion, they were ready to operate.
With some basic hacking, Icarus managed to obtain the credentials of a maintenance worker, who used to work with chemical compounds in the processing plant. A perfect alibi, since said work required protective equipment and the individual in question was not present at the facilities.
Fixer was the right man for this task. Disguised in a heavy protective suit and accompanied by little Gonk, they approached the entrance door where two stormtroopers were on guard.
Stormtrooper: - identification? -
The commando clone showed the card modified with the code that Icarus implanted in him, which the guard analyzed on a portable device.
Stormtrooper: - Aren't you supposed to be on vacation? - He asked when checking the computer.
Fixes: - What can I say... I need the extra credits. -
Although it was a somewhat simple justification, it was very accurate. The guard did not ask much more, since it was no mystery to anyone that the Empire was not very generous with its salaries, so he let the worker and his automechanical assistant pass without asking many questions.
Once inside, they acted like any other worker, following the foreman's instructions and even greeting one or another absent-minded worker who mistook him for the original owner of the identification he was carrying. Wag Too, on the other hand, just... did what any other Gonk droid would do. Walking from one place to another and getting in the way from time to time. Until they both reached the designated point.
Near the bathrooms, in a moderately crowded area, there was an airlock elevated about three meters above ground level. When the hallway was completely clear, and since there were no security cameras in that place for obvious reasons, the Lurmen emerged from its disguise and scrambled up using the clone as support.
A couple of screws weren't going to stop Wag Too, but the difficult area made it quite difficult, and the footsteps of someone quickly approaching alerted the pair. The nerves were shot, especially for the Lurmen, who was not used to this type of situation under the clone's verbal pressure. The footsteps of the strangers became louder and louder. Fortunately, Wag Too was able to open the airlock in time, although as he entered the narrow air shaft he dropped the lid causing a slight bang.
Worker 1: - Did you hear that? -
Worker 2: - Hey... You. What was that noise? -
Fixer: - Oh... Sorry. It was my stomach. -
Of all the possibilities, and he couldn't think of anything better.
Worker 2: - Oh man. Was it really your insides? You must be dead inside. -
Fixer: - Yes, hehe. Something definitely didn't sit right with me. -
Worker 1: - Good. At least the bathroom is right here. -
Fixer: - Sure... That's why I'm here. But I'll be back as soon as I feel better again. -
The two workers believed the story, and to tell the truth, it was quite convincing, so they left, leaving the "sick man" tied behind their backs.
Fixer: - That dwarf will pay me for this. - He grumbled to himself.
Meanwhile, inside the ventilation ducts.
Wag Too: - Icarus, I'm already inside. - He whispered into the communicator so as not to attract attention.
Icarus: - Understood. Follow my instructions. -
Although not as effective as his tactical super droid body, Icarus could access the status of the facilities and have access to much of the information related to the orbital station, but there were areas to which he did not have access. And that was where the little lurmen came into action.
Using Icarus's directions, Wag Too made his way through the narrow passages until he reached an area that was somewhat strange to him. A strange vertical cylindrical space that ran through the station from the bottom to the top. One, with huge fans that rotated at a frightening speed and whose gusts of wind could cause small tornadoes inside.
Wag Too: - In position. -
Icarus: - Understood. Do you see the airlock three meters above your position? -
Wag Too: - You mean the one that the huge deadly murderous fan is after? -
icaro: - Affirmative. -
Wag Too: - Yes... I see her. How do you think it can get there? I mean... Without turning into minced meat. -
Icarus: - I'll stop the fans for five seconds. No more, or a system failure warning will be reported. Do you think you can do it? -
Wag Too: - Is there any other way? -
Icarus: - No. -
Wag Too: - I love your optimism. Very good. Whenever you want. -
Icarus: - Deviating power. Restarting system between three... dos... one. -
After the droid's words, Wag Too could hear how the fan motors began to gradually lose power. Without waiting for them to stop completely, the lurmen jumped, hooking itself to the main pillar located in the center of the chamber, which kept everything aligned and served as a central conduit.
Icarus: - Five. -
Wag Too fell hard against the metal, and his agile hands soon found support on the different mechanisms and protective plates, using his strong fingers to secure his position.
Icarus: -Four. -
The lurmen propelled itself with all its strength, even though the fans had not stopped completely, but thanks to the reduction in its speed it was able to catch one of the blades without losing its hand in the process, although it was somewhat painful.
Icarus: - Three. -
The smooth blades of the fan were quite difficult to grip, and if it had not been for the special gloves he was wearing, the Lurmen's hand would have slipped over the small ice crystals that the space cold generated on the metal fans.
Icarus: - Dos. -
Wag Too propelled himself up, and with great speed ran over the fan blades until he reached the center, fast enough to jump to another blade and run towards the airlock that was a meter high.
Icarus: - One. -
The lurmen jumped, holding on tightly to the ledges of the airlock. just in time before the fan blades began to break once again, having to hold its tail with my hand at the last moment. but he was still not safe. In a few seconds, the force of the fans would once again generate a torrent of air that could sweep him away with little effort, so he had to open the airlock and enter the duct.
Ícaro: - Don't Too? ¿Don't Too, me recibes? -
The silence was excruciating. Everyone was waiting for some signal, but nothing responded to the signal. A distressing sensation began to invade those who could hear the communications, but thanks to the Force:
Wag Too: - I'm... I'm fine. - He said extremely agitated.
Kurt: - Don't give us those scares. -
Wag Too: - Do you...? I'm the one who's terrified. -
Icarus: - Good to listen to you, friend. -
Wag Too: - Well... Enough sentimentality. Where? -
When the Lurmen regained its breath, it continued moving through the ducts until it reached its destination. Finally. A sealed room whose access was restricted by the highest authorities of the space station. A place full of computers and servers. The digital command center of the Fondor shipyards.
Don't be fooled by the fact that Wag Too was able to get in without attracting anyone's attention. The conduits were full of sensors to detect small droids that wanted to infiltrate, and the security systems would have fried any life form with a deadly electrical discharge. But the concentrations of metals in the Lurmen's body and suit were so low that he went unnoticed, and the only thing he carried was a small device in one of the pockets that was made mostly of insulating materials. Specifically created by Fixes for this occasion.
Similar to a USB flash drive, Wag Too walked up to one of the terminals and inserted the device. A kind of cylindrical rod that made a couple of turns in the inlet port until it was perfectly attached.
Wag Too: - Very good. It is done. -
Icarus: - Noticed. Rest for now. I'll take care of the rest. -
Wag Too: - Don't delay. The heat here is unbearable. -
The device in question was nothing more than a matrix key, one that Icarus would use as support to manually access imperial records. As if it were a bridge between his physical body connected to the local network, and the imperial database server. When Icarus's programming was reconnected, he was in an infinite three-dimensional digital space very similar to the thumbnail. The vast imperial archives.
What Icarus himself did not know... was that his infiltration did not go as unnoticed as he thought.
