Chap. 12 - In the Dark
Once the doors of the secret laboratory were fully opened, Icarus signaled to the ship for Wag Too to shut it down. The Kestrel Nova's engines ceased to rumble across the wasteland, and utter silence he took over from the area. Only the wind echoing inside the endless dark corridor resounded in a chilling tone.
The lurmen hurried to abandon the ship and catch up with Icarus, who was standing, looking into the dark corridor, but with his processor analyzing data from his memory. (With mind elsewhere)
Wag Too: - Any problem? - He said after waiting a minute and seeing that the droid didn't react.
Ícaro: - I was checking my memory bank, and I found an improvised map of this place. However, it is not very accurate and there are many areas that do not appear on the plan. -
Wag Too: - So... Are we blind? -
Ícaro: - If we can turn the generator back on, there won't be any problems with the lights. -
Wag Too: - No. I meant... Forget it. - He said dramatically.
The pair entered the interior of the laboratory using flashlights to see through where they were going. Although the place was spacious, big enough for a little ship to enter, there were many teams and junk useless scattered around the place.
It didn't take long for them to walk through the huge main corridor, which also doubled as a storeroom. Although all the shelves were empty, they had indentations indicating that the activity in that place was quite heavy. Finally, they reached an even higher room, with enough space to accommodate several AT walkers. There were conduits running from one place to another on the walls, and right in the middle was a metal structure that looked like some kind of generator.
Wag Too: - This must be it. - He said as he opened a lid to access the interior.
The lurmen manipulated several mechanisms but nothing occurred. He even used various tools that he carried from the ship, but still the machinery seemed to not turn back on.
Wag Too: - Nothing. It's fried. - He said as he left the interior of the structure that contained the generator.
Icarus: - Do you know the reason? -
Wag Too: - The power cells are in good condition. And in a general sense, the machinery does not suffer damage beyond the wear and tear of time and lack of maintenance. But it seems that the problem is elsewhere. Besides Look at him He's too small to feed this whole place. - The droid tried to analyze a little more the map he had in his files.
Icarus: - Apparently there is a second lower level. But I only have the location of the elevators. -
Wag Too: - We must go to investigate. -
The elevators weren't very far, but there was a problem. Having no energy, they were of no use. They tried to locate stairs around, but couldn't find any. Something strange, but no one gave it too much importance. And with no other means to continue on his way, Icarus had to use his lightsaber to blast a gaping hole in the elevator doors.
The heavy metal plates of the doors fell away, revealing the inside of the elevator, but if they wanted to go down, they had to cut through the floor as well. Icarus had no knowledge of how to wield a lightsaber, but his robotic features allowed him to make two perfect holes big enough for both of them to fit through without needing to shrink too much. Although he took at least five minutes to complete the task.
As the droid sliced through the metal piece on the elevator floor, there was a high-pitched screech as the metal scraped, and finally, the plate slid off until it began to fall to the floor empty. The lurmen peered into the hole curiously, until the mighty crash caused by the huge piece of metal hitting the ground made it recoil in fright.
Wag Too poked his head into the hole once more, but saw nothing encouraging. The elevator was magnetic, and the walls of the elevator shaft were straight and smooth, so there was no conduit or cable through which you could descend.
Icarus: - This will be a problem. -
Wag Too: - I'll look for a rope or cable in the ship. -
Ícaro: - Are you thinking of going down alone? -
Wag Too: - Do you have a better idea? - The droid had no answer to that question, which caused the lurmen a subtle mockery.
Wag Too returned to the ship shortly. Outside the shelter, the cold and the wind blew strongly, causing the little being to wave hard. Without wasting a second, he headed for the cargo hold and there took a long rope that he could barely carry with his hands. He had to wrap it around his body, to be able to carry it into the laboratory. Every step you should be cursed at itself for not asking Icarus to do it instead of him.
With his clumsy walk he managed to get out of the ship and close the hatches, but before he reached the entrance to the laboratory something caught his attention. He turned around quickly, but there was nothing nearby. The force breeze created a dense layer of fast-moving snow that prevented him from seeing more than twenty meters away, and a constant ringing cluttered his ears. his nose was numb, so I couldn't smell anything. However, I had this strange feeling, as if some predator was on the lookout stalking.
The lurmen remained static for a few seconds. He had his hand ready to grab his rifle and shoot any silhouette that appeared in front of him. I was tense, like a few times used to be. But several long seconds passed and nothing happened. "It must be my nerves." He thought to himself. Believing that the extreme weather was playing him in his against. So he settled the huge rope on his body and returned to the interior of the laboratory aided by his flashlight. What the lurmen didn't know was that a pair of huge black eyes were watching them from a distance, far away over the rich snow.
After much effort and setbacks, Wag Too was able to reach where Ícaro was, who was checking the state of the circuits in the facilities. The lurmen was exhausted, and he didn't hesitate to drop the rope as he collapsed onto the ground belly up.
Icarus: - Are you sure you still want to do this? - He asked doubtfully.
Wag Too: - Yes. - He answered barely, lengthening the i as a sign of exhaustion.
It took Wag Too at least ten minutes to recover while Icarus continued to check the state of the machinery. There were many doors to other rooms, but to gain access he had to wait to restore the power source. The droid carried the heavy rope casually, making Wag Too wince involuntarily. His metal hands made a powerful grip on the fibers of the rope, and he dropped the other end into the elevator shaft. You could even hear the blow produced by the free end hitting the metal floor.
The lurmen carried everything he thought necessary, but to do so, he had to leave his rifle behind, carrying various tools and spare parts he considered necessary. But before starting to descend, the droid stopped him by grabbing his arm.
Icarus: - Wag Too... - He said while they both exchanged glances. - Be careful down there. -
The lurmen didn't answer anything, he simply nodded his head in confidence, but the little being couldn't hide his emotions from a special droid like Icarus. The truth was, Wag Too was scared to death, although he managed to hide it pretty well.
Ever since he entered the cave, he felt extremely nervous, and he pointed his flashlight at every corner just to check that there was nothing hidden. Checking the same site even two or three times. The lurmen felt safe underground, and Icarus was able to sense it. Hence his doubt about letting him go down alone, in an even deeper place and without company. But seeing that it was the lurmen's own idea and that his eyes were determined, he had no way of telling him to reconsider.
Wag Too made his way down the rope with ease, even carrying the extra fifty pounds of his tools. Icarus held the rope tightly, gripping his fingers metallic to the fibers of the material, without leaving it. Give way not even an inch. The lurmen finally reached the bottom of the hole, where it encountered another crossroads.
Wag Too: - Icarus, we have a problem. - His voice toward echo in the place
Icarus: - What happens? -
Wag Too: - The door on this level was also locked. -
Icarus: - Here. -
The lurmen looked up as he raised the lantern, and saw a strange metal descending from above. When he was close enough, he quickly caught it, only to realize it was the droid's lightsaber.
Icarus: - Use it to pierce the metal. -
Several seconds passed, but the droid couldn't hear the peculiar sound the lightsaber made as it sliced through the thick pieces of metal.
Wag Too: - How do you turn on? - He asked, embarrassed.
Icarus: - Do you see the red button? -
Wag Too: - Sir. -
Icarus: -Turn it to the right and press it. - At that moment the droid was rethinking if throwing the saber at him was a good idea.
After hearing some strange sounds produced by the mishandling of the lurmen of the saber, the characteristic sound of a lightsaber igniting could finally be heard, while a blue light emanated from the bottom of the hole.
Wag Too: -Whoa! This is incredible! - He exclaimed excitedly.
Icarus: - It's not a toy. - He tried to rebuke him.
The lurmen pointed the point of his saber at the metal doors and tried to break through, but it wasn't as easy as he thought. The droid was clearly stronger than he was, which was why he was able to pierce metal with no problem, but he would never think it would be so hard.
The lurmen's first thrust pierced barely an inch through the hard metal, and it took much more effort to let the blade pass through the thick metal doors. Only when his own strength pushed him forward did he know he had made it to the other end. But drilling is one thing and cutting is another. Wag Too had to use all his strength to make the metal give way to the lightsaber. Most of the time the metal gave way because the heat was so high that it began to melt rather than cut cleanly. It was safe to assume that the hole the lurmen made was completely misshapen, with multiple marks of molten metal and pieces falling out in separate parts. After such a task, Wag Too was completely exhausted.
When he got out of the elevator bed, Wag Too found himself in a long corridor that stretched in both directions. Even being underground, the lurmen's hunting skills helped him, managing to orient himself directly to the generator room, which was just below from machinery that he himself had checked. He walked for a while until he reached a section where the corridor divided into two opposite directions. There were signs indicating where to go, but the lurmen did not know the language, so he had to follow his hunting instincts. And finally, he managed to reach a room that seemed to be the one. I was right. The only problem was another locked metal door.
Although tired, the lurmen had to go back to make another hole that took at least five minutes. This door was less thick, and did not have as many problems as the previous one. Still, it was a difficult task.
Icarus remained on top of the elevator, holding the rope tightly without wavering in his grip. Despite being a droid, he was extremely concerned about the situation in the lurmen. It had been over twenty minutes since Wag Too had entered the lower level and she hadn't heard from him. They had no way to talk, and all he could do was trust his partner. And just before he began to consider diving into the hole to check the safety of the lurmen, the lights in the facility came on at the same time as the heating, which was clearly visible as hot air rushed out of the locks.
