Chap. 106 - Hero
Meanwhile, inside an Imperial destroyer, a young admiral watched in awe at the marvel that Imperial technology was able to produce.
Cress: - Impressive. I would never have imagined that something like this was possible. -
Tarkin: - ¨Gravitational wells.¨ The body of specialists under my command have done a magnificent job, I must say. -
Thrawn: - Good work without a doubt. But I still believe that... A good fighter escort would also be very productive. -
Tarkin: - Your proposal for the new Defender TIE is undoubtedly interesting, but after this victory, there will be no need to prioritize this type of projects. "Intimidation"... will be more than enough. -
Thrawn: - I wouldn't be so sure. -
Officer: - The enemy warship is approaching our position. -
Each imperial officer could see how the battleship piloted by Icarus was launched head-on. Many thought the Separatist remnants had lost their minds, but their guns were focused solely on the battleship Interdictor with impressive accuracy.
Thrawn: - Impressive. He discovered our ace much faster than expected. -
Tarkin: - Is this the famous droid you were looking for so much? -
Thrawn: - Correct. The last of its kind. -
Vader: - Destroy it... Now. -
Cress: - I'll take care of it. -
Suddenly, the imperial battleship under the command of the young admiral stood between Icarus and the strange imperial ship. And imitating a technique that Grand Admiral Thrawn himself admired, he turned the battleship around, forming a huge shield with the bottom of the ship itself. A technique devised by the padawan Ashoka Tano, during the period of the Clone Wars. There was no possible way that Icarus could reach the Interdictor.
Meanwhile inside the rebel battleship.
B1: - The enemy ship has cut the line of sight on the target. We can't reach it. -
Icarus cursed silently. As soon as he noticed this new imperial ship, he changed his defense strategy to a desperate attack. He had the feeling that as long as this new Imperial ship was present, none of the frigates behind it would be able to make the jump to hyperspace.
In his current state, Icarus was unable to define the range or power of said weapon. Maybe it needed a recharge time. There may even be a longer time before the Nebulon and the rest of the ships could make the jump once more, but he had no way of checking it... And he wasn't going to risk finding out.
However, I did not expect such a quick reaction, much less that another destroyer would act as a shield. In front of him stood an impenetrable metal wall that blinded him from his objective, and he knew he must destroy it at any cost. The big question was, would he be able to do anything before his own ship fell before the overwhelming enemy firepower.
B1: - Shields at 15%. It won't last much longer. -
He already knew it. The battleship was part of itself, so droid B1 didn't have to remind it. He felt the powerful shots of the imperial fleet like heartbreaking blows on his own skin.
B1: - The shields have fallen. -
The countdown began for him. There was no longer anything to protect him from the fury of the empire. Those waiting from the cockpits of the Imperial Destroyers watched with particular satisfaction as the explosions began to saturate the hull of the enemy ship.
B1: - Port and starboard turbines disabled... We are defenseless. -
Was this the end? Sacrificed so much for nothing? Icarus's computer was saturated with ideas that led to nothing. Plans that failed again and again inside him. Even if it wanted to ram the shield ship, there was no way it would hit the Interdictor. His calculations made it very clear.
B1: - And that music? -
https://youtu.be/7LBYrDx_784
Suddenly, a peculiar song began to play over the ship's speakers. A song that even those who were inside the frigate Nebulón could hear. The B1 droids keeping the destroyer operational stopped for a second, and turned around when they saw their general, following the rhythm of the melody by tapping his hand against the chair, and quietly singing the lyrics of the song. ...A song composed millennia ago.
Wag Too: - ¡ÍCARO! -
Miraj: - GENERAL! -
Toba: - DAD! -
The voices of his three loved ones echoed through the communication channels, stabbing at his core like poisoned daggers. Figuring out that he wouldn't be able to protect them made him feel helpless, desperate. Then... a light could be seen at the end of the tunnel.
Icarus: - I love you... All of you. -
Imperial Officer: - High energy levels recorded coming from enemy ship! -
Thrawn: - What's going on? -
Imperial Officer: - Levels increasing... Critical mass reached. -
Thrawn: - They're going to make the jump... -
Tarkin: - Admiral Cress! Move immediately! -
But there was no time. The hyperdrives on Icarus' ship were already loaded. This time he would trust his calculations, and the strength that a jump to hyperspace would provide would allow him to break through that metal shield and reach his objective.
Icarus: - Take care of her... For me. - He seemed to have spoken to himself, but:
Ki-Adi-Mundi: - I will... You have impressed me, droid... You have impressed me... -
And so, Icarus' ship took the powerful leap. Even using the Interdictor's vacuum wells, the mass of an Imperial battleship was too great to be stopped so abruptly. As soon as the battleship made the jump to hyperspace, it suddenly exited, crashing into the warship commanded by Admiral Cress. And both masses combined, were catapulted onto the Interdictor Cruiser, which could not stand due to the force with which the debris attacked its fuselage.
Toba: - NOOOOO! -
Don't Too: - ¡ÍCAROOOO! -
Miraj: - MAKE THE JUMP! NOW! -
The frigate's operators wasted no time, immediately jumping into hyperspace, now that the Imperials had no way to stop them. The sacrifice of Icarus... It was not in vain.
Now, the remains of the imperial fleet shook, while the explosions generated by the collision between the three ships shook the entire fleet around them. Furthermore, the damage to the rest of the warships was minimal.
Tarkin: - That was... unexpected. -
Thrawn: - I must admit that it even took me by surprise. -
Tarkin: - A shame for the young admiral... He had a lot of potential. -
Thrawn: - May his sacrifice never be forgotten. -
Tarkin: - Were we able to trace the route of the escaped ships? -
Officer: - Negative... The explosion of the gravity wells decalibrated all our sensors... There is no way to track them. -
Thrawn: - A punishment. -
Tarkin: - It's done then. -
Vader: - No... Find that scum that escaped and eliminate him... No matter what. -
However, that would be something that would not happen for a long time. Now, safe in hyperspace travel, those who managed to escape silently grieved the loss of their general and honored his sacrifice.
Miraj and Wag Too did their best to calm little Toba, who was the one who suffered the most from everything. The war had taken a father from him for the second time. It wasn't fair... It wasn't fair at all.
Now, the only thing he could do was look at the lightsaber that Icarus had given him... He could no longer keep his promise.
They had lost... Not only the battle, but also many things. Your home, your loved ones. But there was still hope.
Helgait: - We must find a place to go... We can't wander through space all the time. -
Wag Too: - I agree... Trying to go to other worlds with rebel sectors would be very dangerous. -
Miraj: - We still have this. -
Everyone watched as the Zygerrian showed the device that Icarus had given her a couple of hours before. With everything that had happened, he did not have time to think about it clearly, but it was most likely that there, the general had given them one last hope.
Mira connected the device to the holotable, and a detailed map of a sector of the galaxy was immediately displayed. One where a planet forgotten by time was highlighted.
Helgait: - An uninhabited planet? -
Wag Too: - I hadn't seen it before... This one didn't appear in the ship's navigation logs. What could it be? -
Miraj: - Our new home... Yavin 4. A New Hope. -

Hello everyone.
First of all, thank you for reading this story and I hope you found it to your liking.
I am aware that this was not the happy ending that many expected, but I can assure you that this conclusion was not made in a rush. In fact, I had this ending in mind since Icarus and Wag Too met in the ruins of Mygeeto. Unfortunately this is Star Wars, and I don't think any war has a happy ending.
Thank you all for reading, and many thanks to those who voted and were part of this peculiar story.
Thanks to all those who did not hesitate to contribute their ideas, and in particular to Shota_Fanfic, for giving us the character of Foxley, whom I really appreciated despite how short he lasted in the story. I just hope that its ending was worthy enough.
For now I say goodbye, but we may meet again in this passage. After all, this is the end of the tactical super droid's adventure... But it's not the end of Star Wars.
