Chap. 75 - Securing the Future
The news shook the entire shelter in the morning. The death of Commander Boil was a hard blow for every resident of the Oasis, but no one suffered his loss as much as those who, more than seeing him as their hero, saw him as their friend... brother... family.
The clone's funeral was something that all the residents of the Oasis attended, this being one of the few clones who was able to find eternal peace in a modest grave near a small forest in the area. One reserved for those who left the earthly plane.
The days passed, but his loss was still felt, especially in those who, although they were able to say goodbye to him in life, were not able to fully assimilate reality.
Numa spent a few days locked in her room, but after remembering the conversation she had with Icarus she managed to overcome her pain and return to her duties as a trainer. Now, he didn't take his arm out of Boil's armor and he swore he would wear it at all times. Like an amulet, and a memory of his memory.
Mirana, on the other hand... didn't do so well. The human spent entire days depressed and away from everyone. He even left the shelter and did not return for several nights. Everyone wanted to help her, but you can't help anyone who can't even help themselves. The loss of Boil for her was much more painful than many imagined, because... very little did she really know, how much the former trade hunter loved him.
Even so, one that, to the surprise of many, suffered its loss was the Delta commando unit. The droid, although he sacrificed his core to try to save his superior, once in the Oasis Wag Too implanted a new one. After all, as a droid that he was, as long as his memory bank was not affected, he would continue to retain the memories and personality he previously had.
Still, life had to go on, and the war in the galaxy and the millions of innocents suffering at the hands of the empire would not wait for their mourning. Icarus was as always in his office, when Miraj asked him to appear at the town hall for something of vital importance. The droid wasted no time and went as fast as it could, but was shocked to see what was happening.
Icarus: - Senator Organa? -
Bly: - Ah... They're here. We can start now. -
Miraj: - Senator, meet General Icarus. Our greatest officer and commander in chief of the Oasis forces. -
Oragana: - My pleasure, General Icarus. I must admit... seeing it is quite a surprise. I had heard a lot about you, but I never imagined that you were a tactical super droid model. -
Icarus: - It's a pleasure to meet you. Arbor. I know of his efforts to alleviate the situation of the Empire despite being surrounded in a sea of enemies. You have my most eternal gratitude.
Organa: - I'm just trying to help as much as I can. This Empire is not even a shadow of the prosperous Republic that I and other senators and friends are trying to build. -
??????: - Well... Let's leave the formalities for another time. We have important matters to discuss. -
Suddenly, all eyes turned to the impatient voice. It was a calamari, which, like Senator Organa, occupied a seat at the circular table in the form of a holoprojection.
Organa: - Commander Ackbar, as hasty as ever. -
Ackbar: - I don't know how you can be so calm, Senator Organa. Just a few years ago we were fighting against them, and now he sees them as allies. Has no sense. It could very well be a trap. -
Icarus: - I understand your concern, commander. Just as I understand that a droid's word to you will have no validity, but the tables of the galaxy have turned. -
Organa: - The general is right. We now face a common enemy, and any help is welcome. -
Ackbar: - Still... don't expect me to trust so easily. -
Icarus: - I understand. We will earn their trust, as well as that of anyone else who is willing to fight the Empire. -
Organa: - For my part it will not be necessary. If you are willing to rescue civilians and shelter them in the Oasis, you have my full confidence. Nothing saddens me more than seeing the innocent involved in these absurd wars. -
Ackbar: - Well... Changing the subject. The reason why we have mainly met. -
Organa: - True. General Icarus. Information has reached us that Imperial engineers are developing a new type of Imperial destroyer. -
icarus: - A new type of Imperial destroyer? That's not good. What do we know about it? -
Organa: - We don't know anything. Our spies couldn't figure out what it was, so all we have is a name. ¨Interdictor-class Star Destroyer.¨ -
Icarus: - It doesn't occur to me that a new type of weapon is being manufactured, but it shouldn't be anything new. -
Ackbar: - This information comes from our spies in the Fondor shipyards. If we want to stop them we must attack right now. My fleet is ready to launch an assault, and I hope to rely on the droid forces of the Oasis. -
Icarus: - Negative. - His response was concise and immediate, taking everyone present by surprise, although there was one who in a certain way expected it.
Ackbar: - I'm not surprised. I knew we couldn't count on you after all. -
Icarus: - Don't get me wrong, commander. I refuse to attack the shipyard, not give them the droid forces. -
Ackbar: - Oh... So you're suggesting that our way of proceeding is wrong? -
Icarus: - Correct. -
Ackbar: - How dare you!? - He said indignantly. - First he refuses to cooperate and then he questions us... -
Organa: - Commander Ackbar... I think you should let General Icarus give his reasons for refusing. -
Icarus: - Thank you, senator. Like I said before, you're misunderstanding me. I don't question their plans, but I think it's best if the Mon Calamari don't come to light for the time being. -
Ackbar: - Not coming to light? What are you talking about? -
Icarus: - We must be realistic. Right at this moment, neither the Oasis, nor the Mon Calamari, nor any rebel cell in the galaxy has enough strength to confront the Empire. Not even all of us together could. We need strength, and for that we need time. -
His words were true, no one wanted to see him that way, but he was right. Confronting the Empire openly would not be a good idea. They could very well destroy Fondor's shipyards and prevent the construction of new weapons, but... And then what? The Empire would send a fleet of Star Destroyers and wipe them off the map, even so...
Icarus: - But... - His slight pause caught everyone's attention. - We can send an elite force to find out what they are up to, and sabotage them if necessary. -
Organa: - That seems like a better idea to me. This way we would avoid being exposed. -
Icarus: - We have the necessary means to carry out this raid. We will take care of it. -
Ackbar: - And what are we supposed to do? Should we sit and wait? We have MC40a cruisers and MC30c frigates ready for combat. -
Icarus: - It won't be necessary. For you, I have a much more important job. -
Ackbar's disapproving face while Icarus pressed some buttons on the holoprojection table was indescribable, but when the projection of the plans for a new ship were shown on the table the Mon Calamari's face changed drastically to total interest.
Ackbar: - Is that...? -
Icarus: - Commander Ackbar, this is probably the most important thing we discuss in this meeting. The Mon Calamari are vital if we are to one day defeat the Empire... But that day will not be today. We need you and your men to stay in the shadows and develop these plans in secret. The Oasis is a planet rich in mineral resources, and will send you everything you need. -
Ackbar: - How could you... develop something like that? That's our technology. -
Icarus: - It wasn't very difficult to figure it out. -
Ackbar: - Wasn't it so difficult...? -
The calamari's face had no comparison. He was stunned, amazed by the droid's incredible ability to decipher. It was unlikely that Icarus had seen the plans of the Mon Calamari ships, as that was something they guarded with great care. And now, in front of him, the droid was giving him a new model based on its own technology. Bigger and more powerful. If these plans were to be developed one day, it would surely be a marvel of engineering and spacecraft manufacturing. The helplessness and emotion was so great that Ackbar could do nothing but laugh.
Ackbar: - Very good... general. He has convinced me. The Calamari engineers will get to work immediately. Still... There is something that intrigues me. -
Icarus: - What is it about? -
Ackbar: - You mentioned that it is not yet time to face the Empire... And no matter how much I grit my teeth, I have to admit that you are right, even so... When do you think that time will come? -
The question took everyone present by surprise, and rightly so. Everyone turned their gaze to the droid, which looked up into nothingness, computing a possible answer... Then... it spoke.
Icarus: - In fourteen years. -
Ackbar: - Fourteen years... In other words, in 3656 DTC. It's quite a while... I hope I'm not too old by then... Very good general... I think... I think I'll take your word for it. -
Organa: - I agree. We need more time to prepare. -
Ackbar: - Very good. It's decided. The Mon Calamari will remain silent until then. I hope to see you again, general. -
Icarus: - I say the same, General Ackbar. -
After saying this, the Mon Calamari disconnected and its projection concluded, leaving the Oasis members alone with the senator.
Organa: - General, I will not ask or question what plans you have to infiltrate the Fondor shipyards, but you will undoubtedly need help. When you arrive, look for my contact. She is a young human girl. Her name is Holdo and she is somewhat... extravagant... But without a doubt it will be useful to you. He has been working in those facilities for years. -
Icarus: - Thank you very much, senator. We will contact her as soon as possible. -
Organa: - I'm glad to hear it. That's all for now, general. It has been an honor. May the force be with you. -
Icarus: - May the force be with you. -
And after saying this, the senator also disconnected.
Miraj: - The Fondor shipyards... It will be an interesting raid without a doubt. -
Bly: - How do you plan to infiltrate us? Surely the surveillance in that place is extreme. -
Icarus: - Just as we have done before, commander. -
Given his statement, everyone was intrigued by his words, so rather than asking for answers, they decided to follow them to the hangars, where he had sent an order digitally to some of his troops. When they arrived, everyone was shocked to see a group of almost forty Stroomtropers.
Alpha: - General. We are ready. - The droid's voice was heard under the white helmet.
