Chapter One: Still a Padawan.
(In a world where Anakin skywalker was Qui-Gon Jinn's Padawan just prior to the Clone wars and Now the newly Knighted Jedi is starting to lead his own legion of CLones into the Clone Wars, His former Master Qui-Gon Jinn is thinking of taking on another Padawan and saw a young student that might just fit what he is looking for. After signing off to have the Padawan sent after the final battle of Naboo, Qui-Gon requested his new Padawan Learner to be sent to him.)
Dawn came to the Jedi temple Obi-Wan Kenobi pushed himself up and out of his bed, he sighed and looked up at the small model starship above his bed, today was the day he shipped off to Naboo to meet up with his Master Qui-Gon Jinn. In some ways he was nervous, but at the same time Jinn had chosen him and he was honored to be his Padawan. The lights in the hallway came on signifying that it was time for morning meditation. There was a soft knock on his door and Obi-Wan rose to his feet. "Padawan Kenobi?" Jedi Master Mace Windu called from the doorway. "Your Master called this morning and he requested you leave as soon as possible."
"Yes Master Windu, I will be ready to go in 1 click." Obi-Wan pulled on a fresh tunic over his head and grabbed his belt and lightsaber, quickly buckling his belt and hooking his lightsaber onto new his belt. "Did Master Jinn mention why I am needed now?"
"I was not told, Master Yoda took the cam this morning, he only told me that your Master asked for you." Master Windu said walking towards the door. "We'd better hurry if we are to catch your cursor." Obi-Wan grabbed a small survival pack by the door and walked out after Jedi Master Mace Windu.
"I understand Master Windu." Obi-Wan said hurrying after the Tall Master's long strides. Although Obi-Wan was one of the taller Jedi Padawans his age, he was still shorter than the Master Windu. Obi-Wan's short black hair and long Jedi Padawan braid, a symbol of his learning achievements on the Jedi path, his tan Jedi robes, his knee high brown leather boots, Obi-Wan was the perfect student. Obi-Wan's skills as a Lightsaber duelist made him a strong fighter. This what stood out to Qui-Gon when he saw Obi-Wan fight. He saw the passion and he also did see some anger, but it was nothing that he could not tame and teach. Qui-Gon always loved a challenge and taking the young Jedi was just the distraction from the war.
"Good luck Padawan" Master Windu said as as the pari reached the landing bay. "You are to board the resolute and join your master in the air raid on Naboo."
"Yes master, I understand" Obi-Wan hurried to the republic shuttle's and prepared to board.
"Are you coming Master Windu?" the Padawan asked looking down the ramp.
"No Padawan, I am to stay here with Master Yoda." Master Windu said smiling back up at the Padawan, "But give your Master my rewards." Obi-Wan nodded and walked further into the ship.
Obi-Wan had never been on a Republic cruiser, the ship was larger than he had expected, but it also had less room. The command room was large and had many holographic displays and battle schematics and plans. Obi-Wan walked onto the bridge. All the troopers looked him up and down and realized the young boy was a Jedi. "Commander On deck!" one of them shouted. All at once the troops stopped what they were doing and stood to salute the young Jedi. "Commander, um..... What's your name?" the clone said removing his helmet.
"I am Jedi Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi." the Padawan said walking over to the clone. "And you are?"
"Caption CC-2224, Sr." the clone said "But everyone calls me Cody Sr." The clone saluted the young Jedi then placed his helmet back on. "We are headed back into a war zone, you sure you ready for this kid?"
"I think I am, but this would be my first time in a war zone." Obi-Wan saw no reason to lie to the clone. "How about you?"
"Well if I am to be honest Sr, This is my first time too." Cody said looking across the tables and holo displays. "Get back to work."
"Well, I'm not sure how things go around here so, I'll just stay in my cabin." The Young Jedi started to head towards the large double doors he had walked through to enter the bridge.
"Commander Kenobi correct?" a voice said behind him. "Admiral Yularen." A tall dark haired man said walking up behind the young Jedi, although Obi-Wan was tall for a 13 year old boy, the Admiral was much taller than him. "It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Master Jinn told us you were coming on the next ship, but it is an Honor to have you aboard."
"I am honored to be here." Obi-Wan said bowing in a traditional Jedi fashion. "I am not sure what my job here is going to be, but I am more than willing to help you out." Yularen smiled at the young boy, happy to see someone who was willing to help out the grand army of the Republic.
"Happy to see your willing to help." Yularen said walking over to one of the planners. "Your Master and his troops have moved into this section of the city while General Skywalker has moved his troops onto this side, they are hoping to catch General Grievous in the middle and take him out. However, during the battle to get to their point General Skywalker lost a large amount of his troops, our job is to take what men we have and move them into the areas that General Skywalker is in to aid him, if we fail, we will fail the mission."
"I see, so it is crucial to get these troops into the right place so they can assist General Skywalker." Obi-Wan said running his hand through his hair. "Let's see...... If we move the fighter Jets into position on the west side of the city we can move the cursor over General Skywalker without drawing a bunch of fire." Obi-Wan took a small holographic group of fighter jets over a small tower. "We can draw their fire and land the cruiser allowing the troops out. Admiral, do you have heavy missiles on this ship?"
"Yes but I do not see how that can help us, and this plan of yours will never work, they will see us the minute we land." Yularen said looking at the young Jedi like he had lost his mind.
"That's why I need someone on the guns, I want all you people onto smaller transports and.... I'll fly this ship right over them and blast them back to where ever they came from." Obi-Wan said moving a larger ship over where the Droids had been placed on Yularen map. "If we don't do something to draw their fire we will never get the men on the ground." Obi-Wan ran his hands through his hair again, "I know my plan sounds crazy, but I believe that it will work."
"You believe or you know?" Yularen asked looking down at the young boy. "And how are you supposed to fly the ship? What are you 12?"
"I am actually 13, and I have flown a ship large than this thank you." Obi-Wan said, "This is the only way we are going to be able to get those transport ships on the ground, if we don't My Master and General Skywalker will die far before the battle is over."
Admiral Yularen sighed and looked at the young Jedi, "I suppose you're right. If we are shot down while trying to land it will all be for nothing." Caption Cody walked over to Obi-Wan and saluted him, "I am at your service Commander." he said "General Jinn told us you would be coming and that we were to give you respect, my unit will stay aboard with you, and when we land we will help you get to your Master."
"Thank you.... Um... Cody was it?" Obi-Wan said aiming at the clone. He was truly glad that he was going to have someone with him when this whole thing went down. In all honesty he was unsure if he was going to be able to pull this whole thing off. "Alright, let's get ready for the jump to lightspeed, look lively men."
Obi-Wan finally walked back into the main hallway of the ship, hishe had spent his first few hours in the main control room of the ship making sure he knew most of the ship's controls and equipment before they went into the mission. The team Cody had volunteered had not piloted a ship before, but they were ready to learn. Obi-wan was very thankful for them, it would take a bunch of weight off his shoulders, but it also brought something else onto his mind, what if he failed to bring the ship down and he ended the lives of so many men? What is he failed and they died? That would be on his hands. Sighing Obi-Wan headed back down the hallways to his room, he dropped his bag off onto the sleep couch and then he headed to the mess hall. On his way there Obi-Wan looked around at the ship and at the things that were there. As a Republic War cruiser, the ship did not have many fancy luxurious on them, but they did have some nice places such as benches and the main bedrooms were quite nice as well. Obi-Wan finally made it to the mess hall and he looked around. The tall cream colored collins stood in the middle of the room, they were surrounded by tables full of food, off to his left there was a standard mess hall area. There was a large table near the far end of the room as well as having some normal mess tables. Obi-Wan headed for the mess table and reached for a tray.
"Padawan Kenobi." Caption Cody said walking towards him, "You know you're allowed to eat the good stuff?" he said pointing to the large buffet table behind him.
"I didn't know." Obi-Wan said smiling sheepishly. "I'm fine with this, I have no problem with it." Obi-Wan handed Cody a dining tray.
"Oh, I see Sir." Cody said smiling at his new commander. "When should I have my men ready?"
"Call me Obi-Wan," The Padawan said smiling putting some food onto his plate. "And I think we should have them ready at dawn."
"Roger that Commander Obi-Wan." Cody said walking towards a table filled with clones. Obi-Wan followed him and sat down with the small group of clones.
"Um... what's the commander doing here?" One of them said looking at Obi-Wan like he had two heads. His armor was blue, unlike Cody's whose was a dark orange.
"Am I not allowed to sit here?" Obi-Wan asked looking at the clone. "I didn't know we had a seating chart."
"Well, Commander Obi-Wan, most people of higher rank sit with the admiral." Cody said smiling at Obi-Wan.
"Well, if you would like me to leave, I can." Obi-Wan said starting to rise from his seat.
"No, sir, I meant no disrespect." the clone said standing, "We are just used to General Skywalker, he keeps a large gap between us and him, he's a Jedi."
"Well I'm a Jedi too," Obi-Wan said sitting back down. "But I know I don't look like much."
"Yes you do commander," the clone said, "They call me Fives. I should be down on the field with General skywalker, but I was hurt on our last mission and can not be down there."
Obi-Wan smiled and nodded at the clone, that was why his armor was different.
"Why did you choose to rejoin the battle now Fives?" the padawan asked curiously.
"Well it's a Clone's job to fight for the honor of the republic, so i thought that it was best if i joined the battle as soon as i could. Besides my team is down there and they need me."
"I see." the commander said smiling. He looked down at his food and took a few bites. "Why is Master Skywalker such a big deal?" he asked casually. Obi-Wan had grown up hearing about the adventures of Anakin skywalker but he had never had the pleasure of meeting the Jedi master in person before. All he knew was the master was well known for being reckless and taking missions no one else wanted to take and doing those things well. He knew that Skywalker was the former padawan of his current master Qui-Gon Jinn, but other than the small things his master had told him, he didn't know much.
"Well Sr. if I am to be honest with you, I don't get the whole thing either. He is just like any other general but comes with a higher steak." the clone said smiling. "I think someone told him once that he was the chosen one or something. But other than that, i don't know anymore than you do. Anyhow i will be staying on board with you to assist you in any way i can" Obi-Wan smiled and continued eating. It seemed that Cody had chosen a good group of people to stay with them onboard the ship. Obi-Wan just hopped that he could pull this daring mission off.
After finishing his meal Obi-Wan stated to head back to his room when a droid caught his attention. It seemed to be transmitting a message of some kind. Thinking quickly the young Jedi hid behind a pillar and used the force to enhance his hearing. He heard the droid beep and whistle indicating it had some kind of information for someone. Obi-Wan heard a cough on the other end of the line. He had never heard that voice before bt he knew it didn't belong to anyone that the droid should be contacting. "Did you get the information R7?" the voice said. "It had better be right or else you'll be nothing but scrap metal." Obi-Wan heard more beeps and whistles and he risked a quick look around the corner, to his surprise he saw a holo of his plans he had made today. That blasted droid! Obi-Wan said as he realized that the droid was a spy. He is giving away my plan. He won't have to worry about that guy anymore, I am going to turn him into scrap metal. "Good work R7, see to it that they never make it." Obi-Wan looked at the man standing in the hologram and to his dismay it was General Grievous himself.
"Oh, I would not say good job just yet General." Obi-Wan said walking out into the hallway. "Your little pet still needs to get off my ship." the young Jedi walked over to the droid and placed his hand on the top of the astromech droid and smiled at the General. "I don't think we have been properly introduced General, I am Commander Obi-Wan Kenobi, Master Qui-Gon Jinn's padawan." the young jedi looked at the general and smiled, he knew in this case he had the upper hand and if he used his wit and brains he would be able to find out exactly what the drid had sent him and he might even be able to find out how long this had been going on for.
"I see, a young padawan. You are the one with the bold plan to take us down." Grievous said coughing violently. "I will see to it that your ship never lands on this planet."
"I hope you can keep up your end of that General." Obi-Wan said grabbing the droid just as it was about to roll away, "I will have you know that I knew about your little friend for a while, so don't count on those plans General, you might find we have more in store than it seems."
"Well I hope for the sake of your master you are right." the General said and ended the communication.
"And for you," Obi-Wan said looking at the droid. "I will find a suitable job for you my friend." As Obi-Wan leaned over to power off the droid Cody came around the corner.
"Sr. I heard talking and didn't know what was going on." he said walking up tp the young Jedi. "What are you doing with one of the deck droinds Sr.?"
"Well, I found our little friend here sending our battle intel to General Grievous." Obi-Wan explained the whole encounter he had with the General to his caption. And he explained how their enemy now knew what they were planning to do. "How am i supposed to not let my guys down if we now know that our enemy knows our plan?" Obi-Wan clicked the droid off and sat on the ground. "I thought I was ready for this, but Master Qui-Gon was right, I am just not ready for war." Cody took a seat next to his commander and removed his helmet. The clone shared the same face as every other clone in the Grand Army of the republic, and he seemed like he was going to be just like everyone else. Placing his hand on the young Jedi's shoulder the clone smiled.
"You know when master Qui-Gon Jinn discovered the creation of the clone army, he found out that the Kaminoans were using growth Acceleration?" the clone looked at the boy and smiled again. "So, although I might not look like it but we are roughly the same age. I was activated 13 years ago, and started my training after birth."
"Does this happen to all clones?" Obi-Wan asked looking up at the clone sitting next to him. "Does this mean you will only live half a life?"
"Well Sir. i would say i have the same life as anyone else, I just only live for half the time as a normal human." cody said smiling. "But don't worry Commander, I am perfectly fine with it, I have never known any other life." Cody got up from his spot on the bench, some of the other clones followed his lead. Obi-Wan was the last to stand and follow his comrade to the washing station. Handing his tray to the woman standing on the other side of the counter Obi-Wan bowed to the clones and excused himself from the mess hall. On his way back to his room, the young Jedi could not get the image of General Grievous out of his mind, the part machine part man was much more terrifying than any of the Jedi had told him, he seemed more machine than man now, lost in the anger and hate for the Jedi order. The young padawan wondered how someone like that was able to live with himself, how could he go to sleep with so much anger and hate, knowing that he had hurt so many people. Obi-Wan pushed the thought down as he reached his room. Accessing the door the young Jedi walked in. This is where I am staying for the next few hours. The young Jedi thought to himself. I should contact Be back at the temple, tell her everything that happened. Obi-Wan walked over to the communicator and typed in Bant's info. Moments later a small hologram of his friend appeared and Obi-Wan smiled at the sight of his friend's face.
"Obi-Wan, how are you?" Band said smiling seeing her old friend. Obi-Wan and he had gone through Jedi training together and they had become close friends. The two had gone through thick and thin. After the attempt on Bant's life at the hands of the evil Xanatos, and the court case that followed after the death of former Jedi student Bruck. The two were as close than brother and sister. "Damn you don't look too good my friend." Bant said smiling.
"Well, to be honest I have been gone a few hours and so much has already happened." Obi-Wan said smiling. It was nice to see and talk to someone he knew. Cody was nice and reassuring, but having a friend was nice. "I was threatened by General Grievous, and I killed a droid." Obi-Wan tried to smile, but he found it hard to feel anything at the moment.
"Obi-Wan, stars and galaxies, I am so sorry." Band said gasping, "I had no idea that the war started as soon as you got on that ship. I wish you didn't have to go." Obi-Wan suddenly felt bad for making his friend worry about him. That's not what he wanted at all.
"No, Bant I am completely fine, I promise." the young padawan laughed, "I didn't see him in person, he had a droid aboard my ship and t was spying on us. Telling the good General our plans." Obi-Wan proceeded to tell his friend about the incident that had happened a few hours ago with the droid.
"Well do I dare ask what happened to the droid?" His friend asked jokingly.
"Let's just say he is now spare parts." Obi-Wan said smiling. "I had him sent to the dismembering center for intel, maybe the tin can can get us some info on how Grevou got him on our ship." the young Jedi seemed to be in his element with all of this, like he knew what he was doing.
"Well I am glad that it worked out alright." Baby said smiling, "I just hope that the info he passed on was not too important."
"It was from a certain point of view." Obi-Wan explained his plan and what the droid told the general. "So I plan to stick with it. That way they will not be expecting me to follow through with it and will be expecting the unexpected instead of me doing exactly what they know I ma going to do. Besides this General has never met me before, I still have the element of surprise."
"That is assuming the General is not expecting you to follow through." Bant pointed out, "Of course this General could be smarter than he looks. Obi-Wan a ot of people could die if this goes wrong."
"And my master will die if I fail this mission Bant." Obi-Wan said sitting on his sleep couch. "I am running out of options Bant. This is a war I am fighting, not just some training exercise."
"I know that Obi-Wan, but Clones are people too, they have a life signature and they are a lifeform." the youngling reminded her friend of that. "I know you want to help you master, but you need to remember that we are not fighting with droids, we are fighting with real people. That's why fighting for the Republic stinks like a Bantha."
"Ya, I know." Obi-Wan let out a deep sigh. "I wish my master was here, he would know what to do." the young Jedi stood up and walked back over to the communicator. "Thanks for talking with me Banta." he said smiling. It did mean a lot to him that his friend had come through and been there for him.
"Hey don't worry about it Kenobi, I know you'll do the right thing that needs to be done." His friend smiled and rose from her seat. "Well, it's late and I should get some rest. There is a master coming tomorrow to choose a padawan, maybe I will be selected."
"That's wonderful news Bant," Obi-Wan said smiling at his friend. "May the force be with you my friend."
"May the force be with you Obi-Wan Kenobi." Bant ended the communication leaving Obi-Wan to his own devices. The young Jedi sat there thinking about what his friend had said, knowing she was right. He need to remember that the clones were people too, he needed to make sure that they were safe if he did anything crazy. Walking back to his sleep couch Obi-Wan lay down and looked at the ceiling. He needs to do this just right, get all his troops on the ground, distract Grievous and aid his master, but how? Soon the young padawan drifted off the sleep and allowed the force to take hold of his body.
Dawn came and the lights on the cruiser came on. Obi-Wan rose and headed into the washroom. He showered quickly and put on a clean tunic, buckled his belt, clipped his lightsaber to it and made his way to the main hall of the ship. Most of the clones and pilots were sleeping to the bridge of the ship was mostly empty. "Commander on deck." someone yelled as the young padawan entered the room. "Good Morning Sr." a clone said walking towards him.
"Good Morning." Obi-Wan looked at the battle plans laid out for the day, it seemed like the most reasonable option. To follow through with his plan was risky, but it was a risk he had to take, he saw no other way to get the troops on the ground. Just as the young Jedi was about to say something Cody and a few other clones walking onto the bridge.
"Good Morning Sr." Cody said standing tall to solute his commander. "These are the men I chose to stay with us onboard."
"What happened to fives?" Obi-Wan said noticing the absence of the man in blue armor.
"He chose not to stay with us Sr." Cody said, "He didn't think your plan was worth dying for. He said he would take his chances on the ground." the clone didn't seem too happy with his comrades choice, but he also knew he could and would not force his friend to do something he did not believe was a good idea.
"That's alright Cody," Obi-Wan said "I'm sure he will be might happier with that." taking a pause Obi-Wan started to break his team on what was going to happen that day. The young Jedi smiled and looked at his friend, he knew that this was not going to be easy, but he was starting to have nie faith in his plan. "Here is the plan," Obi-Wan told the whole team what had happened the night after he came to the mess hall, and how the General would be expecting them to do doing than plan, but he also said that now the General knew that he knew, he was sure the General would expect him to come up with a different idea, so a few thing were changing, Obi-Wan had planned to land the star destroyer right in the middle of Theed and attract all the fire allowing the others to escape, while having the gunships and the rest of the troops meet them in the plaza, they were to take the gunships as soon as they reached the atmosphere and take the long way there.
"Are you sure this is the best idea Sr.?" Cody asked looking concerned, "Its a pretty risky plan and it could backfire badly on us."
"I know that, but I don't see any other way from us to draw the fire away from the gunships long enough for us to get them on the ground, and If we land the ship right in the middle, those tin cans will fire on us and not the gunships." Obi-Wan said moving his small hologram, "I will contact General Jinn and have him move his troops into position so they will be there as soon as we start the attack. That way we'll have some cover as we attempt to land."
"Well, it's a ballsy move, but it might just pay off Sr." One of the other clones said placing his helmet on. "I am Red Eye, what are your orders Commander?"
"Nice to meet you Red Eye." Obi-Wan said bowing in his traditional Jedi fashion. "I would have this small team help me land the ship while everyone else waits for us to create a diversion from the main attack."
"So you'll have us fly what ship Sr.?" Red Eye said looking at the young Jedi confused.
"This ship trooper." Obi-Wan said smiling walking over to the door. "I will see all of you on the bridge in five, yes?" with that the young Jedi walked from the room the double doors hissing closed behind him.
