With Bated Breath- Spock

This one is dedicated to my sweet friend Whovian3135!

The relocation of the remaining Vulcans to New Vulcan was one of the best decisions the Vulcan delegation had made in a while. But now that Elder Spock has passed, they are looking for another to take his place. You stood out on your homestead veranda, looking out at the changing leaves of spring's end. Your arms are folded and your brows pulled together as you contemplated your vote on the new delegate supervisor. You didn't hear the clicking of boots until they stopped right behind you. A smile pulled at your lips but you cleared your throat and straightened your face before you turned around.

"Forgive me, (Y/n), if I disturbed you."

"Not at all Sarek," you bowed your head slightly in respect, "I was merely thinking before the gathering. Have the others gathered?"

Sarek bowed back and opened his arm to the side, signaling for you to follow him. "Yes. This way please."

You came into step with the senior Vulcan, his delegation robes swooshing with each step. Your own dress danced around your feet as you did your best to keep up with is long strides with your smaller legs. You tugged nervously at your pale blue dress, adjusting the small precisely placed belt around your waist until you felt a warm hand fall on your shoulder.

"Be still child. You will perform adequately, I am sure." He stops and turns you gently to look at him, his fatherly hands on your shoulders. "I believe my son will have no rejection to your proposal. Our families will do well to be joined in marriage."

You blink slowly and made sure to keep your breathing as regular as possible. "Thank you sir, but I don't want to bind him to me if he does not wish it. The council comes before any wedding ceremonies. But I appreciate your efforts to console my emotions. Amanda taught you well." You smile and lay a hand on one of his still placed on your shoulder.

Sarek nods and continues on to the Delegation chamber. You hang back a bit as you did your best to regain your emotions and breathing. Since Amanda's death, Sarek had been on a hunting trip to find his son a suitable wife. So who else would be a perfect match than one of his childhood friends? Yes, well, you and Spock were friends to a degree, but he never liked that you would often tap into your human side which gained Amanda's admiration. Sarek did not pay much attention to you until you joined with Elder Spock in preserving the Vulcan culture. He has expressed to you time and time again what a perfect match Spock and you would make. As much as you wished Spock would agree to such an arrangement, you cannot help but doubt that it would truly come to pass.

You let out a sigh. No use fretting over something that cannot be predicted. With that, you smoothed out your dress one more time before you entered the Delegation Council to convince them why your choice of Sarek's son, Spock, as the new Delegation Supervisor, after Elder Spock, is the best decision.

"Captain, I do not believe it is necessary to visit my father's council. I have made my decision to not join them. With the Enterprise in repairs, I believe it best to treat this as a shore leave, not a political rendezvous."

The yellow and blue shirt got off their transport on New Vulcan and started their way to the Delegate Council's meeting house where Spock's father wished to meet him.

Kirk laughed and nudged his pointy-eared friend with his elbow. "Oh come on Spock! Isn't want's her face here?"

Spock just stared at his captain and friend before looking ahead again. "(Y/n). Her name is (Y/n). And I would appreciate it if you would refrain from making advances on her. She may be half human but her Vulcan side has been known to be quite ruthless." He subconsciously rubbed his left side of his ribs as if soothing a painful memory.

Kirk's eyebrows raised. "Ohhh. Spock has a crush."

"We have been too far apart for a long period of time for us to acquire a romantic relationship." Spock looks at Kirk out of the corner of his eye. "And I would ask that you do not press that topic father."

Kirk chuckled and raised his hands, "Alright, alright, I can take a hint. Would hate for her to notice that you liked her."

Spock opened his mouth to refute his friend's claim when a softer and more sweet voice beat him to it.

"I'm afraid I can attest to his previous statement, Captain." You strode toward them, a light smile on your face and your light blue dress flowing in the slight breeze. "Welcome to New Vulcan. I believe Sarek is expecting the both of you."

Spock stared after you as you turned to lead them to the Delegation building, his eyes taking in your beautiful frame. Your hair had gotten longer and you styled it in a way it was out of your face but elegant enough to attend meetings. Your eyes still shown with untapped mischief and your hands still messed with the closed object when you were nervous. He remembers back when that used to be his hands or the hem of his shirt when the two of you were in school or at council meetings with the elders.

Kirk smirked as he pushed his love-sick friend forward. "Not romantically interested eh?"

Sarek rushed out of one of the private office rooms and onto the veranda. You were sitting in a chair reading a surprisingly interesting report from the Enterprise when you jumped at the elder's sudden appearance. You stood and gently placed the book down to go to him.

"Are you alright Sarek?"

The elder councilman looked at you with fire in his eyes but it disappeared as fast as it took flame. "I am fine, but it seems that my son had decided to not stay on New Vulcan after all. I must inform the rest of the council. See what you can do to convince him otherwise." And with that, he rushed off in the other direction, his robes billowing behind him.

You looked back at the private room to see Spock standing in the doorway, no longer in Enterprise uniform but in civilian Vulcan clothing. You had to remind yourself to breathe as your mind went back to the time before he left, to the time when you thought you had your future planned out.

"I am sorry to have troubled you with this personal matter. I had no intention of getting you involved." Spock stepped forward so the both of you were now on the veranda.

He studied your hair, face, and clothes as if committing it to memory. Spock had always found you beautiful but you had grown over the years after he left for Starfleet and then again after the relocation. He would be lying if he said he wasn't excited to see you again when he was informed about the council's decision to have him take his future self's place on the Vulcan Delegation. He felt quite flattered that it was you and not his father that suggested his name to be put in for consideration.

Your brow creased with concern. "Do not trouble yourself with apologies Spock, we both know I am far involved in this than a mere father and son confrontation." You reached up and rested your hand on his upper arm. "But I would hope that you would at least give it some thought before you reject such an honorable position."

"I have given it ample amount of meditation and calculated thought, but I have come to the conclusion that I am needed on the Enterprise. That need is far greater than the need presented on New Vulcan."

You recoiled as if you were slapped.

"Is not being the head of the Delegation Council and Supervisor of New Vulcan a need that does not require and explanation? I fear you have confused your needs with your wants."

"You misunderstand. Where I know that New Vulcan is a primary concern to me and my Vulcan heritage, I find that being upon an expletory ship such as the Enterprise is proving to benefit more than one race at a time. As humans say it will "kill two birds with one stone."

It is becoming harder to restrain your emotions. Your fists started to ball and your body became rigid. What a selfish oaf! And to think that you had hoped that after years in Starfleet service and after the relocation of the Vulcans, Spock would come to learn what he has missed here at home.

"Then what of your father? What of the work that your Elder Spock had done? You know your father does not have the heart to stay in the council for very much longer. And you know that the work Elder Spock had done was in hopes that you will take his place!"

Spock's eyes widened and he stepped forward. "I do not think that a time traveling version of myself would break my own time-line in life all for long meetings, ritual monitoring and Vulcan delegations."

You stepped back again, wrapping your arms around your middle, turning to look out over the veranda. The wind started to pick up, a storm seemed to be on its way.

"Then tell me this, Spock, since New Vulcan and our culture disgusts you so, what of me?" You whisper out into the wind.

Spock cocked his head to the side and took a few tentative steps in your direction, looking beseechingly at your back. "Come again?"

You turned with a sigh, looking down and away from him, your hair whipping around you as the storm grew stronger.

"You heard me, you oaf."

"You know that I have feelings for you (Y/n), they just cannot be explored. I am stationed on a ship and you are here with my father."

"And this relationship would only be one-sided."

"Perhaps. I know my father wishes for it to be followed through, but I cannot but look at it as it is; a task to be completed. A means to an end."

Spock regretted the words as soon as they feel from his lips. Your head shot up and tears fell freely from your shining (e/c) eyes. He opened his mouth to try and redeem himself but you raised a shaking hand. You looked him right in the eyes as if daring him to move. Spock so desperately wanted to, to pull you into his arms and to smooth your pinched, sad, brows.

"Forgive me for hoping. I was willing to suggest an alternative to us being apart, but I understand now how mistaken I was to think a romantic relationship would be more than a mere task for you." Thunder clapped in the distance.

Without looking back, you ran. As far as your legs could take you. Tears fell freely and your lungs burned with suppressed sobs. Suddenly, you ran into a warm and strong body. Soft hands clasped your shoulders and steadied you.

"Hey, whoa. Why the tears?"

You looked up and was greeted by bright blue eyes.

"Spock..." But you couldn't say another word as a sob finally broke free.

Kirk rolled his eyes as he helped you sit. "What has that illogical bastard done this time?"

I am doing a part two! I am LOVING this idea and can't let a dumb word count get in the way ;)
