Chap. 17 - More than Two
Long minutes passed without either of them saying a word. They remained seated on the uncomfortable metal container while the little girl calmed down. The girl had a strong character, perhaps forged by all the time she lived alone in those icy conditions. What made the droid wonder how she accomplished such a feat. She wanted to ask him, but she knew this was not the time.
A sharp beep interrupted the silence, taking them both by surprise. The oven had finished cooking whatever Icarus had done. The mere memory of those whitish amorphous masses was enough to make the little girl's stomach knot, however, a succulent smell made her nose unable to stop sniffing curiously.
Icarus stood up and proceeded to check what he had made, but when he opened the oven he was greatly disappointed.
"¿That What the hell was that?" They both asked themselves, seeing what was lying on the tray that Icarus was taking out of the oven. The strange amorphous mass had expanded and turned a yellowish color. Its twisted silhouette was reminiscent of the disgusting worms he had seen on the earth of Mygeeto, but apparently his smell caught the little girl's attention.
Icarus was so focused trying to analyze what had gone wrong, that he didn't notice that the girl approached carefully, and tried to grab one of the strange "creations" of the droid.
Icarus: - Be carefu! - He tried warn the girl, but too late.
The little girl grabbed the metal tray with her hand without knowing how hot it was. A loud squeal of pain came from the little girl's mouth, as she backed away, staring tearfully at her burned hand. Still, it was strong enough to hold back the pain and not cry.
Icarus checked the burn immediately, but fortunately, it hadn't been anything serious. The droid hurried to the medical booth that adjoined the kitchen, looking for something to help treat the girl. His steps were heavy, and the blows he made opening and closing the metal drawers echoed through the ship. Finally, he found what he was looking for.
He returned to where the little girl was and applied a spray to the affected hand. The burn was not very serious, and in just a few seconds the pain and the marks on the pads of the little girl disappeared.
Girl: - Thank you. -
The little girl said in a sweet voice, which made the droid feel a strange warm sensation in its metallic core. But before he could wonder what was happening to him, the voice of a half-asleep Wag Too was present in the place.
Wag Too: - Why so much... (yawning)... fuss? - It seems that the noise that Icarus made did not go unnoticed.
Icarus: - An accident without major complications. -
Wag Too: - Good to know. - He yawned again. - What is that smeeeeeeeeell? -
The lurmen reacted suddenly. For no apparent reason, seeing the girl, he turned around. Neither of the other two knew why, but Wag Too seemed to be very uncomfortable.
Wag Too: - Wh...wh...why...why is she like this? -
Icarus: - What do you mean? -
Wag Too: - Why doesn't she have clothes? Where is her coat? -
The droid looked at the little girl, and they both exchanged glances, but with more doubts than answers.
Icarus: - Her coat was for the extreme climate of Nelvaana. The temperature inside the ship is much higher, so it is logical that she would have decided to take off her coat to cool down. -
Wag Too: - That's not the point! -
The lurmen hurried away, leaving the droid and girl pair in much confusion. The little girl didn't understand a word he was saying, but it was strange to her that the droid didn't either. for a few seconds the lurmen returned, and threw a cloth that fell on the face of the droid, to then go back to the ship's hold.
The droid removed the piece of cloth from his face, and realized that it was a pullover. It was something much lighter than the heavy coat she was wearing, but she still had a hard time making the girl understand that she should put it on.
Wag Too: - Are you done? - He shouted from the cellar.
Icarus: - Yes... Well. I think so. -
Wag Too: - How that "you think so"? -
The lurmen returned to the kitchen and could not help smiling seeing the little girl wearing one of her white pullovers. It was huge, hanging down to her knees. The sleeves were loose and the neckline hung below her right shoulder. But what was most funny to him was the little girl's angry face.
Wag Too: - Well. It could be worse. -
Girl: - Ko mul ka de li. -
Wag Too: - What did she say? -
Ícaro: - She said that... she's not very comfortable. - Avoiding the fact that the little girl had actually cursed him in her native folklore.
Wag Too: - He'll get used to it. And what is that? It smells pretty good. - He said pointing to the strange masses that Icarus had prepared.
Icarus: - I tried to prepare something. But nothing like the pictures in the recipe came out. -
The lurmen approached the tray, but seeing that it was still hot, he took some napkins, wrapped two pieces and managed to hold them with his hands without burning himself, then he offered one to the little girl. The two organics sniffed at the appetizer for a moment, then took a bite. The lurmen nodded, it didn't look good, but it tasted very good. The girl, on the other hand, began to devour it with such impetus that it did not seem that she had eaten a whole portion.
Wag Too: - This is very good. I had never tried anything like this. What is it? -
Ícaro: - It is known as a croissant or puff pastry. Or that's what I tried. I am not programmed to do such things. -
Wag Too: - And... What will we do with...? - He told him, pointing secretly towards the girl.
Icarus: - Eat everything if you want - He told the little girl before going with Wag Too to the cargo hold.
Wag Too: - What happened? -
Icarus: - The girl lost her entire family. Apparently, she has been living alone for a long time. -
Wag Too: - Wait. Alone? How could she survive all this time living alone in such an extreme climate? -
Icarus: - I don't know. But the biggest problem is that I can't figure out what to do with it. -
Wag Too: - Good. Leaving her in Nelvaana alone I think would be too cruel. And if we take her with us? -
Ícaro: - That idea seems just as insecure to me. We do not know that we will have problems in the future. -
Wag Too: - Do you have a better idea? -
Icarus: - No. - He said after thinking about it for a few seconds.
Wag Too: - Well. I guess we have no other choice. At least until we find a place to put it. -
Icarus: - Very well. We will proceed with your plan. -
Wag Too: - Changing the subject. The droids are ready to be reprogrammed. Do you want to take a look? -
Icarus followed the lurmen to a corner of the warehouse, where the four B1 droids and one B2 droid waited to be reprogrammed. Icarus came over and reviewed them in detail.
Icarus: - Three B1 units and one OOM. -
Wag Too: - What does that mean? -
Icarus: - Only one of them will be independent. The other three along with B2 will have to be operated directly by me. I will assume the role of central computer. -
Wag Too: - I don't really understand what that means but... Can you do it? -
Icarus: - No problem. By my calculations I can command the five million B1 droids with no problem. -
The Lurmen was stumped trying to imagine in his head what an army of five million droids would look like while Icarus started with the programming. He used his modified hand to attach itself to the droids' computer located in the rear, and within seconds he had rewritten its programming. In less than two minutes, the five droids were ready to operate.
Icarus: - They are ready. You can turn them on. -
Wag Too: - Very good. Here we go. -
The lurmen connected some cables to the droids' computers, approached a panel and after pressing several buttons, the slight sound of the motors inside the droids could be heard turning on while B2's characteristic red light on his chest turned on. .
Icarus: - Units B1, OOM and B2, one step forward. - And the droids obeyed.
OOM: - Which are your orders, Commander? -
Wag Too: - Yes! They work. - He said with joy, still doubting his work.
Icarus: - Very good. Let's check its performance. -
It took Icarus about ten minutes to check that all the droids could move all their joints on their own in an exercise routine that appeared to be a yoga class. Although they did not carry blasters, the battle droids operated as usual. Even the B2 with its twin cannons mounted on its forearm. Although it was not loaded.
Icarus: - Very good. Line up. And now follow me. -
The droids obeyed and followed Icarus through the corridors of the ship until they reached the kitchen, where the little girl was waiting patiently with puff pastry crumbs still on her face, but when she saw the battle droids, she hid in fear behind the containers. of rations.
Ícaro: - Wat happed? -
Girl: - They. They were the ones who took my dad. -
Icarus: - I understand. But, you will be fine. They are under my command. They do not harm you. -
Girl: - Do you promise? - Icarus found the girl's doubt "funny", but he supposed that he still had a lot to learn from organics.
Icarus: - I promise. - He said as he stretched out his hand.
The girl hesitated a bit, but ended up accepting the droid's hand as she slowly made her way out after the containers. The little girl was still scared, but she was acting very brave as Icarus brushed the puff pastry crumbs from her face. From a distance, Wag Too watched gracefully, remembering the times his mother and father had done something similar to him.
OOM: - Excuse me sir. Who is the girl? - Said the OOM droid, which had a certain level of autonomy.
Icarus: - I have't askd yo yet, but... What's you name? -
Niña: - Tova. Tova-Adaz. - Icarus nodded.
Icarus: - She is Tova-Adaz. And he is Wag Too. - He said while pointing to the lurmen. - And both will be his superiors.
The OOM droid and the B2 droid looked at each other doubtfully. But they simply accepted their commander's order. Immediately afterwards, all those present went to the control cabin of the Kestrel Nova.
Wag Too: - So Tova-Adaz. Curious name. -
Icarus: - It means "good" and "beautiful" is her native language. -
Wag Too: - ¿Oh yeah? So it's a very good name. -
The girl and the lurmen exchanged glances, and without reason apparent they shared a smile despite not understanding a word the other was saying.
Icarus: - Units 1, 2 and 3. To the controls. OOM unit set course for the planet Agamar. Unit B2, return to the cargo hold and suspend operations until contacted.
Droids: - Roger. Roger. -
The droids turned and continued to carry out their respective tasks.
Wag Too: - Agamar? Isn't that a desert planet just outside the outer rim? What will we do there? -
Icarus: - After order 66 was executed. All Separatist Alliance droids were ordered to stop their duties. However, there is a very strange record coming from that planet. Apparently, a coded message was sent back with the command: "Order denied."
