Chap. 29 - The Oasis
Icarus: - A clone!? - He exclaimed, surprised.
The droid knew that five years was long enough for a lot to happen, but he would never expect something like this. But the clone couldn't get a word out before Alpha raised his E-5 rifle and aimed it at the head of his once sworn enemy.
Clone: - Hey, hey, hey! Don't worry. I'm not your enemy... Well... Not anymore. -
Mirana: - Wait! Do not shoot! Thanks to him, we are all alive here. - The two cried out in fear, while the young Stela was shocked.
Alpha did not hesitate, and kept his rifle constantly pointed at the clone's face, and it wasn't until Icarus raised his hand and rested it on the droid's weapon that the droid resolved to ward off the threat of his once nemesis.
Icarus: - It seems that they have a lot to explain. - He said with some mistrust.
Clone: - My name is Boil. And yes, once we were enemies on the same battlefield. But those days are long in the past. And why are they here? - he asked the woman.
Mirana: - Your friend breathed the polluted air. They're doing a trachea transplant. -
Boil: - It's a shame to hear it. But do not worry. Most of us have suffered the same. Me included. Synthetic tracheas are as effective as natural ones and do not harm the well-being of the patient. -
Icarus: - How long have they been here? -
Boil: - We better go to my office to talk calmly. -
Icarus knew that he was right, but he looked once more at the darkened window of the operating room with some concern.
Stela: - Don't worry. Your friend is in good hands. I'll take care of informing you when I wake up. - Said the young Afro-descendant with a smile on her face.
Icarus: - Very good. We follow them. -
Boil: - Very well... Wait. - He puts his hand to his ear. - They informed us that their companions arrived at the doors of the shelter. It is currently in the decontamination process. -
Icarus: - Understood. Alpha unit. Go to the shelter entrance and meet up with the rest. wait for me there -
Alpha: - Understood. Any sign of the ship? -
Icarus: - Negative. I'll let you know when I get something so they can go look for it. Bring a small mask for Tova. -
Alfa: - Roger. Roger. -
And the commando unit retreated to the door while Icarus followed the clone and the masked woman into the shelter.
Boil: - Two years have passed since we settled here. But we have managed to establish a small community. It's not much, but it's all we have. -
When he finished speaking, the clone moved out of his way showing an incredible view of the interior of the cavern.
Icarus couldn't believe what his optical sensors were seeing. Passing through an illuminated lock, a huge underground city was revealed before him. The height of the chamber was more than fifty meters, high enough for some buildings to stand out among the structures that were scattered throughout the place. Just by looking, the droid was able to identify over a hundred different structures of all kinds, including pipes leading up to the surface. If I had to guess, those pipes came from some factory in this place. Without a doubt, a good sign for his plans.
Boil: - Impressive. Don't you believe it? -
Icarus: - Yes, it is. But it seems impossible to me that all this has been manufactured in just two years. -
Boil: - That merit corresponds to the inhabitants of Gwori and their regent. Who started building this city after the Republic attack. -
The droid followed the other two through the main streets of the underground city. Icarus looked at everything and everyone, hundreds of faces that somehow rejoiced at his presence. The citizens were of all sorts of species from different places in the Galaxy. Humans, Twi'leks, Zabraks, Bith, Neimodians, Quarrens, Sullutans, Weequays, Trandoshans, Zyngerrians, among others who once belonged to a planet of the Separatist Alliance. They all flocked to the streets to watch the towering super tactical droid pass them by.
In the distance and through the crowd, several dozen B1 droids could be seen. They did not carry weapons, as they were surely used for housework or maintenance. But his mere presence was a very encouraging sign.
Mirana: - You are very popular. - She said, interrupting him from his thoughts.
Icarus: - The introduction of the Model 1 Super Tactical Droid to the battlefields was a great achievement for the Separatists. The accumulated victories were praised from all the worlds of the Alliance. And if it weren't for the "latest events," I'd estimate the victory was leaning 74.8% in our favor. -
Mirana: - No wonder they praise you so much. -
The woman responded with a small smile hidden under her helmet, but immediately glanced surreptitiously at the clone that was walking beside her, knowing that these "latest events" were something that still haunted him.
Icarus: - Is something wrong, clone? - Asked something rigid, seeing that he had his gaze fixed on the floor.
Boil: - No. It's nothing. - He said trying to drive away the bad thoughts. - And I'd appreciate it if you didn't call me a clone. My name is Boil. -
Icarus: - We'll see about that. - He said defiantly, after all, Icarus was still programmed to face the clones in any battlefield.
Mirana: - Good. We have arrived. - He said trying to alleviate the situation.
Ahead of them loomed a small white building, isolated from the rest by a circular walk and a small ring of bushes. Very beautiful without a doubt, with its slightly concave egg-shaped surfaces. It was the city hall.
Boil: - We should go see the mayoress. -
Icarus: - Mayor? - He asked, confused. - I thought you said you were the commander of this place. -
Boil: - I am. But we cannot live under a military regime for that long. The mayoress is the one who really rules the Oasis, our little underground refuge. -
The three individuals went up the stairs of the building until they reached a small hall, which coincided with a huge white metal door and several corridors that led to other rooms and offices in the place. They approached the huge door and Mirana pressed buttons on the terminal. The door opened and the three of them entered the room that obviously looked like the regent's office, but on the swivel chair that was on the other side of the bureau, right in the center of the room, Icarus stared in amazement at the image of a ghost.
Icarus: - Miraj Scintel! Impossible! - He said in shock
Miraj: - Go. Looks like we don't need introductions anymore. - Said the zyngerrian, somewhat playful.
Icarus: - Impossible. you were dead Records state that Count Dooku himself took it upon himself to end your life. How is this possible? -
Miraj: - Darling, I'm a zyngerrian. I have many tricks up my sleeve. - However, the droid did not understand that comment in the slightest. - Have you heard of thirkle flower[invention]? The droid shook his head.
Mirana: - The extract from its petals creates an infusion that can lower the biorhythm to levels similar to death. -
Icarus: - But. Your neck... How? -
Miraj: - Do you think all these rings are just decoration? - He asked while pointing to the more than fifteen gold rings that covered his long neck from the base of his skull to his shoulders.
Icarus: - And Kadavo? - He asked one last question. - The ship in which the Jedi took you out of Zygerria was destroyed as soon as it landed on the planet. -
Miraj: - I never went to Kadavo. When I woke up, I was still in Zygerria. In the great fields of my beautiful planet, lying on a huge rock shaped like a pedestal, surrounded by the beautiful white flowers of the southern plains. - He said with a melancholic voice, as if he was remembering an old youthful love.
[If you don't understand any of this you should watch Star Wars season 4 episodes 10-12 the Clone Wars; Or just search the internet. And that's how they discover who this character is if they had never seen him in canon]
The droid was shocked for a few seconds. Thinking of all the emotions he had experienced in a single day had him in a daze. But this was not the time to waver. Before him was someone who had been "killed" by Count Dooku himself, the leader of the Separatist Alliance, which made her someone very dangerous for his plans and for the Alliance itself if they wanted to claim their revenge. In his eyes, the Zingerrian was his most potential enemy.
Icarus: - Someone who was able to outwit Count Dooku himself... It's a bad joke... Very good... You have my full attention. -
He told her in a calm voice, while placing his hands behind their backs, showing a clear air of superiority. Something that, perhaps, he was inadvertently copying from his encounter with Kalani.
